Another game, another appearance in the centre of midfield for Wayne Rooney. Roberto Mancini is confident on David Silva’s fitness ahead of the game at QPR, while Steven Gerrard is making steady progress from an infected ankle problem:

Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for Wayne Rooney after another game in central midfield for the United forward in last night’s Champions League win over Otelul Galati. Fergie admitted injuries to others played a part in his thinking, though went on to say Rooney is more than capable of excelling in the role:

I think he was our best player. He showed great awareness of that role. His selection of passes at times was very good and showed great energy and determination – we got a really good performance out of him tonight. We had injuries and that is one of the reasons we played him there. Cleverley is injured, Carrick is injured, Darren Fletcher played on Saturday but it was better he played next Saturday. It was an option for us and a good option because he has all the qualities you need to be a central midfield player.

Rooney had no qualms about playing in a deeper role, revealing after the game:

I played a lot there when I was younger. You get a lot of the ball but we had to defend at times. If the manager asks me to do it, I will do it. It’s up to him.

United’s options up front were diminished last night after Michael Owen limped off after just eleven minutes. Fergie revealed post-match that Owen suffered a thigh injury but reckons it’s too early to put a timescale on any length of absence.

The sight of David Silva limping out of Man City’s Champions League tie at Villarreal would have worried his Fantasy owners no end last night. While City have yet to comment on the issue today, Roberto Mancini was a little reassuring after the game:

I don’t think this is serious. He took a knock on his back. Also we play again in 60 hours against QPR. I think he can recover well.

Kenny Dalglish has today revealed Steven Gerrard is responding well to treatment on his infected ankle. The Reds skipper missed last weekend’s win at West Brom and is also out of this weekend’s home clash with Swansea, while Jamie Carragher faces a late fitness test ahead of the game with Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Since they found the infection, Steven has really been progressing extremely well. Everything is positive for him. They found the infection and I suppose it’s a wee bit like flu – you know you’ve got it, but you don’t know where it came from. But they are treating and it is responding really well, so it’s positive for him. It is nothing more sinister.

Gabriel Obertan faces a spell on the sidelines after picking up a toe infection. The Newcastle winger has been an almost ever-present in his side’s unbeaten start to the season but reports suggest he could be out for up to a month with the problem. Sylvain Marveaux seems the favourite to replace him- at 4.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) he offers good value at a cut-price rate but has tough run of fixtures on the horizon.

Chelsea received a boost today ahead of their weekend trip to Blackburn. Rovers centre-half Scott Dann has been ruled out of the Ewood Park clash, having failed to recover from a calf problem, though is expected to return after the international break. Michel Salgado, Ryan Nelsen and Vince Grella are also unavailable.

Momo Diame may be in line for a surprise return to the Wigan fold for the trip to Wolves. The midfielder was taken off early in last weekend’s home loss to Fulham after a couple of hefty challenges and Roberto Martinez had feared the worst but he’s responded to treatment and could play a part at Molineux, according to reports.

Alex McLeish admitted that Barry Bannan is feeling the pressure after off-field issues forced the club to suspend the young Scot a fortnight ago. Bannan is now available for selection ahead of this week’s clash with Norwich but Big Eck conceded :

He’s back in the fold but you can’t expect somebody to come in singing and dancing and laughing as if nothing’s happened. He’s feeling it a bit and he wouldn’t be human if he wasn’t. But he’s back in and the lads I’m sure will be as friendly and hospitable to Barry as they normally are.

Andrei Arshavin was refreshingly frank with the admission that his performances since joining Arsenal have been less than impressive. The Russian’s frustrating displays have made him a bit-part player at the Emirates, with the likes of Gervinho establishing himself ahead of Arshavin in the pecking order:

Speaking honestly, I think my performances for Arsenal have been average. I’ve done some good things, but I don’t assess my game on goals or assists. I look at the whole picture. Normally when I’m on the pitch I take control of the game but I haven’t really done that here. I’m an extra tool in the team rather than the main one, so it’s been difficult.

Reports suggest both David Vaughan and Seb Larsson have suffered groin problems ahead of the trip to Man United, though both are expected to be fit for the Old Trafford clash. Steve Bruce confirmed Simon Mignolet is expected to be out for a couple of months, while John O’Shea is out for two to three weeks.

That was four very ordinary games played in CL this week. At least MC livened things up with some goals, but it's an increasingly dull competition in my opinion. League wins hands down every time.

Euro Super League? Not a hope in hell.

Yes. In fairness, MC are in the only group worth watching. But football saturation does more harm in the long-run. I wish clubs would stop being greedy and accept a slimmed down comp in Europe, both Europa and CL.

It's got a bit silly that teams are resting players in CL. Would think that they should always have opponents who mean they need to play their best team.

Since they rejigged the qualifying so that the winners of the league in each country automatically qualify, the group stages have got much easier. In 1999, Utd had Barca and Bayern in our CL group...

