After yesterday’s Premier League bonanza of eight games, today we have to settle for just a single fixture. It’s a potential cracker though, as Chelsea take on Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. The Dugout Discussion opens it’s doors for the short shift, and the team news is in…

Chelsea XI: Cech, Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Mikel, Lampard, Mata, Drogba, Malouda.

Liverpool XI: Reina, Enrique, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Lucas, Adam, Kuyt, Maxi, Bellamy, Suarez.

The headline news concerns the names that don’t appear on those team sheets. Three players that cost their respective clubs a total of over £100m in 2011 all feature on the bench. Chelsea opt for Didier Drogba over former Liverpool star Fernando Torres, and Liverpool leave out Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing in favour of Craig Bellamy and Maxi Rodriquez.

Elsewhere, David Luiz and Florent Malouda get the nod ahead of Alex and Daniel Sturridge respectively.

      Absolutely shocking aint they.
      I cant believe they've picked a team so lacking in pace. Shocking.

      They seriously need to ship some players and bring in some talent.
      Malouda, Drogs, Terry, Lamps are all way past it.

        Would be silly ditching AVB so soon though. I think he wants more pace too, wait and see who he buys.

        Agreed. That's the problem with buying a team though (in 2003), the gains were all short term and now without a successful youth set up they are screwed. By sacking their manager each year they get a load of expensive players who aren't wanted or needed by the next manager. They spent 100m this year?! Unbelievable.

        Steady on, i wouldn't call Terry, Drogs, or Lamps past it yet, there s just no stability. AVB keeps changing his squad.

          I think its a combo of both. Terry is done IMO. But, I still think Drogs, Lamps and Malouda have some gas in the tank. The problem is that Drogs and Malouda are getting inconsistent minutes which is leading to inconsistent play.

          LFC is making CFC look old though.

      I like it. Most will say that you're too defence-heavy, but there are so many under-performing mids and forwards that an expensive defence with attacking potential might be the way to go. VDV, Silva and RVP are obviously great shouts.

        yeah.. aprt from those 3 there is NO ONE i'm interested in.. and baines richard and jones are so attacking it's difficult to ignore anymore.. can play 2 of ramsey walters pilkington and graham every week.. gives me a strong 11 every week with 3 good captain choices and baines

    Chelsea back to their ponderous selves, and Liverpool capitalizing on all their mistakes. Malouda and Drogba was all very well in 2009/10 but they're not the players they were.

    Oh, and Mikel is Chelsea's Carrick, only worse. They need Meireles on, or that Romeu chap. Who would've thought at the start of September that Spurs and Arsenal are more likely to finish 3rd/4th than Chelsea/Liverpool?

      No, I think Ivanovic should always play ahead of Bosingwa at all times. I think Ivanovic is holding his own today, no silly errors and always helpful in the air at both ends.

        Ivanovic is in my post as CB - Bosingwa at RB. He could provide extra defensive coverage for Bos on the right. Terry should not be a guaranteed starter and is playing in Luiz's preferred Position.
