There’s another close-fought tussle atop the Captain Poll this week. Robin Van Persie’s quartet of goals over the break, albeit against the “might” of San Marino, has thrust him forward as the leading candidate. The Fantasy manager’s confidence is no doubt reinforced by the fact that Swansea arrive at the Emirates on Saturday having already suffered a battering on the road via a vibrant Man City performance, although Arsenal will go into the game licking deep Old Trafford wounds; it could get interesting if the Swans can keep them at bay early on.

Van Persie’s substantial attacking threat, bolstered by his set-piece involvement, has him out in front with City’s Edin Dzeko on his tail following his own four-goal salvo at Spurs in Gameweek three. The Bosnian will surely retain a starting role this weekend, despite the looming threat of Champions League rotation in the City camp. Roberto Mancini’s side have Wigan in the sights, a side who, believe it or not, have kept things reasonably tight to this point. Can the Latics stem the City tide, conducted by the brilliance of David Silva and a mummified Samir Nasri? It seems unlikely.

Wayne Rooney’s presence in the top rankings also comes as little surprise. Irresistible form, prolonged with a brace in Bulgaria, has him well placed to inflict more damage at the Reebok this weekend as United pitch their rampant attacking football against a Bolton side who looked exposed at Anfield last time out. Goals at both ends look on the cards.

Those three strikers are the clear armband contenders, although midfield master craftsmen David Silva and Mikel Arteta are pushing in fourth and fifth. Their brand of Spanish flair should be given an airing in their home fixtures, and the strong confidence in City and Arsenal victories continues further down the poll as the likes of Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and Theo Walcott all figure highly in the current thinking.

Indeed, Luis Suarez, currently ranked tenth, is the only player outside of City, Arsenal and United in the top ten – the Uruguayan has an unenviable trip to the Britannia this weekend, and, having drawn a blank in the win over Bolton last time out, confidence from the Fantasy fraternity appears to have been dented. Notably, Suarez is amongst the most “transferred out” players going into Saturday’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline.

Want an outside bet? Defenders with attacking potential might be the route to follow. Both Jon Arne Riise and Leighton Baines (who is now expected to be available) are simmering outside our top ten but clearly offer returns at both ends of the pitch when Blackburn and Villa visit their home turf.

Plenty to ponder before the deadline bell tolls – be sure to place your vote in this week’s poll via the homepage middle column.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I've seen this asked in so many different ways and seems to be the main issue Wildcarders are trying to work out (myself included). What are peoples thoughts?

    RVP + Brunt

    or

    Walcott + Dzeko

It's such a close call and could mak ethe differcne between success or failure.

    B) Young and Hughes

Already have Rooney and RVP because although its alot of cash upfront, both these players can get more points on their own than a balanced midfield.

Would love the Young and Kompany combo but I cant, so which one is more important?

    Current squad is:-

    Given/Vorm
    Bosingwa/Enrique/S Taylor(Warnock,Caulker)
    Cahill/Yaya/Sinclair/Moses(Tiote)
    RVP/Aguero/Suarez

Already used my free transfer this week to do Torres - RVP. Is it worth a hit to try and sort the awful midfield out a bit? Have £2.1m in the bank so could do Sinclair - Arteta maybe?

I think it could be worth it, but... you have some very good big hitters there, that should carry you for another week, where you can then make the transfer. So question is, will Arteta score more than Sinclair? By 4 points? Probably yes actually. But its a gamble and one you prob don't need to take.

The Rooney/RVP combo is giving us some awsome captain choices for the next ten weeks:SWA, bla, BOL, NOR, SUN, eve, WBA/SUN, swa/nor, NEW/FUL, wig.

Those two are nailed on in my wc team. The last forward is harder though.

    - Suarez will probably be too expencive, forcing me to go with a very cheap midfield or defence.

    - Adebayor is in a new club, and spurs next fixtures are not great, even if they are not horrible.

    - Dzeko have been in my plans for the last two weeks, but becoming more and more uncertain. He is in awsome form, but he has played two internationals since the last gameweek and with the options City got on top and the upcoming CL matches, Dzeko might be rested for Wigan. If I decide to drop him, that can potentially hurt me bad since alot of poeple are going with him.

    - There is also the option to go with a cheaper third striker, to allow me/us to go with more heavy hitters in midfield. But I'm not sure that upgrading let us say Brut to Mata and going with Holt/Graham/Long over Dzeko/Suarez will give more points over the next gameweeks.

What have you guys with the RVP/Rooney combo gone with?

      Dzeko

stick with him.... i really cannot see mancini dropping their best striker so far.
Short term he is on fire, plus if you got him at 8.5 like me at least you will make a nice profit if he does become a bench warmer.

That's true, and I am leaning against Dzeko at the moment. Fingers crossed that he will start against Wigan.
