Sir Alex Ferguson dismisses any notions of a long-term midfield role for Wayne Rooney. Arsene Wenger reveals his centre-back dilemma, while Spurs’ injury worries lessen as William Gallas and Steven Pienaar both make first-team returns:

The words of Sir Alex Ferguson offered some reassurance to Fantasy owners yesterday. While he’s been impressed with Wayne Rooney’s central midfield displays over the last two games, the United boss feels Rooney is still his first-choice forward and admitted his decision to drop the player into a deeper role has been enforced, due to injuries to others:

Wayne has scored 11 goals so far, so you want him to be in positions where he can get you more goals. I think that position is where he will normally play. But he disciplined himself against Galati and didn’t belt off forward all the time. He held his position quite well and played as a natural centre midfield player. He has the appetite for it, he’s got the energy levels for it and I thought his awareness of people around him was really good. I thought he did well, but I’m not putting any marker down for that position because it really depends on what is available elsewhere.

Peter Odemwingie is a doubt for West Brom’s trip to Arsenal this week. With Shane Long already sidelined, Roy Hodgson’s forward options are limited right now and Odemwingie has been unable to train since Tuesday since suffering a blow to the knee in training. Paul Scharner is definitely out of the Emirates showdown with a knee problem picked up last weekend at home to Liverpool.

Arsene Wenger admits achieving a balance to his centre-back pairing is crucial ahead of the Baggies game. With Thomas Vermaelen now available and Carl Jenkinson returning to right-back, the Gunners boss has five centre-halves to choose from, giving him a selection headache.

The balance is vital. Koscielny and Vermaelen can play together and Mertesacker can play with Vermaelen and Koscielny. It gives us a bit of an opportunity to rotate a bit when needed and people are tired. Ideally, Vermaelen will play on the left (of the centre-back pair) but Koscielny can play on the left as well so we have a good potential and balance there. I think that all the three can play at any moment, and we still have Djourou and Squillaci as well.

Wenger revealed both Kieran Gibbs and Marouane Chamakh are out of tomorrow’s match. Gibbs’s recovery is slower than anticipated and he may be available after the upcoming two week international break.

David Vaughan is still an injury doubt for Sunderland ahead of the trip to Old Trafford. The midfielder picked up a groin strain in training midweek and could be replaced by Lee Cattermole if he fails to make it.

Reports suggest Patrice Evra may be omitted from the Man United side for personal reasons. The left-back missed United’s Champions League side in midweek following the death of a family member and has already been left out of the France squad for the same reason. This could see Fabio come into the reckoning for the match against Sunderland- he completed ninety minutes in the game against Otelul Galati in Evra’s absence.

Steven Pienaar and William Gallas both returned to the first-team fold last night in Spurs Europa League game with Ruben Kazan. Although Harry Redknapp failed to travel after an operation, the team was his selection, with the likes of Jermain Defoe also handed a start up front as Spurs unbeaten record came to an end.

Martin Jol named a strong lineup for Fulham’s home Europa League game with Wisla Krakow. Damien Duff, in for the suspended Moussa Dembele, celebrated a rare start by firing the Cottagers ahead against the Polish side. Andy Johnson continued his goalscoring exploits on the continent with a brace, as Jol’s side avenged the 1-0 loss to the same opponents a fortnight ago.

Ryan Shawcross and Marc Wilson missed out for Stoke in their 2-1 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv last night. Danny Higginbotham returned to action for the first time in seven months and slotted in at centre-half alongside Matthew Upson. Tony Pulis made nine changes from the side that lost to Newcastle on Monday night, with the likes of Matt Etherington and Jermaine Pennant dropping out ahead of a trip to Bolton.

    Side for GW11 is
    Given (Mignolet)
    Shawcross, Bos, Simpson (Kompany, Taylor)
    Silva, Ramsey, VDV, Sinclair (Moses)
    RVP (c), Ade, Sturridge

Not played WC yet but wondering on fitness of Shawcross and Silva, as taylor and Moses are god awful subs to come in....have £2.2m to spend and would take a hit...thinking of Jones (Utd) or Drenthe in for either...?

Hey all. Off topic I know but I need your advice. I'm still going strong in Paddy Powers €5000 Last Man Standing (pick a winning team each week, each team can only be chosen once) after 11 weeks. There are 119 of us left out of 9285 entrants.
Thanks to all who told me to go for Swansea over Norwich last week. It worked so well I’m going to ask you all for help again.

Who do you like from Newcastle (vs Eve), Wolves (vs Wig) or Bolton (vs Stoke)? First to 5 should do it.

Rooney should be kept, if any managers have him. Shipping him out due to playing one Premier League match in midfield is ridiculous. And with the International break coming up, RVP being an injury prone player, can quite simply pick up an injury and be back in the infirmary in a jiffy; which would bring regret for a lot of FPL managers.

I'm kind hoping Brunt to step up in the trip to Emirates, as Arsenal seems to be handicapped when dealing with Set Pieces, and as Brunt takes most of the Set Piece kicks, he'll turn out to be a good fantasy choice in the coming Game Week.

