The results from the first round of the Paddy Power Cup V are in, and all 512 head to heads can be viewed by clicking here. Although you undoubtedly know your own fate already, let’s have a look at how some of the other ties panned out…

Of our four previous competition winners, three progressed, with inaugural winner donnellyc crashing out in spectacular fashion 54 – 38 to kiwiphil.

Mark overcame graqfreak 57 – 48 to put himself into the next round, alongside fellow Scout greek fan. Anorak and myself gracefully bowed out, leaving just the two to fly the flag.

The top-scorer this week was Gullikgul, who annihilated Boss Hogg 85 – 38. Captain Emmanuel Adebayor and Juan Mata alone would’ve seen Gullikgul win with room to spare.

There were sixteen match-ups which ended all square, which meant overall rank had to be used to find a winner (denoted with an asterisk on the results page).

It’s impossible at this stage of the competition to find a potential winner, but there are certainly some names to avoid. The top-ranked challenger going into round two is 52nd in the world bobbyg. The only other top 100 fantasy manager in the hat is Sir Boulos (77th).

For those fortunate enough to progress this week, check back on Thursday for the second round draw. For everyone else, commiserations and thanks for participating.

I'm thinking of playing Dyer ahead of Walters if he plays Europa ... is that a correct decision??

It's a tough choice. I'd go with Walters though personally. He's a better points scorer, is on pens, set-pieces, is on better form etc....

I had Dyer and he's a bit frustrating. He'll do nothing when you play him and then score well or get some random bonus points when he's on your bench

Swansea dont seem to score that many goals..Dyer can be a good bench warmer..Ben Arfa might be a better option.

I don't think so. Walter is much potential. So far, Dyer has scored just 1 goal with zero assist.

You should fix your team link so we can see your history, since that helps us to see how risk averse you are.

From what I can see, it's a well balanced team, so I'd wait for news on VDV and if he's playing next week then you're fine, so I'd do nothing.

If he isn't then consider getting in someone for Ferg who will never play.

Winter's coming so although having Ferg was a great idea early in the season then it won't be for much longer.

There's a time and a place for lessons and this weekend is not one for Mancini. He'll stand behind Balotelli in so far as he can because he knows that as Balotelli matures(slowly) he has to take the bad with the very good.

    Kompany, Jose Enrique, Assou-Ekotto

    Sinclair, Mata, Silva, Walters

    RvP, Klasnic, Aguero

    Subs: Brown, Moses, Raylor

Do I have my subs and D sorted? Was debating starting Brown > Ekotto (due to Klasnic), maybe Raylor higher up in the subs list? Thoughts much appreciated!

But I'm lining up a Hernandez for Aguero swoop the following GW. Cant be without them for their favourable run of fixtures.

"Redknapp's dilemma over Defoe is shaped by the fitness of Rafael van der Vaart. The Dutchman did not play at West Bromwich because of hamstring trouble and, although he expects to be fit for the visit of Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, the club's medics believe his return is more likely to come the following Sunday at Stoke City." - The guardian

VDV looked pretty awful in his last two games.

I can understand the bandwagon move to Bale, who seems to be in much better form than VDV and is less injury prone.

And it's a good idea to have some cash in the bank over the winter period in case of postponed matches.

Looking to do VDV to Nani before VDV's price drops, and this for a 4 point hit :-/

(There's quite a bit of difference between FISO and TotalFPL, 103% vs 72% !!! Which to believe?)

VDV out for Bale - yes or no? Even if VDV doesn't play, I'll still have a decent sub in Dyer. I'm just worried of losing that 0.1m when VDV drops again, making it difficult to transfer him out later on.

Don't think VDV will make it this week and his price fall vs Bale's price rise should negate most of the impact over the next week or so.

Plus Bale will have an agenda after the suicide of Gary Speed, who was my hero from back in the days when I watched him playing for Leeds.

    Option 1 (Fixture-based)

    JE Baines Naylor
    VDV/Nani Silva Bale Allen
    RVP (C) Ade Ba

    JE Jones Raylor

The bait for vermalean is his scoring threat and while his presence in that backline really improves chances for clean sheets I would not be confident of getting too many. Arsenal could pull off a clean sheet this sat. but there are other options out there for less money if Jones is too rotation prone to keep

Aye, armband on RVP this week for me too.

If I'm keeping Rooney then I need to take a hit to get Bendtner out for Ade.

Head says get rid of Rooney for Adebayor this week for no hit and then do Bendtner to Ba next week.

However, heart keeps reminding me that Man Utd have great fixtures coming up and, it reasons, if I've had him this long I may as well keep him now as he's bound to hit form again in the near future.

Then head reminds me that he's done nothing for 8 gw's now and is tying up funds that could be used elsewhere.

Then heart says, yes, but the percentages say Rooney's due to come out of his slump big time any day now..............

