[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

I never understood why a professional athlete can’t cope with playing more than one game of football in a week. I used to play for four hours every night then jog home. Down the park, jumpers for goalposts, isn’t it? Marvellous.

Talk of rest, rotation and jetlag has been rife this week; just when we get a side that looks capable of destroying our mini league rivals, along comes an International break and Champions League fixtures to mess with our heads. At least we can rely on some mid-table “differentials” to bypass all that nonsense…

Mauro Formica

We picked out Mauro Formica as a differential back in week one when he was still very much an unknown quantity, and despite an up and down start to the season for Blackburn, Mauro Formica has shown enough promise in recent weeks to bring him back into our thinking. Reveling in his role just behind Yakubu, Formica has been central to many of Blackburn’s attacking ploys, picking up a goal and an assist in his last three games.

At 5.0, Formica sits at the very bottom end of the market and looks a great alternative for that fifth midfielder slot, designed to free up funds. Fixtures look pretty appealing compared to alternatives like Victor Moses and Nathan Dyer. Indeed, two consecutive away trips won’t worry Rovers given that they’ve scored in every game on the road this season. After that, Steve Kean’s side enjoy a decent run of opponents, which could see Formica return further profits.

Gareth McAuley

At 4.0, defenders don’t come any cheaper than Gareth McAuley and with West Brom about to embark on a decent run of fixtures, he looks like outstanding value. He might not be the glamour signing you’ve been craving after two weeks without a fantasy football fix, but as a long term investment, he looks like a solid pick and a good differential considering his low ownership of just 0.9%.

Points wise, we expect to see a decent amount of clean sheets from Roy Hodgson’s side this season. They’ve managed three so far, which is already more than they had the whole of last season. McAuley has also suggested that he could come good with the odd goal and assist. A career average of a goal every 10 games is hardly Lionel Messi standards, but for a defender, that shows promise. A look over his EA PPI scores also suggests he should be in for a few extra bonus points to add to the three he picked up in the 0-0 draw with Fulham.

Jack Rodwell

After Royston Drenthe leapfrogged the differentials straight into the Scout Picks this week, we’re taking a look at his midfield partner Jack Rodwell as a potential alternative. At 0.7 cheaper, an almost guaranteed starter and probably Everton’s form player of the last few games, Rodwell is much more than a poor second choice. With the confidence gained from his International debut, we’re expecting a big performance from the young England star against Wolves.

Despite previously being talked up as a future centre-half, Rodwell has developed into a quality box to box midfielder, and looks a much improved fantasy prospect compared to last year. The departure of Mikel Arteta and return to fitness of Marouane Fellaini has allowed Rodwell a lot more freedom in the middle of the park, and two goals in three games are evidence of this new attacking threat. Our recent members ‘Talent’ article provides all the stats to back up our hunch this week, and with ownership of just 1.9%, Rodwell could well sneak under the radar to provide a solid differential return over Everton’s next three fixtures.

Don't know my team value is 104.7 and have made a total of 18 transfers, I have 607 points not too bad decision making when taking hits. I got rid of Silva and Kompany for Lampard and Jones. Planning on doing a Lampard > Silva if Lampard gets another yellow and gets suspended. Not sweating on not having Man City players for now, I think my team is good enough to survive.

    Vorm. Ruddy
    Jones-Simpson-McAuley-Brown-Wilkinson
    Silva-VDV-Sess-Walters-Sinclair
    Rooney-RVP-Klasnic

1.1m in bank to hopefully get in Enrique in a few weeks.
Not too sure on Klasnic….should i get rid of Sess, and get in Bendy for Klasnic. Then who should I get in for Sess? Eagles?

Get Bendtner in for Klasnic and Drenthe in for Sess.

Also, consider getting Joe Allen or Pilkington instead of Sinclair or Walters. They will allow you to upgrade your defence a bit as you have a lot of cheapies but you are over reliant on them in your current lineup.

Either get Jenny now instead of in a few weeks time (when his price will probably have risen) or pop Richards or Kompany there alongside Jones.

That would be a very decent side indeed.

Does anyone else have a really strong feeling vdv will be benched? I think the optimism on this site might be misplaced. They won't want to risk him especially since defoe has been playing well and adebayor arguably plays better with defoe, so there's no real disperation to risk vdv.

