There’s another close-fought tussle atop the Captain Poll this week. Robin Van Persie’s quartet of goals over the break, albeit against the “might” of San Marino, has thrust him forward as the leading candidate. The Fantasy manager’s confidence is no doubt reinforced by the fact that Swansea arrive at the Emirates on Saturday having already suffered a battering on the road via a vibrant Man City performance, although Arsenal will go into the game licking deep Old Trafford wounds; it could get interesting if the Swans can keep them at bay early on.

Van Persie’s substantial attacking threat, bolstered by his set-piece involvement, has him out in front with City’s Edin Dzeko on his tail following his own four-goal salvo at Spurs in Gameweek three. The Bosnian will surely retain a starting role this weekend, despite the looming threat of Champions League rotation in the City camp. Roberto Mancini’s side have Wigan in the sights, a side who, believe it or not, have kept things reasonably tight to this point. Can the Latics stem the City tide, conducted by the brilliance of David Silva and a mummified Samir Nasri? It seems unlikely.

Wayne Rooney’s presence in the top rankings also comes as little surprise. Irresistible form, prolonged with a brace in Bulgaria, has him well placed to inflict more damage at the Reebok this weekend as United pitch their rampant attacking football against a Bolton side who looked exposed at Anfield last time out. Goals at both ends look on the cards.

Those three strikers are the clear armband contenders, although midfield master craftsmen David Silva and Mikel Arteta are pushing in fourth and fifth. Their brand of Spanish flair should be given an airing in their home fixtures, and the strong confidence in City and Arsenal victories continues further down the poll as the likes of Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and Theo Walcott all figure highly in the current thinking.

Indeed, Luis Suarez, currently ranked tenth, is the only player outside of City, Arsenal and United in the top ten – the Uruguayan has an unenviable trip to the Britannia this weekend, and, having drawn a blank in the win over Bolton last time out, confidence from the Fantasy fraternity appears to have been dented. Notably, Suarez is amongst the most “transferred out” players going into Saturday’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline.

Want an outside bet? Defenders with attacking potential might be the route to follow. Both Jon Arne Riise and Leighton Baines (who is now expected to be available) are simmering outside our top ten but clearly offer returns at both ends of the pitch when Blackburn and Villa visit their home turf.

Plenty to ponder before the deadline bell tolls – be sure to place your vote in this week’s poll via the homepage middle column.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Arshavin looked really good against the Republic. Might show it vs Swansea with Benayoun on bench.

I'm afraid to play Arshavin after international games, he usually looks morally empty after trips to Russia. Besides, with Arteta and Gervinho he doesn't look nailed on in the long-run, Walcott seems to be a safer option.

      He may play like this:

      Frimpong Ramsey
      Arteta

      Walcott RVP Benayoun

But he will be dropped once gervinho is back next week

One last slot left in my midfield, I'll give my reasons for each and if you care to give me a vote I'd appreciate it a lot.
    A) Young (Have Rooney but Young on set pieces - quite expensive and poor fixtures).
    B) Nasri (Have Silva but no Dzeko - not going to get set pieces and a minnor injury doubt fixtures are good)
    C) Mata (No Chelsea, god knows about set pieces - next two fixtures aren't great)
    D) Theo (Have RVP attacking role in the side probable but again injury doubt - bonus is I could upgrade a defender.

I think Sturridge is a great shout. I am getting him in as a cheap forward - no one even close in that price bracket.

Surely he is going to see Champs League time early on.

My front line is Ronaldo - Hernandez - Sturridge.

Spending on the back line a bit as well since the group stages is full of boring 1-0 games.

Anyone know of 5 cheapo ( 4 – 4.5 mil) defenders that will play everyweek for the CL fantasy league?

    So far i have:

Ooijer (AJAX) Abraham (Basel) Paulo Jorge (Apoel) Bordachev (BATE) & Tonei (Dianmo)

    Any better suggestions?

      Bad Idea IMO
Best Value in the game are the defenders

what? why do u think that?

Coming back to the question, IMO it's difficult to find solid 4-4.5 mil defenders. I've built my defense of 5-5.5 mil players, and I believe it will work out.

I would love to have a balanced team, but to shoe horn in Messi, roonpig and Ronaldo and a half decent midfield I need a crap defense.

I can honestly see the three mentioned above smashing in 10 or so goals each as they are likely to reach the later stages and Barca will no doubt win it again

    Yaya Toure > Mata
    Sessegnon > Arteta

    Worth a 4 point hit?

Also, how likely is Bent to start, currently doubtful on the FPL site.

And why are you hoping that? lol.

With the Yaya Toure > Mata transfer, i'm unsure as Man City have a much easier fixture, even if he is playing a lot deeper.

Yaya plays much deeper as you mention. I had him almost all last season, but this year he's more expensive and less likely to get goals an assist imo.

Mata is eager to show him self. And he's a goalscoring mid, could be the new Malouda. I'm going for him.

I'm not playing my wildcard. But if did i would have gone for Arteta. He will be on set peices left from the goal.

looks like a strong mid and attack. I would only change Bastos for Kagawa or Danny for example. I really like Bastos, especially because I had him in previous edition of UCLF, but I don't believe in him this year. I can see some better 7M options.
