Steven Gerrard edges closer to a first-team return. Capello inisists Wayne Rooney will be fine. Rafael Van der Vaart is set for six weeks on the sidelines while Mikel Arteta’s departure has Jack Rodwell eyeing up a regular starting position. Carlos Tevez is looking forward to his return to the Man City starting XI and QPR’s new owner Tony Fernandez is -allegedly- lining up a loan move for none other than David Beckham. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Jack Rodwell is looking to the positive side of Mikel Arteta’s Everton exit. The young midfielder struggled with injury last term but feels he is now 100% fit and is hoping to step up to the task of filling the gap left by the Spaniard’s last-minute deadline day departure:

Mikel is a great player…he will be sorely missed. But we’ve got a lot of young players who can fill in. I’m ready to step up and fill his boots, definitely.

What I’ve been missing in my career is 30 games back to back and getting a good run of form and confidence, so hopefully this season I can do that. I’m ready now. I feel fit, I feel sharp and focused. I believe this is the season for me.

Fabio Capello has moved to allay fears of an injury to Wayne Rooney. The Man United forward picked up the problem in England’s 3-0 win in Bulgaria and with Fantasy managers fretting over his availability, the Italian confirmed he expects his star man to be fit for the midweek game against Wales:

Rooney has a problem with his foot but I think he should be okay for Tuesday. It’s a different part of his foot. His big toe. It’s nothing, I think but we will have to wait for a minimum of 24 hours.

Steven Gerrard is nearing a return to first-team action. The Liverpool midfielder has been out since mid-March with a groin problem and has played just six times since Kenny Dalglish returned to the Anfield club, but reckons he could be ready for a mid-September showdown with Spurs in Gameweek 5:

‘I won’t be involved against Stoke next Saturday but my plan is to hopefully be involved in the game against Tottenham. It will be Kenny’s decision when I come back in.’

New QPR owner Tony Fernandes has wasted little time in bankrolling a number of signings since arriving at the club last month. Next up on his radar is none other than David Beckham. The LA Galaxy midfielder is out of contract in October and is allegedly considering a return to the Premier League- Fernandes is looking to boost the club’s profile and in that respect, Beckham would clearly fit the bill.

According to reports, Carlos Tevez is now content with his stay at Man City. The Argentine has been itching to leave the Etihad Stadium and has made no secret of his dislike of the area but seems to have been won round and is looking forward to turning out for Roberto Mancini’s side in the imminent future:

I think I’ll be playing again soon. I don’t think I’ll have lost my place because I’m captain and the symbol of a big club like City. I feel like everything is different to last year. Now I’m with my wife and daughters in England.’

Shane Long has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s game against Russia on Tuesday with a calf problem. The West Brom forward has bagged two goals in his first three games and Roy Hodgson will be sweating over his fitness ahead of next weekend’s trip to Norwich, with Peter Odemwingie also sidelined with an ankle injury.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s hamstring problems continue to play up. The Dutchman limped off in Tottenham’s recent 5-1 home hammering by Man City and, according to the club’s official website, looks to be sidelined for six weeks. This could promote Emmanuel Adayor to penalties, boosting the Fantasy merits of the loan signing as Harry Redknapp’s side look to bounce back from two straight defeats.

Bad idea imo. Don't forget that alot of the time there is a good reason lots of people have picked these players.

By avoiding them for the sake of avoiding them you will only push yourself further behind.

Especially at this point, if you want to take some gambles do it with your captain choice, low budget players etc.

Rooney + Dzeko/Suarez would be a much better shout than Tevez/Hernandez imo, even if lots of people have gone with the same.

Nice midfield, but in no way can you justify spending that budget on Hernandez and Tevez.

Get in RvP if you want something different up front, and possibly Ruiz (if the hype on these forums is anything to go by)

Had a not bad start so far.... this is current team

    given (vorm)

simpson, enrique, baines, (alex , brown)
    moses, jarvis, silva, young (dyer)
    long, dezcko, bent

    but thinking of wildcarding.

    new team would be.

    given (vorm)
    enrique, smalling, brown, boswinga (simpson)
    young, adam, silva (dyer, ferguson)
    rooney, aguero, doyle

    Whaddyathink?

Thinking adam is safer bet for points over suarez (seems to involved in EVERYTHING). And not many people going for him (compared to young silva) it seems.

Or should i keep it (WC) for further down line?

Why did I look at Baines' stats...?
A total of 2 successful crosses, and 2 shots (none on target, although one hit the ww). Granted he only played 180mins, but he is far far from the top defenders when it comes to influence or goal threatening.
At 8m, I am not sure I have the patience to wait for his two 'easy' games

always good to have top players rotate as well as bottom. That way you dont have all your top dogs at home one week and away the next

Surely the point of selecting "top players" is that they can perform every week against virtually any club. So why rotate them at all?

If you start thinking like that, you'll miss a stack of points from some players.

Its about home/away rotation. Not if your going to start them or not. Of course your going to start them. Your players will always score more at home.

You don't ever drop them, the only rotation as the fact that if you have a Liverpool and Everton defender then their home fixtures rotate with each other.

Not sure it makes much difference - if you're talking about 6 (say) players you always play, then having 3 at home and 3 away for two weeks is no different from having 6 at home one week and then 6 away the next. You still get a total of 6 home games and 6 away games out of them over a two week period. (Psychologically I confess it may be tough the week they are all away...)

I wouldn't want two Everton defenders in my team though and what about the weeks when Everton don't play but Liverpool do? And yes, I wouldn't be looking forward to any weeks where most of my team is playing away.