The latest news of VDV doesn't look good.. 🙁 So, I have two plans of trade in hands.

A: Evans > Enrique or Jagielka
B: VDV > Nani or Young or Adam

    Vorm - Krul
    Richards - Brown - Simpson - Naylor - Evans
    Mata - VDV - Silva - Bale - Dyer
    Ade - Ba - RvP

I hope for some good news of VDV to come on Fri and I could do plan A. Any comment please.

    An article about Drenthe, http://www.sabotagetimes.com/football-sport/liverpool-should-read-this-before-signing-evertons-royston-drenthe/?

I'm considering transferring out this week if he doesn't start. Moyes is suggesting Bilyaletinov is going to get a run of games, and with Coleman/Fellaini/Osman in the midfield with Rodwell still to come back, I'm not sure where he's going to play.

    My list of alternatives are:

Brunt, Walters, Larsson, O'Hara amongst a few others. Food for thought.

+1 theres a reason why an attacking utd defender is 1/2m less than evra and vidic and thats because he isnt gauranteed to start

if u dont want to spend the extra cash then i think the cheapest way into utds backline is to have de gea and lindegaard as your 2 keepers and just hope utd dont miss a gameweek. or just play safe with vorm over lindegaard

He seems something of a Ferguson favourite already though and due to his versatility will probably only miss the odd game every now and again. He also has big attacking promise and people love that round here, I assume they went into the rotation risk with their eyes open.

It's similar to the Richards situation last year - some people prefer the irregular big returns to the reliable mid-size returns. Each to their own.

I should add I don't actually have Jones - I brought in Baines last week instead.

Sorry, I asked this above, but I need to get more opinions before I do this transfer. If VDV doesn't play this week, I have a decent sub in Dyer to cover him. Alternatively, I could transfer out VDV for Bale and start Bale. The question is, if VDV is only missing one week max, is it worth holding onto him or transferring him out? Keep in mind that if I do hold onto VDV, his price will drop and Bale's price will rise.

VDV has more potential to score points than Bale. He's on set-pieces, and obviously plays pretty much as a striker. However, how many matches can we expect him to start for the remainder of the season?

Bale, on the other hand, is a guaranteed starter every week, but historical data show that he is inconsistent. If I do transfer Bale in now (for a 4 point hit), I'm worried that I'm points-chasing, as his purple patch may be coming to an end.

This is why I'm having a headache over this!

My issue with Adam is that he never gets bonuses (hasn't had one singe GW3...) despite scoring a few goals and assists. In this season, that is a real deal-breaker for me. He's also only once got into double figures... not great for a 9m midfielder.

Yeah but with Liverpool starting to play more freely, we could get to see more returns from Adam. Fair point about the bonuses - obvious cos he doesn't score too many goals. I don't fancy Adam, rather prefer a Larsson/O'Hara/Walters & use the cash.

If VDV doubts continue to loom, guess I'm relatively settled on my WC team. Really fancy the rotation around this.

    Vorm
    Enrique Baines Jones
    Silva Bale O'Hara Sinclair
    RVP Ade Ba
Subs – Krul Eagles Simpson Naylor
    Bank 0

Contemplating Jones or Richards, Sinclair or Allen. Hmmmm.

How would you rate this team?

I don't really rate Sinclair or O'Hara. Allen seems a better prospect, the only real difference being Sinclair is on pens? (I havn't watched a lot of Swansea this season)

I prefer Brunt to O'Hara too, you can say he's not on form, but in his last 4 games he's played LIV, ars, TOT. And he could've had a goal against Spurs. Then he's got possibly the 2 easiest fixtures coming up in WIG and bla, and then qpr. Worth considering at least.

VDV looks unlikely to play and I dont know about Drenthe so I think I have to do VDV to Bale tonight.

can see the logic although at this stage of the season with injuries/rotation its very hard to do a 2-week transfer punt as more pressing issues will come up and u may end up regretting not having vdv in a couple of weeks time

Thats true. I could just hope the potential injury is to Silva 🙂

I'm going Adam if he's definitely out and not spending the cash so I can get him back if it looks like a good idea. Young also tempts me, I'm still unconvinced Bale will keep up assisting at this rate and I've missed a whoppng price rise and am stubborn.

I've got VDV but inclined to keep because I paid 10.5 a few weeks back.

That's probably just me doubling up on a bad bet though, as the decrease didn't happen today, so might make sense to take the hit and cut losses and bring back in a few weeks.

What's the lowdown with this Jordi Gomaz chap? 2 goals in 2 games.

Could he be good future value for a 4.9m mid I am looking for in a few weeks? Tough fixtures - prob not then,

    Edwards maybe?

Moses is the only Wigan coverage you need. 😉

Actaully, Johnson looks best option. NOR fixtures will be ok, and he plays 90 mins

      Leave Nani for now.
When he gets his form back then you can transfer him back.
Nani>Bale (Most people will suggest this).
