Mark may be sitting tight on his transfers after a poor start to the season, but there are plenty of managers banging their heads against the wall over early season tip-offs such as Victor Moses and Stephane Sessegnon. A well thought-out differential might be just the tonic needed to clear away the resultant headache, then, and as we begin the build-up to another gameweek, we’ve picked out our three favourite ‘alternative’ picks once again. After the vindication of a Daniel Sturridge 8 pointer last time out, I’m feeling confident….

Shaun Wright-Phillips

The former England winger produced an eye-catching display on his debut against Newcastle on Monday night and, as an out of position midfielder playing up front alongside Jay Bothroyd, he looks great value at just 6.4m. Despite ending goalless, QPR looked as threatening as they have all season and Wright-Phillips was instrumental in the majority of their attacking play. He could have had a hat-trick of assists in the first half and managed five shots on goal in total- if he can put in that sort of performance every week then attacking returns are surely a formality in games to come.

Upcoming fixtures for QPR look decent with a home tie against Villa, a trip to struggling Fulham and a home game against Blackburn following their trip to Molineux this weekend. If you’ve been holding off on Taraabt until QPR settle into the Premier League, then you may well be tempted to invest in Wright Phillips instead and with ownership of just 1.3%, could be rewarded with an excellent differential return over the coming weeks.

Emmanuel Adebayor

Tottenham fans have been crying out for a striker of Adebayor’s quality after a toothless strike force of Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Peter Crouch found the net just 18 times last season. Despite the Arsenal links, the Togolese striker looks set to become a firm favourite with the fans after scoring on his debut last weekend, in an energetic and thoroughly impressive all round display. A great example of a ‘confidence player’, Adebayor’s enthusiasm has been known to wane as a season goes on, but at the moment he is full of it, and looks like a steal at just 8.0m.

At home to Liverpool this weekend will be a slightly tougher test than Wolves last week, but Tottenham will still feel confident they can pick up all three points. Redknapp fielded a virtual reserve side in the UEFA cup last night, so the usual European hangover for Tottenham won’t apply here and with no new first-team injuries to worry about, Adebayor and Defoe are expected to head up an attacking 4-4-2 formation that will be set up to attack Liverpool from the off. Harry Redknapp has indicated today that Rafael Van der Vaart could return on Sunday, but the likelihood is that Defoe would be the one to drop out if the Dutchman makes his comeback.

Gervinho

Gervinho returns to action this weekend after his three match ban for slapping Joey Barton, and the Ivory Coast striker will be looking to hit the ground running as Arsenal face a Blackburn side struggling for form. Priced at 8.9m in the FPL game, he isn’t the cheapest pick but at 3m less than Robin Van Persie and owned by just 1.3%, he could still be a great way into Arsenal’s attractive run of fixtures if you’re looking to save some cash.

Comfortable on the right or left flank, Gervinho is expected to start on the left against Blackburn but with the freedom to roam as part of a fluid front three, as was the case against Udinese in their Champions League qualifier. In this role, Gervinho can play a key part in the Arsenal attack against a poor Blackburn team, and stands a great chance of picking up some decent points. Considering his current total of minus one, it can only get better from here.

Have I got my line-up right for this week:

    Vorm
    Kompany/Ward/Baines(c)
    Brunt/Silva/Young/Petrov
    RvP(v)/Adebayor/Sturridge

    Schwarzer/Dyer/Bosingwa/de Laet

Great lineup, bad captain choice, imo.

I have Baines and there's no way I'd captain him this week. Sorry.

If you can't captain RVP away to Blackburn-who haven't kept a clean sheet all season-then, quite frankly, what's he doing in your team?

The way Arsenal are playing do you see them putting more than 2 past Rovers? (Ask me this last year and I'd agree with what you say)

So my logic goes that at best RvP is looking at the 13 points, but a likely 9 (goal + 3bps) in a win where Arse score 1/2 goals. Baines on the other hand could get a clean sheet + goal/assist for a 9 point + haul after BPs.

Obviously Baines could get 2 points if Everton labour to a 1-1 draw (but I'd reckon Baines gets BPs in that regardless), RvP is more likely to get at least an assist but lacks the pure upside of Baines.

Its not easy, but its how I'm thinking.

Its probably that same thinking that has led you to ignore Rooney too then?

Seriously, though, why have Van Persie (instead of Rooney) and then not at least give him the armband in a matchup which, historically speaking, he has always done well in?

Here's a stat for you: Robin van Persie has scored 10 goals in his last 11 Premier League games and eight in 10 games against Blackburn.

Everton have picked up 1 point at home so far this season. They lost to a QPR team that was essentially a Championship team at that time (already, thanks to Tony Fernandes, only 4 players from that day remain in the starting line up).

I doubt Everton get the cleanie which really you'd need to justify captaining Baines and, of the two of them, I know which one is most likely to score a brace......

RVP. Aguero could rip it up vs Fulham away but rotation risk is always present. Man c scored 4 there last season (tevez hat-trick). Any 1 of 3 Man C strikers could score big in that game, and choosing the right one is a lottery so RVP for security, and bburn are crap

Aguero doesn't play and RvP takes the armband.
Aguero starting or coming off the bench is dangerous.

I think Silva is safest choice this week. Can see City sticking a few past a Fulham team that played only yesterday.

If I had Silva and Rooney I'd stick it on Silva. Alas, I only have Dzeko and Rooney and I dare not give it to anyone but Rooney.

    rooney-dzeko-suarez

    subs: given-bosingwa-briggs-brunt

    a) trf out briggs for Jones as briggs is a non-starter so waste of 1 place, and no home defenders this week.

    b) replace brunt. Maybe with anderson or MPetrov.

can't shake the feeling odemwingie's going to be one of the top scorers this week. Seems a perfect game for him. Swansea's high line and expansive tactics leaves a lot of open space for the counter. Granted he won't see much of the ball but he should get a handful of very clear cut chances. Gotta feel sorry for the slow, unfit monk. I had planned to save my trade and get wingie & mata next week. Now i'm thinking might be better doing dzeko to wingie now. Dzeko looks good this week too though, hmmm. Quick poll, dzeko 60 min ful vs wingie 90 min swa?

swansea's good defence is because they keep the ball and are very patient. When they lose it they are wide open for the counter. I agree on dzeko though. Could burn me bad especially with the high ownership.

My predicitions for some games and who will score the most points in FPL.

    Spurs 1 - 3 Liverpool = Suarez.
    Fulham 1 - 4 City = Silva.
Man Utd 2 - 1 Chelsea = Hernandez. ( Think that Roonpig is tired)
    Blackburn 0 - 2 Arsenal = Persie.
    Wolves 2 - 0 Qpr = Ward.

Fulham's weak spot has been at right back this season, having conceded 40% of their shots (typical value ~ 15%) from the left side of the pitch. Samir Nasri is likely to get the nod to start at left wing and will hoping to take advantage against a weakened Fulham defence.
