As domestic matters pause for the international break, our post-Gameweek regular takes a look at a Fantasy favourite refusing to go quietly and an injury quandary for another heavy-hitter. Elsewhere, the Cottagers find their spark at last to provide plenty mid-price potential, as Martin Jol’s strikers cut loose to destroy the hapless hoops…

The Player

Subbed at half time against Man United, benched for the following home game with Swansea, many had written off Frank Lampard’s Fantasy potential. Sunday’s game at the Reebok, though, served a timely reminder of his capabilities; a hat-trick and the three bonus points produced a twenty point haul and in just one game, Lampard more than doubled his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) total for the season.

Sitting on 42 points, he’s the fourth-top scoring midfielder, only 6 points behind David Silva and Nani, despite both starting every game so far this term. In terms of points per game, only one midfielder –Ashley Young- betters his 7.0, with 7.5 in comparison; all this without a penalty at Bolton, too.

What’s frustrating for Fantasy managers is that while Lampard proved he is still more than capable of producing the goods when given the game time, he’s no longer an automatic first-choice selection in the Chelsea first XI. Andre Villas-Boas’ need for more dynamism in the Chelsea central area will see him rest Lampard from time to time in order to maintain a freshness- regardless of the eye-catching display, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to run the risk of a 11.6 bench-warmer.

The Team

Winless after six league games under Martin Jol, it took a visit from their nearest rivals to wake Fulham from their top-flight slumber. While the Cottagers have prospered in Europe, they’ve been domestically woeful, with just four points to their name prior to QPR’s arrival at the Cottage on Sunday.

An incredible six-goal triumph saw four Fulham players return double figure Fantasy hauls, with 5.1 Andrew Johnson –in his first start since gameweek 2- leading the way with 20 to his name after a brilliant hat-trick. Danny Murphy and Clint Dempsey both found the net and the Fulham defence also shone, showing a certain resolve to record their second clean sheet on the spin.

Bobby Zamora, once again, demonstrated just how key a figure he is to this Fulham side. Having missed out last week through illness, Zamora returned to the starting XI and scored for the third appearance in a row. Add an assist and 2 bonus points and Zamora has averaged 8.8 FPL points per appearance- the second best tally this season. Only Wayne Rooney has returned more points per game than the 6.7 priced-forward.

The Talking Point

With so much doubt over Wayne Rooney’s availability for the Norwich game, many Fantasy managers had made their minds up early and sold on. As many as 154K shipped Rooney out, with Sergio Aguero the main target, brought in by 135K as a result of a trip to Blackburn.

Twenty-six minutes in, though, and Aguero was limping out of the Ewood Park proceedings, with a groin problem ending his Gameweek on 1 point. Samir Nasri stepped off the bench and transformed the game, grabbing a goal and two assists as City heaped further misery on Steve Kean- the Frenchman, meanwhile, bagged 17 Fantasy points for just over an hour’s work.

With Rooney now recovered, Aguero has joined up with the Argentina squad and will be monitored ahead of games against Chile and Venezuela. Once again, Fantasy managers are left in a quandary over a big-money forward, though with a fortnight before the gameweek eight clash with Aston Villa, time is on their side this time.

Should Aguero fail to make it, Roberto Mancini can at least turn to Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli- at 8.6 and 8.5 respectively, they’d be potential bargains if the prognosis proves downbeat, given City’s average of more than three goals per game and- thanks to Carlos Tevez- little other striking alternatives.

Yeah I am definately keeping until (if) he actually doesn't start.
I just think he is too poor defensively, but he does seem in favour. As shown on the weekend AVB thinks Ivan is a better player defensively.
Bought him at 5.5, him and Jones have been very good pickups, especially Jones once Vidic comes back and Man U's fixtures become easy.

Right I wonder if anyone can help. My money league is based on monthly totals but it doesn't seem that points hits are taken into account??? My mate scored 47 (-4) this week...his head to head shows as 43 but his total in the month 47. Having said this, something isn't right in addition to this. I totalled up my 3 months so far and got 392 but I have 388. However I have taken 3 four point hits this season so something does not add up!! Please help cos there is money riding on this!

In the monthly manager competitions, hits in the 1st week of the month don't count. It's been a flaw of FPL since it began.

I think your points hits show up as part of the month preceding the 11:30 deadline.

so if the game week falls on the 1st then the hit shows as coming off the previous month and does not show on the current month.

If you add up all your game week scores and take the 12 points off it should equal your current total. The monthly values are a little flawed I think...

      p.s. I might be wrong!

    I'm in a bit of a quandry...

Dropped Baines last week, so I have 2.8m in the bank, but I can't work out what to change in my team. I was going to bring in Aguero, but I am quite happy with Suarez at the moment. Any ideas?

    Given Vorm
Enrique Kompany Bosingwa (Simpson) (Taylor (Swansea))
    Nani Silva Moses Dyer Simpson
    Rooney Suarez Adebayor

I guess Moses is the weakness at the moment. If I dropped him I have 7.7m to spend.

    Any thoughts?

how about Martin Petrov for Moses? He's 5.8m, a dead ball specialist and has reasonable fixtures between now and the new year (except a match at Spurs). And...he's been involved in 5 out of Bolton's 9 goals so far this season (all except the 4 scored against QPR in GW1).

Barkley to Petrov is definitely a sound move though. Something tells me you´ve only had Ade a week anyway...I wouldn´t get itchy to chase a players points from last week.

