[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

I never understood why a professional athlete can’t cope with playing more than one game of football in a week. I used to play for four hours every night then jog home. Down the park, jumpers for goalposts, isn’t it? Marvellous.

Talk of rest, rotation and jetlag has been rife this week; just when we get a side that looks capable of destroying our mini league rivals, along comes an International break and Champions League fixtures to mess with our heads. At least we can rely on some mid-table “differentials” to bypass all that nonsense…

Mauro Formica

We picked out Mauro Formica as a differential back in week one when he was still very much an unknown quantity, and despite an up and down start to the season for Blackburn, Mauro Formica has shown enough promise in recent weeks to bring him back into our thinking. Reveling in his role just behind Yakubu, Formica has been central to many of Blackburn’s attacking ploys, picking up a goal and an assist in his last three games.

At 5.0, Formica sits at the very bottom end of the market and looks a great alternative for that fifth midfielder slot, designed to free up funds. Fixtures look pretty appealing compared to alternatives like Victor Moses and Nathan Dyer. Indeed, two consecutive away trips won’t worry Rovers given that they’ve scored in every game on the road this season. After that, Steve Kean’s side enjoy a decent run of opponents, which could see Formica return further profits.

Gareth McAuley

At 4.0, defenders don’t come any cheaper than Gareth McAuley and with West Brom about to embark on a decent run of fixtures, he looks like outstanding value. He might not be the glamour signing you’ve been craving after two weeks without a fantasy football fix, but as a long term investment, he looks like a solid pick and a good differential considering his low ownership of just 0.9%.

Points wise, we expect to see a decent amount of clean sheets from Roy Hodgson’s side this season. They’ve managed three so far, which is already more than they had the whole of last season. McAuley has also suggested that he could come good with the odd goal and assist. A career average of a goal every 10 games is hardly Lionel Messi standards, but for a defender, that shows promise. A look over his EA PPI scores also suggests he should be in for a few extra bonus points to add to the three he picked up in the 0-0 draw with Fulham.

Jack Rodwell

After Royston Drenthe leapfrogged the differentials straight into the Scout Picks this week, we’re taking a look at his midfield partner Jack Rodwell as a potential alternative. At 0.7 cheaper, an almost guaranteed starter and probably Everton’s form player of the last few games, Rodwell is much more than a poor second choice. With the confidence gained from his International debut, we’re expecting a big performance from the young England star against Wolves.

Despite previously being talked up as a future centre-half, Rodwell has developed into a quality box to box midfielder, and looks a much improved fantasy prospect compared to last year. The departure of Mikel Arteta and return to fitness of Marouane Fellaini has allowed Rodwell a lot more freedom in the middle of the park, and two goals in three games are evidence of this new attacking threat. Our recent members ‘Talent’ article provides all the stats to back up our hunch this week, and with ownership of just 1.9%, Rodwell could well sneak under the radar to provide a solid differential return over Everton’s next three fixtures.

Ok lads here is the deal:

My defense is Jones KOmpany and I am considering the third defender, Thinking of doing Simpson to Wilko, but I am worried about his rotation and question marks about my 2 forwards. So the options are:

A: Simpson to Wilko, already have Saylor.
B: Sturridge to Bendtner - That statement that he didn't train on Friday worries me.
C: Aguero to Bendther and making cash for Lamps against Wolves. That statement from Mancini that he is tired due to the long flight also worries me.

Combine 2 of them and make a 4 point hit. Please opinion and why?

Simpson -> Wilko looks sound imo.. Simpson likely to score very lightly over the next few weeks.. Wilkinson seems to be nailed on, dont know why he would be dropped unless been taken off early against Bolton influences it.. If he starts tomorrow he is likely to keep his place, if he doesn't play you will get Taylor from the bench anyway who would have scored the same as simpson so nothing to lose!

That leaves #1, although I'd rather have Simpson than Saylor, due to price.

    Hi chaps anyone still about?

WC played so feel free to boost my ego or burst my bubble. 🙂 thx

    Westwood

    Richards Wilko Verminator

    Bale VDV Drente Silva

    Bendy(uhoh) RVP Gervinho(!)

    Rubberdubs: Vorm Eagles Brown Simpson

No united but if its not Roo or Nani then no real point but I will probably go Richards>Jones at some point.

Went Gervinho, discounted Dzeko cos of rotation risk, Ade.. well cos its Ade and The chap with the big forehead seems on decent plodding form, a good differential as is Tommy V?
Not overly happy with Eagles but Roysten will be playing a lot over the next few weeks so Im ok with that.

    Thoughts as always appreciated. 🙂

Welcome to Newman's weekend worries. They are infinite this week as I have two transfers and I'm only using one.

Why, you ask? Because I'm not sure on the form of so many bandwagons around here that I don't want t use a transfer until I have more information.

Of course, that means I'm pulling my hair out over a number of concerns.

    1. I have Sturridge. Concern city here. May not start, now with a knock. Was already recommended I transfer out for the Bendy Bus. Now it seems very hard to hold onto that free transfer. No sunderland coverage at all.

    2. Drenthe is Mr. Must-have of the international break. I just don't see the point of buying into Everton offense..........ever. Plus, it would involve reducing one of Rooney, VDV, or Nani.

