The leader of the pack delivers for Wolves. Bolton tear into a leg-weary Stoke to avenge an FA Cup humiliation and Robin Van Persie takes a hit, as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are given every reason to dislike Mondays…

The Player

We’ve waited for Jamie O’Hara to deliver. For weeks we’ve had him bubbling under as a Scout Pick’s consideration, pondering when his contribution to the Wolves effort will translate into Fantasy returns. We suspected it would come as soon as Mick McCarthy’s side could turn the corner and earn their first win since gameweek two. Almost inevitably, lowly Wigan were on the receiving end of a Wolves revival with O’Hara the protagonist in a 3-1 win.

A 15-point FPL haul was signposted. Our Members can see for themselves how O’Hara matches up to some of the leading Fantasy targets this season – how his creativity and threat are integral to Wolves’ chances of saving their Premier League status.

With an FPL valuation of 5.7, O’Hara’s goal and two assists seems likely to rouse interest. Right now, however, investment in O’Hara is being dwarfed by the interest shown in this weekend’s other midfield revelations – Bolton’s Chris Eagles and Norwich’s Anthony Pilkington. Both are cheaper than the Wolves man and have also shown greater consistency when it comes to returns this season.

It’s difficult to make a case for O’Hara then, although we’re pretty certain that if McCarthy can get the Wolves ship on steady waters, O’Hara will be back amongst the points on a regular basis.

The Team

Having slipped to eight defeats in nine league games, Bolton unleashed a goal frenzy on a weary Stoke City at the Reebok. Owen Coyle’s men were relentless, led by the attacking verve of reborn Chris Eagles and the recalled Ivan Klasnic.

The Croatian had a point to prove having dropped down the pecking order following his foolish red card in the gameweek five defeat to Norwich. Since then David Ngog has emerged as a contender up front, while Coyle has dropped Kevin Davies to the bench as he juggled his formation and tactics. Klasnic was back in the lineup against Stoke however, with Kevin Davies alongside him. The Potters, suffering a Europa League hangover once again, had no answer to Bolton’s desire to banish the demons of last season’s humiliating FA Cup semi-final defeat.

The emergence of Chris Eagles is of particular interest to Fantasy managers. The winger has become a major component in Coyle’s plans and, having completed 90 minutes in the last four league games, appears to have surpassed Martin Petrov as a reliable creative force, with a heightened goal threat thrown in.

Three goals and four assists is a healthy return for a midfielder priced at just 5.3 in the FPL game. While Petrov languished on the bench, Eagles seized the opportunity to take centre stage. It’s hard to say how long his flame will burn, but with Bolton entering a run of favourable enough fixtures, short-term investment seems sound.

The Talking Point

Monday morning brought a chain of events that boiled the frustration of many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers. Having delivered another huge points haul in the 3-0 win over West Brom, Robin Van Persie lost the assist awarded for Thomas Vermaelen’s goal and dropped in the EA PPI rankings, denying him a single bonus point. Those who captained Van Persie suffered an 8-point drop in their total – green arrows suddenly turned into red – I speak from experience.

It’s hard to pin down the real issues at play here. Is it frustration with the criteria used to judge an assist? The fact that a touch from Gervinho would be enough to cancel out the cross from Van Persie which eventually found it’s way to Vermaelen’s boot?

Perhaps it’s more the process of the points being removed, the fact that it took forty-eight hours for the points awarded on Saturday, to be stripped on Monday morning.

The fact is, Gervinho touched Van Persie’s cross. That was not only the judgement of the Press Association after Monday’s review. It was also the call made by Opta who also awarded a “Goal Assist” to the Ivorian on Saturday night.

Like it or not, then, no Fantasy game in the land gave the assist to Van Persie – it’s not included in the Sky game, it’s not included in the Fantasy League and, while the Telegraph give Van Persie a “Key Contribution”, they also award the same to Gervinho – recognising that he got a touch on the Dutchman’s cross.

We had the Van Persie assist for forty-eight hours but it was never ours to have. We can argue it – re-examine footage but where do we draw the line with such disputes?

When two data providers, charged with supplying correct and accurate data for statistical purposes both say Gervinho touched it, it’s clear we’re fighting a losing battle. The same could be said of Gareth Bale’s “goal” at Fulham – the Press Association don’t stand alone here either – Bale’s goal has been awarded by Opta and all the major Fantasy Games. At what point do we have to shut up and put up?