That is why I'm amazed when someone suggests a certain player will kept in their team all season. I know the poll only refers to that particular week, but how quickly these players are no longer considered makes every player dispendable. With injuries, loss of form, better opportunities at a lesser cost, suspension, double gameweeks etc. makes no-one safe. Similar noises were made around GW4 or GW5 last season about Drogba and I made this very point then. So look at your team now name 3 you will keep and I bet they are not still in your team after Xmas (if not 4 or 5 weeks from now).

Is Taarabt > Ramsey a good move for this week? I know Taarabt has a good fixture but could see him being dropped after storming off, regardless of what Warnock has said to the press. Also considering Welbeck > Sturridge but actually hoping Hernandez gets injured on international break.

Wishing injuries upon others? Tut, Tut!

I think that the transfers decent enough as a long term option, but I don't think either will score massively. Worth doing for a freebie, definately not for a hit... I'd rather take a punt with Anderson I think.

I´m right where Mac is, I had Danny Week 1 and finally had to dump him after his hammy, so a Chich injury would be fair play in my book. Besides I´ve made my feelings known on the Danny vs Chich comparisons. One´s a poacher and the other one is a dynamic scorer. Given the right conditions I´d want both at some point, and have eaten well in the past with Chich. But I want Danny going into Liverpool. Don´t know if Clev will play but with he and Anderson in the mid they will become and extremely left footed team which seems to bode well for Young owners. I liked the chemistry on that side with Young Danny, Clev and Rooney.

Are all these other options on all set pieces for their team if not how can you say their better ?

No point saying oh their cheaper so thier a better option because that doesnt mean they will get more points than baines over the season.

I treat baines like an extra midfileder as he is on all set pieces and he will outscore over the season a midfileder at the same price as him like bale and modric.

They are better because they score more points and play for a better team, and with the extra cash you can upgrade Midfield/Forwards where the points are made 90% of the time, that is why they are better, the cheapness is just a reason why. Ahh duh.

Everton were a better team last year, they dont look the same. Bonus's seem to only be handed out to goalscorers now, and there was no Kompany, Jones, Enrique or Bosingwa last season at much better prices playing for top 5 clubs.
Even IF he is top defender at the end of the year, the money spent elsewhere would have got you more points.

But we all know that Everton is a sh&t team at this point of the season anyway. So this discussion is with blinders in a way. The people that bought him knew this (most at least) and were looking for that extra early season differential. period. With 2-9-8-2 the jury I guess is still out.

Hopefully they get smart before that and let him team as a striker with Di Santo and let the real winger (Van Aanholt) run that side of the field and give him some service.

I think if you click on show replies it should show all replies for that thread including replies to replies etc. Since you've already expressed an interest in that thread, I can't think why you'd only be interested in one strand of replies.

Similarly I think the replies count should include all nested replies for that thread.

You can have all threads open if you want by using the tickbox in the top left. However, we felt that by closing replies by default it was easier to scan comments and then open the threads you wanted to read or contribute too. Personally, I much prefer this but we have given users the option via the tickbox.

Yes Mark I prefer the 'closed by default' threads as well - my point is though that if you express interest in one *particular* thread, then by clicking 'show replies' on that thread it might then show all replies for that thread, including the replies to replies etc. Because by clicking on it you'd be interested in all discussion on that thread - currently you have to click on show replies/show replies/show replies as you explode the various sub-conversations of that thread.

You could tick the box to show all replies top-left, but that would explode all threads.

Klasnic or Petrov for Bolton cover?

Arteta and Dzeko are the players i've got to play around with. Dzeko might be worth keeping if Aguero isn't fit though.

Sturridge...6.5 for a player in a potential top 4 side who should score far more goals than Newcastle. Ba's fitness is just as much a concern as the Sturridge rotation threat for me.

Klasnic, he is nailed on and seems healthy and they NEED him BAD. The other two, Ba especially has a knee thats driving on borrowed tie. Sturridge as much as I like him is on a team that is apt not to even look to his side of the field for 20 game minutes not to mention his injury risk (ankle, hamstring and knee).

Mata if you want a silva type player consistent points most weeks.

Mata seem to pass the ball instead of finishing, a bit like Modric. With Lampard back, he may also loose set pieces. I am swapping for VDV, he is on set pieces and penalties, and was a great fantasy player last year. Tottenham have good fixtures as well. If Mata start scoring I may go back.

Hi - I want to use my WC but on the other hand I only really have 3 changes that I am desperate to make. Is that sensible, or should I wait for a time when I get unlucky with injuries?

    Vorm - Given

    Berra - Enrique - Kompany - Bosingwa - Simpson

    Brunt - Moses - Nani - Walcott - Silva

    Adebayor - Rooney - Holt

My changes would be something like

    Bannon > Moses
    Ramsey > Walcott
    Anyone > Holt

I wish Rio all the best for his future, but hope it's not in the England squad. He has been a great player for us but now is the time to find the new generation. I believe in the past England have held onto the "big" players for too long and often stifled younger players careers.Or played players who are injured or off form because of who they are, instead of giving young players on the bench their chances.

Rio still has a big part to play imo. If you ditch older more experienced players too quickly (like Wenger does) you lack the leaders and steady heads needed in pressure situations. Even an out of form Rio is better than Jags etc too.

Certainly a valid point AP on retaining experience around the team. I would probably play the youth first halves and if necessary bring the experienced player on as required. You are quite right about the pressure situations. Though sometimes playing without fear wins through.

It's a fine balance. I am quite liking AVB approach though. Not affraid to drop the likes of Torres if Sturridge is providing the goods and he is not.

I see both your points here, a very fine line between letting go of experience and allowing the youth to prove themselves.
