With so many of us awaiting details on Rafael Van der Vaart’s fitness ahead of the weekend, today’s team news from White Hart Lane was much too vague for our liking.

There was no mention of the Dutchman at all from Tottenham’s official website, though this may be down to the fact that Van der Vaart is, of course, omitted from the Europa League Group Stages squad.

The player himself has taken to twitter this afternoon and was fairly non-committal, saying nothing more than he was “working hard on fully recovering”.

In a sense, tomorrow night’s Europa League lineup against PAOK could give Fantasy managers pointers as to his availability. With Roman Pavlyuchenko a doubt for the game, Jermain Defoe’s presence in the first-team could perhaps provide a positive hint that Van der Vaart is on his way back for Saturday’s game against Bolton.

Defoe’s omission, though, could point to doubts over the Dutchman’s chances of lining up against the Trotters. Tomorrow’s teamsheet will be of plenty interest to the 14.2% of Fantasy managers currently holding Van der Vaart, with that pesky hamstring problem hanging over him once again.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

If Defoe starts at the weekend more likely Ade does well though, kind of win-win.
Although knowing this beforehand and getting Bale in for VdV would be win-win-win.

Presume Ramsey will be rested tonight for the Carling Cup? It would be awesome in a way if he wasn’t, would be easier to make the switch out this week, but for who?

    (1) Ben Arfa – having looked at his stats he doesn’t really shoot a lot, which is kind of the benefit of picking a player playing off the main striker, he is just back from injury, still playing 70 odd minutes, and despite Newcastle’s kind run of fixtures after Newcastle I am not sure I can trust him just yet;

    (2) Larsson – great fantasy player, I still remember having him when he was with Birmingham and him chipping in with points on a regular basis. He has good fixtures with Sunderland but with all this discontent with Bruce I am not sure it’s really the best time to invest.

    (3) Bale – I already have VDV, I want to keep VDV, because as soon as he is fit I know I will want him again, I also think across the season he will be more consistent than Bale. That being said, Spurs have some nice fixtures, where they should score goals, and then the double in GW20, already have Adebayor and VDV, so I am not sure I want to go “all in” on the Spurs offense.

    (4) Drenthe – Just not an option right now with injury.

    (5) ?

Any suggestions? 2.2 in the bank, VDV/Silva/Eagles/Dyer are other midfielders

Annoyingly it depends whether Lampard is on the pitch or not. When he isn't, Ramires plays in a more advanced role, and it's no coincidence that his two best games so far this season have come against Swansea and Wolves - two games where Lampard was dropped.

Was at the game on Saturday and he was absolutely incredible, so energetic and got forward to very good effect. Should be nailed on over the Xmas period.

But will he score/assist? It would be comforting to have a Chelsea player in my team, but, at 7.1 he is not a cheap player who I expect something every now and again from, will think about it, him playing more advanced based on whether Frank plays or not is concerning, Lampard will be played more often than not relegating Ramires to DM?

Not DM, that will be one of Romeu/Meireles/Mikel. Ramires will never play DM because it's such a waste of his incredible athleticism.

I wouldn't go near Ben Arfa or Drenthe atm, and I do like both Larsson and Bale. Can't really help you more I'm afraid, both good options. Think the timing is right for both, but Bale has better potential to get you a big score

Case of sitting tight then I'd guess. Cheers Sir P.

On a separate note, in a choice between getting rid of Ramsay or Walters, which would you go for? Ramsay has the better looking fixtures (although have been saying this for weeks) but on the other hand Walters is delivering on the points. Thoughts?

See above, he always gets forward, but does much so when Lampard isn't in the team - which hopefully will become more and more of a regularity.

He's had more efforts on goal than any other Chelsea midfielder this season.

I really don't think VDV will be risked at home to Bolton - unless he is 100% fit and with a good number of days of training under his belt, which is unlikely. I'm set to have him benched this week but will keep anyway, for later on and just in case.