I have one free transfer remaining.. tempted to sell.

It's the same sentiment I had the other night - I don't know how many times Harry emphasised last season that they would not take a risk with him as it could be a case of 2 months out instead of 1 week.

Was thinking VDV > Bale but just can't bring myself to do it...

Always a risk...we had a long VDV vs Bale discussion for Picks. Could have easily gone with both but felt that was perhaps overkill. In the end, we opted for VDV because he's potentially more explosive and he has those set-pieces. Like you say though, he could easily be out or perhaps preserved on the bench.

Yes I think VDV might only play 45 min or 60 min if lucky. But I wouldn't jump ship yet think it's a waste of a transfer. Although it depends what price you brought him for.

I think 75% to start is pretty accurate. 'Arry rarely rests him unless he's injured proper, I reckon he'll get 70 minutes which is enough to do damage. Remember he bagged a brace in both Villa clashes last season!

The doubt is enough for me to switch (C) to RVP, but not considering selling him. He's fanrasy gold. But I take your point about Defoe.

    Vorm (Krul)
    Jones Kompany Woodgate (Saylor, Naylor)
    VDV Silva Drenthe Dyer (B.J)
    RVP Aguero Sturridge

Drenthe is already in on a free, considering a 4-point hit:

    B.Johnson --> Walters
    or

Ok, my team looked ok yesterday. Now I'm not so sure as, I have four injured players - Cleverley and Mignolet who are both badly injured. And VDV and Best who have a 50% or more chance of playing. I still have a free transfer to use, so wondering whether to use that and make one more so take a 4 point hit to fix my team. I have posted my team below:

    Vorm, Mignolet
    Kompany, Wilkinson, Bosingwa, Ward, Simpson
    Cleverley, Ramsey, Mata, VDV, Silva
    Best, Rooney, Adebayor

Any advice is appreciated. If the 4 point hit is best, which two players would be best to remove? As always, thanks in advance.

thoughts on Mark Halsey? he will be in charge if Spurs v Villa? anyone know if he's known for givin penalties on regular basis?

you may find it weird but refs appointment matters to me when it comes to choosing captain and stuff like that. Feel good about Phil Down on the Arsenal game away at Norwich, think there will be a penalty for arsenal.

Why are so many people saying that it's ridiculous to take a 4pt hit for a keeper? Let's face it, it's very rare that you'll have a week where there won't be a more pressing transfer so unless you wildcard, you're probably not going to make the change for free.

I had Given/Ruddy but they rotate pretty badly from now till Jan wildcard, so this week I've took a 4pt hit to bring in Howard for Given as I now have keeper fixtures of - WOL, QPR, STO, NEW, NOR, SWA, TOT, FUL, BOL/tot (double gw)

I should easily make the 4pts back and more so don't get why people aren't thinking long term on this issue?

See my rant somewhere dog. All about the four point hits for keepers. Just did the same. Oh online arguing and horrible transfers I love you. I also have one defender who is valued at more than 4.3 million. Oh hey-zeus christo

I'd go Lamps or Silva, maybe Lamps as Silva may not play the full game due to CL in midweek.

Not worth doing the transfer as Roo probably will be back up top and has nice fixtures ahead

      Enrique, Dyer, Simpson surely.
Don't expect Dyer to get anything but appearance points whereas Enrique could sneak a CS, assist, or BPs.

No chance for a CS imo, an assist at best..

Just figured Dyer was worth the 1st spot due to his showing at Anfield last week

True, but that was due to 3BPs. This only went to a player who didn't score because the match was goalless and they figured he made a good contribution. If there's goals involved he'll be way down the PPI scores and I see a goal at least in that match - which is much more likely to be Sincalir's than Dyer's.

I've looked at this from so many different angles so I'm pitching you this simple question:

How many points will each of these players get this GW? (Include possibility of not starting...)

    A) Bosingwa
    B) Brown
    C) Jones
    D) Dyer
    E) Drenthe
    F) Eagles
    G) Balotelli
    H) Sturridge

Just took a look at the CHE strikers to see who's fit and isn't it a little worrying it reads

          Sturridge 36pts
          Anelka 24
          Torres 16
          Drogba 14
          Lukaku 3

With the top scorer seemingly completely out of form. They could rest him but for whom?
