Our Watchlist rankings – found in the lower section of your homepage sidebar – have now been updated, bringing you our thoughts on mid-term player picks for the Gameweeks ahead.

The brief headline is – take a look at Arsenal. Despite the confidence-draining drubbing at Old Trafford, it’s hard to ignore the fact that the Gunners now have a run of opponents that should present a sturdy leg-up for their top four ambitions.

Arsene Wenger’s defence, whilst ravaged by injury against United, is now reconstructed and revived by much needed new blood; we can only speculate just how the new faces will settle but there’s no denying the fact that, if Arsenal can maintain their possession game over the coming weeks, we should see clean sheet returns – even with Thomas Vermaelen out of the frame.

Going forward meanwhile, Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun have been presented with the fixture equivalent of a playground on which to display their repertoire of flicks and neat one-two’s. Gain a confidence boosting win against the Swans this weekend and we’re projecting a strong goal return for Robin Van Persie and his attacking comrades.

In short, Arsenal coverage looks wise over the next six Gameweeks, but here’s a breakdown of the current Watchlist in full assessing those other player picks currently in our thinking…

Wojciech Szczeny’s selection at the top of our keeper rankings reflects the fixture list and his shot-stopping talents, which should bring significant returns over the next few weeks. West Brom’s Ben Foster maintains a high placing with the Baggies continuing a run of favourable opponents, despite a run of three away games in four – save points will again be key for Foster over this spell.

It’s a similar story with Newcastle’s Tim Krul, who will play behind a defence that has conceded just a single goal in their first three matches – a trio of away games in the next four will test the Magpies’ defensive credentials further. Wolves’ Wayne Hennessey is perhaps the dark horse pick here – he has three clashes at Molineux to come in the next four Gameweeks and, like Krul, is playing behind a much-improved defensive unit.

Jose Bosingwa’s superb start to the season has him ranked as our number one defensive acquisition. He’s got two tough Gameweeks to come but a schedule that picks up rather well after that, presenting further opportunity for the raiding full-back to boost his returns. Vincent Kompany remains the most secure and solid component of the Man City defence and with three home games in the next five, he should return on any investment while others rotate around him.

Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen was our choice from Wenger’s back four but today’s news has thrown that theory in the bin and left us with an uncertain mix of options. Per Mertesacker gets the nod – although his rank reflects some uncertainty on how he will settle amongst his new team-mates. Bacary Sagna is more expensive but might just be a safer option to explore.

Newcastle’s Steven Taylor heads up a list of strong mid-price options with Wolves’ Roger Johnson, Villa’s James Collins (with Alan Hutton close as an alternative) and Fulham’s Jon Arne Riise (if fit), all presenting good potential in the coming Gameweeks.

Leighton Baines, previously installed as our top ranked Watchlist defender, suffers a drop while his hamstring injury is assessed. He could be restored in our top five once fit but has a spell of evil fixtures to come from Gameweek 6 onwards. Right now, he’s relegated in our defensive thinking.

Arsenal’s Theo Walcott is the big climber in our midfield rankings, threatening to push David Silva off the top position with his strong start to the season and an array of fixtures which should see the Emirates flyer continue on the goal trail. A slight hamstring injury is a concern but we’d expect Walcott to shrug this off and feature against Swansea this weekend.

United’s Ashley Young holds firm in our top five, joined by the potential of Chelsea’s Juan Mata and Fulham’s Clint Dempsey – both strong attacking talents with the fixtures to help them emerge as early season prospects. We’re taking a punt on Mata, but have already seen enough to suggest that, come the home matches with Swansea and Everton, the Spaniard will emerge as a genuine alternative to the inconsistent Fantasy options presented by Frank Lampard and Florent Malouda.

Samir Nasri and Mikel Arteta offer options for those unable to find the cash for the Silva/Walcott combination. Behind them we have Wolves’ Matt Jarvis who heads up a host of midfield talent in Mick McCarthy’s squad – all of which should prosper in the coming weeks. QPR’s Adel Taarabt and West Brom’s Chris Brunt have yet to announce themselves in Fantasy terms this season – both have the talent and fixtures to put that right.

Up front it’s impossible to ignore Wayne Rooney’s form, despite a tough run of opponents to come. Edin Dzeko has an easier path over the coming Gameweeks and similarly devastating form – like Rooney, it’s hard to build a case against him – only the threat of rotation could dent his prospects but, right now, that seems unlikely.

Robin Van Persie is undoubtedly an unlikely differential – while a large number of Fantasy managers give up on the Dutchman, his forthcoming fixtures deliver a platform that will surely bring him increased goal and assist returns. That’s enough to see him rank above the mercurial talent of Luis Suarez who has to contend with some difficult fixtures – including three away trips in the next four Gameweeks.

Steven Fletcher and Grant Holt both present strong options over the weeks to come within the low-to-mid price bracket. Both have already got off the mark this season and, with attractive home fixtures ahead of them, should repay the Fantasy faith. Shane Long’s calf injury keeps him simmering rather than threatening the top four, while Fulham’s Bryan Ruiz makes an appearance – like Mata, he’s a player we’re backing to make a significant impact on our Fantasy seasons. Right now, he looks a gamble and a differential – that may well change in the weeks to come.

