Fantasy managers will be reeling from this morning’s news that Leighton Baines has withdrawn from the England squad with a hamstring injury picked up in training.

The FA have released a statement on the matter, saying only:

“Leighton Baines has returned to Everton, having sustained an injury in training on Sunday. Baines has been ruled out of England’s Euro 2012 qualifier with Wales on Tuesday evening, and is now with his club for further treatment. No replacement has been called into the squad.”

Last season’s top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender must be considered a major doubt for Everton’s weekend fixture at home to Aston Villa, then. With another Goodison showdown the following week against Wigan, his 236K Fantasy owners would have been anticipating some decent returns, particularly with the left-back on set-pieces and penalties in light of Mikel Arteta’s departure to Arsenal.

It’s a tricky one- Baines’ price (8.0) takes up a large chunk of our early-season budgets and there’s certainly no point in having him benched if he proves to be unavailable for those upcoming fixtures. Until the club assess the player and make any official statement, though, it’s a case of “wait and see” right now for his Fantasy owners- the potential is clearly there for Baines is Gameweeks 4 and 5 and to bail out now before any confirmation by David Moyes would be folly.

Here’s a little though experiment that we could attempt; if you had played the wildcard after gameweek 3 in previous seasons, and gone for the form players as many on here are currently doing, how would it have worked for you?

I only played properly last year, so that’s the only year I can think back to.

If you did it last year you would have got Drogba, Malouda and Cole for sure, which wouldn’t haven seen much points profit, because they were soon to go on a barren run (I think you would have got one more good game from them, against Blackpool at home, before this started.)

You would have bought Carroll, which would have worked out lovely.

You would maybe have Albrighton, which would have worked out ok and then bad.

You would have Elmohamady, which would have been ok for a bit and then bad.

You would maybe have Phil Jones, which would have been pretty average.

You wouldn’t have any of Baines, Huth, Adam, Nani, Cahill, Dempsey Berbatov or Tevez who all began their points charges more or less after the third gameweek. This would be a bad thing.

And you would haven’t had to hold onto the lame Scout bandwagons from the start of the season that hadn’t yet delivered, such as Boselli, Craddock, Shawcross, Arteta etc. Getting rid of these would have worked for you.

A mixed bag then, and one which I expect to be repeated this time round probably. Though this may be the case whenever you wildcard.

Interesting comments and I would agree that it is better to wait... although when 3 GWs have gone by and your behind in private leagues sometimes the wildcard hand is forced by a few lucky gits who got lucky captaining aguero in week one or ashley young in 3

Err, I played my Wildcard at and around GW3/4 last year, specifically to get in Adam, Carroll, VdV and Nani.

But mostly I did it to get rid of Boselli, Evans, Petrov.

Also it ended with me being in the top 150 by the end of the season, so I think it was well played 🙂

It must have been gameweek 4. Adam got his 13 points against Newcastle in gameweek 4, having done little in terms of points the previous 3 weeks. VDV made his premier league debut in 4, and had therefore got nothing previously. And I think that Nani's first big week was gameweek 4 too (happy to be corrected there).

If anything the case of your success (well done!) backs up my argument; look at the valuable data you were able to gather and implement by waiting that little bit longer!

It all depends on how/why you WC.

I wildcard this GW, because my team had Young (Luke), Hilario, Zamora, Senderos, Nani and N'Zogbia - so it was more to get out than to get in.

In the process I got some nice value upticks in Dzeko, Bosingwa, Jarvis and Young.

I honestly believe that based on my team, this was the best call for me. The problem is that my team is going to be very generic going forward. Would love to take a punt on Bale/Adebayor but can't see past Rooney/Dzeko/Suarez up front, and can't afford Bale in my midfield unless I get rid of Young or Nasri

The 'when to WC?' post ...

meh ... it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't (the early WC). Also depends on what you're playing for ... overall rank, mini-league, or just plain fun.

As MMW put it yesterday, wildcard is as wildcard does. Simples. 🙂

No proper answers, it'll work this week for some and won't for others. That's not because of the week they played it, just the way it is.

Good to have something a bit different as a discussion point on here, though it'll get sucked away by everything else in about 3 minutes...

To be fair to Jonah, and not try to kill his thread, I personally play for my mini, fun, and rank - in that order.

I have been very successful in my mini, winning 3 years out of 6. I think that my early (weeks 3-5) WC enabled me to build up enough of a lead over my rivals that I could freely spend transfer points later on without losing my lead and enabling me to stay on the form players.

Plus, it's *fun* making transfers, managing the team. That's what I play for, too - otherwise, it's just a dreary enterprise.

Yeah, this WC week has been more fun (in terms of checking who's about to rise, who of mine has risen etc) than I expect the rest of the season to be.

Berbatov started the season well, think he got 7 and 9 pts in his first two games, I got him in my team when he scored a hattrick early on - got rid of him the week before he scored 5 goals against Blackburn though. 😛

Looks like im happy after using my wild card
    Given, Vorm
Shawcross, Bosingwa, Kompany, Hughes, De Laet
    Silva, Young, Henderson, Morris, Dyer
    Holt, Rooney, RVP

What do you all think. i know Henderson could be a bit of a risk and im trying hard to stay away from Aguero & Suarez thats why i have gone for RVP. And I think Arsenal will do better with Arteta feeding RVP

No United cover? With Rooney and Young playing the way they are you are asking to fall further behind quickly without one of them.

Also Meireles - keep clear, run and don't stop running. He is Benayoun MkII and even if I'm wrong on this he'll be the 5th most forward Chelsea player behind their front 3 and Lampard.

I think you're spending too much. Your bench is costing you 9.0, Simpson/de Laet are good starters that can step in when your 'big 3' don't play.

