Having announced his return from injury with β€œthat” goal against West Brom in gameweek eleven, Thomas Vermaelen leaps into our newly-updated Watchlist rankings. With a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon for the foreseeable future, the Belgian seems poised for investment as the new-look Arsenal begin to click into place.

Absent for two months with an ankle problem, Vermaelen’s return to the Gunners back-four saw Arsene Wenger’s side record back-to-back clean sheets at the Emirates a fortnight ago. A goalless draw with Marseille in the Champions League was followed by a 3-0 canter over the Baggies, with Arsenal hinting at the “maturity” Arsene Wenger recently spoke of. Vermaelen’s first start since gameweek two coincided with Arsenal’s first clean sheet in the league since gameweek six and saw him return a 15 point haul for his Fantasy owners, with 3 bonus points also picked up for his display at both ends of the pitch.

Despite a wealth of centre-halves to choose from, Wenger tends to favour the Belgian when fit. Vermaelen is far more than just a conventional defender- though an Achilles injury blighted his appearances last term, he grabbed 7 goals in his debut campaign for Arsenal back in 2009/10 and has taken little time to serve a reminder of his attacking sensibilities.

A partnership with Per Mertesacker could flourish at the heart of the back-four, though the likes of Laurent Koscielny will also come into the equation, with Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci set to stay peripheral figures, perhaps only called upon when injuries deprive Wenger of first-choice options.

The loss of Cesc Fabregas is now behind them and with five wins in the last six league games, it’s clear the new summer signings are starting to gel. A look at the upcoming schedule (nor, FUL, wig, EVE, mci, avl, WOL, QPR) only offers more promise of Fantasy returns and with just one of the next eight fixtures posing any major difficulty, the 6.7 priced Vermaelen could provide a timely boost for any potential backers.

Injury prone, plus he'll be playing alongside a clown one way or the other when he does play, hitting CS, this to me does not justify that kind of layout.

I’m planning Walters & Suarez out for Silva & Bentner.

Question is should I do it this week for a 4pt hit. (although Silva will have flown to Costa Rica and back, will he be on form this week?)

Just do Suarez > Bentner this week and the other next week, even though Suarez scored a quad for Uruguay and is playing a questionable Chelsea defence (until last week).

Or just wait ’til next week and do both for free?

    Thoughts?

Stoke's fixtures look good at first glance but everyone's ignoring the fact that they're less useful than a chocolate teapot after a European game. So you can probably write off the games against Everton and Wolves, plus they play Spurs and Man City amongst those. So the only 'easy' games they've got really are the next 2, QPR and Blackburn at home.

    Hello

    Please can you RMT?

    Given (vorm)

    Richards, Jones, Ward (Simpson, Gabbidon)

    Silva, Petrov, VDV, Moses (dyer)

    Rooney, RVP, Adebayor

I have one free transfer and 0.2m in the bank.

What do you think I should do?

I was thinking of doing one of the following:

    1. Given to Westwood

    2. Given to Westwood AND petrov to either Ramsey, drenthe or sessegnon (-4)

    Please vote ASAP!!!!

That would be QPR not Norwich. As for NEW, next three at home are CHEL, SWAN, WBROM, followed by MU, QPR, VILLA. That's 2 tough home games in six, and they've the joint best Def in the Prem.

I'll be switching Given to Krul after this GW.

QPR have 4 CS so far, that's better than most.

Point about NEW & Krul still stands. Strip out this GW, they've 4/5 excellent homes games lined up.

Vermaelen is a good buy compared to the inflated prices of players like Baines and Vidic, who don't get me wrong, have great potential but way overpriced. If I had the dosh, I would have gotten Verm in for Bos, but only had enough for Santos, who could be a dark horse in FPL. Santos also has a great goals-per-game ratio from his previous clubs and gets down the wings for a few crosses so assist potential is good too. He's now the first choice left-back in a more solid Arsenal defence. While he's still not cheap at 6.0, he's still a good punt if you can't afford the extra 0.7 for Verm. Santos has been doing me proud in the UCL game πŸ™‚

I always find these articles interesting and fairly well researched, if anyone likes reading about starlets and up and coming players read these:

    http://www.skysports.com/football/transfers/scout/0,24035,15198_7077460,00.html

Anything above 60/80 is pretty damn good.

    Neymar - 62
    Muller - 62
    Hernandez - 58

    All,

    Current team.

    Foster (Vorm)
    Kompany Wilkinson Bosingwa (Naylor, Simpson)
    Silva Walters VDV Ramsey (Ferguson)
    RVP (c) Suarez Sturridge

1 FT and £2.6m in the Bank.

My current thinking is Bosingwa to BAE this week to free up enough funds for Walters to A Young when he is back fit or Suarez to Rooney next week.

    Any other suggestions?

    Cheers!!

Sounds fine to me, but I'd much prefer Suarez to Rooney. Maybe Walker over BAE, simply because Walker is a little cheaper, although its arguable that BAE sees a little more of the ball!

Young is cheaper option than Nani was my only thinking.

My most pressing issue is Bos and I agree with Ferguson but always seems to be a more urgent transfer. If VDV doesn't make it this week then the Ferguson tactic shows its failings as I will have Naylor coming off bench rather than midfield option.

Really don't want to take a hit to replace Ferguson so will probably stay till wildcard now. Going to try and work Drenthe in over December and maybe Bale / Adebayor to make most of DGW before the wildcard the next week.

Ranked 13k so far so Ferguson has done me proud up to now!!

Yeah not worth a hit to lose Fergie I have the same problem with De Laet. There's always something else you want to do more.
Bos could well play next week, but as you say, you don't have the backup if he and VDV don't make it.

Depends on where you are willing to spend the money.

      1. Tiote > Nani
      2. Warnock > Vermaelen
      3. Murphy > Bale (ready for DGW coming up in early Jan)

      In that order I'd suggest.

Probably looking at Midfield replacement for Tiote, a cheap striker, and consider 3 5 2
