Sir Alex Ferguson has this morning ruled Nemanja Vidic out for the season with a knee injury.

The United skipper was stretchered off in Wednesday’s Champions League defeat in Basel and the injury, admittedly, did look a nasty one to those watching on.

At this morning’s press conference ahead of the home clash with Wolves, Ferguson revealed:

“It’s not unexpected but it’s still bad news. We thought it was a bad one and unfortunately he’s out for the season. He sees the specialist on Monday to work out the progress of when he has his operation. It won’t be immediately as we have to let the swelling come down. It’s a blow.”

There’s no denying Vidic’s loss is a massive blow to United’s title challenge. A 6-1 defeat at home to neighbours City forced Ferguson to go back to basics in gameweek 10. A run of 4 clean sheets in the following five fixtures coincided with his captain’s return from a calf problem and despite scoring just a single goal in each of their last seven games, United have been able to stay within touching distance of City at the summit.

Their defensive form, allied with a favourable run of upcoming fixtures, has seen many draft in members of the United back line, with Phil Jones, in particular, seeing plenty of Fantasy investment. While faith in the United defence will have been somewhat diminished by this news and transfer plans adjusted, there will still be plenty willing to reconsider alternatives.

With Rio Ferdinand established as a regular in the heart of defence once again, Fantasy managers will be hoping Jonny Evans comes to the fore, given the Irishman’s 4.4 price. Vidic’s loss is likely to lessen their stability at the back to a certain degree and Evans, therefore, would not be much of a risk at that budget price. He played in nine of United’s first team fixtures, picking up four clean sheets.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones also stand out, at 5.2 and 6.4 respectively, and offer more adaptability than Evans. Both have already played at right-back and centre half, with Jones’ central midfield duties also in his locker and may offer the greatest chance of game time over what is set to be a hectic festive period.

I've had Jones for a couple of weeks now (bought him for 6m) and got Smalling in for 5.2m on Monday for S Taylor. Plan on playing them both every week now until the Jan wildcard. Anyone with me?

They'll do well keep any clean sheets without vidic.

In my opinion that's too many eggs in a slightly shaky basket, traditionally it seems Utd don't keep anything like as many cleanies without Vidicm, and Smalling might also be a slight rotation risk.

Agreed, it's never great to put all your eggs in one basket. But having two utd defenders is like putting your eggs in a basket which is hanging precariously from a thin branch in the wind

I think they will still keep a fair few clean sheets, tbh.

Yes it is so easy to over look the efforts of a deep playing midfielder who could pick the odd pass, I think UTD need Anderson and Cleverly back more than Vida and Hernandez, but those two new injuries is just rubbing salt in the wound

Vidic and Hernandez were the reason they were winning games.

Vidic would be instrumental in utd keeping a clean sheet then hernandez would pop up with one goal e.g. everton and swansea

It's time for Rooney, Young and Nani to rediscover some form. The most important players now is Rio, he's got to stay fit and marshall the young uns, otherwise we're going to need to score 3 goals a game.

      Doubt it.

No idea what the Glazers are like about the money nor will anyone on this forum.

It's a pity. The last time we signed anyone signifcant in January was when we signed Vidic and Evra.... and if my memory serves me correct that was following a group stage exit in the UCL.... a few good omens perhaps.

Saha was a reasonably bold winter buy also. I can't see Fergie buying anyone until Summer though which is a shame (it is very hard to find value mid season as prices are usually inflated).

Fulham poor travellers, only grabbing away goals to Wigan, Newcastle and an OG against Arsenal and Blackburn are scoring for fun.

For everybody saying United won't keep clean sheets without Vidic - the 8 games he was missing this season they still kept 3 clean sheets. These 8 fixtures included all 5 of the other top 6 teams. Of the "easier" fixtures of this bunch which were Norwich, Bolton and Stoke they conceded just one goal.

Does everyone agree with this weeks FFS bandwagons?,
could it even be narrowed down to 2 or 3, and if so who to drop?

    FFS Bandwagons of the week

    Ba, Jones, Yak, Nani

Notable omissions: Vermaelin, Mata, Bale(most people have him by now)

    GW14: Ade, Bale, Baines

I think after this week the Mata bandwagon will be rolling, and after GW16 the Vermaelen bandwagon will join it.

Ba & Yak are very short term and Jones should really have been brought in weeks ago.
Nani is a punt as United aren't scoring enough.

So for me, apart from Jones, I'm not tempted by the other 3.

Vidic and Vermaelen were big bandwagons earlier in the week.

    Morning all,

In a bit of a transitional stage at the moment and thinking of sticking with this lot as I`ve already taken a 4 point hit.

    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Enrique Baines Evans (Simpson Brown)
    Nani Mata Formica Silva (Dyer)
    RVP (c) Adebayor Ba

Any suggestions about anything appreciated. Thanks.

Debating whether to make a transfer this week.

    Vorm (Schwarzer)
    Jones Enrique Walker NTaylor (Simpson)
    Bale Silva Larsson (Pilkington) (Dyer)
    RVP(c) Adebayor Aguero

Have 1 FT and 1.2m in the bank
Just concerned that Aguero won't start this GW after 90 mins against Bayern. What's everyone's opinions? If he does play I imagine he'll have a lot of fun against what has been an uncharacteristically shakey Chelski defence.

    Aguero -> Ba?
Or Aguero-> Ba and Pilkington -> Nani for 4pt hit?
Or Aguero -> Ba and Simpson -> Vermaelen for 4pt hit

Golden rule in FPL, learned the hard way over many long painful seasons. Trying to be too clever kills your points in the long run. Keep it simple, Valencia has no form + no guarantee of starts + little match fitness. A lot more can go wrong than go right... now obviously he could easily score 1 goal + 2 assists vs Wolves & that might really annoy you if you didn't transfer him in. But my advice would be play the percentages & over the season it will work out better.
