Sir Alex Ferguson dismisses any notions of a long-term midfield role for Wayne Rooney. Arsene Wenger reveals his centre-back dilemma, while Spurs’ injury worries lessen as William Gallas and Steven Pienaar both make first-team returns:

The words of Sir Alex Ferguson offered some reassurance to Fantasy owners yesterday. While he’s been impressed with Wayne Rooney’s central midfield displays over the last two games, the United boss feels Rooney is still his first-choice forward and admitted his decision to drop the player into a deeper role has been enforced, due to injuries to others:

Wayne has scored 11 goals so far, so you want him to be in positions where he can get you more goals. I think that position is where he will normally play. But he disciplined himself against Galati and didn’t belt off forward all the time. He held his position quite well and played as a natural centre midfield player. He has the appetite for it, he’s got the energy levels for it and I thought his awareness of people around him was really good. I thought he did well, but I’m not putting any marker down for that position because it really depends on what is available elsewhere.

Peter Odemwingie is a doubt for West Brom’s trip to Arsenal this week. With Shane Long already sidelined, Roy Hodgson’s forward options are limited right now and Odemwingie has been unable to train since Tuesday since suffering a blow to the knee in training. Paul Scharner is definitely out of the Emirates showdown with a knee problem picked up last weekend at home to Liverpool.

Arsene Wenger admits achieving a balance to his centre-back pairing is crucial ahead of the Baggies game. With Thomas Vermaelen now available and Carl Jenkinson returning to right-back, the Gunners boss has five centre-halves to choose from, giving him a selection headache.

The balance is vital. Koscielny and Vermaelen can play together and Mertesacker can play with Vermaelen and Koscielny. It gives us a bit of an opportunity to rotate a bit when needed and people are tired. Ideally, Vermaelen will play on the left (of the centre-back pair) but Koscielny can play on the left as well so we have a good potential and balance there. I think that all the three can play at any moment, and we still have Djourou and Squillaci as well.

Wenger revealed both Kieran Gibbs and Marouane Chamakh are out of tomorrow’s match. Gibbs’s recovery is slower than anticipated and he may be available after the upcoming two week international break.

David Vaughan is still an injury doubt for Sunderland ahead of the trip to Old Trafford. The midfielder picked up a groin strain in training midweek and could be replaced by Lee Cattermole if he fails to make it.

Reports suggest Patrice Evra may be omitted from the Man United side for personal reasons. The left-back missed United’s Champions League side in midweek following the death of a family member and has already been left out of the France squad for the same reason. This could see Fabio come into the reckoning for the match against Sunderland- he completed ninety minutes in the game against Otelul Galati in Evra’s absence.

Steven Pienaar and William Gallas both returned to the first-team fold last night in Spurs Europa League game with Ruben Kazan. Although Harry Redknapp failed to travel after an operation, the team was his selection, with the likes of Jermain Defoe also handed a start up front as Spurs unbeaten record came to an end.

Martin Jol named a strong lineup for Fulham’s home Europa League game with Wisla Krakow. Damien Duff, in for the suspended Moussa Dembele, celebrated a rare start by firing the Cottagers ahead against the Polish side. Andy Johnson continued his goalscoring exploits on the continent with a brace, as Jol’s side avenged the 1-0 loss to the same opponents a fortnight ago.

Ryan Shawcross and Marc Wilson missed out for Stoke in their 2-1 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv last night. Danny Higginbotham returned to action for the first time in seven months and slotted in at centre-half alongside Matthew Upson. Tony Pulis made nine changes from the side that lost to Newcastle on Monday night, with the likes of Matt Etherington and Jermaine Pennant dropping out ahead of a trip to Bolton.

Excellent, finally managed to get out of lectures to talk about what's been occupying my mind throughout them..... KOLAROV!

We're expecting significant changes from the side that played Villareal only a couple of days ago, right? Especially after everything Mancini has said about his players not being able to play two games in three days etc. So one of those changes will likely be Clichy > Kolarov, no?

Then next week, City have a crucial (and difficult, unlike the Villareal game) match away at Napoli on the Tuesday evening. Given how the pace and movement of Napoli's attacking players caused City problems - especially on the counter attack - in the home fixture, you'd have thought that Clichy would be preferred to Kolarov there, being the quicker of the two and the more able defensively.

