There’s another close-fought tussle atop the Captain Poll this week. Robin Van Persie’s quartet of goals over the break, albeit against the “might” of San Marino, has thrust him forward as the leading candidate. The Fantasy manager’s confidence is no doubt reinforced by the fact that Swansea arrive at the Emirates on Saturday having already suffered a battering on the road via a vibrant Man City performance, although Arsenal will go into the game licking deep Old Trafford wounds; it could get interesting if the Swans can keep them at bay early on.

Van Persie’s substantial attacking threat, bolstered by his set-piece involvement, has him out in front with City’s Edin Dzeko on his tail following his own four-goal salvo at Spurs in Gameweek three. The Bosnian will surely retain a starting role this weekend, despite the looming threat of Champions League rotation in the City camp. Roberto Mancini’s side have Wigan in the sights, a side who, believe it or not, have kept things reasonably tight to this point. Can the Latics stem the City tide, conducted by the brilliance of David Silva and a mummified Samir Nasri? It seems unlikely.

Wayne Rooney’s presence in the top rankings also comes as little surprise. Irresistible form, prolonged with a brace in Bulgaria, has him well placed to inflict more damage at the Reebok this weekend as United pitch their rampant attacking football against a Bolton side who looked exposed at Anfield last time out. Goals at both ends look on the cards.

Those three strikers are the clear armband contenders, although midfield master craftsmen David Silva and Mikel Arteta are pushing in fourth and fifth. Their brand of Spanish flair should be given an airing in their home fixtures, and the strong confidence in City and Arsenal victories continues further down the poll as the likes of Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and Theo Walcott all figure highly in the current thinking.

Indeed, Luis Suarez, currently ranked tenth, is the only player outside of City, Arsenal and United in the top ten – the Uruguayan has an unenviable trip to the Britannia this weekend, and, having drawn a blank in the win over Bolton last time out, confidence from the Fantasy fraternity appears to have been dented. Notably, Suarez is amongst the most “transferred out” players going into Saturday’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline.

Want an outside bet? Defenders with attacking potential might be the route to follow. Both Jon Arne Riise and Leighton Baines (who is now expected to be available) are simmering outside our top ten but clearly offer returns at both ends of the pitch when Blackburn and Villa visit their home turf.

Plenty to ponder before the deadline bell tolls – be sure to place your vote in this week’s poll via the homepage middle column.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Hey guys, on a wildcard, my team currently is:

    Krul (Vorm)
Kompany, Bosingwa, Enrique (De Laet, Simpson)
    Arteta, Silva, Mata, Brunt (Ferguson)
    Dzeko, Rooney, Suarez

I want to get rid of Ferguson and put someone like Dyer or Moses in and also maybe get rid of Arteta and squeeze in RVP for Dzeko/Suarez. Any suggestions?

You can get 0.5/0.6 from Enrique to Brown (rotate with Simpson)

Petrov for Arteta gives you another 2.5, and that could get you to RvP from Suarez.

Change to be used on Ferguson.

Right, I think I've solved all my issues

Time to let go of Suarez, and just keep the funds required to bring him in later.

Rooney/RvP/Dzeko up top, cheap as chips mid, def and gk to match.

Final question is Silva or Young then.

Fixtures and Form for Silva (and he's cheaper)

Worse Fixtures but better Form for Young (less likely to be rotated)

He could easily drop in price, though - a lot of people who've bought him since his 23 pointer will be the type of kneejerkers who'll sell him again after a couple of poor weeks.

*not saying that everyone who bought him is a kneejerker, but a decent proportion will be.

      Keepers - an average 7/10
Defenders - Clichy is a risk, Arsenal are still Arsenal so not happy with Mertesacker - say 5/10
Midfielders - there are better value options than Lampard, and Osman is a punt, not against punts at all - just pointing it out. I like Brunt/Cabaye - 7/10 because its at least orignal
Forwards - 9/10 nice mix of proven and punt

Good strikers but at the expense of the rest of your team. I'm not a big fan of that strategy myself. Nice to see someone having Ruiz in there squad tho, almost makes up for you having Lamps.

Ya, I could see the sense in that with your cheaper midfield options but not with Lamps. I don't think his being on set pieces and pens justifies his heavy price tag, not at the expense of the rest of your team anyways. I also agree with the other opinions about Clichy, Kompany is a way better option IMO.

is downgrading walcott to arteta worth the 1.0 that will help me upgrade my 4.5 mid to tchoyi or maybe even squeez 0.5 from somewhere to get in brunt?

Liverpool are best odds 2.75 to keep a clean sheet, Norwich are 3.4. Chelsea and United are no doubt much lower odds. Assuming the bookies are correct, and they nearly always are, I think that answers your question.

Is it a legitimate strategy to try to split your players so you've got about half playing in the Tuesday games, and half on the Wednesdays?

Gives you more options to change your captaincy and make subs between the 2 matchdays.

So anyone else spotted the PR nonsense Beckham back to QPR so he can try to push his way into the Olympic team via a media campaign (is max clifford involved?) and get QPR a load of money and air time to satify an egomaniac owner already dictating transfer policy

Have the give him credit. He does know how to milk any situation.

He might even get time to play some football, maybe .

Eh? There's zero chance of Beckham being one of the 3 overage players picked when he's miles away from the England team, let alone a GB team.

And I'm pretty sure Beckham is way, way out of Max Clifford's league these days.

Team GB top dogs will want him involved for the money generation.

And now suddenly 9 months prior to it all kicking off he may be moving to a team in london.

Its not about picking a football. Big business.

David Beckham - 'I want to play football for Team GB at the Olympics'. So do I, doesn't mean it's going to happen.

I'm sure the FA would love for Beckham still to be in the England team (big business), but he's not.

Surely the manager will have the final say on the selection?

Great - Crouch, Defoe and Youness Kaboul as the overagers, then.

Beckham will probably be manager at this rate.

            Is there even a manager?

Besides Beckham saying he wants to play in a semi serious footie tournament on home soil has alot more clout than saying it for real football.

Just wait for the media campaign.

I can see the Xmas appeal now right after the Queen speech

"David loves England is is a engish legend , do your bit and join in protest to have him included in the games he won for us"

Stranger things have happened..... like the time he signed for a football team and didnt play football yet got more coverage then real matches going on

England (well, GB I suppose) is about the only country that doesn't take Olympic football seriously, but I take your point.

If the last line is about the MLS, 'real matches', really? At Pizza Hut Park and the Home Depot Centre...

Just happened around the time Spurs were lobbying for ownership of the Olympic stadium in the area.

Im sure Becks was needed to am ....train with the first team.

I hear you, Db, and I agree with you in spirit ... but is the 'fact' [let's stipulate it as such] that money is a prime mover in these decisions always 100% negative?

If Beckham makes the games more profitable, then doesn't some of that money filter into athletics in the UK? Might it not increase the visibility of the games and of the UK in general? The businesses that make profits off of this are also the ones that make the games possible, to some extent, and enhance the ability to get future tournaments [WC, etc]?

Sure, money-grubbing corporations and personalities debase sports and life in general in many ways. But possibly they contribute in others.

You're not a Communist, after all, are you? 😉 😀
