QPR’s squad overhaul following the arrival of new owner Tony Fernandes continued on transfer deadline day with the acquisition of Shaun Wright-Phillips from Manchester City. The winger joins up at Loftus Road on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The Statistics

Having suffered frustration at Chelsea, the return to Man City from Chelsea in 2009 failed to hand Wright-Phillips the opportunity for regular starts that he craved.

The early signs had been encouraging – 27 starts in his first season back brought returns of 5 goals and 5 assists with 16 Fantasy Premier League bonus points. Predictably, however, his starts were cut the following season as City begun bolstering their squad with their newfound millions under Roberto Mancini – the arrival of Adam Johnson, in particular, hindered his progress. Wright-Phillips started 19 matches in 2009/10 but still managed to chip in with 4 goals and 8 assists with 10 bonus thrown in.

Last season, Wright-Phillips found himself limited to Europa Cup and FA Cup appearances and failed to make an impression. There’s no doubt that he desperately needs a run of assured starts and an injury free spell if he is ever to return to the kind of form which brought double figure goal returns in his first spell with City in the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

The Prospects

Wright-Phillips looks a good fit for Rangers. Warnock favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation in the Championship last season and the former City winger would seem well suited to a role in that system on the right flank or in a similar position in a 4-4-2. Joey Barton’s role on the arrival of Wright-Phillips is interesting – presumably he could line up in central midfield rather than find himself deployed on the right. Shaun Derry and Alejandro Faulin are well established in the holding midfield roles but presumably, Barton could take up one of these central positions with Adel Taarabt surely set for the free role behind a lone striker.

Clearly both Barton and Wright-Phillips offer Warnock several options and tactical flexibility. The knock-on effects are that the likes of Tommy Smith and Akos Buzacky now look likely to find themselves restricted to cameo roles as the new broom sweeps through Loftus Road.

In Fantasy terms, Wright-Phillips, along with Barton, will certainly come back onto the radar but Adel Taarabt is surely likely to remain the key target within the Rangers midfield. The price difference between the three midfielders is minimal with Barton currently the cheapest in the pack – Wright-Phillips is available at 6.4 in the Fantasy Premier League game following a recent price drop. Taarabt, at 6.5, still looks the most likely given his set-piece involvement and impressive goal record. Having struck the woodwork twice at Wigan, the signs indicate that returns are imminent.

Taarabt’s influence on Rangers’ attacking play may well be reduced as a result of the new arrivals but arguably the potential for stronger results, form and confidence will only help Taarabt meet the pre-season expectations of those who invested in the Moroccan. Wright-Phillips has a point to prove but whether he can outshine and outperform Taarabt in the new QPR lineup is certainly up for debate.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I've played my Wildcard this GW, and this is what I've got so far:

    Given (Vorm)
Jose Enrique, Bosingwa, Baines, R Taylor (De Laet)
    Young, Nasri, Anderson (Dyer, Ferguson)
    Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko

0.1m left; what do you reckon guys? I know my subs are a bit lightweight, but I'm pleased with my starting XI...

      R. Taylor is probably gonna be dropped. I'd either draft Simpson in for him and play him every week or downgrade one of your more expensive defenders and upgrade Dyer/Ferguson with the money.

Then again, it may be worth keeping Taylor for a week just in case he does start with the price rise etc, then bring Simpson in if he doesn't. Not sure preparing a transfer for a 4.0 defender is a good idea though.

      Otherwise it looks fine.

Very nice team, but I think you need one more playable midfielder. I'd downgrade one of your defenders (probably Enrique if you're keen on keeping Baines) to do so.

Silva for me, one week where he doesn't score (but comes close) and Nasri has a few assists doesn't change the fact he's City's best midfielder. Mata still a relative unknown fantasy wise, Young is good but it depends on if you have Rooney really.

Thouights on Sturidge? he's in my team at the moment, along with Rooney and Dzeko. It allows me to have Mata, nasri/silva, walcott and Artea. I can downgrade artea to cheap and upgarde him to saurez.

    So in summary:

    Sturidge + Arteta/N'zog etc..

    Or suarez + cheep mid.

But what I really want to know if what are your thoughts on Sturidge?

I'm thinking it's gona be Torres with Mata one side and Sturidge the other?

First of all I hope you're right, I really rate The Sturridge and that'd be awesome. Drog is injured and not first choice anyway, I'd put him above Kalou, Malouda was apparently almost sold...you'd think he'd play.

