It’s a relatively short and sharp Scribbles this afternoon, with much of today’s papers focusing on a return to the Liverpool starting XI for skipper Steven Gerrard. Carlos Tevez could learn his Man City fate tomorrow, while Sergio Aguero is still very much a doubt for the weekend…

Reports this morning suggest Steven Gerrard will make his first start in over six months this Saturday lunchtime. The early weekend kick-off sees Liverpool face Man United and having made three brief sub appearances over the last few weeks, Gerrard has upped his training over the international break and looks set to hand Kenny Dalglish a major boost by returning to the first XI against the league leaders. While there was no outright affirmation from the Reds boss, he seems positive ahead of the weekend:

[blockquote author=”Kenny Dalglish” position=”on Gerrard’s fitness”]”A fit Steven Gerrard strengthens this football club, no question. If you have Steven in your squad, it’s going to raise the profile and standard. We want to have a really strong squad – and him being in it makes it that much stronger.” [/blockquote]

Doubts continue over the availability of Sergio Aguero ahead of Man City’s home clash with Aston Villa. The Argentine is reportedly still struggling with the groin problem that saw him limp out of the Gameweek seven match at Blackburn. With Mario Balotelli also suffering from a back injury, it could leave Edin Dzeko as the club’s only first-team forward right now- City coach David Platt spoke to the Manchester Evening News on the matter:

[blockquote author=”David Platt” position=”on the prospect of missing Aguero”]”We have plenty of ways of playing. [In] Yaya Touré, David Silva and Samir Nasri we have three who can all work off the striker. Let’s just concentrate on what we have available. We know we have a squad of players which means we can put a team out against anyone and make a good game of it.”[/blockquote]

Carlos Tevez may learn his City fate over the next twenty-four hours. Having now served his two-week club ban, the striker is due to fly back from Argentina and report for training on Thursday- City look likely to have made a decision on his future before then. Good news for Tevez is that his old club Corinthians are still in the hunt for his signature come January- general manager Edu claims he is in England to begin discussions:

[blockquote author=”Edu” position=”on Corinthian’s interest in Tevez”]”We are here to start talks, to see how the situation is. We will see if we can do a deal. He [Tevez] is very famous in Brazil and everyone loves him and the fans want him. Then, I’m going to Brazil to talk to the president and see if we can do something. There are a lot of things to think about.”[/blockquote]

Reports from the Nigeria camp suggest Peter Odemwingie is due to undergo ankle surgery tomorrow. The striker has struggled to replicate the blistering form of his previous debut season for West Brom and though the club have yet to confirm this, Nigeria coach Samson Siasia has said:

[blockquote author=”Samson Siasia” position=”Nigeria’s coach on Odemwingie’s ankle injury”]”It is his career on the line, and it is very important for us to put the health and welfare of our players first above everything else.(Odemwingie) has been playing with pain-killers and after speaking with the doctor, we all agreed that he should have his surgery as soon as possible.”[/blockquote]

Roy Hodgson has since revealed, however, that Odemwingie will travel to Amsterdam along with Zoltan Gera tomorrow and expects the player to be given the all-clear.

With Saturday’s early kick-off against Liverpool looming large, there is unofficial talk of Javier Hernandez perhaps missing out for Man United in the crucial trip to Anfield. With Mexico playing Brazil at 2.30am on Wednesday, Sir Alex Ferguson may decide to give Hernandez a break- Danny Welbeck’s withdrawal from the England U21 squad has furthered speculation that this is in Fergie’s thinking. Fabio is also in the Brazil squad, though his omission from the United line-up would have less of an impact, with plenty alternatives to cover his absence.

Wilson Palacios looks set for an imminent return to the Stoke first-team. The midfielder has played just two games for the Potters since his late August move from Spurs but Tony Pulis has put this down to a general lack of fitness:

[blockquote author=”Tony Pulis” position=”on Wilson Palacios’ fitness”]”I just think he needs a mini pre-season to get himself up and running. That’s all he’s lacking. We’re trying to get him fully fit as soon as possible, but he’s already shown in training what he’s capable of doing.”[/blockquote]

Arsene Wenger received some positive injury news for a change yesterday. Ahead of the Emirates game with Sunderland, Laurent Koscielny, Johan Djourou and Wojciech Szczesny all look set to be passed fit and available- this would allow Alex Song to slot back into a central midfield role alongside Mikel Arteta.