Does anyone feel different about it, please do opinionate yourself here; I'd like to hear the arguments; cause that'll help me make better fantasy choices....

Fair points, Its not just based on one premier league match. Ferguson has said he will continue to play him there while his midfield is in the sh!tter. Which will almost definitely be this weekend at the very least.

RVP could get injured, thats what ive been saying for weeks, and for months last season... until i got him in.... and then he got injured!!

I have made the wrong transfers or failed to make transfers for a few weeks in a row and I need points. At the moment RVP is raking them in. So I need him.

Ya, Ronney's gonna play in midfield this week too...
But there's a hunch, that he'll crack a goal, cause he just missed scoring the first goal in Everton's match. It barely passed over his head to Hernandez's foot.

Ya, RVP's the best bet in raking points...

Hoping that you score a 100 points... Good luck to you...

    Kompany, Enrique, Naylor, Wilkinson, Simpson

    Silva, VDV, Nani, Tiote, Dyer

    My team is:

    Given Vorm
    Kompany Bosingwa Enrique Simpson Brown
    VDV Nasri Walters Brunt Dyer
    RVP Suarez Ade

Thinking of wildcarding after this week to redistribute cash from defence to attack - get rid of Bos and Kompany for cheapies, get Silva in for Nasri, Aguero in for Ade, maybe upgrade Brunt. Sound like a good idea? There just doesn't seem to be any value at all in defenders so thinking I'll go all out attack until the Jan wildcard.

I don't like the sound of the above ... your team is good, stick with it ... why get rid of Kompany before Newcastle at home? Adebayor will come good - keep the faith.

2 transfers max with the above team ... Bosingwa --> Jones would be pretty strong ...

Cheers. I feel like I'm overexposed to Spurs though with VDV and Ade, would rather get some Chelsea cover with Sturridge.

Nasri isn't enough City cover I don't think, need Silva or Kun or both.

Kompany will do great for a defender over the season, but I'm starting to think the cash is better spent up top. I can always switch back to decent defenders if they sort themselves out by January.

Thing is Suarez has some tricky fixtures coming up soon, so I want to swap him out for Aguero too. So thats 3 transfers I really have to make next week (I've already done the Rooney - RVP switch this week). Plus my team value could do with some work and a wildcard could get me maybe 0.5 or so hopefully.

      Same question!

But am going for Javier at the moment, simply because I fancy United at home vs Sunderland, and Hernandez should still play, considering:-

      - Hardly any game time in last CL fixture
      - Should play over Welbeck by default
      - Good consistency, home and away
      - 2M cheaper!

I reckon Hernandez is a good shout. People aren't going for him because he hasn't scored too many this year, but he will start scoring and then everyone will be running after him. I don't think he's such a rotation risk. Especially with Rooney in midfield.

Bit of research as the boss is out 🙂

Man United vs Sunderland at OT:

    2008-09 - 1-0 Vidic
    2009-10 - 2-2 Berbatov, A.Ferdinand own goal
    2010-11 - 2-0 Berbatov, A.Ferdinand own goal

Couple lessons to be learnt from this I guess:

    1. Don't play Anton Ferdinand if you have him, his brother buys him out each game.
    2. Not high scoring games.
    3. Rooney and Nani have only picked up 1 assist each in these 3 games.

I know you can't just rely on stats, that's obvious, but probably not the best fixture for me to captain Rooney...or Nani for that matter.

I don't think he'll be a regular starter once all Stoke's defensive injuries clear up. That's why I didn't go for him myself. For the next game or two, he might be OK though. I just don't like wasting my FTs on faffing around and changing my cheapie defenders, so got Barnett as a more long-term solution to the De Laet problem.

I just swapped him for another Norwich player, in Barnett. I know Norwich don't keep clean sheets but he seems to have some attacking potential and I like all my defenders to have a goal or an assist in them, especially when clean sheets have been hard to come by this season. Seeing as he's 0.1M out for you, this is no help at all 😉

McAuley and Wilkinson are the best bets for a 4.0 defender

Heco87, Spurs last two results at Craven Cottage are 0-0 (2009/10) and getting bashed 4-0 last season. We always find Fulham a tough nut to crack and would expect a tight game, with both teams likely to score.

I would swerve to Pilks myself, but then I'm biased.

he is preferred to rio in the league at the minute....but that can change swiftly. Jones for that little bit more offers more security. He can play RB (competes with Smalling- inj, Rafael - not match fit yet)
he can play CB (competes with Evans and rio) he can play def mid ....which is always possible since there are doubts over other mids. Jones is also far more attacking....much more possibility of an assist. Evans can be handy at set pieces and has scored the odd goal, but jones offers better security and goal threat.

Steven Pienaar and William Gallas both returned to the first-team fold last night in Spurs Europa League game with Ruben Kazan.

Gallas also came off apparently injured halfway through the second half. Couldn't tell what was wrong, but he just sat down in defence when the ball went out and waited to be replaced. He then appeared to walk off untroubled.
No reports of it, so maybe he was just tired, but with this doubt, Dawson (achilles) and Corluka (foot) still out and Ledley's dodgy knees, the Spurs defence is still just one more injury from disaster.
