Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Javier Hernandez is expected to be sidelined for the next four weeks with an ankle injury.

The Mexican was subbed off early in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa this evening and was stretchered from the proceedings after a lengthy delay. His goals have been crucial to the champions of late, with Hernandez scoring 3 of United’s 4 goals prior to the Villa match.

Post-match, the United boss rued the loss of his in-form striker and mulled over options for what will be a busy Christmas period:

I think it is torn ligaments in the ankle and he’ll be out for four weeks. We are having a bad time with injuries at the moment but that is why we have a strong squad. Danny Welbeck is fit again and fortunately he got 15 minutes tonight which is good. He has not had a lot of football recently which is something I have to consider. But Nani did alright through the middle and Valencia did very well for us when he came on, he was excellent. So I have some options up front. We may have Berbatov fit for Wednesday also, but we are getting our fair share of injuries at the moment.

The mention of Nani as a possibility in the central role is particularly intriguing. With Wayne Rooney’s run of goalless games now stretching to eight league fixtures on the back of tonight’s game, United are relying on their defence to ensure victories right now.

They have now ground out four 1-0 wins in the last five games since the return of Nemanja Vidic and have scored more than one goal just once in their last nine games but with a run of fixtures that includes (WOL, qpr, ful, WIG, BLA) look ripe for investment.

Welbeck, at 6.6, would be the most obvious bargain but with Fergie urging caution over his game time, the Fantasy options are low on the ground right now up front, with defence perhaps looking the most viable source of points.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Looking at shipping out STaylor and Ramsey.

Can bring in either: Jones & Brunt (or 6m midfielder) or Verm & HBA (or 5.4m) for no hits.

Arsenal aren't as solid as United at the back, but Verm is a machine, and Jones isn't necessarily assured of a place. HBA didn't have a great game today but if he starts next week I think he'll do well.

I'd steer clear of HBA...he's not assured of another start in that same VDV positioning on the field. There will also be several changes in formation/personnel given the outcome and the numerous blown Chelsea opportunities.

2 free transfers this week and thinking Bongles/Evans to Wellbeck/Hibbert. Villa have a tough run coming up and Utd/Everton easier runs pre-festive WC. Wellbeck would be my only Utd cover. Seem sensible moves?

Chris Brunt - i've completely lost patience with him. If he fires another blank against Wigan he's cut!

..though looking at WBA's fixtures he's out soon enough anyway.

for this season it's depressingly (for you) true. long term of course you'd have to say chelsea the 'bigger' club

We'll finish above Tottenham this season, and they'll definitely win nothing, yet again.

He'll be England Manager at the Start of next Season anyway so their players will be there for the taking. Shotgun Modric!

i'd say it's pretty inevitable that tottenham beat chelsea in a few weeks thanks to a scott parker winner. 'beckford gate' last season paved the way for it

Thing is, Redknapp is such a mug that he'd probably be willingly to make a deal along those lines.

Assuming he's not in jail already.

Team starts getting a bit pint-sized with him, Mata and Ramires. Mind you Romeu looked good today and is something of a unit.

I just noticed they updated the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index on the Premier League website. You can now filter the player position like goalkeeper and it has a ranked order.

Me too sadly. Walker has been doing very well for me, it would be wrong to ditch him for a -4

I am at an absolute loss - having planned my WC team transfers quite carefully so that I would need to make the minimun of transfers until the xmas WC I find myself wanting to bring in players on a knee jerk.

Bale is good and in form but I don't want to trade out VDV

Welbeck is cheap and looks reasonably sharp but I think Rooney will play more games, is on pens etc

I need to see how Sess & Walters do tomorrow. Sess still has Blackburn at home to go and Walters is a usfull option in any situation.

Looking to xmas I had wanted to have a mis of Pilks, HBA, Silva, VDV, Rodwell so I could boost my defence.

I'm at Sea lads. Things are going ok but I feel I could be doing much much better. Rooney - Blues.

+1. They have nobody in midfield worth considering, Adam has been consistent but unspectacular. Just start Maxi!

I brought in maxi-pad last night. With Lucas out, and Carroll still not a regular starter, we're picking a front six from a rather thin selection of players. Bit of a gamble, but I think he might get some games

No doubt I'll be cursing King Kenny on Monday night though and transferring him out for Walters or some pish later on

Lucas being out doesn't help Maxi in the slightest. So nothing has really changed.

How does it not. We dont have to play the same formation every time. Things can be switched around and Maxi is versatile. At the moment, excluding Shelvey who is just for emergency cover, we are now picking 4/5 midfielders out of six FPL mids in the squad. Defo more time for Maxi

Well I was gonna bring Tim Krul in for Begovic, but am I right in thinking Saylor's injury could have a catastrophic effect on the newcastle defence?

May be so. As a Raylor owner myself, I believe his brother often save him when he wandered astray, and now he is out, it could be a very awkward situation.

Nope. Coloccini's injury is more important, imho. Even so, I bought Krul for Given.

Does anyone know what happens to tops/scarves etc that get left as tributes for folk like Gary Speed?

I often think that stuff like that and also flowers and such are a bit of a waste. I think the best thing to do would be to make donations for buying equipment etc for impoverished kids in the UK and also maybe third world countries? I think would be a more fitting tribute than having a lot of secondhand adult tops and wilting flowers just going in the bin after a week?
