The curtain falls on another gameweek, leaving us to consider the services of a reborn Fantasy force, the shape-shifting goal power of Roberto Mancini’s title challengers and the merits of ousting a Dutch master…

The Player

Yakubu single-handedly carried Blackburn to three precious points against Swansea. A smart side-foot finish, two close range headers and a spot-kick completed a one-man destruction of the slick-passing Welshmen. It also put Fantasy managers on full alert to the potential of the Rovers striker.

We’ve long been discussing the potential of the revitalised Nigerian. Back in early November we unveiled an impressive shot per minute ratio – bettered only by Demba Ba amongst our analysis of the sub 7.5 FPL strikers. Two weeks later, we acknowledged Yakubu’s rise in our Watchlist prior to gameweek 13 trip to Stoke. While that encounter saw him draw a blank in a disappointing Rovers showing, a week later Yakubu took his goal tally for the season to 9, putting him on a par with Wayne Rooney and Ba.

There will of course be an influx of investment following such a major points haul. Already Yakubu has seen a price rise to 5.6, as thousands look to bring the budget option into their frontline; without doubt, Yakubu’s bandwagon is on the move.

Can it keep rolling? Looking at his form and fixtures, you’d have to say the omens look good. Rovers have a trip to struggling Sunderland next, having scored in every single away game so far this season. After that, Steve Kean’s side face both West Brom and Bolton at Ewood – both beatable, both unlikely to halt a Rovers attack that has scored 11 goals in their last 5. Yakubu looks well placed for a festive feast.

The Team

While Tottenham’s usual suspects put up another vibrant display against 10-man Bolton, Man City spread five goals throughout their lineup against a Norwich side caught in the headlights of their title charge.

It’s been a while since we switched our attention to Roberto Mancini’s outfit and, though many will point to the 5-1 win over Norwich as a flattering scoreline, there’s no denying the efficiency displayed in humbling Paul Lambert’s side, who have previously shown such determination in trips to Anfield, Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford this season. Against City however, the gulf in class became glaringly obvious – Norwich could not repel the waves of attacking talent in City’s armoury.

The goals came from Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri, Yaya Toure, Mario Balotelli and Adam Johnson. David Silva and Edin Dzeko had to be content with an assist, Micah Richards, Vincent Kompany also got in on the act. That’s nine names sharing the Fantasy spoils – emphasing not only how goals flow throughout the side, but also how difficult it’s become for Fantasy managers to isolate a secure source of points within Mancini’s shuffling lineup.

Owned by a third of FPL managers, Aguero is proving the ultimate frustration – doing just enough to warrant holding him, without delivering the kind of explosive returns we saw earlier in the season, or indeed that we’ve seen of late from Robin Van Persie.

Aguero’s goal was his third in six league matches – he’s started all six but has been subbed in each one. Dzeko has four goals over the same spell, but has started just two matches. Balotelli meanwhile, also has four goals over the last six gameweeks, again starting two.

Aguero ownership and FPL price tag has held firm but, when you consider that the Argentine has returned fewer goals than the other City strikers and is priced almost 3.0 more, there’s reason to start fidgeting and considering the options elsewhere. Aguero needs to deliver a brace or more before Christmas, otherwise his ownership and price could come down with the decorations.

The Talking Point

Tottenham have been a “Digest” regular in recent weeks, with Gareth Bale, Emmanuel Adeabyor and Rafael Van der Vaart staple ingredients in the gameweek round-up. Once again it’s Spurs, and in particular Van der Vaart, who are at the centre of the main issue troubling Fantasy managers this week.

Having made a satisfactory recovery from a hamstring injury, Van der Vaart found himself confined to bench duty for the 3-0 win over Bolton, emerging to replace the zesty Aaaron Lennon late on. While the Dutchman sat in reserve, Lennon and the frighteningly consistent Bale, tore up the Bolton defence and laid further claims for slots in our Fantasy squads. Jeramain Defoe took up Van der Vaart’s place and scored again – making Harry Redknapp’s team-sheet headache that little more intense.

Bale’s form is a force of nature with few defences able to withstand his pace and power. He has become a priority target in the Spurs lineup, a status only boosted by this recent turn in fortunes for Van der Vaart. Lennon too, for a player available for just 7.2 in the FPL, will surely attract further interest from those looking to maximise their allocation of Tottenham’s attacking players.

This all leaves Van der Vaart’s future in our Fantasy squads as far from certain. We’re seeing heavy FPL sales and, as Nani hints at emerging from a recent slump to help inspire United over a run of favourable games, there is a clearly defined exit route outside of Harry’s squad.

It’s now a question of timing. Do we hold Van der Vaart and wait to see what Harry conjurs up with his lineup at Stoke, or take him on his word and decide that Van der Vaart’s hamstring will indeed be wrapped in cotton wool over the busy Christmas period.

Tottenham’s performance against Bolton would suggest that Harry can afford to keep the Dutchman preserved, but shedding one of the Premier League’s biggest Fantasy damage dealers is never going to feel comfortable, regardless of the logic behind it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Apologies if already posted:

Can read that one of 2 ways:

    1) He is happy to be a sub.