With Evra out of the France squad for their international games, Clichy will presumably play at LB... The only concern is that Kolarov also has two international games over the course of the next two weeks, before in South America, with the latter being in Honduras on the 14th - the Newcastle (H) game is on the 19th.

Would be a pretty flair two week punt (maybe even longer as the next time you'd want to play Kolarov is at home to Norwich, and City have Bayern in the week after that). Seriously tempted.

        Yeah.... no, he didn't.

Up until now, no left back has played in Europe and then at weekend in the PL. Mancini has swapped them every time.

What do you guys think it will be the score in Newcastle vs Everton?
My main concern is that Drenthe and Baines do a great game and their price sky rockets...in a international brake prices could rise 0.2 to 0.4...

0.4 happened like once ever. And that was when Dzeko scored four goals ahead of an international break.

Do not make decisions based on prices and predictions of how they will change. Focus on the points.

I wish that would happen but until you are a front page darling you're unlikely to see big investment. Even if Baines and Drenthe tear it up this weekend they'll still be some distance off the top of their respective fields (Defenders and Midfielders).

What's peoples plans with Suarez after this weekend? I'm considering downgrading him to Bendtner even though i already have Sturridge as a mid-price forward to allow me to upgrade one of Moses or Dyer to Drenthe.

Aside from that the only possibility i can think of is to swap him for Adebayor. Either way i'm gonna have to take a hit next week if i'm going to be swapping Bosingwa for Jones this week.

I'm in the same boat, stupidly transferred Balotelli in for Suarez last week. Strongly considering getting suarez back in again despite upcoming fixtures

Way I see it is you have:
      1. Aguero - may get a shedload of points, but still a rotation risk and upcoming fixtures arent fantastic.
      2. Hernandez - great fixtures, plays at the front, form questionable.
      3. Suarez - great fixture this week only then 2 poor fixtures.
      4. Not much else - Gervinho, Sturridge, Agbonlahor stick out ..

    Sivasspor vs. Fenerbahce

So far this season Fenerbache have actually been better away from home than at home. They also boast a good record against Silvasspor winning 4 of the last 5 meetings. Silvasspor are mid table and have only taken points off the weaker opponents and struggled against the big teams, Kayseri beat them 6-2 and Eksisehirspor beat them 4-0 at home. I would be shocked by any other result thhan Fenerbahce win here.

Anyone else looking seriously at getting Baines in after the break?

Run of fixtures looks tremendous. Hope his price falls a bit more, but I'd be okay getting him in at 7.8. Will have to downgrade a midfielder, but having Baines is essentially having another solid midfielder, and if he doesn't perform over the next 10-12 weeks, then he's not going to perform this season.

Hello friends and foes. My team for this week:

    Given (NOR)
Saylor (EVE) | Enrique (SWA) | Bosingwa (bla)
Sinclair (liv) | Jarvis (WIG) | Silva (qpr) | Van Der Vaart (ful)
RVP(c) (WBA) | Suarez (SWA) | Adebayor (ful)

Bench: Ruddy (avl) | Moses (wol) | Olsson (ars) | Brown (mun)

    3 QUESTIONS
    1. Do you agree with my lineup and subs?
    2. Seeing as I am Wild-Carding after this week I have one free transfer that I feel like I have to use. It will be a one week punt so where would you use it?
    3. Do you think my decision to WC after this gameweek is incorrect?

        Thanks Fratboy.

The main driving force behind the WC would be to get on United for their glorious fixtures but there really is nobody ripe for investment in that team right now. It's really ballsed up my plans.

I'd say you have a prety strong team there. I wouldn't WC personally unless you really feel like you need to change at least half your squad.

In terms of transfers this week, I'm pretty sure i'm going to take out Bosingwa for Jones. Reports in the papers suggest he will be dropped and Fergie always murders Steve Bruce sides.

Other than that, Dzeko in for Ade maybe as a punt? Craven Cottage a tricky place to visit although they did play yesterday.

Bos > Jones is very popular innit? It also feels a little too safe for what will be the biggest luxury transfer of my season.

You could do Bosingwa to Jones this week to cover utd's great fixtures, but you could also get away with saving a transfer easily.

      1) yes I do

      2) My one week punt is Sinclair -> Park tomorrow morning when Sinclair goes up. He's not in my WC plans.

