This weekend’s home clash with Chelsea precedes a hugely promising run of four fixtures that sees Newcastle ripe for Fantasy investment….

Three home games in the next four for Blackburn has us pondering Steve Kean’s attacking assets, while Jamie O’Hara will be looking to fire Wolves up the table with a kind run of matches at Molineux on the horizon.

Our new rankings are viewable in your sidebar as ever. Read on for details of this week’s big moves.

Swansea’s sixth clean sheet of the season against Villa once again rewarded owners of Michel Vorm. The Dutchman climbs back on top of our keeper rankings, toppling Sunderland’s Kieren Westwood who failed miserably to capitalise on a home clash with lowly Wigan at the weekend and now suffers a drop as his fixtures stiffen, with three away trips in the next four gameweeks.

Newcastle’s Tim Krul and Blackburn’s Paul Robinson now occupy the top three slots – both enjoy improved fixtures, with the latter offering a good fit when it comes to alternating with the aforementioned Vorm.

Leighton Baines retains the top spot in our defender rankings, having delivered a goal, assist and a clean sheet over his last two outings. With fixtures on his side, Baines has every opportunity to go on delivering and justify his hefty price tag; with just 6.1% ownership, Baines also presents a potentially profitable differential going into the Christmas period.

Left-backs dominate our current thinking – with Jose Enrique and Ryan Taylor featuring next. Both carry attacking potential and line up in defences that are well capable of returning clean sheets in the coming gameweeks as fixtures improve for the pair.

With Phil Jones rested from the 1-1 with Newcastle, his placing in our rankings takes a dent. With very strong fixtures over the next six gameweeks, Jones holds in fourth but would have perhaps pushed up further with if his starting role had been more secure. There’s no question that coverage of the improved United defence looks desirable for the month ahead and Jones remains the best value route in to Alex Ferguson’s defence. Only Nemanja Vidic and perhaps Patrice Evra present real security.

The situation with the City defence was confused further by Vincent Kompany’s smartly taken goal at Anfield – his second of the season. Having previously failed to threaten goals from set-pieces, Kompany is now a clear menace to opposition from a dead-ball. Micah Richards, however, has his own threat at set-plays and is unquestionably more likely to offer assists, having delivered five so far this term. It’s a close call between the pair, with Kompany perhaps delivering the greater security – we go with Richards for now.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s hamstring injury has him drop from the top of our midfield rankings. There’s still uncertainty over the Dutchman’s availability for the weekend clash with Bolton and his FPL ownership has suffered as a result. Van der Vaart holds in our top five, but David Silva’s consistency has him climb to the top, with Tottenham’s Gareth Bale benefiting from four consecutive gameweeks of returns to claim second.

Chelsea’s Juan Mata delivered on his potential in the 3-0 dismantling of Wolves of the weekend – his second double figure FPL return of the season. With Frank Lampard rested to the bench, Mata succeeds the England veteran as our weapon of choice within Andre Villas-Boas’ midfield. Although fixtures stiffen badly for Chelsea in the coming weeks, this may well see attacking returns increase as the Blues are forced to retaliate against Newcastle, City and Tottenham in the next four gameweeks.

Lower down the rankings, mid-price potential is offered by Wolves’ Jamie O’Hara, Bolton’s Chris Eagles, Sunderland’s Seb Larsson and the omnipresent Jon Walters of Stoke.

Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa is perhaps the most intriguing new option here – offering out of position potential, playing up in support of Demba Ba. There will be concerns of the security of the Frenchman’s starting role once Alan Pardew’s options up front are restored, but if Ben Arfa can do enough to cement his start, at 5.4 in the FPL, he looks a strong value option.

The forward rankings see movement in the top three with Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor and United’s Javier Hernandez the men in form, with the fixtures to maintain it through December. They benefit from declining confidence in City’s Sergio Aguero who has returned 2 goals in his last seven appearances. The Argentine’s winner from the bench in last night’s Carling Cup tie issued a reminder of his qualities, and with Norwich the visitors this weekend, he remains firmly in our Fantasy plans. Both Adebayor and Hernandez have stronger form and fixtures to come however.

Newcastle’s Demba Ba and Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge both maintain high rankings with decent form – Ba in particular enjoys a big climb with his fixtures improving markedly in December.

Blackburn’s pairing of Yakubu and Junior Hoilett present budget options lower down the rankings; while Steve Kean’s side have struggled for results, goals are flowing and both players should be in line for profits from a run of three home games in four. Like Baines in defence and O’Hara in midfield, they are your December differentials for those looking to gamble in order to close a mini-league gap.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'd look at upgrading; De Laet, Ramsey, and Dyer.

Obviously not all at once, just whichever position you are in the most need.

1.8 in the bank, you could get a range of defenders at 4.5 for De Laet. Dyer could go to someone like O'Hara, Brunt, Richardson, Larsson. Same for Ramsey.

Posted this ages back but am reposting it now to see if still sounds as mad

I think the straight jacket might be about to come out, but has anyone considered picking Jones AND Smalling? Think about it, one of them is pretty much guaranteed to play every week, some weeks both might play, but if you have a GW like the one just gone for Jones you still have a United defender in (ok so I know Fab played this w/e, but only cos Smalling is not fully match fit), if you start them both and one doesn’t play you still have a sub to come in, if you bench one and pick the other you’re guaranteed at least 1 of them playing, and if neither play you should have 3 defenders capable of providing cover (mine would be BAE,Jags and Raylor)

Ok you can bring out the men in white coats now.

There is every chance that SAF plays defence below:

      Fabio Evans Vidic Evra

or Rafael could come in for Fabio or Rio could come in for Evans!

