Rooney and Hernandez Ruled out of Basel Game

As you may have seen from our latest tweet, Sir Alex Ferguson has been speaking ahead of tomorrow night’s Champions League game with Basel.

In a report direct from the Man United website, Fergie has confirmed both Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez will both miss out in the home clash against the Swiss side, offering a chance for the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen in the starting XI tomorrow evening.

When asked for an update on Rooney’s hamstring injury, the United boss was fairly non-committal:

He’s not playing tomorrow. It can be difficult to assess a hamstring injury. Obviously we hope we have him back quickly. He did a bit of jogging this morning but that’s all. It’s difficult to say.

On Hernandez, there was more cause for optimism:

[Hernandez’s injury] is straightforward, it’s a dead leg he got on Saturday. He should be ready for next Saturday.

The quotes leave Fantasy managers still hedging their bets on Rooney’s availability for the Old Trafford showdown with Norwich on Saturday afternoon, then. Any further indication nearer the time will play a significant part in Fantasy transfers ahead of the weekend- given his recent barnstorming form, Rooney would undoubtedly be a nailed-on pick for captaincy but with an international break to follow, it’s impossible to second-guess the United boss right now.

With an away trip to Liverpool in Gameweek 7 followed by a derby with Man City the following weekend, Fergie will surely not take any risks with his star forward but right now, it’s clear he’s keeping his cards firmly to his chest.

                    I think...to be honest, some people over-reacted here.
                    I lived in Pakistan and Afghanistan for over 6 years, travelling back and forth, and the 'p word' was not considered racist.
                    I only lived in England for the first 8 years of my life, so I have no idea how it is taken over there (obviously not very kindly)
                    I also have a half Pakistani wife (which may be why I have had experience of it not being frowned upon) who does not find it offensive, also, currently living in Australia, I know why JA didn't know it was considered racist.
                    Different cultures on here boys, we have to remember that was is accepted in some places isn't elsewhere, especially when talking Pakistani's and the English. Lesson learned, don't want to see ANOTHER silly fight on here.

      Definitely do not need to wildcard this team. It's a very good team. If it was me, i would downgrade Baines and upgrade Lita but that is your call because Baines is a very good differential.

            Not very often, but just because the media has taken to him doesn't mean he is great. I haven't seen play for Lille so can't really comment.

    With Rooney out for a couple of GWs at least (we think) that will leave me with no Man Utd attacking cover. My current plan for a 4 point hit is Walcott > Young to cover that issue and then Rooney > RVP for some Arsenal cover. Any good chaps? would leave with the team below for GW7

      Team looks good. Had same prob last night. Shipped Rooney for RVP, and got MU cover via Nasri > Nani. Nani served me well last year and reckon better mid-term points potential than Young.

    Hiya lads, just got in, checked all the bonus points and that, and ive been awarded 1, yes 1 bonus point from my whole team lol.

    Anyways, was looking to see if anyone can spot where i am going wrong, as getting toasted in my mini league already, i know the season is young though.

    Team is:

    Given (Ruddy)

    Enrique - Simpson - Jones (De Laet, N.Taylor)

    Mata - Meireles - Young - Nasri (Ferguson)

    Van Persie - Aguero - Best

    NOTE: I've already transferred in van persie, and aguero for rooney and Torres. I know my subs aren't the best pick either, and should of held out to see what rooney situation is.

    But as it stand for the main skeleton of the team, where am i going wrong? Need help BADLY. Anyone care to comment?

      Get rid of Meireles. You already got Chelsea cover with Mata.
      Get a cheaper mid like SWP, Taarabt, Ramsey, Petrov etc. and upgrade Ferguson to a useful midfielder to give you more options.

      As someone suffering from same probs as you, and lost as to why my results are so poor this season, maybe best not to listen to my feedback, but anyway . . . On whole team looks great now. If you've got RVP maybe worth shipping out Arteta and get in Silva if poss. I'd take Nani over Young, and get rid of De Laet. If funds needed, downgrade Meireles and/or Given. Just food for thought. Feel free (and probably best) to ignore 🙂

      1. No point having mereiles in your team mate, Mata's got the blues covered for you. SWP, Sinclair and countless others are going to get far more pts than mereiles at a cheaper price.

      2. Ferguson is dead - weight. I really do not advise having a player simply to free up cash.

      3. You could do with at least one more top defender, Bosingwa and Kompany are the obvious choices and take out De Laet as you already have Norwich cover in the form of Ruddy.

      4. Last and very much least, I'd prefer Nani to Young but you need to sort out the abovementioned basics before thinking of intricacies like that.
