Harry Redknapp reveals he’ll continue to protect Rafael Van der Vaart’s problematic hamstring. Phil Jones admits he’s happy to play anywhere for Man United, while Robin Van Persie is rested for Arsenal’s trip to Olympiacos this week.

Harry Redknapp has given Fantasy managers plenty to ponder after admitting he will continue to be cautious over the Dutchman’s ongoing hamstring problem. Van der Vaart was handed a late second half sub role in the 3-0 win over Bolton, with Jermain Defoe vindicating his manager’s decision with a goal and assist in the stroll. With a busy upcoming Christmas schedule on the cards, Redknapp revealed Defoe’s form made the decision a less-difficult one than anticipated:

He’s disappointed, obviously, but he took it okay. It was a hard decision. I just felt the little man (Defoe) is on fire so I stuck with him. I like Rafa, he’s a great player, a good pro, but he keeps getting hamstrings. You’ve just got to be careful he doesn’t tear it and we lose him for six weeks.

Arsene Wenger gave Robin Van Persie’s Fantasy owners a boost this afternoon after omitting his skipper from the Champions League trip to Olympiacos. With the Gunners already through as group winners, Wenger can afford to rest and rotate ahead of the weekend league game against Everton. Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott, Gervinho and Mikel Arteta were also amongst the names left behind.

Having missed the previous week’s home clash with Newcastle, Phil Jones came straight back into the Man United starting lineup at Aston Villa with a bang, scoring the game’s only goal. Jones’ versatility is making him a major Fantasy asset so far this season, with the Newcastle game his only league absence and the player admits he doesn’t mind where Sir Alex Ferguson fields him at the moment:

I enjoy playing anywhere. I enjoy playing football, so wherever I am asked to play I will play. If the manager asks me to play right-back, centre-back or midfield, I will go and do a job there. I don’t think it really matters at the moment that I am cementing a spot in a certain position because I am still young. Hopefully as my career progresses that will happen.

Man City coach David Platt reckons the new summer additions mean it’s impossible for the side to produce the same type of defensive displays they have managed in the past. City have failed to return a clean sheet in seven successive league games now- compare that to last season, when Joe Hart picked up the Golden Gloves award for 18 clean sheets. Platt admits it’s no longer in their makeup to do so:

When we beat Spurs at White Hart Lane and United went out and put eight past Arsenal, Roberto told the players that we can’t take our foot off the pedal. We should go on and keep scoring. Last year we did not have the characteristics of the players that we do now. What Roberto has done this year is that he has gone on and added to it with Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri. Edin Dzeko also came in during January. We have got the type of players on the field which mean we cannot actually play defensively because of the characteristics of the players. We don’t really have a choice.

Alan Pardew is hoping to accelerate Mike Williamson’s return to action due to the number of injuries currently affecting the Newcastle defence. With Steven Taylor possibly out for the season and Fabricio Coloccini suffering from a thigh problem, Pardew confirmed that James Perch will start at Norwich this weekend as he looks to patch up his threadbare back-four, but admitted Williamson is not yet ready to return to the first-team fray just yet:

He’s going to need a lot of work on the training ground to get himself up to speed, but we might have to accelerate that. He’s not that close – he’s definitely not playing at Norwich, or maybe the one after that. We’re going to have to see if we can speed him up a bit.

Alex McLeish has called for Charles N’Zogbia to step up in performance after fining and dropping the player for a breach of club discipline at the weekend. N’Zogbia failed to report for treatment in the lead up to Saturday’s home game with Man United and Big Eck admits he need an improvement from the former Latics winger, with Villa recording a single win in their last seven fixtures:

He has to take it on the chin and show us the great player he can be. There are no grudges. I just want to see the boy go to another level. I think he can improve on what he has done before. We are looking to guys like Charles to come to the fore. Charles has got to be receptive and realise I want to help him and every single player at this club because we need all the help we can get.

Roy Hodgson kept with his recent 4-4-1-1 formation for the trip to QPR, despite the loss of Zoltan Gera. Graham Dorrans stepped into the role “in the hole”, tucking in behind Shane Long for the Loftus Road encounter and has designs on keeping his place in the Baggies first XI ahead of this weekend’s home clash with Wigan.

