Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Javier Hernandez is expected to be sidelined for the next four weeks with an ankle injury.

The Mexican was subbed off early in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa this evening and was stretchered from the proceedings after a lengthy delay. His goals have been crucial to the champions of late, with Hernandez scoring 3 of United’s 4 goals prior to the Villa match.

Post-match, the United boss rued the loss of his in-form striker and mulled over options for what will be a busy Christmas period:

I think it is torn ligaments in the ankle and he’ll be out for four weeks. We are having a bad time with injuries at the moment but that is why we have a strong squad. Danny Welbeck is fit again and fortunately he got 15 minutes tonight which is good. He has not had a lot of football recently which is something I have to consider. But Nani did alright through the middle and Valencia did very well for us when he came on, he was excellent. So I have some options up front. We may have Berbatov fit for Wednesday also, but we are getting our fair share of injuries at the moment.

The mention of Nani as a possibility in the central role is particularly intriguing. With Wayne Rooney’s run of goalless games now stretching to eight league fixtures on the back of tonight’s game, United are relying on their defence to ensure victories right now.

They have now ground out four 1-0 wins in the last five games since the return of Nemanja Vidic and have scored more than one goal just once in their last nine games but with a run of fixtures that includes (WOL, qpr, ful, WIG, BLA) look ripe for investment.

Welbeck, at 6.6, would be the most obvious bargain but with Fergie urging caution over his game time, the Fantasy options are low on the ground right now up front, with defence perhaps looking the most viable source of points.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Crystal ball would be so useful for this game. I held VDV and Suarez the last 2 GWs, very close to swapping them for studge&bale, but decided to refrain & have patience. Suarez better get his shooting boots on the next 5 weeks, and VDV better have his hamstring fixed also!

It's getting harder to ignore Vermaillen. 0.6 more and must be the highest points per game for a defender so far. Goalscoring threat in an attacking side and nailed on starter.

This is where those who have been shrewd in the transfer market and who now have high team values should be able to cash in. A rival of mine who has been leading me has a team value of 99.8M compared to my 106.6M which is the difference between Baines, Verm etc and Brown, Wilkinson etc. The fightback begins here.

I dont think the opposition matters t be honest with you. Verm looks like he can score against anyone.

Plus, he doesn't really get reigned in by AW, so he comes up for corners, free kicks, breakaways all the time.

Rooney needs to go to make way for him, but to be honest I have no faith in the Roonpig any more. Holding onto him the last 4 weeks has been a major reason why I've lost mini league leads and slipped down the world rankings.

ill be doing exactly the opposite. im definitely not bringing in vermaelen right now. if rooney falls once again this week, ill be able to do: aguero and sturridge > ba and rooney for free

Kaz, man, just out of interest, why the hell are you looking to get Rooney in?

Rooney owners have had enough. Since GW4 this is what Rooney's scores have been:

            4, 0 ,5, 1, 2, 2, 4, 4, 5, 2

The guy hasn't scored since GW5. During that time he's played Norwich, Stoke, Sunderland, Swansea and Villa.

Bringing him in now is the equivalent of buying Enron shares once the scandal broke out simply because they were now going cheap.

i reckon rooney's gonna earn more points than aguero in the coming weeks. chicho is out and rooney should play as the lone striker up front(or along with welbeck may be). fixtures look very tempting too

i know ill look like a dumbass if the gamble doesnt pay off but im currently lurking around that 200-400 k mark and need to start taking risks

Aguero - too much for the second best striker?
Sturridge - Chelsea have hit back to some form and he was excellent yesterday, and he hardly has shit fixtures...MCI wig tot FUL AVL wol.
Ba - why maybe? He is only 6.9 for the 5th best striker in the game, and that is after his injury/benching for the first month. Plus he has nor SWA WBA bol LIV and MUN in his next 6.

      Get Welbeck if you must.

United have never recored from that 1-6 and Rooney's confidence in front of goal is shot to pieces. Even Nani isn't putting the team on his back this season.

Unless its Phil Jones, though, I see absolutely naff all value in Man Utd players now. Regardless of the opposition they aren't putting anyone to the sword.

Took an 8 pointer this GW

Race standings B-wagon vs The Vander Van half-way through first lap

    Bale + Ben Arfa + Baines = 12 + 1 + x -8 = 5
    VDV + Drenthe + Shawcross = (1) + x + x = 1

Looks like this move might get justified right away (knock on wood)

the (1) is from NDyer coming on

That may be a one game plan also.. SAF can change the game plan pretty quickly.. he withdrew Rooney to a central role when he was scoring crazy..

My weak defence is killing me atm. I have to decide between Vermaelen and Jones

    Vorm Given
    Lescott McAuley Gabbidon Wilkinson Simpson
    Silva Bale Sess Moses Sinclair
    Ade RVP Suarez
    bank:3.5

    A.Lescott,Sess>Jones, Nani (-4)
    or
    B.Lescott, Ade>Vermaelen, Rooney (-4)

I fancy A, but I have to do it today as this move would leave me with 0.0 in the bank. Problem is that ManU has an important midweek game against Basel. Any suggestions?

Do not, I repeat, do not get Rooney.

9 games since his last goal.

How many strikers would you buy for £11.9m who hadn't scored since GW5?

Thing is I'm afraid of going without any United attacking + defensive coverage into the next GWs.
Although they are not scoring a lot of goals atm Wolves at home is as good as it gets. Can see a trashing there.

Will I get thrown out of the club if I buy a defender who costs more than 5m?

Like a few others on here I'm getting slaughtered in my mini-league* because I've resisted the charms of Jonesy, Vermy, Kompanyy and the like. The uber-cheaps are struggling yet the middies aren't taking up the slack and the forwards are very hit-and-miss right now.

*of course, I could be getting slaughtered because I'm not very good.

Hi guys, which transfers should I make next week? I've got 3.2 in the bank, and looking to get vermaelen and Mata in:

    Vorm (krul)
    Enrique, Jones, monk (RTaylor, Wilkinson)
    Nani, silva, bale, walters (dyer)
    Van persie, adebayor, ba

I've already made a sub this gameweek (ba for hernandez).

    Vermaelen for monk/Wilkinson?
    Mata for walters?
Vermaelen and Mata for nani and monk/Wilkinson? (Hit)

To everyone who is saying rooney is in bad form clearly haven't been watching the games, he's the reason united tick, it's just that he's now looking to play others in instead of shooting, i.e, he's become out of form from a FPL perspective but not a pure football perspective, just wanted to say.

Roons is keeping busy and playing well, but for that kind of corn you need returns. After seeing how many Studge could have scored yesterday for half the price of Roons. Maybe the return of Wellbeck might boost his scoring/assist potential.....

Ok.. lets be realistic, .. surely with VDV getting back into it and converting for Spurs, Bale will sort of settle the heck down...!!?? Whats with that bloke? Is he on vampire blood or something? Surely things will go back to the usual 2's from Bale with the occasional G or A thrown in.
That said, he has been 'fantastic', just wonder how the return of VDV will impact on the chemistry the team has got going at the moment..

    Foresight or a bad move?

I'd probably hold Begovic until January, as Newcastles fixtures ease up and you can play Krul until the wildcard.
Assuming STaylor is out, then he needs to go. Perhaps STaylor and VDV for Mata and whichever of Jones/Enrique you can afford?