VDV don't usually come on for 25mins. Usually when he's doubtful he starts the game, and gets subbed off after 60+. I'm keeping him unless further negative news arrives

'Arry tends to be fairly old-skool with his approach to team selection (in the PL, at least) - if you're fit enough to start and in his best XI, you start. Look at the amount of games Ledley King has played this season.

I think that it speaks volumes that Terry deliberately got a yellow against Wolves, so he would miss the Liverpool game tonight, while Lampard was apparently 'rested' so that he would be available for the game, the same game that our captain and leader deliberately misses.

Was at the game on Saturday, and the midfield functions SO much better without him in the side. The ball moves so much faster through the midfield, and they work so much harder to press in the midfield, something that is crucial when you're playing with such a high line.

Admittedly I have been saying it for ages, but Lampard really, really shouldn't be first choice in our midfield anymore. He just doesn't contribute enough.

He doesn't provide much else than goals anymore. With Mata his set pieces aren't as needed. With his age, I think he will be rotated this season.

Fair point. Who's next in line for penalties btw? Usually I've seen Drogs, but he's not certain either. If it's the likes of Mata/Sturridge their potential will be boosted greatly

Well.... the general feeling seems to be he ain't worth 12.7m in FPL then, purely because of rotation. I would honestly keep him if I thought he would play 9 out 10 games, because he naturally racks up points even when not playing well, but I can't be doing with a 12.7m regular bench warmer. It's annoying, because I spent about 4 weeks planning transfers just to get him in for Wolves(h)!! Meh.

Am happy with the majority of my team (linked to name) however I need to swap out Dzeko, Wilkinson this week, but to do that I need to downgrade De Gea…

    Options
    GK Hennesey, Krul, Howard, Schwarzer
    DEF Baines, Jags, Monk
    STR Ade, Sturridge, Aguero

But these all depend on ££ - opinions would be helpful…

    Current Team

    Foster (Vorm)
    Naylor Kompany BAE (Simpson, Wilkinson)
    Silva VDV Ramsey Walters (Ferguson)
    RVP (c) Rooney Sturridge

1 FT and £0.9m in Bank.

I bought Rooney back for £11.9m last week after ditching Suarez. I'm itching to make a transfer and tempted by Rooney > Ade.

Rooney was back to his natural position at the weekend, playing behind Hernandez but still doing plenty of work in midfield. Carrick, Fletcher and Giggs available now mean that Rooney will not HAVE to play in midfield, that is not to say he won't be dropping back, I always have my United blinkers on when it comes to having Rooney in my team, I did Rooney OUT Hernandez IN last week finally, and it paid off so far.

Jamsie- I was at the Chelsea game last Sunday vs. Liverpool and also vs. Wolves. I couldn't agree with you more about Lampard wasting space and slowing play down. He lacks creativity and just doesn't contribute enough. However, I think the more important change AVB made was replacing Mikel with Romeu. Romeu was very impressive- challenging everything and looking very confident on the ball. Mikel is Chelsea's main problem when he plays

    Open Controls

Yeah, Romeu was very impressive on Saturday. Distributes the ball much better, and much quicker, than Mikel ever does, and his reading of the game is very impressive for his age. Although his eagerness to win the ball does mean that he makes a few fouls, I thought he was going to get booked towards the end of the first half after a few fouls.

Don't think that either of our first two goals against Wolves would have happened with Lampard on the pitch. The first game directly from Ramires pressing high up the pitch, stealing the ball off Milijas and earning us a corner, from which we obviously scored. The second was from a great run in behind their midfield from Meireles, who quickly set Cole through to cross for Studge. Can't imagine Lampard doing either of those things.

I just wonder whether AVB will continue to play Romeu, especially in the harder games. I hope he does, but I'm not sure that he will.

Yeah, I think he'll slowly make his way into the team. Once Essien is fit I think he'll take the slot and Romeu will be the first alternate, pushing Mikel down in the pecking order. I think you are onto something with Ramires though- he's adjusted to the Prem this year. I remember being impressed with him for Brazil last summer and he took a little bit of time to get used to the English game. I think the signs are positive for Chelsea. Btw, do you have Mata in your team? I don't know how so many people have overlooked him!