      3) I do not as I am also wildcarding an my team is very similar to yours

IT, nice team. Line-up looks spot on to me, and I would transfer out Bosy for MU Def, perhaps Jones, or maybe double up LIV.

As for WC, if you're relatively happy with the line-up for the next 6-8 weeks, don't use it. With your team I probably wouldn't unless you get a few Intl injuries.

That's what I think, for what it's worth.

      2. I'd do Brown or Olsson to Evans perhaps, though that doesn't generate a huge improvement over playing Bos.

I'm in similiar situation as you, don't really NEED to wc, but want to make my team better for coming weeks. You prob too want to get rid of given, saylor, jarvis, bos, suarez, moses...that's enough reason for me.

In january again wc and we have good team value when possible doublegameweeks start in feb-april.
Besides I'm not sure it's any better plan to wc in dgw's and be stuck with some players you don't really want after that.

      Aaaand the aswers are
      1. yes

Apologies if already mentioned ... not sure where BBC have got their team news from but looks good to me:

TEAM NEWSArsenal striker Robin van Persie will return to the starting line-up after beginning on the bench in midweek.

Laurent Koscielny may also reclaim his place after being rested against Marseille, but Kieran Gibbs and Marouane Chamakh remain sidelined.

West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie is a doubt after hurting his knee in training this week.

Paul Scharner suffered knee ligament damage against Liverpool last Saturday and is ruled out.

Yes, you only get a one match ban for a professional foul (tugging someone back when one v one, hand ball off the line etc). you get 3 games for serious foul play : ) ie a tackle that Cattermole would make lol

    Good Afternoon,

Wildcarded last week only to find Kompany out, Shawcross and Silva doubts and Rooney playing in midfield.

Do I need to address any of these as I'd like to save my transfer for two during the international break.

    Krul (Vorm)
    Enrique Simpson Shawcross (Barnett Kompany)
VDV Walters Sinclair Silva (B Johnson)
    Rooney Sturridge RVP (c)

    0.3m in the bank.

If Shawcross and Silva don't make it I have the two Norwich boys to come in away at VIlla. Not completely disastrous but I can't foresee more than 4 points between them there.

Thinking Shawcross to Evans but not certian he'll start so could be a waste.

Not keen on getting rid of Rooney with the fixtures Man United have coming up but bought him at 12.0 so not losing out on any pennies really.

Looks good. Wouldn't you prefer to get De Laet out instead of Bosingwa?

Yeah he's going for Wilkinson as soon as I get chance.
Bosingwa to Evans leaves me with enough to do Suarez to Hernandez next week. If he looks like starting anyway.

    Halo People

Why to get rid of Nani? He will play Sunderland at OT and very likely to produce something.. 😮

Btw, has it been mentioned by Mancini to Balotelli or Dzeko? Is it worth to trade Ade to one of City?

It will be Aguero plus one of those two I expect. Balotelli started midweek and Dzeko was rested, so it could be Dzeko but I would be wary of bringing either of them in due to the Mancini lottery.

If I had Nani, I would be patient with him over the next few weeks.
As for Balotelli, I have him in my team for the QPR game (have had him over the last 2 weeks), allthough I wasn't too pleased to see him play mid week. It seems like it will be Dzeko and Aguero, which then leaves me with the hope that Balo will come on 60-70min and score a couple anyway (which he is capable of doing).

    Given (Vorm)

    Enrique Simpson Bosingwa (Kompany) (Boyata)

    Silva VdV Ramsey Eagles (Dyer)

    RvP Suarez Adebayor

What transfers if any? Thinking of Jones > Bosingwa/Kompany

Also, looking more long term, Drenthe or Sessegnon?

    Cheers in advance.

Keep Kompany, ditch Bosy for Jones. Drenthe move is very popular, but I'll see how he does next couple of weeks before selecting him. I have a suspicion that big Fulham payday is a one-off.

The thing about Drenthe is that he's been doing well in the minutes he's had.

Fulham was his first 90 minute game.

I'll be watching how he does this weekend though as he's in my mind for GW12.

I'd probably stick. I brought in Jones but he was for DeLaet so more of a no brainer.

It would help us if he can't play, Henry, but I think he'll start and rip us to pieces.