    2) He accepts he only trained one with the team last week but would be disappointed if he didn't play this week.

I've only just realised that Defoe will play 90 against Shamrock Rovers which is a must-win (sort of) game for Spurs - think this increases VdV's chances for this weekend significantly.

Back to my boring transfer again.

It's definitely option number 2. He wrote in dutch on his own site and they translated it obviously, but from his dutch it's clear he understood he was on the bench because he only trained once. He's almost 100% fit (not up to 100%, whatever that would mean) and hopes to be starting again next week.

Got lost on last page - Would appreciate some help, current team is

    Vorm FUL (H)

    Simpson NOR (A) / Taylor FUL (H) / Jones WOL (H) / Assou-Ekotto STO (A)

    Bale STO (A) / Nani WOL (H) / Silva CHE (A)

    Van Persie EVE (H) / Adebayor STO (A) / Bendtner BLA (H)

    Bench: Given, Drenthe, Dyer, Hibbert

Got 1FT and 0.6m in the bank.

Plan to keep bendy for this week then ship him out for ba next week.

    Looking at transferring:

    1. given – could drop again due to injury and his replacement would avoid doubling up on swansea defs this week.

    2. drenthe – not sure if injured or fallen out with DM, think he will come good and has a potential DGW (if he starts) so uncertain of transferring him out

Or could just play the team above, and roll the transfer over, thoughts?

You could fare well this gameweek with your current team, but there always players which can be reevaluated.

With Given out until January, getting a replacement for him would be an obvious measure. By playing Vorm this weekend, you can get Howard in next, or maybe look into Foster, Scwharzer or someone else.

Also, with Everton's upcoming fixtures and a DGW, I would be wary of transfering out Drenthe, he must come good some day. I wouldn't keep hold to Bendtner any more if he doesn't put a few behind Robinson this weekend, Ba's fixtures are too good to be ignored, and a lot of other cheap strickers are hitting their top form at the moment (Yakubu, Helguson etc...)

I actually remember my team pretty well.

Towards the end of last season I had a team with a frontline of RVP, Odemwingie, Ba and I had a midfield of VDV, N'Zogbia, Young and Adam. My backline also had Baines, Huth and Hangelaand.

One sunday I remember Ba and N'Zogbia scoring a bucketload each, really was a defining weekend for me on my push to 14th.

There were also distinctive points in the seasons where I had the likes of Bale and Nasri who shone but were shipped.

They've been very impressive on home turf. I'd happily play the double-up until such times that their form really flops, but Rogers (Rodgers?) has built a pretty solid back line, and they don't give up possession easily either.

dont like kompany vs chelsea and arsenal ,agonised over rooney ,had him up to 2 weeks ago,hes back ,wolves at home ,qpr away ,gonna be captain gw 16....i reckon hell play up top and start firing again ,anyway hes got 2 weeks ...come on piggy...

I couldn't go back to Rooney until I see him actually do something. It's been weeks since he has, weeks. I rather wait, miss a couple of goals/assists, then buy him, but not until he does.

Kompany to Vermaelan looks reasonably sensible, I suppose, but I'd look at Ba, Ade, Welbeck for Hernandez.

A plenty on too. Let me ask you Ballur, in that game, who looked most likely to score throughout; Drogs or Studge? For me, it was Studge all over, he could have had a hat-trick where it not for Krul's excellence.

    VDV Walters Silva Ramsey (Ferg)

    Hernandez Adebayor RVP

It's pretty consistent in my opinion. Granville got it spot on in one of the podcasts, Strikers only get 4pts for a goal and 3 for an assist. The gap doesn't seem big enough. The new bonus point system fixes that.

I'm sorry mate but for me scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win deserves some recognition in the BPs and I don't even own Dempsey.

I understand the complaints about scorers already getting their points and therefore BPs being used for other non-scoring but impressive performances. However that is simply not the case with this current PPI system. I wish it was that way but it really isn't...

There is clearly a rule here...

Score and you will get extra bonus unless you hit a few shots off target.

Seems crazy to be planning a 4pt hit and not even sorting your keeper situation out. Without seeing your team it's hard to say if the 4pt hit is necessary (the two players you are getting rid of are hardly duffers). But without seeing your team I'd say that you definitely need a new keeper as your number 1 priority

Will RVP be rested over Xmas?

    Dec
18 Sun Barclays Premier League A Manchester City 16:10
21 Wed Barclays Premier League A Aston Villa 19:45
    26 Mon Barclays Premier League H Wolverhampton W. 15:00
31 Sat Barclays Premier League H QPR 15:00
    Jan
    02 Mon Barclays Premier League A Fulham 17:30 SS1

It would look like the QPR game would be the prime candidate for a rest? Fulham away 2 days after would seem that he would be more essential for start than QPR at home? Speculation is that the Wolves game is the most likely for a break but he has plenty of time to recover after Villa!

Wouldn't be too surprised if he starts on the bench for one of those easy home games. Wenger will be wrapping him up in cotton wool any chance he can get as they're cooked without him. I would imagine that Arsenal should have enough firepower against Wolves and QPR at home.

Pure speculation on my part though.
