Man United’s build up to their Champions League clash with Otelul Galati tomorrow evening has produced some revealing comments regarding the future of Rio Ferdinand, with some significance to Fantasy managers.

Ahead of tomorrow’s Old Trafford tie, Sir Alex Ferguson, speaking at a press conference, has indicated that, with Nemanja Vidic his number one choice at centre-back, Ferdinand is now left to battle it out with Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for a slot alongside the Serb.

No longer, it seems, is Ferdinand a guaranteed start for the champions, with his manager stating that the thirty-three year old will now have to modify his game as age catches up with him.

I explained to Rio the other day simply this – we have two young centre-backs coming through and I’m happy to have four and hope I can keep four of them happy for a long time. Rio’s almost 33 and has obviously lost the yard of pace he had five years ago but that doesn’t mean to say he can’t tailor his game into a different game where he doesn’t rely on pace. I did that myself when I lost some sharpness so I tailored my game differently. Rio will do the same and he’ll be fine. He’s still one of the best footballers in the country in terms of his use of the ball. He has a great presence and can still tackle and head the ball.

Ferdinand has taken part in six of United’s league games so far but with Vidic only now returning to fitness following a calf injury, they’ve shown little resilience at the back this season. Vidic’s two games in the past week, however, have seen United record clean sheets, though Ferdinand – perhaps after his display against Man City in the 6-1 mauling – played no part. Jones was preferred for the Carling Cup trip to Aldershot and Evans retained his start at Goodison.

With Vidic suspended tomorrow evening, Ferdinand looks odds-on to return to the heart of the back-four, though whether he’ll keep his place against Sunderland this weekend is perhaps unlikely. An unchanged defence from the Everton game looks to be on the cards.

Long-term, though, Ferdinand’s appearances will perhaps continue to be limited. The adaptability of both Smalling and Jones may work in Ferdinand’s favour to a certain extent, with either player also capable of filling in at right-back. Jones is also able to slot into defensive central midfield, leaving Evans as the only out-and-out centre half of Ferguson’s three younger options.

Smalling’s recent foot injury will sideline him for a month and as of yet this season, Ferguson has not had a full quota of defenders to choose from. With Rafael also now available to return at right-back, Ferdinand could find himself a peripheral figure as his manager looks to re-invigorate the United back-line, with the shockwaves from the City defeat still reverberating around Old Trafford.

For Fantasy managers, Evans is by far the most intriguing option given his rather modest pricing across the Fantasy games. The Irishman has started eight of United’s ten league games so far this season and, at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, has to be considered as a short-term option at the very least.

The return of Vidic was expected to dent Evans’s prospects but the start at Goodison, following his red card against City, was a surprise. Ferdinand was left to look on from the sidelines in that game and will likely find himself in that position again this weekend.

With improved fixtures on the horizon and with the possibility that Ferguson will look to discover a more miserly approach following the City thrashing, Fantasy managers will be keen to examine the options in the United back four. Today’s comments have shed more light on the situation and offered further indication that Evans will remain in the mix.

We’ve seen that Ferguson is more than willing to show faith in Evans and, in the past, the United boss has looked to establish a settled partnership in the league. If Evans can maintain a decent level of performance and United can embark on a run of improved defensive displays, there’s even the possibility that he could perhaps make the position alongside Vidic his own.

Guys, having an absolute stinker of a start to the season (placed 1.5m!).

Have made drastic changes last week at a cost of -16 (I know but I left out silva and vdv for too long).

This is my team now but it still needs tweaking, with Balo my major concern -

    Krull, Vorm
    Bosingwa, Kompany, Warnock, Simpson, Shawcross
    Silva, VDV, Ramsey, Petrov, Dyer
    Rooney, Adebeyor, Balotelli

I’m thinking of ditching Bosingwa for Wilkinson at 4m (double up on Stoke defence) and then ditching Petrov for a 5.4 mid and Balo for Aguero.

    Any advice GREATLY appreciated

not something i did lightly but when you make bad choices early on in the season, drastic measures are needed to get your team back on track. -16 is nothing over the course of the season when bringing in the likes of Silva and VDV

But if you are looking at getting players for the long term, you might as well work them in slowly.

You already have a decent team there and your considering another 8 point hit. I am assuming you've used your wild card too, otherwise you would have used it. In that case, I would stick with your team, or possibly look at the CL fixtures and work out a transfer for Balotelli if he plays tomorrow.

Nothing good can come from -20 points in 2 weeks...

And I strongly disagree that -16 points is nothing over the course of the season. Both players could get injured in a week and then you'll be looking at -16 points for transfering them out again.

If you're team is that bad, then your position isn't really false. In terms of improving from here, you could do with taking Athevroy's advice.

I have Young, Shawcross and Kompany and my team sucks right now. I need to replace one of them this week, before I almost certainly WC during the international break. So, my thoughts are:

Shawcross-->Jones (which would suck, because it's the transfer I just made last week for the purpose of getting VDV in)
Young-->VDV. My intended transfer for this week, but without Shawx and Kompany, my back line will be weak
Young-->Budget midfielder to free up cash for a big gun if I decide not to WC

Just looked at your team - a backline of Enrique Warnock Simpson doesn't look half bad for the GW (all at home) and then Young > VDV looks a good bet. You've then the international break for Shawx to get fit and by which time Kompany will return. Anything else would seem a knee-jerk to Shawx's injury.

Hard to tell actually. Sturridge hasn't actually played all that much football recently.

          Genk - benched
QPR - subbed after 35 minutes
          Everton - benched
Arsenal - subbed after 60 minutes

Given how he's been subbed off against United, Arsenal and Leverkusen - all at times where we needed goals, it's still not safe to say that he's nailed on in the Chelsea team.

