[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

Differentials are by nature a risky investment, but once the December fixtures start coming thick and fast, not even the likes of Robin Van Persie are guaranteed a start. With a solid bench being a crucial factor to succeeding over the Christmas period, the Scout Selection Committee have been debating all week about the best budget options to bolster our Fantasy squads and with so many decent alternatives on offer we even managed to settle on an entirely Wigan-less selection this week……

Morten Gamst Pedersen

Following Paul Robinson’s ‘Watchlist’ article and Yakubu’s selection on the Scout Picks bench, we’re continuing our Blackburn love-in by opting for former Fantasy favourite Morten Gamst Pedersen (or MGP as he’s affectionately known around these parts) as our differential pick of the week.

Blackburn’s fixtures are about as good as you’re going to see all season. Three home games in the next four starting with the visit of Swansea this weekend makes them very difficult to ignore, and although their defence has let them down badly this season, there are still several bargains to be had amongst their attacking players.

Being consistently the highest ranked Blackburn midfielder on our Members ICT Index, and the fact he takes most of their direct free kicks and corners (of which MGP’s unique tactic of playing it to himself resulted in their goal against Wigan), the Norwegian international should prove to be a solid investment over the coming weeks. Who knows, with Scott Dann and Chris Samba back in the side, Blackburn may even win a game or two.

Hatem Ben Arfa

Playing as a withdrawn striker in place of the injured Leon Best, Hatem Ben Arfa has looked very promising since his return from injury and with Newcastle approaching their best run of fixtures of the season so far, the French star could prove to be a bargain. Best has been confirmed as fit for this weekend’s game against Chelsea, but Newcastle will be expected to stick to the formation that served them so well at Old Trafford last week. With Jonas Gutierrez suspended then a shift to the wing is also a possibility but, regardless of where he plays, Ben Arfa looks capable of bringing home the points.

Chelsea at home isn’t the easiest fixture but there has probably never been a better time to face Villas-Boas’ men. While the Londoners are still reeling from their third defeat in four games against Liverpool on Tuesday, Newcastle are riding a wave of confidence summed up quite optimistically by Ben Arfa’s recent claims that they were going to win the league (Paddy Power will give you 300-1 if you fancy that one by the way!). Fixtures ease up considerably after this with Norwich, Swansea, West Brom and Bolton in the next four but with a current ownership of 1.0% and priced at just 5.4, it could be worth jumping on board a week early.

Nicky Shorey

Clean sheets have been notoriously hard to come by this season so when looking for a budget defender, a decent chance of an attacking return is essential. Under Roy Hodgson this season, not only are West Brom looking a lot more solid at the back, but Nicky Shorey has been a constant threat on the break. His recent spell on the bench raises a few concerns about his long term role in the side, but it’s hard to see him being dropped again after his last two performances, and priced at just 4.5 he looks the pick of the West Brom defenders right now.

The stats backs this up; Shorey has been the most creative defender on show over the last two gameweeks, surpassing even Everton’s Leighton Baines when it comes to supplying opportunities and crosses.

No real 'good' options now that Raylor/Simpson/Naylor etc have all risen..you pay for what you get now really.
      Wilkinson/McAuley probably best options..

rvp about 35% and id say 90% of those will captain him. If i had alot of ground to make up i would go with the obvious captain and look for the cheap/mid price diff and try to chip away at the leaders instead of looking for the quick catch up which is risky IMO

I totally agree. At this point in the season you should be looking to captain the player who you think will get the most points and, by and large, ignore the captain choices of your rivals. Unless you think there is so little to choose between 2 options and your chasing a lead, at which point you may as well go for the player your rival doesn't have. But otherwise, I'd just concentrate on picking the best players you can each week.

Hey everyone, reckon Spurs will score more than Arsenal but captaining RVP anyway because Spurs goals can come from anywhere. Also playing it safe cause I'm betting my left nut the 33% owners of RVP will captain him as well.