It also seems unlikely that the new definition of an assist within the FPL ruleset is to blame in the Van Persie’s case. There were examples last season, when this definition wasn’t around, where the slightest of touches took an assist from the supplier of a cross. If an attacking player gets a touch on a cross, a flicked header for example – they gain the assist if a goal is then resultantly scored, not the cross provider. We should be used to this by now.

Van Persie’s cross was intended for Gervinho – the Ivorian fluffed his lines, missed the cross but appeared to divert the ball with his back leg after swinging with the right. A bungled, unintentional intervention but, in terms of the significance of the touch, just how far apart is this from a flick off a player’s hairline on the near post? For all the frustration, once we accept that Gervinho touched the ball, it’s hard to argue against the assist going his way.

Unless of course we push for the whole definition of an assist to be changed. Perhaps such a touch from Gervinho shouldn’t be rewarded? After all, he never intended for the ball to end up Vermaelen’s path when he swung his leg.

Interestingly, Opta have two definitions for an assist; a “goal assist” -which Gervinho earned- and an “intentional assist” – which clearly he didn’t. Do we need and want a similar system applied to the FPL – should we only reward a player if he genuinely intended to set up the scorer?

Perhaps we want the Telegraph’s Key Contribution instead – a system where more than one player can be awarded points for their role in creating a goal – in this case both Van Persie and Gervinho would have benefited.

I’m not sure that a perfect solution is available, but we can and will debate this further. While the definition of an assist in the FPL is clear, it does create cases that cause frustration and perhaps offer the need for things to be re-examined.

Personally, I’m far more frustrated by assists being awarded after positive intervention from a defender (a clearance). Demba Ba’s assist for Ryan Taylor’s goal against Everton being the latest case in point. That’s my own crusade and one I’ll go on pursuing.

Don’t get me wrong. While I’m firmly in the camp that we have to accept the fact that Van Persie did not earn an assist, I’m also aware that things are far from perfect.

It’s worth noting that the FPL did act as a result of Monday’s events by adding clarity to the rules concerning the revision of decisions. They now state the following:

“All assists are reviewed daily but remain provisional until verified by the Press Association. For the avoidance of doubt, points awarded in-game are subject to change until the Gameweek closes. Once a Gameweek closes, no further adjustments to points will be made.”

Better. Nobody can be in doubt now that, until the bonus points are allocated, assists can be added and removed. Whether we’re comfortable with that is another matter. The view is that it’s better to arrive at the correct decision later, than make a call in twenty-four hours or less and get it wrong. Again, it’s hard to argue against this. We all want a fair outcome – had Van Persie kept his assist in the FPL, it would have been the only Fantasy game to award it. That surely would not have been a fair outcome.

We want live updates on our scores, but perhaps if a decision is subject to review, at that point the associated points could be removed. Perhaps that would make the potential pill easier to swallow. Perhaps communication on decisions under review is also required.

Monday’s events have clearly raised a number of issues and, while, in my view, we have to put the specific case of Van Persie’s assist to bed, the classification of assists and the allocation of points under review, remain hot potatoes that will clearly spark further debate. Listen out for the next podcast is all I can say.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Krul/Vorm
    Naylor/Raylor/Enrique/Jones/Kompany
    Silva/Vdv/Dyer/Brunt/Walters
    Ade/Rvp/Aguero

Is there anything to strengthen don't want to make a transfer for the sake of it,
Was thinking maybe Naylor to Wilkinson, but with Stoke leaking goals lately not so sure

Westwood has nice fixtures as an alternative to Vorm.

You're kidding me right... he is the one who is on form in the ManU defence at the moment, and with smalling injured and the twins not match fit, he is always gonna be the man playing, even with the others back he is gonna play. SAF needs stability at the back and i think he has come to realise that recently so expect the same back 4 for a while!!

    Vorm (Westwood)

R Taylor Enrique Evans (Wilkinson, Simpson)

Are Arsenal now playing a similar style to Chelski with 3 up top (RVP flanked by Walcott and Gervinho)?

And, if so, does this mean that Ramsey will be a Modric-style player, giving the last pass before the assist?

Positions in modern football are always a bit difficult do pinpoint in my opinion, but the distinction between Arsenal and Chelsea here is that the Chelsea wingers in general play wider and start out higher up the pitch. The Arsenal wingers will more often collect the ball further down the pitch.

