Our fifth week of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game came to a close, with an English side finally clinching a place in the knock-out stages. Hats off to Arsene Wenger, then, with Arsenal’s win over Dortmund just one of eight fixtures we’re running the rule over…

FC APOEL

The attacking stats (37% of possession and just one shot all game) do the Cypriot champions no favours but, right now, do they care? Not in the slightest. In arguably the most competitive group of all, FC APOEL have exceeded all expectations by becoming the first team from Cyprus to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages with a 0-0 draw away at Zenit St. Petersburg.

Unbeaten in all three games on the road, victories in both home games so far, APOEL’s resolute display and adept work off the ball was exemplified by the likes of Nuno Morais last night, with 10 recovered balls and a clean sheet handing the defender an 8 point Fantasy haul. People often mock the boring and predictable nature of the Champions League group stages but APOEL have ripped up the form book and proved the doubters wrong, clinching a place in the last sixteen with a game still to spare.

Robin Van Persie

It’s more a case of “how many” whenever the Dutchman takes to the pitch these days. Dortmund arrived at the Emirates in strong form last night but Arsenal continued their recent resurgence by sweeping aside the Bundesliga champions. Alex Song deserves a mention, dancing through the away defence to set up the hosts’ opener but Van Persie, once again, stole the show with both his side’s goals in the 2-1 win. The Gunners skipper played the full ninety minutes last night but will have until Saturday dinnertime to recover, with a 5.30pm kick off against Fulham next on the agenda.

Didier Drogba

The big Ivorian was once again chosen to lead the line ahead of Fernando Torres. Having started against Liverpool last weekend, Drogba vindicated his selection last night by firing the Blues ahead at Leverkusen. Andre Villas-Boas’ side once again came unstuck, though, and are anything but certain to progress to the knockout stages. A goalless draw or win at home to Valencia in the final group match is now required but given their defensive woes, nothing seems certain right now for the out of sorts Blues.

Roberto Soldado

Pretty much the whole Valencia team got in on the action last night as the Spanish side sliced through Genk like a hot machete through butter. Roberto Soldado provided the cutting edge, grabbing a hat trick inside the first thirty-six 36 minutes to return a 13 point Fantasy haul half-time whistle. Team mates Pablo Hernandez (11), Costa (12) and Jonas (12) all picked up substantial hauls and have helped their side’s chances of qualification no end. By our calculations, with the Valencia goal difference now suitably amped up, they can qualify for the next round with a score draw away at Stamford Bridge next Matchday.

Lionel Messi

A night of heavy sparring between the European heavyweights of AC Milan and Barcelona ended in a narrow victory for the visitors in a five-goal San Siro thriller.

The indomitable Clarence Seedorf teed up Zlatan Ibrahimovic to open the scoring against his old club- one he had talked about a fair bit in his recently released book. Kevin-Prince Boateng made that seem a distant memory with this cracker of a goal for the home side.

A Mark Van Bommel own-goal made Barca’s task a little easier before a re-taken (with yellow card in-between for a stuttered run up) Lionel Messi penalty made it two. The Argentine was then given license to provide when he threaded a pitch perfect pass through a tunnel of Milan defenders to find Xavi, giving the reigning champions the last goal needed for victory. Thirteen points in five games and Barcelona are home and hosed at top of the group.

Hulk

The Brazilian striker’s fourth goal of the campaign helped Porto to a 2-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk that subsequently knocked their hosts out of the Champions League. FC Porto are back in the picture ahead of their final home fixture at Estádio do Dragão – Zenit St Petersburg will visit needing just a draw while the Portuguese side have to win in order to qualify. Fireworks will be expected in about two weeks from now – be it on the pitch or in the skies of Portugal. With Hulk having failed to score in only one of his games so far, the smart money’s on him producing yet again.

Ioannis Fetfatzidis

Arsenal’s victory over Dortmund meant Marseille needed just a point at home to Olympiakos. Having conceded a single goal in the Champions League prior to yesterday, the scene was set for Group F to be done and dusted with one Matchday to go. The Greek visitors had other ideas, though, and with ten minutes remaining, royally upset the party when substitute Ioannis Fetfatzidis drilled home from fifteen yards out. Marseille are still in pole position for second spot, though- victory in Dortmund in the final group stage match would ensure qualification.

Marek Bakos

With Barcelona and Milan already through in Group H, BATE could have secured the third place Europa League spot with victory over Viktoria Plzen. Marek Bakos had other ideas, though, scoring his, and Plzen’s, second goal of the campaign in a 1-0 away win. If BATE fail to win in Barcelona next time round -there’s a very strong possibility this will be the case- Plzen will seal that third place.

Im pretty sure he'll start. Wenger admitted it was a mistake benching him against Stoke. Last week he also said the Premiership is our priority. RVP won't play in the CC or the last CL game so it's 1 game a week now.

    Hello!

I’ve had an disastrous first third of the season is need some advice for my future team.

    Vorm Krul
    Mertesacker Turner S.Ward Kompany Shawcross
    Formica Mata Ramsey Bale N.Dyer
    Suarez Adebayor Rooney

    Bank:1.7

For an unknown stupid reason i’ve been avoiding van Persie so far, but is it time to get him in?

I can do Suarez + Mertesacker -> Wilkinson + van Persie (no spare change)

But with uncertainty around Rooney (inj?) and van Persie (rest?) im hesitating.

    Any advices?

    Thanks…

Ignore the people saying RVP will be rested, because I really doubt he will. He played at home, and his next games at home so no travelling at all. With Carling Cup and final Champions League games coming up Arsene will be able to rest him then. I don't think he will want to rist a repeat of what happened against Stoke the last time he tried to rest him.

