[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

I never understood why a professional athlete can’t cope with playing more than one game of football in a week. I used to play for four hours every night then jog home. Down the park, jumpers for goalposts, isn’t it? Marvellous.

Talk of rest, rotation and jetlag has been rife this week; just when we get a side that looks capable of destroying our mini league rivals, along comes an International break and Champions League fixtures to mess with our heads. At least we can rely on some mid-table “differentials” to bypass all that nonsense…

Mauro Formica

We picked out Mauro Formica as a differential back in week one when he was still very much an unknown quantity, and despite an up and down start to the season for Blackburn, Mauro Formica has shown enough promise in recent weeks to bring him back into our thinking. Reveling in his role just behind Yakubu, Formica has been central to many of Blackburn’s attacking ploys, picking up a goal and an assist in his last three games.

At 5.0, Formica sits at the very bottom end of the market and looks a great alternative for that fifth midfielder slot, designed to free up funds. Fixtures look pretty appealing compared to alternatives like Victor Moses and Nathan Dyer. Indeed, two consecutive away trips won’t worry Rovers given that they’ve scored in every game on the road this season. After that, Steve Kean’s side enjoy a decent run of opponents, which could see Formica return further profits.

Gareth McAuley

At 4.0, defenders don’t come any cheaper than Gareth McAuley and with West Brom about to embark on a decent run of fixtures, he looks like outstanding value. He might not be the glamour signing you’ve been craving after two weeks without a fantasy football fix, but as a long term investment, he looks like a solid pick and a good differential considering his low ownership of just 0.9%.

Points wise, we expect to see a decent amount of clean sheets from Roy Hodgson’s side this season. They’ve managed three so far, which is already more than they had the whole of last season. McAuley has also suggested that he could come good with the odd goal and assist. A career average of a goal every 10 games is hardly Lionel Messi standards, but for a defender, that shows promise. A look over his EA PPI scores also suggests he should be in for a few extra bonus points to add to the three he picked up in the 0-0 draw with Fulham.

Jack Rodwell

After Royston Drenthe leapfrogged the differentials straight into the Scout Picks this week, we’re taking a look at his midfield partner Jack Rodwell as a potential alternative. At 0.7 cheaper, an almost guaranteed starter and probably Everton’s form player of the last few games, Rodwell is much more than a poor second choice. With the confidence gained from his International debut, we’re expecting a big performance from the young England star against Wolves.

Despite previously being talked up as a future centre-half, Rodwell has developed into a quality box to box midfielder, and looks a much improved fantasy prospect compared to last year. The departure of Mikel Arteta and return to fitness of Marouane Fellaini has allowed Rodwell a lot more freedom in the middle of the park, and two goals in three games are evidence of this new attacking threat. Our recent members ‘Talent’ article provides all the stats to back up our hunch this week, and with ownership of just 1.9%, Rodwell could well sneak under the radar to provide a solid differential return over Everton’s next three fixtures.

            Good on him.

So do you personally think Formica is a good option SD? I mean 5m is cheap as chips but his PPG is not impressive etc

I just don't love the Drenthe option and I need to get rid of Petrov

Yeah i do think he is a good option. I started the season with him actually. He is playing OOP although when Rochina starts he often ends up swapping with Formica. Like you say £5m is minimal risk and he is certainly one of our most creative players.

He's one of the few Rovers players i'd consider buying at some point, the other being Samba, Hoilett and of course, SuperDunny 😀

Cool. Like the idea of him. Will try and catch some more Blackburn games, been watching waaay too much top6 teams this season. Not good.

Think I'll still take the punt on Royston Drenthe for now though, and I just know I will hate myself for it

You won't regret getting Drenthe, you may regret watching more Rovers games! 😀
Seriously though, we are showing signs that things may be on the up, some good performances, good attitude and a bit of bad luck.
We will not be relegated this season! 😉

OK, let's try this another way:

    or

B: Drenthe for Nasri, RVP for Ade, Formica for Anderson - 4 POINT HIT

It's all part of Mancini's clear strategy since he came in, especially this season - build a huge squad, make them all compete for places, don't let anyone think they can afford not to improve. Based on the performances of Aguero, Dzeko, Balotelli, Nasri, Silva, Richards, and especially Johnson's performances and signing a new contract, I'd say it's genius in progress.

So Giggs/Carrick/Fletcher/Gibson/Anderson in the 22 man match day squad, and from what I am hearing at least Anderson won't make it with Gibson a doubt, Rooney back up front, I am going for it and captaining him!

Carrick and Fletcher in midfield, if Swansea just do line dancing they'll win the ball back all day, neither of them are capable of a forward pass.

The whole point of Rooney dropping into midfield was to cover for the missing players! Even if Anderson/Gibson made it he'd probably be there, if either or both of them don't then he's guaranteed to be there!

    What's best?

    A) Bosingwa > Brown
    B) Bosingwa > McAuley
    C) Bosingwa > Shawcross
    D) Bosingwa > Brown & Dyer > Drenthe -4pts
    E) Bosingwa > Assou-Ekotto & Dyer > Rodwell - 4pts
    F) Bosingwa > Assou-Ekotto & Dyer > Eagles -4pts
    G) Bosingwa > Walker & Dyer > Formica -4pts

Thought of that already, the reason people came up with that "rule" is that if you take a playing defender out (2pts) for a new player you won't gain even if the new one keeps a CS. But Bosingwa isn't a playing defender, as things stand he's going to get 0pts.

I know there's a lot of talk about vermaelen but just wondering why no-one is mentioning santos? Granted he can't defend but he's 0.7 cheaper and looks as though he has some attacking points in him, plus Gibbs is out for a while so he should have a free run as left back

Yes been considering him. Since CS points are given out to the whole backline if Vermaelen & Mertesacker/Koscielny can do the defensive work, he becomes an option. I think Arsenal can get a CS tomorrow.

Would it be too much of a gamble to go without Silva in my WC team?

Looking ahead his fixtures are probably the toughest they will be at any stage of the season. If we go with him through this he’s a season keeper.

ooohhh I.T.....it's what I've been thinking about all day at work too!

I've gone w/o Kompany on my WC and was attributing the same logic to Silva, ie...baddish fixtures.

However I think he is "a must have" just for the moment though. A few 2s in a row won't really hurt you as 50% have him and the rest of ur WC team will bring you over the line

    My dilemma:

    I have a backline of:

    Kompany Evans Wilkinson (Bosingwa Simpson)

Now Evans, Bosingwa and Wilkinson have all been highlighted by posters on here as unlikely to play...
would anyone take a 4 point hit to ship Bos out for someone>? or do i just hang it out.....?!