We will break this down further with a series of single player reports over the week – look out for those in the next couple of days.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Found a way to get in arguably the best player of each of the top 5 but not sure I'm happy about going with two 5.5 mids:

    Krul (Vorm)

Bosingwa - Enrique - Hutton (Simpson, N. Taylor)

Silva - Mata - Petrov - Hoolahan (Dyer)

    Rooney - RVP - Suarez

    Worth it?

My main consideration now has come down to this, or getting Dzeko over Suarez and dropping Silva down to bump up the other mids (something like Bale, Jarvis, Etherington) which should be more reliable. Then there's the option of Walcott over RVP but I think RVP will justify the 3mil extra.

I'd definitely take RvP over Walcott.

I'd downgrade Mata rather than Silva. I'd like the look of Bale/Jarvis/Brunt to join Silva/Dyer.

Aye that's pretty much what I'm thinking. The Silva vs. Mata question could be a big one, as I already have Dzeko for City but could easily take a couple of weeks just to see how Mata slots in. Then it'd be Bale/Jarvis and someone in the region of Brunt if not the man himself (he frustrated me a lot last year).

    dyer-silva ,0.1m
    dyer-walcott-0.8m
    brunt-arteta- 0.3m

basic is i have 14.3m and i have wolves, man city, arsenal and man utd cover in my squad that i am happy with like many want mata gk6 onwards so i may go for option a or b and then its a straight swap for mate if i go more balanced i may find it hard to get mata in

                right.

for chelsea he is a legend. You can not deny this (actually you probably can but no sane person can)

you obviously havent seen him play much for chelsea, he is not a hoofer.

He actually can play with both feet, his passing is good and he attacks the ball brilliantly in both boxes.

I get that you dont like him as a man. I dont care a. what you think and b. what he is like off the pitch. I am not a 10 year old kid.

So you dont care what he is like nor what i think yet replied to me regarding this very point.

Yes i have seen him play for Chelsea. I never mentioned him playing for Chelsea. I mentioned him specifically playing for England especially during the last world cup especially in a game v USA where he spent 90min hoofing the ball long to Heskey.

I remember it as it was a running joke in a pub i watched it in full of English supporters who noted the exact same thing.

Again everything you mentioned as nothing to do with the point i raised.

Subjectivity of football fans calling men who get paid millions legends for merely doing what they are paid for is one of the many things putting me off football. This and the cliched old school manner where off the pitch anything goes is even worse.

He isnt a "legend" (are you sure your not 10? and as a grown member of society you should care and judge people on their actions.

Aguerro is a rotation risk considering Tevez is staying and Dzeko is on good form. Mancini is bound to give Balotelli playing time eventually.

it was certainly why they were so keen on him. Although I think they would have still signed him even if Tevez had declared his love for Manchester. Dzeko hadn't hit his form yet and Balotelli was arguing with Mancini on the field.

On my wildcard and having a hard time.

Intend on having coverage from VP, Rooney and Nasri - so which additional combo would make the most sense:

    A) Dzeko and Young
    B) Suarez and Walcott

    Thoughts?

            Parker was fantastic last time.

Really dont think smalling should be playing RB, have we got no actual RB? He is a good defender, but quite clearly a central defender.

I still think Rooney should drop to where Young is playing and put someone else on the point.

We either wont make it out of a playoff, get into a playoff postion or even in random luck of getting to Euro2012 play anything other than to prevent embarrasment.

Russia are an average side with poor form and we were completely over run.

Part of me doesnt want us to go to Euro 2012 now and instead start a fresh.

You said we competed with the World cup finalists.

My point was at the time even then when we were much better they were well past their best.

Now we are even worse than we were when taking on 2 over the hill teams.

My point on Holland , spain germany was to illustrate the above .ie The italy and france teams of then were miles behind what a world cup contendor is not true.

We were miles behind that level then and now where even further away. But neither of these points was not related to competing at the finals. Which we are not good enough to do on current evidence

We can still go and compete though 🙄

Not with the best of the best, but the second tier.

Holding back and rebuilding isn't going to do anything considering we don't have players good enough to replace Dunne and Given to a lesser extent.

By compete you mean play away at a 3rd tier team with 10 behind the ball, no shots on goal and be lucky not to lose by 4?

                    Its not about replacing Dunne.

Its about changing tactics. Removing 2 central mids. Removing keane. Changing to a modern 4 3 3 and trying to pass the ball and work it to wide areas and create chances.

This 4 4 2 defensive stuff isnt working.

We don't have the players to play 4-3-3. The only centre mid in the squad capable of creating from midfield isn't even Irish.

It is how ideally we should play but we're simply not good enough to.

    Krul

    Ward Bosingwa Kompany Simpson

    Young Silva Jarvis

    Dzeko Rooney Suarez

Subs: Vorm, De Laet, Brunt, Dyer

    Have 0.4 in the bank.

I really want to gamble with RVP there, but I need to free up 11.5 and I'm unsure who I should transfer out. Played my WC this week too, so lots of flexibility.