What all this means to Ramsey I don't know, Spurs definitely don't play with 3 up front. I think Ramsey's position won't be his main problem. He has every chance to be a good FPL prospect this year imo, but I do think he's still inconsistent and somewhat wasteful.

The Gunners have played that way for a long time, RVP always up the middle (when fit) and flanked by either Walcott, Gervinho or Arshavin. Ramsey and Arteta play further back in the heart of midfield, but Ramsey in particular plays further forward than Arteta. I'm not sure I would classify either as a Modric-style player, but I think Arteta is the more Modric-like player of the two as he usually plays more of a holding midfield role while Ramsey seems to have further license to get forward. With that being said, either one of them could score or assist in any given game (obviously).

Fail to see the connection. What does Chelsea have to do with Modric? I would say he's more likely to be closer to VdV in terms of position, a bit further back and far less prolific but further forward than Modric

The annoying thing about Arsenal is that their midfield three seem to alternate much more in the 'easier' games. It was one of the reasons that Fabregas didn't score as highly as in previous seasons, last year.

Take their last two games, Chelsea - obviously a hard fixture - and West Brom - a significantly easier one.

        http://soccernet.espn.go.com/gamecast?id=318251&cc=5739

In the Chelsea game, Ramsey is clearly further forward than Arteta and Song. Admittedly he still didn't manage to get a goal/assist in that game, not entirely sure how though because he was excellent and most of Arsenal's good play went through.

        http://soccernet.espn.go.com/gamecast?id=318085&cc=5739

Now, the West Brom game. Everyone who played in the middle for Arsenal during the game occupy virtually the same position on the average position map, highlighting the extent to which the players swap positions during the game.

Don't think Mignolet was doing that bad really, it was mainly his opponents against him and the defence in front of him that wasn't really cemented in very well at the beginning that didnt help him shine.

There is always that possibility, especially if the defence starts to really put in the hours, and he pulls of some saves that makes sure they win//keep clean sheets. Just depends how quick Mignolet gets back into match fitness and how well they are doing compared to each other in training and on the pitch? There is every possibility.

Best keeper to rotate with Ruddy? Given has to go, and I can't see past Vorm at the moment. If Vorm I may as well do it before his price rise in the next couple of hours if so. Whatcha reckon?

    Dunne, Simpson, Brown, Wilkinson, Woodgate

Yeah, I would definitely go for Sunderland/Stoke if I didn't already have 3 of them in my defence.... Also, questions over how long Westwood will actually play for. Even though Vorm has MUN this w/e, his price and form make him seem the only way to go. Any better options I'm overseeing? Robinson has great rotation and fixtures, but can BLA really keep a clean sheet. Ever?

Yeah don't go for Robinson. Westwood should be there for a while...and when Migno gets back, it shouldn't be hard to find a replacement if you play it right. Honestly though, get Vorm. He's in exceptional form and may surprise us with more clean sheets we never saw coming.

I think Swansea will struggle in the x-mas period. Kenny would be better. QPR has some good fixtures - they just played Chelsea and Man City and gave both teams a good game. Tarrabt is also out the team so they are a bit thicker in Midfield. Sunderland is a good option but will Mignolet come back early masked up? Will Gordon get a run, Will Westwood keep his place? Problem with Westwood is that you will have to change him again at a later date when he stops playing.

Changing goalkeepers seems a waste of a transfer, I got Hilario during Cech's injury and it did me no favours. Had to wait to transfer him out and take a huge loss on his price.

Vorm will get points making saves but I can't see their clean sheets continuing for long.

Best keeper to rotate with Ruddy till Jan is Howard.

Great fixtures between the pair of them, the only downside is Howard is £5.4m and Everton keep very few clean sheets.

      Drenthe I guess.
Everton's form worries me though. I know they've had some tough games but still, expected better

I wouldn't touch Drenthe because he is largely unproven in the PL, I still don't trust Sess, some returns or not, through a process of elimination then I am left with Ramsey, hardly ideal if you are trying to decide which is the best player to get.

What about O'Hara/Eagles/Ramiers? I have Ramsey and I am getting a little itchy on the trigger finger, he has 2 weeks after the break for me.\

      Oh, so Ramsey.

You don't need Ramsey if you have RVP. Drenthe, Sess and Walters should be above Ramsey imo (in that order).

I beg to differ. Ramsey is proven consistent, and (if you look at a poster's analysis above) he's going to have big returns if he keeps playing awesomely.