I remember JC getting two goals and an assist at Three Point Lane for me a couple of seasons ago, in what was one of the very few games I ever owned him in.

Then Avram took him off for Alex, we went 5 at the back and threw away the lead. Cretinous man.

Hey guys, first dilemma of the season, I would greatly appreciate some opinions.
    Here is my team:

    Given, Vorm,
    Bosingwa, Riise, Brown, Kompany, Simpson,
    Silva, Bannan, Anderson, Arteta, Taarabt,
    Rooney, Aguero, Sturridge.

So I've already done [Mikel > Bannan] this week & I'm tempted to do
    [Anderson > Ramsey] & [Arteta > Modric]
with next weeks transfers being (provisionally)
    [Brown > Enrique] & [Taarabt > Sinclair]
I know that 16 points is a big hit but do you think I'll make it back?

Frankly, Rocky, no I don't. As a rule, unless you've got DGWs, points hits are seldom worth it. Both transfers look unnecessary to me, good fixtures for both Spurs/Gooners, plus Anderson has been pretty solid for Mancs, and has more points.

By the way, tis is your second dilemma, the first is sorting out your broken team link. 🙂

I'd then have Vorm in goal, instead of Krul with Simpson in defence (spreading the risk)

What does everyone think of this team? Ideally trying to catch up by 100 points in the next 5 gameweeks against the leaders of my own league - oh the humiliation. I'm trying to use the big guns in attack to haul in the points since let's be honest: it's more likely for Nani to score and assist and get bonus points than John Terry/Vidic/Any other expensive defender to get a cleansheet AND pick up bp or assist.

    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Simpson Berra SwanseaTaylor (Gabbidon, Woodgate)
Silva Young Nani Van der Vaart (Dyer)
    Dzeko Adebayor Suarez

Apart from your suggestions which I'd love to hear I'm also considering changing Young and Dzeko in the future to Mata and Hernandes. What is the better combo!? I'm thinking I need the Chelsea coverage and also Hernandes is just a brilliant striker and racked up goals with ease last season.
Thank you all and good night!

well, it looks good but i dont think having two utd mids and no rooney is the way to go. i'd bring someone like ramsey, petrov or any other 6-7 mid and take young out. that shd give u the cash to bring rooney into the team
hernandez is brilliant, no doubt but u can't look beyond rooney if ur looking for utd coverage up front

Thanks for the reply! Ahh man I thought about having Rooney or Aguero for ages, I really did. I'm a Man united fan so ofc Rooney is someone I want in the team badly. But I have nothing in the bank so I'd have to drop Young to Tiote or Ferguson which severely effects my option of having a quality first team week in and week out. Do you think Dzeko to Rooney is worth dropping Young or even a possible Mata to Tiote?

Dzeko>Hernandes is probably a sound move, but after this GW. Not so convinced by Mata. Sturridge is Chelsea option because of discount price but I'm not too fussed for Chelsea players otherwise.

But Young and Nani looks overkill, so maybe one to Mata is owrth doing, if you like the boy.

Also, if you're rotating Vorm, I would look to switch Naylor to another good rotation cheap DEF, doubling at home on Swans might be too much.

Thanks for the reply 🙂 Yeah Mata really does frustrate the hell out of me. He does a decent job on an international level (for both spain and chelsea) but can't seem to pull it off here. I admit having both Young and Nani does feel a bit desperate and Dzeko has been patchy so far so maybe Hernandes really is worth it because of his consistency as it will mean more bonus points over the course of the season. Who do you suggest I swap Taylor for - or Naylor haha - since I have no money in the bank. I'm thinking someone from Wigan like Lopez to just bench until easy fixtures are available.

BRUT, check next half dozen fixtures on FPL site and look for a team that dove-tails home/away well with other 4 DEFs.

Worth thinking about Kaz's suggestion above re: Rooney too.

Ok thanks yeah I'll get onto that right now. I guess researching defensive fixtures should pay off in the long run 🙂 And yeah I'll have a real think about Rooney. Just realised that actually I had 6.5 left over even if I brought in Rooney and took out Young and Dzeko! Now my options are: Young and Dzeko/Mata and Hernandes/ Larsson and Rooney. This is a proper tester XD

I used to use the website below to see what games were coming up live on TV. http://www.livesportontv.com/football

However have recently noticed that the site does not include games on any of the ITV channels and now also doesnt include Sky Sports which kind of defeats the whole point of the site.