Wolves’ win over Sunderland saw Mick McCarthy revert to a 4-4-2 once again, with Jamie O’Hara moving back into a central midfield role. Steven Fletcher and Kevin Doyle led the line and although O’Hara picked up a somewhat contentious assist, his attacking threat was once again reduced from a less-advanced position. With home games against Stoke and Norwich to follow next weekend’s trip to Old Trafford, O’Hara’s Fantasy owners will be desperate for a change of heart from Big Mick.

Robert Huth returned to the centre of defence for only the third time this season and reminded Tony Pulis of his potential at both ends of the pitch. Pulis has mainly fielded the German at right-back this term but picked Jonathan Woodgate at full-back for the trip to Everton, moving Huth back into the heart of the back-four. Huth’s match-winner at Goodison, combined with Stoke’s first clean sheet since gameweek 8, will have given his manager plenty food for thought ahead of the upcoming home clash with Spurs. Pulis also revealed that Thomas Sorensen suffered only mild concussion after being taken from the field of play in the seventy-second minute.

Jose Bosingwa missed training today ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Valencia due to an adductor strain. The right-back has fallen out of favour and with Andre Villas-Boas’ side picking up 3 clean sheets in four league games since his omission from the first team, was unlikely to play anyway, with the London club requiring a goalless draw or win to ensure qualification for the knockout stages.

Owen Coyle has confirmed Bolton will appeal the red card that saw Gary Cahill depart the proceedings in the first half at Tottenham on Saturday. The decision of Stuart Attwell to dismiss the centre half left many baffled, with Cahill deemed to have denied Scott Parker a clear goalscoring opportunity despite the Spurs midfielder being more than forty yards from goal. Cahill will currently miss the weekend clash against Aston Villa but his manager is confident the FA will overturn a decision he described as “bemusing”.

Boring post lost at the bottom of the last page...

    Current team

    Vorm (Given)
    Jones Santos Walker (Enrique Simpson)
    Silva VDV Walters Drenthe (Dyer)
    RVP Ba Adebayor

    1.3m in the bank.

This week VDV to Bale and Santos to Smalling

Next week Given to Ruddy and Drenthe to Nani.

    What do we think?

Yup but he's not likely to come on later on in games. And I have 3 other good defenders so it doesn't matter if I play him and he doesn't play.

Or maybe just do VDV to Nani this week and get Bale in next week. Problem is Bale is likely to rise more than Nani is going to.

Which doesn't matter because Nani costs more anyway.

Worrying about price rises really gets you nowhere.

Also I'd definitely play Enrique at home to QPR rather than having three players in spurs/stoke.

Bale is cheaper than Nani yes but I want both and with the hits I've lined up I only have 0.2m to spare so there's no harm in "worrying" about price rises.

Ignore the Enrique as sub, that was just showing my team really, I'll be playing him 🙂

      Keep Santos this week.

I'd save the transfer or if you're keen to get rid of VDV then just do that one.

Not really that keen to get rid but Bale offers more upgrades and none of my rivals have VDV anyway which works 2 ways

        1) he could be a great differential
        2) I'm not losing anything by getting rid

    Weird stat:

    Last 8 weeks I've taken a hit 4 times ... I know, I'm a bad man.

Those 4 times I've had green arrows. The other 4 weeks? Red arrows.

Plan for this week - take a hit. Shouldn't have got pissed and done it before the champions league mind.

Thing is, we don't really have a defence now, particularly if Coloccini is out so we can't just park the bus - he's going to have to go for it a bit I think - part of the reason I've put Demba in. I would be wary of playing any Newcastle defender at the moment though.

Saying that, we played pretty well against Chelsea from where I was sitting and 3-0 was generous. If we'd made it 1-1 when Shola/Droga hit the bar, it would have been a very nervous last 15 mins for them ... 1-1 was probably a fair result.

I think we'll have enough of the ball at home to Swansea and West Brom for the defence to get by but I think there'll be goals at Norwich ... I can see that being 2-2.

That's my thinking too. Goals are the only way the Toons might be able to get out of this situation until Colo is back.

1-1. Haha that's highly biased IMO. As a chelsea fan, I could easily say Studge should have had 3-4 goals but was unlucky & krul lucky 😛

Hmmm perhaps ... Krul played well but we still hit the woodwork 3 times, had 1 cleared off the line ... Luiz v nearly scored an own goal and should have been sent off anyway!