So let me tell you where i'm at....

      I'm oot!

I guess that unless you think that they will play together a lot, why spend 11ish million on a United defender when you could spend 8ish on Vidic?

ferguson syndrome, it would be 12mill for Vidic and a bench warmer. Though I do believe Evra is 7M

yes, Naylor would be only real option if one picks Vidic. Like I said it only works if you have 3 strong defenders, but I believe that Raylor, BAE and Jags could easily provide strong cover is the scenarios detailed above happen (i.e neither plays, but I believe Rio is being phased out, and Jones and Smalling both ahead of Evans)

Why are people crazy about Ben Arfa around here? I mean we don't even know if he's nailed on, once Best returns to fitness very soon.

Another Drenthe phenomenon on this forum, I suspect.

I think the obsession is similar to O'Hara, playing just off the front man, and fairly cheap in a form side. Personally, I'm definitely not crazy about him, the only viable attacking option for Newcatle at the moment is Ba. But then it's possible HBA could produce a few scores and justify people's decisions.

he seems to be being judged on his last 2 games. the first game he got injured in the first half and the second game he missed as a result.
every time i've watched everton this season when he's playing he's been the danger man and has taken almost as many set-pieces as baines.

How many goals does Lassana Diarra have? Because he played the same support/holding type of positioning when he was at Madrid. That's really an apples orange comparison...and you don't get 46 appearances for Los Merengues being a trouble maker. When you've had performances for Everton that he's has...of course I can see the love. Would I love him the same...probably not...it is Everton and it is Moyes...

Both you and 'Always Listening, Never Caring' above play the position card here which is true but only partly so, good look at the match reports at espn soccernet and you'll find that Drenthe played just as many games as left midfielder and even some as FORWARD for Real Madrid. I have followed Pardew's comments about HBA.

For a while he went with "he will have to earn his way back in" ... implying that his place in the eleven was almost an certainty eventually

when he finally played he praised him highly...

on the other hand moyes has allegedly stated something suggesting drenthe is not nailed on

i think they are somewhat similar players..

but for me ben arfa is cheaper, and plays in a side with minimum rotation. thats the deal breaker...

might do walters to drenthe later

Pardew is a big fan of Ben Arfa - I suspect he'll be a shoe in.

Demba is off to the AC of Nations soon so it'll be Best up front with Ben Arfa supporting during that time. He's showing some great sharpness and great touches. He'll definitely play this weekend with Gutierrez out and Best still injured too.

Personally, I think he's moved ahead of Best in the pecking order now too and he could even play wide right instead of Obertan with whom we hold alot of pessimism.

That's my view - season ticket holder at SJP but I could be mistaken.

I'm tempted to put ben arfa in this week for Pilkington but think I may go with O'Hara with him playing 90 mins most games.

Another good option is Cabaye but Ben Arfa seems like better value at the moment.

To summarize: Ba, Ben Arfa, S Taylor & Simpson all terrific value in my (biased) opinion.

In the few games he managed for Newcastle last season, HBA did look a class act to me. I had him pencilled in a few GW1 squads I was putting together when it was rumoured he might make the start of this season, but that didn't happen. I've skipped a lot of ridiculous bandwagons on this site, but HBA is one I'll definitely be watching closely.

    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Verm, Simpson, Enrique (Brown, Wilko)
    Drenthe, Walters, VDV, Silva (Sess)
    Ade, Dzeko, RVP

I'd like to transfer out 1/2 of Drenthe, VDV & Dzeko to make sure I get a full team playing.

I have 0.7m in the bank and 2 FT.. any ideas? Would really appreciate the input.

    Unfortunately I can't afford Dzeko/Sess (or Drenthe) > Ba/Bale.

That's what the bench is for... he could have Dyer / Brown coming in against Blackburn / Wolves. He needs an out of form Nani and Ba up against MU to both score 6pts each, just to break even over 2 subs getting 2pts.

Clearly your team doesn't need much work but a couple of things I'd be look at above. Who are you not happy with? I would suggest a Ramsey/Drenthe transfer but you may be pretty against that - views on both of these being pretty widespread on here.

He's an attack minded player, but when Wolves play 4-4-2 with Doyle and Fletcher, O'Hara has to drop deeper and this takes away much of his game, whereas if they play 4-5-1 he plays off the main striker allowing him to use his best assets, his long powerful shooting.

so you have 1.8 now and dropping Drenthe gives you 7.8? If so just get O'Hara or Ben Arfa and spend some money on your defence cos with that as your front 7, you must have a pretty cheap defence.

Where's the VDV not fit coming from? Have I missed a link?

Here's where I am: He was a doubt last week, just missed out meaning he'll be fit this weekend?

Finally got my quote off PP on Benitez next Sunderland manager - 7/1, think I'll take a punt. Completely forgot about Hughes though I'll have to email again.

Is that Rafael Benitez as next Sunderland manager? I'll literally evolve into a weird pokemon out of sheer joy if that happens

🙂 yeah. Looks to be getting some attention, although with his love for spending and Keano and Brucey's shopping sprees already gone on it's probably unlikely really

If Defoe starts tonight it would be a positive sign for VDV but i'm not convinced that if he does play tonight that means he won't play against Bolton on Saturday. Defoe could play both IMO but we'll see what 'arry has planned

I just hope he will recover in 1-2 weeks. Forcing him to play on Saturday with a chance of 6 months out doesn't look too good to me.

    Bendtner - Ba
    Ferguson - Ben Arfa

just think with the first one that I bought Bendtner because he had 4 good fixtures so I'm thinking about continuing with him to the bitter end albeit it may haunt me!