Does anyone know of any good alternatives to see what live sport is coming up?

He has a hammy. I certainly wouldn't risk it.

"Emmanuel Adebayor has suffered an injury blow and is facing a race to be fit for Tottenham's trip to Newcastle on Sunday week.

Adebayor pulled a hamstring in the north London derby win over former club Arsenal on Sunday and is undergoing intensive treatment.

Togo striker Adebayor has been in superb form for Tottenham since arriving on loan and Harry Redknapp will be desperate for him to be fit.

Spurs boss Redknapp has set his sights on the top four this season and will be keen for Adebayor to maintain his early form."

Doesn't sound hopeful then, which raises the case of having VDV in ones team! I got Ade at 8m so I will have to bench him if he doesn't play (throwing 0.5m for one game is madness).

'Arry gave an interview re: Adebayor and his need to drop his wages if he wants to join on a permanent basis. Didn't mention an injury at all. And that previous info was reported in the Mirror. Wouldn't put too much faith in it.

    Vorm, Krul
    Bosingwa, Kompany, Enrique, Simpson, Gabbidon
    Nani, Silva, Taarabt, Dyer, Johnson
    RVP, Rooney, Sturridge

£0.2m in bank and Taarabt to Ramsey and RVP back to Aguero GW10.

Lampards a risk. I had him in my team but a lot of folk on here scared me off him by saying he will be rotated. Some would argue Mata being a safer bet, but I am unconvinced if his current points haul is anything to go by. Might want to consider Nani or Young instead to free up funds to beef up your defence a bit.

Is Welbeck out, Suarez in worth a -4 point hit? If Welbeck doesn't play, my substitute could be Simpson, Dyer or Gabbidon.

Just do it next week for free - Hernandez is playing for Mexico v Brazil at 2.30am on Wednesday, and the game is the early kick-off on Saturday, so Welbeck could easily play. He was pulled out of the U-21 squad, which hints that Fergie might want to play him on Saturday.

not sure as to which 3 i'd pick from boyata ward cabaye and gabby..

fielding kompany and gabby would be stupid. would'n wanna start both boyata and ward .

Other way round - Enrique could sneak an assist, de Laet seems to be out of favour but could come on for a 1-pointer.

Not many I'd say, most just want assurance on choices the've already made.

Well I've been trying to get assurances that I should play my Swansea boys, but so far nobody else is showing much confidence in them. At the moment I still have 3 in my 11 though. 😀

I'm playing Taylor ...but I can't decide whether or not to play Ruddy at home or stick with the in form Vorm at Norwich. I'd be putting all my eggs in the Swans basket if I did that.

Well, I've gone Vorm and N.Taylor because I think they are more likely than Norwich to keep a cleansheet, even as the away team.

There's around 800+ teams from looking at the table.

I'm in 90th place, and i think the top 28 or so get promoted at the end of the season

I've been really jammy so far, I won last week with 42. I'd say its a difficult division to get out of.

I'm 6 points off the top and in 243rd with 275 points. There's someone in 14th with the same score as as me, but obviously maximum points. Weird game H2H.
          Long way to go yet.

Shit-loads. Sorry, can't be more specific than that, but in the last write-up I think at least 20 teams had 100% records.

A lot of folk going for RVP this weekend I see. With a good run of fixtures I can see why, although his price tag does seem somewhat lofty for a player who isn't going to be geting the same quality of service without Cesc and Nasri.

    My front line is currently:

    Adebayor Sturridge Rooney

I am tempted to swap Rooney for RVP, but I got him for 12m so it would mean a 0.2m hit which could leave me struggling to swap him back in later.

Should I swap Rooney for RVP

    YES/NO?

      Not for me.

Rooney is a season keeper barring injury/suspension

have u got any other Arsenal coverage?

Keep Rooney. I think he could even outscore RvP this week. Keep an eye on Adebayor's injury though.

Was my line of thinking also. I've got Ramsey, so got some coverage in midfield.

I can see Rooney scoring against lpool and man city, not against everton though. RVP is likely to get more pts over those three weeks...but Arsenal have a nasty habit of not winning easy matches at home.

Agreed, and Stoke in particular will not be as easy as some may think. Cheers