Alternatively I'd get Brown for Kompany, as I think that City may not get as many CS this year and he rotates with STaylor.

I hope nobody went out and traded Baines and Bent in last week? Like I said in previous posts, trading 10 days before the start of the round is asking for trouble when there are 2 hard international fixtures in between. Lots of time for injuries!! I dunno why people can't wait until the teams are announced, they seem to think that 0.1 price rise will ruin their whole season. Just be patient peeps.

well, sort of, prices will go up in the long term, but over the course of one week, it's unlikely they'll go up more than 0.1 or 0.2, compare that to bringing in a player and using a trade, then having to trade them back out again once they get injured and coping a -4 or -8 hit, it's just not worth it.

          40 goals X 5 = 200

He plays as a Forward for Portugal, but Rmid (in theory if not practice) for Utd and was classed as a middie in FPL.

He'd also have earned his share of clean sheet points to add to that total, as well, since he was a middie in FPL.

Yes, but I think Messi's price would keep going up year on year as he kept performing. Ronaldo only returned one year like that in the EPL.

On a wildcard at the moment. Team is looking as follows
    Given vorm
    Bosingwa enrique shawcross brown simpson
    Nasri young tarrabt brunt dyer
    Suarez rooney dzeko

My question is, should I swap nasri and brunt for walcott and zoggers? liking the look of both arsenal and villas games. I already have some city coverage with dzeko

On this WC team at the moment:

    Given, Vorm
    Kompany, Bosingwa, Woodgate, Simpson, NTaylor
    Young, Nasri, Jarvis, Petrov, Barkley
    Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko

Worried my midfield may not be strong enough. Should I try and get in Mata and/or Arteta?

I could do this by, for example:
    A) downgrading Dzeko (rotation risk with Tevez and CL, already got the price rise out of him, and have Nasri for MC cover).
    B) downgrading Young (have already got Rooney for MU cover).

Looks like Nani will drop in price in the next day or so. Also, with Valencia scheduled to return in the next week, or so, this could cut into Nani's playing time like it did last season.

Other than Young, who would you recommend as an alternative to Nani?

Are you specifically looking at United? Then Anderson at a stretch.

In general its the usual suspects Nasri, Silva, Mata, Walcott, Arteta etc

Any suggestions for my team? Used the wildcard as basically all my players were under performing or not included in the GW3 fixtures - Senderos for instance.

I'm listing players on the "first team" with the imagination that all of them were facing the same team in the same gameweek,

    Anyway here goes:
    Mignolet (Vorm)
    Santos Woodgate Brown (Berra Simpson)
    Downing Nzogbia Mata Adam (Ferguson)
    Adebayor Rooney Dzeko

Have £0.4m in the bank so at the moment I'm planning to swap santos out for a >4.6 defender and upgrade Nzogbia to VDV as soon as he's fit - supposedly 6 weeks.

Of course I want points but in the early GWs I'm looking to make more money out of my team so I can afford better players later on when everyone's suffering from the fpl economy lol.

Adam has a hip injury, so keep an eye on that. Ferguson is a waste of space, even if you only got him because he's the only 4.0 mid, since he'll never see the field.

Originally I had Parker instead of him, who ofc is so much better, but with the expensive players I want to have I don't mind having a non existent player like Ferguson lol. I can always switch my formation around since apart from him every other player imo can hold their own and has a potential to provide good points. 5-3-2 4-3-3 4-4-2

Hey guys, new to this thing so hear me out, Iv wildcarded and come up with this:

    Given (Vorm)
    Bosingwa Kompany Enrique DeLaet (Simpson)
    Walcott Brunt Silva (Petrov) Ferguson)
    VanPersie(C)Dzeko Rooney

not fully happy but cant think on what or who to change,
possibly get rid of one of the expensive strikers to upgrade midfield?

    Right choice for captain?

Downgrade Walcott for Downing, Bosingwa for Hutton and Silva for Adam and maybe Petrov to Parker. You'll have a lot of free money with no large loss in points hopefully, but no clue where to spend it all. Could upgrade Ferguson to have 5 solid midfielders.

I think it's a fairly solid team, and fairly similar to mind, but if it were me I would downgrade Walcott to Arteta, upgrade simpson/delaet to Woodgate and ferguson to dyer. I think between the three of them, they would get more points and would give you more coverage than simply relying on walcott.

    All,

    Help needed!

    Current team:

    Hilario (Ruddy)
Bosingwa, Richards, Simpson, De Laet (Brown)
    Silva, Cahill, N'Zog, (Moses, Ferguson)
    Rooney Suarez Torres.

2 free changes for this week.

i'm thinking Torres and N'Zog out for Dzeko and Walcott.

Good idea or shall I keep N'Zog for Villa fixtures and change Richards who may not play?

Worried by no Arsenal attacking cover if I don't have Walcott.

    Cheers!!!

Thought on Ferguson? I've seen a lot of people saying get rid of him, but is he really that bad an option is you have 4 reasonably solid mids alongside him (nasri, arteta, mata, petrov)? Only have one 4.0 defender and one 4.5 defender, so generally will have a decent starting 11 even with one squad place less. And it frees up money in the budget which is needed, given prices in the game this year.

Later on in the season, when you have a couple of players injured another one suspended, etc., and you need that third sub to bring you points, Fergusson will be worth less than a cone (ie, + 0). He'll be an automatic goose egg.

Wouldn't your third sub bring you a maximum of 2 points anyway? It's possible to get more than that 2 points every 3-4 weeks when you need your third sub to play by investing that money elsewhere. Not fully convinced, but on the WC so the team could easily change again 🙂

Depends. Are you playing 3 or 4 defenders?

If 3, then Downgrade either Brown (4.5) or Taylor (4.5), maybe to Simpson (4)
and upgrade Tiote (4.5) to Moses (5.0)?