I did have Mata for a while, but took him out as it was the only way to get Silva in my team - he'd been killing me. Took him out before the Arsenal game, doh!

I just hope it's the Essien of old that comes back, not the one from last season.

That is a real problem for Chelsea, I think they wont play Romeo for 2 years and hide hes talent. Otherwise Barca will buy him back 😀

Or we make him a crucial part of the first team, so much so that he doesn't want to go back to Barcelona to be back-up for Busquets.

JS, interesting points that you've made there.

But don't you think we should start using him how SAF used Scholesy in his last 2-3 years? He is 33 now, and shouldn't be played too often and given too many responsibilities.

Having said that, I do think we'd need his goals though. Can't expect Mata and Sturridge to keep banging them in for us week in week out. And about our forwards, well, you know.. Terry has scored more than Drogba, Torres, Anelka combined. Enough said.

Scholes has an incredible amount of natural ability though, and to be brutally honest, Lampard doesn't. He's built his career on his high levels of natural fitness, as well as his ability to burst into the box at the right time, something he can't do nearly as effectively these days.

Also, the necessity to press at United wasn't as important as it is now for Chelsea. Fletcher could do all of Scholes's running for him.

"as well as his ability to burst into the box at the right time, something he can’t do nearly as effectively these days."

I think you're underestimating Frank there. The only thing he seems to lack is the tenacity to close down the opponents midfield for the full 90. That's where he seems out of place in our midfield. Otherwise, the diagnal balls, the switching of play, the composure and that eye for goal, cannot be provided by any of our midfielders.

Only if we had bought Modric...

He was never the quickest of players, but any pace that he did have has now completely gone. Do agree that he's still capable of those diagonal balls though (his passes in behind the opposition full backs have always been the aspect of his play that impresses me the most).

Drogba looks like he might be coming back to life. Anelka is garbage, I've wanted to rid of him for years. No idea if Torres will ever re-ignite, but he showed signs earlier this year so who knows. And I think Mata will start scoring more and more goals, but his main forte is setting others up. With his service it will be hard for Drogba and Sturridge not to get on the scoresheet

By gosh you're right. Two games against Wolves and Liverpool at home provides the perfect Litmus test for your players and their varying degrees of fortune in each game.

Call me cynical, but I refuse to accept that your views are in anyway unaffected by the simple fact you lost to a superior Liverpool side 2-1, and beat a far inferior Wolves side 3-0.

      Calm down lads.

I like the fact that you are trying to support your opinions with some depth, but people need to be careful of default attitudes "we lost so they is shit" 🙁 🙁 🙁 and "we won so the players was great" 🙂 🙂 :).

My personal opinion is Lampard still has something to offer and would have surely had a good game against Wolves had he started. The whole team played very well but in the end, it was easier opposition.

Impressive Tackle I think what Jamsiep is saying is not that lamps would not have had a good game v wolves had he played but that the "whole team" might not have had a good game with Lamps in there.

I agree fully with his point though (and have done since early on in AVB's reign) so am biased.

AVB played with three cm's with big engines at Porto and none of them got many goals but because they covered so much ground it allowed the def to play a high line and squeeze the opposition and also allowed the fb's to bomb forward as their was plenty of cover with the cm's dropping in behing them. These tactics led to a lot of goals being scored (almost 3 per game avg I think) and not many conceded (less than 1 per game from memory). You would not see sturridge at fault for goals for not tracking back as hulk etc were not required to track back really it was left to the one of the cm's to cover accross.

In short lamps needs to be dropped if chelsea want to build for the furture rather than tailoring the tactics to squeeze a few more goals out of grandpa lamps' withering old legs.

Tough game, but Liverpool have been solid defensively away from home. Enrique also has some attacking threat. I'm just not too sure on Sunderland, even though they play Wolves. Not much between the three for me though, all of them can score decent points this week.