Clearly the question of the day - who to captain.

Spurs and City have great fixtures - bringing Adebayor, VdV, Silva and Aguero to the fore, RvP is RvP and there's always Baines for those that have him

Me - I have all of those except Aguero, and I'm still deciding (currently on Adebayor with Silva (v) although it was the other way about 5 minutes ago...)

I think the logic behind RvP as captain (who I've gone for) is if Arsenal win 4-0, he's likely to get at least 2 of those, and play a part in the others. If Tottenham win 4-0, it's very possibly Ade could get 2 points. Same with Aguero and Silva.

He is my vice captain, just feel its a bit trickier to predict who will score points for spurs with Ade VDV and Bale plus he will be off pens.

The problem this week is there are too many good captain choices.....when in doubt give it to RVP rarely disapoints

Between Vorm and Robinson its gotta be Vorm imo. You can play him every week until the next wildcard except probably gw19 vs Spurs. Price is still rising too so you can make profit.

I'd really like to captain Baines but I'm at Etihad later with Andy (comped hospitality - thanks FPL!) and he's bound to captain Silva, so I might be forced to go with Aguero to make it more interesting. Gone against my gut too many times this season though, and seem to fail miserably each time.....

In fact, going against my gut usually means 'doing something different to Andy'. Taking rivalries out of it, who's the smart choice do you reckon - Baines or Aguero?

The smart choice is Aguero in this case.

Aguero is as likely to score 10+ starting or coming off the bench.

Baines, I'd be happy to get 8/9 points from him today (CS and assist, or goal and concede)

I am stuck with who to captain (like a lot of people it seems)...
Head says RVP - Heart says Adyebayor

RMT please with any suggestions or Cpt choices. 0.2mil in bank

    Vorm (Given)
Terry, Jones, Enrique (Simpson, Taylor swans)
    Eagles, Ramsey, Silva, Bale (Ferg)
    Adebayor (v), Aguero, RVP (c)

team looks good. i'd say you probably want to downgrade terry to one of verm, richards, and kompany and use that money to upgrade ferg. rest of team looks good.

captain would have to be one of bale, adebayor, aguero and rvp and silva. have the same dilema myself cept have vdv instead of bale. would say silva is a safe bet but probably not as likely to be explosive. aguero i'm thinking is a big risk but could score really big. adebayor i see having a chance to draw a blank but also a chance to bag one or two but maybe not as explosive as ageuro this week. and then theres rvp. thsi dilema is blowing my mind

if your heart says it then go with adebayor. going with my heart has turned out quite well for me on several occasions. one week, 1 min before the deadline i changed my captain to bos. ended up having a dreadful week and he ended up being my top scorer (precaptain) with 8 or 9 which ended up making my week not quite as terrible

best of luck to you mate! and sorry didn't mean to write thsi much haha

My team for this week - ok, or does it need tweaking?

    Krul

    Kompany - Jones - Enrique

    Ramsey - Brunt - Bale - Silva

Van Persie - Rooney - Adebayor

Subs - Vorn, R Taylor, Taylor, Ferguson

If Rooney does nothing this weekend I think Ill drop him for Ba, and Id like to squeeze Mata in there also.

Its a toss-up between Krul and Vorm, Im swaying towards Krul as even if they do concede (I think both will) Krul might be more likely to get save points.

defo not - last season when he went through a spell like this he went off in the first half when the injury flared again.
He was only getting 60-70 minutes anyway and Bale/Ade so strong, he will come off either first half injured or second half at 60 mins.....

    Vorm

    Silva, VDV, Sessegnon, Ramsey
    RVP (C), Adebayor (VC), Bendtner

(Al Habsi, 1 Walters, 2 Brown, 3 Shawcross)

Any suggestions on who to play from the bench instead of....? Tempted to captain Adebayor or VDV. I guess RVP is playing it safe….