Although if you have him in your FPL team, I'd definitely keep until he is actually dropped.

What a perfectly timed article! There I was this morning bemoaning how my planned transfer - Wilkinson for Bosingwa to save £2m - was left in tatters last night by Stoke's injuries and upcoming Europa League game Wilko would now likely have to play in as well as Sunday's game and after a look at the stats on FPL clean sheets it came to me! Jonny bloody Evans!

Save £1.5m for Boswinga and I get a top team's defender and still save a bundle! IMHO he's a lousy player but somehow he's FPL gold with 50% of his starts resulting in cleanies!

So I come home from work and hey presto, Sir Paulos agrees with me (well, sorta)! C'mon SAF, don't play him 2mrrw and I'll hit that transfer button!

Only looking a few weeks ahead in defence. It's not like many teams offer much hope of a cleanie these days no matter what the oddsmakers say... Beside, with UTD having ECL games before this weekend and GW's 13 & 15 as well he may end up FPL rotation proof for a little while if Rio plays in midweek

Opinions needed on WHEN to make my transfers please.
I had planned to take out Suarez and Agbonlawhore next GW for RVP and Studge/Bendybus, however, the recent forms of RVP and Bosingwa has me feeling the urge to get them in/out this week.
    Current team is:
    Given Vorm
    Kompany Enrique Bos Brown Simpson
    Silva Nani VDV Ramsey Dyer
    Suarez Adebeyor Agbonlawhore
    Would you do:
    A: GW 11- Bos & Suarez > Wilkinson & RVP (-4pt), GW12 – Agbonlawhore > Studge/Bendybus
B: All three transfers next week for 4 pt hit
I suppose it boils down to who will score higher this week, Bos and Suarez or wilks and RVP…..and how important is it to get RVP before his price rises again, given that I know I want him next week anyway?
    Thanks in advance.

IMO this game could be improved with better scoring...points are hard to come by, why not give one point for the assist to the assist. This would be more representative of the game of football as a whole. A goal is only scored via good team work, and an the incisive pass could well of been the penultimate assist...

        in a way, I agree.

but then again, simplicity is the beauty and makes the game more accessible.

good players who create alot, will on the whole get more assists. players that get lucky assists by being in the right place at the right time, will tend to have lower figures. it balances out.

In the UCL fantasy game, anyone else always bench the better player when you have to choose between two players - who played on the first night - with equal scores?

Not entirely sure why, but I like to make my final XI as 'bad' as possible, for example by benching Gotze instead of Horvath (both on 2) in the first week.

    Just me?

Well that was a wasted transfer of RVP. Easy game my arsene, who is going to score goals.

So James Rodriguez isn't injured or rested, but has lost his place to Varela in the last couple of matches.

It is interesting though, he's impressed every time I've seen him and seemed to be in decent form (especially in terms of actual output).

Hi guys, this is a really good site.

This is my situation at the moment: I'm doing okay, 491 points so far but I've got a lot of deadweights in my team and I think I need a re-shuffle so I'm planning on using my wildcard. This is the team so far:

    Given (Ruddy)
    Warnock - R. Taylor - Enrique - (Simpson, Wilkinson)
    Nani - Mata - Silva - Jarvis - (K. Henry)
    Ba - Suarez - Rooney

    This is what I'm considering:
    OUT:
Given, Warnock, Nani, Jarvis. (Possibly Rooney)
    IN:
Al Habsi, Brown, VDV, Sessengon. (Possibly Aguero/RVP)

Now as for the strikers, I don't know whether to stick or twist with Rooney. He's playing a lot deeper at the moment so won't be as much threat in front of goal, Cleverley is also injured again so Utd won't create as many chances and he's not in great form. Should I jump on the RVP bandwagon or is it too late? I feel that Aguero would be the best option as I can see him consistently getting goals/assists.

What do you guys think? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. πŸ™‚

rvp must have, henry must not. I am still not convinced on Mata-- maybe Dempsey or walters. good luck, my friend.

oh and vdv is a must, and try to get some man u of some sort on your team, that's a gap all of us are trying to fill or refill, ba is cheap but his opponents toughen up considerably, not saying to replace him but don't expect the same amazing run to continue.

          Thanks for the reply.

The thing with Henry is he's the cheapest around and will always play. He's my 3rd sub and it's highly unlikely that he would ever come on considering the other players I have.

I'm loving Mata tbh. He's Chelsea's best player and their main creative outlet. Can only see him getting better as well as he settles more. The fact that Torres is back from suspension will help him as well I think as they compliment each other well.

Yeah had a look at Ba's fixtures. Think he'll be on a high after yesterday so I'm keeping him for a week and if I go with my proposed transfers I'll have 1.9-1.4m in the bank (depending on whether I get Aguero or RVP) so then I can cash in and get someone like Adebayor (if I can afford him) or maybe Crouchie.

RVP is must-have. Will do better over course of season than Aguero. Karl Henry has to go, i'd also get rid of jarvis and warnock or given. Need either adebayor or vdv, probably vdv, but i think Nani could be a good differential, and i'd be tempted to give mata more time.

Thanks for the reply. What really stands out for me about Aguero is his ridiculous consistency. Only got under 5 points in 2 games he's played and one of those he went off injured early on. City are going to score more goals than Arsenal and Aguero has been at the heart at the high majority of the goals they've scored so far. He will get goals/assists consistently. What also is an incentive is that Aguero is a fair bit cheaper than RVP

I'm wary that I've missed out the best of van Persie's run. Walcott and Gervinho are very hit and miss and that'll affect how many chances RVP gets a lot. It's a tough one.