    3. Nani could be rotated.

    4. Silva could be rotated.

    5. ShawX may not be healthy.

    6. VDV may not be healthy. Bale is looking like a possibly switch-in.

7.Rooney is looking likely to play midfield.

    8. 3-7 are burning because I HAVE A FREE TRANSFER!

    9. I am starting Victor Woeses. Home at Blackburn is a such of a last chance as possible.

    10. To recap....no walters, Sess, Bendy, or Drenthe. Scary Scary.

Very concerning this week, but I can't help but feel I will want this transfer later.

      Don't think i would worry about 3, 4, 6.
Believe ManU are gonna be in need for Nani for output to the tight defence.
Silva usually gets picked if fit, especially with Nasri probs out.
VDV - sounds positive he will play by his own words, sounds like he wants too.

No point worrying about Nani, Silva, VDV, Roonpig - they'll all start imo. Even if they don't your covered but the point is you will need these players next week.

I haven't got Drenthe either but EVE are hardly flowing with goals at present and WOL will make it difficult.

Just done Tierney/Studge -> McAuley/Bendtner if it helps you 🙂

Yes, all this talk from CHS is worrying. Reading between the lines from what AVB was saying earlier, it appears that Studge is not a definite starter, particulalry with the ever threat of rotation.

Not keen to be w/out CHS cover, mind you 🙁

Sturridge is a rotation risk..........what did AVB say, exactly?

I would hate no chels, as well.

I am thinking of saving Studge to transfer out for Ba in 2-3 weeks. Makes me not want to just get rid for Bendy now. I don't know.

Curses, I had just about decided before I found out my sensei jumped on the Bendy-bus.

"I am thinking of saving Studge to transfer out for Ba in 2-3 weeks. Makes me not want to just get rid for Bendy now." Precisely my plan as well.

Also, Studge is not yet a rotation risk. He's our best forward/winger(after Mata) for Christ's sake. If anything, Torres should be dropped.

OK might be rested if anything. But don't you want to save him for the WOL game? CHE are bound to some damage there. We are like leeches, love to feed on the weaker teams.

                Ok.....urge to get Bendy......slowly subsiding........

                but not dead.

I may be up late over this. Sturridge just seems smarter, but Bendy is the safer bet, I think. surely even next week Bendy home to Wigan is as nice as Studge home to Wolves, right?

Er, I dont know now. but I do think I'll want Ba back, and in that case, clearly a wasted transfer.

AVB mentioned about Studge being on England duty during the week and being non-committal over starting him for the LIV game. I still see him playing at some point - just not sure for how long.

Bendtner's fix are a big lure I must admit. 3/4 at home. My thought is that he will be able to match Studge's ff output over these 4 games.

I need someone that's going to start and play in a central position. Studge's wide berth is a little worrying. Bendtner's on pens too.

Okay so think short term for the next 4 games.

Bendtner is averaging 5 ppg in last 6. Studge I think is slightly less.

A good question to ask is: what's the worst that can happen?

If Bendtner continues to score at that average, he'll have mustered 20 pts. 20pts from 4 games is pretty good going and even if Studge eclipses that total, it won't be by much.

Jafa, can you explain the thought process behind getting bendy?

Sturridge has a great fixture next week, and youre basically paying 6.5 for Chelsea's best scoring threat.

also.........I was meaning to get rid for Ba in 2-3 weeks. Surely that means its logical to just save the transfer. Although I guess I cannot assume Ba will score better than Bendy.

                Anyway..........thoughts please, sensei?

I hear you. This is why I want to have a defense which might score a few points.
Vorm, Given, 2 New, Barnett, Jose and Bos don't look promising.

So do I spend a bit and get in say Westwood & Vermaelen. Or do I go the McAuley route and save up for Rooney next week?

      Hello Newman.

Succinct and cogent. All this Studge > Bendy talk is giving me the heeby-jeebies. Is 11:40 am too early to start drinking? I think I'll need a few stiff ones to push that particular transfer button.

I know I'm a little late to the party here, but I've been looking at Sturridge to Bendy or even Suarez to Bendy all week. I was set on one of them.

Then I saw that Bendy only had 4 shots on goal in the last 4 weeks (according to OPTA). And someone mentioned that the offense may not click without Laarsson, which I found persuasive.

So I went Sturridge to Adebayor. RVP, Suarez, Ade front line. No chelsea cover. Here's to hoping...

I have already taken a 4 point hit last week in the thought of using my Wildcard.

Do I keep my team as is

    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Kompany Enrique Shawcross P.Jones Simpson
    VdV Silva Ramsey Pilkington Dyer
    RvP Suarez Agbonlahor

or use the Wildcard and do
    Dyer->Drenthe
    Agbonlahor->Hoilett
    maybe Suarez->?
    maybe Shawcross/Jones->Brown
    ?

    Which option do you reckon?

Very strong, keep the wildcard. Not many people have the perfect team, chasing the points usually ends in tears.

You've got no frees left, see how the weekend pans out. Only the Drenthe transfer looks decent, though he's not urgent and not worth a hit. Your midfield is decent as it is.

Is anyone else in a similar boat? I could end up with the following not playing:

    Wilkinson
De Laet (I know, gone next week)
    Aguero
    Sturridge
    Jones
    VDV

I've done it, not looking back. Bale looks back to his best, hard to ignore at that price. Look at VDV as out of position, you've technically got a Spurs mid + forward, but with both sat in mid on your team sheet.