Suarez and Merte>Wilks and RVP looks good to me.

Thinking of shipping out Ramsey, so frustrating arsenal scoring loads each week and ramsey returning 2pts.... Options for replacement:

    a) Larsson
    b) Drenthe
    c) Sess
    d) Other mid below 7.6

    Which one do you think?

For Info my current squad is:

    Bergovic, Vorm

    Jones, Enrique, Wilkinson, Evans, Simpson

    VDV, Silva, Walters, Ramsay, Allen

    RVP, Aguero, Bendtner

I'm not saying he's the new moses... i dont think anyone will ever dissapoint the way he has!

i just think that one of the other options will score more points over the next few gameweeks.

I'm leaning towards larsson at the minute (doubling up on SUN attack!!!!!!!!) but then shipping out bendtner for Ba when newcastle's fixtures get better.

        good plan?

I'd hold on to Ramsey for now. He gets in alot of attacking positions.

On the other hand - Sess has 25(9) shots (on goal) compared to Ramsey 14(4).

Here is my current thinking for GW13:

    Ruddy
    Walker / Kompany / Naylor
    VdV / Silva / Sess / Pilkington
    RvP / Adebayor / Aguero

    Al-Habsi / Saylor / Allen / Barnett

I know the Black Cats are not scoring at the moment, but I quite fancy Sess to pick up a few points over the next 3 GWs - good fixtures...

    Vorm (Begovic)
Kompany – Brown – NTaylor (Simpson – Wilkinson)
VDV – Silva – Ramsey – Dyer (Cabaye)
Van Persie – Aguero – Adebayor

Do I hold on to my transfer this week?

I’d like to replace Begovic with Krul, but will wait til week 15 when NEW’s fixtures improve. I’d like to get Jones and/or Enrique into my defence, but Enrique has a bad fixture this week, and I’m worried Jones might be rested this weekend.

The only other transfer I’m considering is Ramsey to Walters.

What do you think of Sturridge Captain?

    Can’t see him not starting.
Drogba hasn’t done himself too many favours in these two starts, plus he got a knock.
Can’t see Anelka starting.. very likely to be Sturridge and Torres.

Only worry is he might not get a full game.

    Howard, Ruddy
    Kompany, Wilkinson, Simpson, McAuley, Boyata
    Mata, Silva, vDV, Moses, Dyer
    Sturridge, Suarez, RvP

1FT with 1.8 in the bank. Any suggestions?

Suarez, Moses and Boyata look the obvious ones. to transfer out. Suarez has improved fixtures soon though and i've already missed a CS on Boyata to Brown after having him on my watchlist over the international break so a bit reluctant to do that.

Enrique is more of an attacking threat than Kompany but City are more likely to keep a clean sheet than liverpool I think - I'd play Kompany.

It's the sort of decision that's not worth worrying about for too long because I would say they're both fairly likely to get 2.

hey guys first post so be gentle lol. basically im 150pts behind in my mini league after a disastrous start but my team is finally looking good on paper. just need a few tweaks and came across this site.

here's my squad. i still have one transfer free this week and want to take out suarez for a cheaper striker in order to bring in bale. please give me any suggestions that you think would improve my team:

    given vorm
r taylor enrique kompany p jones turner
    silva vdv ramsey walters ferguson
    adebyr suarez rvp

    thanks guys

      Welcome,

I would keep your team for this week and save the extra transfer for next week if that was me.

I think you could get Ba in next week nicely for Suarez but don't think there's any advantage to doing it this week. That would also mean you've got another transfer to play with next week - Ramsey to Bale perhaps. Ramsey could be good to have this week though.

thanks for the response. i was thinking about bale for walters after this week.

as for suarez, i was thinking about chaging him for bendnter or sturridge. as bendtner has 2 home games vs wigan and blackburn who are just awful at the back.

Yeah very true - I'd be a bit wary of Bendtner, I think I saw a stat that he has only has 11 shots this season.

Having said that, he could easily bag a couple vs Wigan and then you could get Ba straight in for him in GW 16.

Only concern with Bale is that with having VDV & Adebayor, it could be overkill ... all it takes is a spurs off day and they're all getting 2. That said, they're in great form. Personally, I'm waiting a couple of weeks and then if things are still as they are, downgrade VDV --> Bale.

Got any money in the bank?

soz for late reply mate, takes time getting used to this chat thingy lol.

tbh im a bit of a transfer muppet so i always like to make a change or two each week.

iv got 0.3m in the bank at the moment but i just think bale at 8.3m is good value at the moment especially with the ways spurs are playing and their fixtures.

iv lost patience with suarez and ar 9.5m he takes a lot of the money up.

bendtner doesnt fill me with confidence but i feel sunderland will do well in next 3-4 weeks espcially against wigan and blackburn.

how about taking out suarez for a cheap striker such as yakubu or graham and then putting in sessegnon or larsson for ferguson?

    Heya lads
Really need your help, just wondering whether you think this team needs any proper changes to it.

    Vorm(Ruddy)
    Richards Enrique Naylor (Simpson Brown)
    Bale Walters Silva Nani (Pilkington)
    RVP Klasnic Adebayor

Have 0.7 million in the bank and 2 free transfers. Any comments would be helpful!

I would have Brown in my starting XI, probably instead of Naylor. Looks a pretty good team to me - no transfers needed, which seems a bit of a waste as you'll "lose" a transfer but that's a sign of a good team! I suppose if you wanted to do something, I might look at improving Ruddy?