However, in fantasy terms, you're banking on two men starting in a team whose lineup is pretty much up in the air, so it may be worth just going for one of them for now.

Then again, one of them almost certainly will so you could just take a chance and sort out the one who doesn't. And if you're right you're sorted.

Argh. The delay in price rises boned my plan to make some cash off of Dzeko in order to squeeze Adam in. Dzeko went up his .2 a day late, but then so did Adam who remains .1 out of reach.

Should I continue to try to massage a .1 out of my team to go for Adam or should I look elsewhere (Areta? Walcott?) now? Other midfield spots are Nasri, Jarvis, Brunt, and Dyer. Back line is the usual suspects and the front is Rooney, Suarez, and ideally Bent once Dzeko is gone.

    On my WC.

I'd be a bit of regular so I can see two sides of it. One side ye there can be some elitism from certain people here. On the other hand this year a lot of people have come on here posting RMT's 5 or 6 times a day and that's it. So it can be annoying too. In my opinion RMT's are pretty pointless because everybody might love your team but it could still be an absolute failure or vice versa.

I agree with you totally, but why try and put people off and make them feel silly or small for posting a RMT? Just ignore them if you don't want to comment.

The sie was bound to experience a large increase in the number of more casual players/posters after the publicity Mark etc have generated. Arteta vs Walcott… talk to me.

A tough one but currently have gone for Arteta, think he just edges it with the 1.0 price save.

If they were both the same price, then I’d probably go Walcott.

I think I agree with you on the final point, and I have 1mil that would just be sitting there otherwise so I'm probably going for Theo. I think he himself could really benefit from Arteta.

Depends what you'd do with the money really. In my case, nothing, hence the expensive option not being an issue.

Ugh, price rises are all over the place it seems, FISO is showing 0% at the minute for risers, whereas TotalFPL has been wrong almost all the time so far, I wonder how much FPL are fiddling around with the value structure in the early stages, or if, like everything else, they don't have a clue yet!

On the radar. Just get the feeling he needs someone else's personality. He WILL score, but subsequently might start thinking he is a superhero again, and you just won't get the returns that you could (still might be value though... depends how much a manager can scare him into working harder).

Depends on how he fits in at Chelsea. I am kind of hopeful that he and Mata are going to get Torres firing again. I think they both provide a better creative flair than most of the chelski squad and that's what Torres needs.

Torres..??? Nahhh he's lost it. His only chance is to let his hair grow long again 🙂 . He was scoring goals with creating chances and his pace in the past, not that much from sitters.

But Raul is 7.5 and I believe he'll play in the engine room together with Lamps and he shoots a lot. Lamps is comings a lot of times deep to take the ball and start the attack so I believe Raul's average position will be higher in the pitch. He is settled in the PL too, Mata will need time and there is more competition for those wing spots in the team, a lot of time he won't see 90 min IMO.

currently got anderson and petrov in my wc team with the (faint) hope that they'll doublerise and earn me some buckaroos. it's not looking promising at this point, however.

which means i'm starting to wonder where my budget options in midfield will fall, i'm not sold on barkley and brunt has been a pit of despair for me in past seasons. moses has been woeful (points-wise) for the past 3 weeks and whilst dyer has been fine for his price, i find myself wondering if swansea are actually going to stay competitive enough to a) get him bonuses/cleansheets and b) score enough goals for him to bring home a few assists.

So Tevez remains at City. Surely he's not gonna just be left to rot, so what do we reckon is gonna happen with him? Obviously it's difficult for Mankini to change his strike force at the moment but with the Champions League coming up, is he gonna see some action? Would be funny if he started against Wigan and tore them a new one with pretty no one with him in their team.

Leaves Rooney & Dzeko stand outs but throws questions over the third?

Bent is playing as good as he probably will all season so 10.0 looks a bit much.
Gyan is getting the shots away and it's only a matter of time before they start going in.
Suarez not very reassuring with only 2 shots per game.
Augero could explode very soon, and RVP def should start netting goals too.

I think this is a good bit of statistical analysis but getting shots on target and scoring goals isn't the same thing. Bent may well have less shots than Gyan but who would you bet to score more goals?

True, but if you are trying to predict a run of form, Gyan is the more likely to outscore Bent in the short term.

Only problem with Gyan is his general play has been absolutely terrible so far this season. In the last game it was almost embarrassing at times - running the ball out for a throw in, poor passing, terrible touches. I honestly think he's not far off getting dropped.