But yes, I do acknowledge I'm biased!

With RVP being captain material week in week out i find it point;ess having expensive forwards and mids aprt from the usual Silva, Bale, Adebayor.. RVP has made it possible for us to find value in the likes of Vidic etc which would'nt have been possible with the captain choices available b4.. So i think it's time for ppl to rethink their strategies.. For eg in the next 5 games Vidic has the opportunity to easily outscore Nani.. What made Nani a good option b4 was the ability to captain him vs wolves at home., with rvp stealin the armband every week the luxury of an average 6 points a week from Vidic over the next 5 weeks at 2 million less is brilliant imo.. just sayin

Not convinced. it's not just about the captain's choice. IMO midfielders/strikers have a much much greater potential to get double figures in a good fixture rather than defenders (Baines in an in-form Eve an exception).

But I see where you're coming from. If you like playing safe, it's good to have a nailed-on United defender.

that's what i mean.. in a good fixture.. over a period of 6 games though the totals are similar.. b4 we'd prob have thought of captainin the midfielder/striker in said good game.. but with rvp we wont do that.. so overall it evens out.. only an expensive defender is much cheaper than an expensive attacker

Messi forces Guardiola to play him because he wants to be the top scorer in every competition. Ronaldo does too but doesn't have the influence over his manager Messi does. Both will want to play, but bearing in mind their next league game, I think their managers might just convince them to let him rest their best and most important player. Both may feature just to get a goal or two, but no way will they both play 90.

I agree with you about Chelsea no way have they turned a corner so to speak how many chances did Newcastle create and lets be fair about it possibly deserved a draw if not the win teams are creating a lot of chances against Chelsea un like previous years under Jose and Ancoletti so do n't go overboard on Chelsea players YET!!!

It's too easy in FPL to get attached to someone...

      Sturridge - CITY, wig, tot
      Ba - nor, SWA, WBA

Personally feel Ba could double Sturridge's points over the next 3 games.

Would be more inclined to agree with JIMNASTIC point as I was a non-BA-believer but I am being convertd to a BA-liever (see what I did there) as he is a handful and nuisence around the pitch and he seems to be a godd header of a ball now that Newcastle have some decent width to deliver .

    Team is:

    Krul/Ruddy
    Kompany/Simpson/Enrique/Shawcross/Orr
    Silva/Ramsey/Bale/Dyer/Allen

    Current team:

    Foster (Vorm)
Kompany Naylor BAE (Simpson , Wilkinson)
    VDV Silva Ramsey Walters (ferguson)
    RVP Rooney Sturridge

    2FT and £0.9m in Bank.

Thinking of VDV > Bale and Kompany > Vidic

It is quite important for a striker to score goals though - especially if your team isn't scoring that many. He's not being unselfish and setting up loads of chances for other people too - he's being selfish and wasteful with his shots.

The farther up the rankings you get the more chance of a tumble, even with an above average score. Perhaps some of the posters who have been top 10k could give you some tips on how to stay there, but I'd say decent differentials are the obvious answer.

If your gameweek rank (so far) is about 1 million you can't really expect to stay in the top 6000 can you?

    VdV -> Nani?

I already have Adebayor from Spurs. Nani doesn't necessairly have to be long-term but it would make sense to get some Man Utd cover for this GW at least?

Bayern Munich are 4/1 to beat City. Not saying that they will, but that is a great price.

All depends on Robbery, can't see them being played, but if they are, Bayern will win. If not, which I think will be the case given that they're through and need to focus on the league, City have a very good chance.

Hi all, could really use some advice on my team for next gw. Currently:

    Vorm
    Enrique Baines Jones
    Silva VDV Bale Walters
    RVP Sturridge Ade
    (subs: Krul, Naylor, Dyer, Simpson)

    Am tempted to do:
    1) Baines > Vidic (double up on Utd defenders and bring Baines back for gw20)
    2) VDV > Nani (can't keep gambling on the fitness of a 10m player).

I would do both if you could afford it?

I've got Vidic and Jones. Proving to be a very successful combo of late.

I can afford doing both, but been taking a lot of 4 point hits lately

    Bendtner out for Welbeck/Sturridge?

    Which would you go for?

Can you afford Ba? I have Sturridge, but if I had 2 transfers one of them would be to swap Sturridge for Ba (I don't though, so will probably stick with what I've got)