I want MW3 but will have to contend with Black Ops until my European Xbox finally dies and I get an American one and can buy MW3 and BF3 and Arkham City and the new Assassins Creed. Life is getting in the way of my video game playing. Take my girlfriend for example, she is on the couch asleep, and all I want to do is nestle in there and play some Black Ops, she just moved her foot, an in!

MW3 is Black ops/MW2 on steroids. Games never looked better, the playing is so smooth, it is visually stunning. Admittedly, I do prefer the style of multiplayer that BF3 has to offer more, but BF3's lack of any sort of cohesive awesome single player campaign and super super super buggy multiplayer (not to mention terrible EA servers and visuals that were meant for PC's) gives MW3 the edge. Again though, multiplayer on BF3 blows my mind. I own both so I have no problem...MW3=you can't go wrong.

I fear this Drenthe love is getting a bit out of hand. Saying that...i'm thinking about taking a 4 point hit to bring him in for Cabaye. I love a gamble and i think he has a very good chance of getting at least an assist. It would also be a good long-term move due their respective fixtures and Everton's possible double game-week. What do you reckon, worth a 4 point hit?

    So here' my team:
    Vorm
    ShawX Brown Enrique
    VDV Silva Sinclair Nani Moses
    RVP Studge
Subs – Given, Agbon, Collins, Simpson.
    2 FT 0.2 Bank

I'm thinking of removing Collins. Should I keep faith with Nani?

        Can you do

        Collins --> Jones
        Nani --> Drenthe/Eagles
        Agbon --> Rooney

        ?

Precisely the 3 players I wanted to remove.

I'd love to do that transfer. Can't afford it.

          I'm thinking:

          GW12:
Nani > Sess/Drenthe/Ramsey & Collins > Wilko. Allows me to sit out Enrique for MCI / Sinclair for MUN.

GW13: Bring in Roo for Agbon

          GW14: Given > Krul & ShawX > Jones/Komp

Your 11 is fairly decent as is, so this week I would just do Collins -> MaCauley and bench Enrique/Sinclair. This generates you 1.5m and leaves you with 2 transfers the following week (more time to reassess the Nani vs Rooney conundrum, which imo is a very close call...)

Disagree on Nani. MUN fixtures about to get excellent and he is usually in the mix. I don't have him but want him. Agree with the other 2, especially Collins.

O boy. You get me confused.

It's not as if I don't have faith in Nani. Now it's a question of Roo or Nani.

Hence I need to find a way to bring Roo in.

Someone talk me out of tripling up on Stoke defenders by giving a better alternative. Considering Given -> Begovic this week.

    Begovic
    Brown, Wilkinson, Woodgate
    Silva, VDV, Ramsey, Moses
    RVP, Aguero, Adebayor

    Ruddy, Sinclair, Dunne, Simpson
Bank 0.4m and 2 free transfers (prior to Given -> Begovic)

I think doubling or even tripling up on Stoke defenders/keeper is a bit insane, especially given their last few results.

Even if it's just for QPR and BLA? I'd expect at least 1 clean sheet from those 2 as Stoke normally solid at home. Also, I would be ditching one of Wilkinson/Woodgate after that...

No trust me. Play Vorm every week until the WC. He's on some goalkeeping form. Save the 1.0 mil elsewhere.

Krul/Schwarzer (rotate better) over Howard (too ex for a GK). But get Vorm.

Seriously I wouldnt do it. I know Stoke has a good few fixtures at home with no Europa. But if they keep on being poor playing away after Europa than you will be screwed in the long term. Not to mention theres a good chance Woody and Wilko will get rotated.

I was thinking about Begovic this week and then Krul in for Ruddy in GW16. Would mean GK fixtures up to the wildcard being:

QPR, BLA, eve, NEW, SWA, WBA, AVL, WIG, bla, QPR.

        Seems pretty decent?

Thats actually really good. Depends though, if you dont have any areas in your team to improve than go for it. But for me 5.2 + 4.6 keepers are too expensive and I still wont have the balls to triple on Stoke's def.

Dude, don't be insane. Two weeks down the line you will be thinking to yourself : what the fu*k was i thinking..now i gotta waste transfers getting these shysters out my team.

I'd go Given -> Howard (gulp), and maybe leave it at that. I reckon you can get better value than Ramsey though in the longer term, and obviously Moses could do with an upgrade.