City were always going to have a tough group, not being one of the top 2 seeds.

Ok people need some help. . i took an 8 point hit for this team
    Hart (krul)
Shawcross, Dunne, Enrique, R Taylor (kompany)
    Walters, Ramires, VDV, Silva (Grella)
    RVP, Suarez (lita)

Kompany on the bench cause of suspension and just heard on ssn that shawcross is definetly out. Should i take a 12 point hit to transfer out shawcross or am i crazy?? Im coming 2,257 overall and winning all my mini leagues so if i do it could have terrible consequences 🙁 opinions please? 🙂

Thats a tough one Alex, with all three bench players unlikely to play (Kompany definitely out) i'd say you'll play a donut unless you take a 4-pointer ... but it's a gamble, no doubt. Bring in a defender and have them concede and you lose 2 points (at least). If it were me, and you have the $ then upgrade Grella to Ramsey, or Lita to Ba?

Do you have a wildcard to use.

      My thoughts if you do.

I would use that and downgrade Defenders and upgrade lita and grella.

      Wilko for Shawcross

      Assou- Ekotto for Dunne

And upgrade lita and grella to servicible players.

If you haven't already I'd suggest using your wildcard actually. Here are my reasons:

      - You have already made a 8 point hit and using it will cancel the hit out.

      - You have spent far too much money on keepers leading to you having a crappy forward (Lita) and a crappy midfielder (Grella). Hart is a waste of money and you could get Howard for Everton for less with great fixtures or Westwood for Sunderland who rotates well with Krul. Alternatively swap Krul for a cheaper keeper if you're going to stick with an expensive keeper as it's a waste of money.

      - Grella and Lita are wasting money and spaces in your squad - change them!

      - Dunne has rubbish fixtures coming up and there's much better value elsewhere.

I assume your new so I would recommend checking the short-list and the season ticker on the homepage to help give you some ideas. I like your attack apart from your bench players though.

Unless you have money in the bank to upgrade Grella/Lita, don't take any more hits - you could do more damage with the hits instead of actually giving yourself more points in the long-run.

If I were you I'd look at building a squad with a bit more flexability up front and less money at the back. Clean sheets are hard to come by at the moment as most games seems to be goal crazy.

          In my opinion the following transfers would be a good idea over the next couple of weeks, in the order given;

          -Hart>Westwood to free up funds
-Dunne>cheap defender (definitely under 5m) to free up more funds

That way you can look at some decent attacking players for Grella/Lita

Have a look on the homepage, there's a table showing all of the teams' fixtures.

Westwood has great fixtures short-term but more importantly he rotates well with Krul (check Sun/New fixtures) as when Sunderland play at home, Newcastle play away and vice-versa.

haha...you'd think it was expensive, but I've had my team since the beginning of the year (did a no-clones league "draft"). The rest of my team is:

        Mids - C. Adam / Demps / VdV / Mata / Eagles
        Forwards - RvP / Sturridge / Adebayor

With that being said, I feel like I have to play a 3-4-3 (sitting Eagles of course), so i'll start Enrique, Joleon, and WHO ELSE? Thx for the feedback, gentleman...

He's been good for starts in the past but that was before Wilson started playing left back and before Huth was forced to right-back by the signing of Upson and Woodgate.

Short-term he has a chance to start most games due to injuries. He could establish himself in the side mid-long term but with Europa League and returning players I doubt it very much.

You can't go wrong for a couple of weeks for 4m though!

United are a real headache atm. I have Rooney, but am considering getting rid, either for Hernandez/Suarez or someone along those lines, or for Wellbeck/another cheaper option. Depending on how much I have left I'll get rid of Martin Petrov, for someone in the 6.5 range or maybe for Nani...but even he doesn't seem sure of starting atm.

How do people think United will line up at the weekend?

he can't keep playing Rooney in mf, especially not at home against teams like Sunderland.

There was some good analysis here in Ireland on RTE last night, looking at Rooney's performance. They were'nt as cheery about the way he's playing there as Fergie or the english media seems to have been....he did seem to waste a lot of passes

is there a reason you are thinking of investing a little more cash in doing Kompany to Lescott? Briggs to Wilks certainly looks reasonable and despite all the squawking here I think Wilks will be on the field quite regularly.

With Kompany being banned for 1 game, i'd like to take a punt on a Man.City clean sheet vs QPR. Lescott really for some attacking potential.
I know he's only out for 1 game, but just fancy a City defender.
I guess Wilks would be good as it would give me more cover on my bench, but i need points this weekend!!

MF too strong as you can only play 5...I'd lose Drenthe and get in Allen or some other sub 5m mf.
      I'd then upgrade Graham

i really want to be playing Jones and Evans will be benched and will come on as first sub for Jones should he not play - this is my way of sort of guaranteeing united defensive coverage should this whole focus on clean sheets pans out well. Plan is to play 3-5-2 and hence Graham...who else would i upgrade Graham for?