I have Baines. Thinking of keeping him for next 2 games as he's at home and has fairly favourable opposition.

However, after that I expect he'll be gone from my team so if you have more pressing needs then I'd agree get rid of him now.

Arshavin has been guff for a while.

Basically I think RVP could have a bigger influence on the game if he was allowed to drop deep. One of Arsenal's biggest problems recently seems to be committing people forward, if you had someone always up there it would allow RVP to drop deep and influence play while you've got two fast wingers bombing up too.

Arsenal's whole system has been built around Fabs for a while now - it;s not worked out too well for them. Would love to see them try something different.

I think the system would work when Fabs was in form and happy which is why it wasn't working. I think Arteta will step up. If not then I'd agree and say they should drop RVP deeper. I guess we also have to wait and see how Gervinho influences the game, we haven't really gotten to see all he can do. It's going to be very interesting to see what will happen!

Nah I would like to see this, but I dont expect it.

      Szecney

      Sagna Vermaelen Mertsacker Santos

      Song Wilshere

      Walcott Arteta Gerviniho

      RVP

With Wilshere actively dropping to allow arteta to get up, but it will be 4-1-2-2-1

Yeah, I don't expect it either - i'd just like to see it.
As above, was only talking for the next game - when Gerv is available again I'd put him in the above lineup for either Park or Arsh.

I think what you've said above is the most likely starting lineup when everyone is available.

suuuuuuuurely Walcott is a safer bet than arteta, walcott is more attacking and should be guarenteed to start, arteta could well come off the bench in his first game.

I can't see Arteta only being on the bench. he isn't involved in the international break, and Wenger will want to play him in what should be a gentle introduction at home to Swansea.

Was just thinking about holding off for two weeks. Ashley Young plays Man City in Gameweek 5. Everton have two decent little fixtures. I was thinking about keeping faith in Cahill until then.

Well I dont think Young is at risk of rising again. Cahill was an injury scare in his Australia match so if he's not going to play then I'd say go for it. If he will play I'm not sure but then again I have a thing against points hits 😛

    Krul (Vorm)

Kompany - Bosingwa - Hutton (Simpson, Taylor)

Silva - Mata - Bale - Jarvis (Dyer)

    Rooney - RVP - Holt

And if I'm feeling ridiculous come Saturday morning then Tevez, Arteta and Sturridge in for RVP, Mata and Holt.

I think Lampard could be very dangerous, on a mission after being dropped for England, but just doesn't warrant his price tag this year.

It's coming down to a choice between Chelsea and Liverpool attackers, basically Mata v Suarez, and I trust Chelsea more. A lot of unknowns with Liverpool with Carroll almost certain to play a part against Stoke, Gerrard coming back against Spurs and so on.

Depends if you have to play them.

Shawcross / Ward look nailed on and will do ok if not outstanding. I'd be tempted to look at Woodgate if you go that route.

Who knows what Toon will do now they have Santon. You have to think he'll go before Taylor based on form / contribution, then again Santon might not walk into the team at the moment.

    Hi guys,

I have 2 options for my midfield

    1) Silva, Walcott, Dempsey/Bale,

    2) Silva, Mata, Arteta

Any thoughts? Ive tried to squeeze Silva, Mata and Walcott in but I would have to demote 1 other midfielder to Ferguson for 4.0

    Cheers

Could just roll with Ferguson. I don't get all the "you have to upgrade him!!!!" on these boards. Surely you're not going to need 3 autosubs every week (hell, if you do, you need to look at your whole team not just one midfielder).

Silva, Mata, Walcott et al are players you'll play every week. So does it matter if one of your squad is essentially redundant?

-1 What about injuries? I learnt from last season that you need all 15 players playing otherwise you have to take hits.

You'd be surprised at when you need your third sub. Everyone's got a Man C striker (presumably) and no matter who you got, he's not going to play every week. You just need one injury elsewhere and the third sub is ready to come on - or not, in Ferguson's case.

          *two injuries.

I do get the point but if you've got 2 injuries / suspensions, then one of those is your free transfer that week.

No, I did mean one injury and then if anything else happens then it's Ferguson who 'comes on'. So if Rooney misses a single game with a knock then you're gonna free transfer him out and then back in a game when he's fit? I don't think so.

The other thing about Ferguson is that you can't easily trade him for someone else. You have to downgrade another player to swap him. It's just not worth it, you're creating trouble in the future and with 35 gameweeks to come you'd have to be incredibly lucky to never need a third sub.

2 by a long way for me. Silva we all know about, Mata & Arteta are ??? (less so Arteta) but I think they will both shine. I love walcott but can't afford him & dempsey/bale... meh.

Anyone else think that owning a Manchester City striker is going to become a tad frustrating in the near future? With the Champions League starting, Mancini is obviously going to have to utilise all four of his hit men at various times. It’ll be horses for courses no doubt resulting in diminished pitch time for all. Even a four goal shift will be no guarantee of a start the following week.

Roughly 50% of teams have selected one or more of the four gents in question. Perhaps they should start giving some special attention to their vice captaincy?

Only Dzeko is worth it for this exact reason IMO, but he could still pay off hugely. With that said, my only City attacker is Silva, who I think should play most weeks.

Interestingly, it could also make the likes of Milner/Johnson actually viable options if they start getting regular league football.

It's a conundrum. I can see Aguero & Tev rotating nicely and also Dzeko & Telly... but Dzeko is the man o' moment and don't see him dropped until he fires blanks. Yes, I am talking myself into keeping Dzeko rather than cashing in.

I think Balotelli will be a bit part player from now on, but yes the other three will have to divvy it up.
