Suspensions

The FA have this evening confirmed Luis Suarez has been found guilty of racial misconduct towards Patrice Evra and have handed the Liverpool forward an eight-match ban and a fine of £40,000, pending appeal.

The Independent Regulatory Commission announced the decision as follows:
1. Mr Suarez used insulting words towards Mr Evra during the match contrary to FA Rule E3(1);
2. the insulting words used by Mr Suarez included a reference to Mr Evra’s colour within the meaning of Rule E3(2);
3. Mr Suarez shall be warned as to his future conduct, be suspended for eight matches covering all first team competitive matches and fined the sum of £40,000;
4. the [penalty] is suspended pending the outcome of any appeal lodged by Mr Suarez against this decision.

The fourth point here is crucial- the Merseyside club have 14 days in which to contest the decision, which means that Suarez is available for selection over the next fortnight. The length of time until appeal takes in four Premier League games- (wig, BLA, NEW, mcy) – and with Kenny Dalglish’s side struggling for goals right now, there’s every chance that, for as long as the club feel he is in the right frame of mind, Suarez will take part in these games.

Liverpool have since released a strongly worded statement this evening and it’s pretty obvious, upon reading, that not only are they firmly behind their player, they will also be appealing this decision. The following excerpt sums up their thoughts:

It seems incredible to us that a player of mixed heritage should be accused and found guilty in the way he has based on the evidence presented. We do not recognise the way in which Luis Suarez has been characterised. Nothing we have heard in the course of the hearing has changed our view that Luis Suarez is innocent of the charges brought against him and we will provide Luis with whatever support he now needs to clear his name.

With the suspension on hold until after the outcome of any appeal, then, it’s impossible to speculate what games Suarez could potentially miss. Given that the FA have taken two months to reach this decision, it’s fair to say the likely appeal won’t be rapidly resolved.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

          I have to admit it does read like a hastily prepared, childish summation of anything they could think of which supports Suarez's case.

          Not overly impressed with it but content with the general stance of the statement.

    If there's any controversy about the Suarez ban it's this:

    "We find it extraordinary that Luis can be found guilty on the word of Patrice Evra alone when no-one else on the field of play - including Evra's own Manchester United teammates and all the match officials - heard the alleged conversation between the two players in a crowded Kop goalmouth while a corner kick was about to be taken."

        The last opportunity to play your January wildcard will be whilst GW 23 is in progress, and it will result in a new squad for GW24. I agree that FPL ought to have explained this more clearly.

    Racism should be banned from football, as also should other forms of abuse, but I do not believe that Suarez, unlike JT, was being intentionally racist.

    If Suarez deserves an 8 game ban, then JT ought really to get a much longer one, but I don't expect him to receive more than that plus the loss of the England captaincy again plus whatever punishment the courts decide. JT claimed that what he said was "I never called you a (expletive) black (expletive)", which is a way of saying what he was thinking whilst simultaneously apparently denying it. He could have just said "I never called you that", but didn't.

    In Suarez's case, the only evidence against him, apart from Evra's claims, appears to have been Suarez's own admission that, after Evra had already abused him and called him a South American, Suarez then responded by calling Evra "negrito", meaning "little black fella". He only admitted this because he expected that this admission would help clear his name, but he would surely not have admitted this if it really had been intended to be a racist insult. (Evra also attempted to get Suarez sent off, and only made his complaint after he had failed to achieve this).

    An 8 game ban is a severe punishment, and unprecedented in cases such as this. Genuine cases of racism should be severely punished, but this was a comparatively mild case with mitigating circumstances, if indeed it really was racism at all. The initial decision has laid down a marker, but ought to be reduced on appeal, say to a suspended sentence of at least 8 games if the offence is repeated.

    Players have now been warned about how seriously such incidents are regarded, and that any future cases could result in even more severe punishment - and so should cases of extreme non-racist abuse by players, managers and spectators.

    And yes, I am a Liverpool supporter, but I don't think that destroys my argument.

      Intent is nigh on impossible to prove or disprove.

      He said what he said. & as such he's been judged on it. His background is irelelvant. The law of the land must come first.

      I too am a Liverpool supporter and can see many flaws in what's happened during this case. I believe that a) Suarez is not a racist b) Suarez made comments that were interpretted as being racist c) If Evra was really offended he would have said something to the referee before Suarez has said something "10 times" d) Suarez did not appreciate the impact that his "comments" would have in the UK e) Evra would not have made any complaint had Man Utd won f) the FA are making an example of Suarez as racism is very high profile g) the FA are not biased against Liverpool over Man Utd or any other team.

      However, Suarez's ignorance of the British culture and feeling on racism is not an excuse. It makes no difference if it is acceptable for other cultures/nationalities to use particular phrases, or if those phrases are acceptable if used by team-mates or friends. What matters is what's acceptable in this country. Depending on the evidence there is no way that the FA could have given a smaller punishment.............but I hope that anyone else found guilty of the same offence is given the same punishment.

        Missing that point maybe?

        What we believe, think or feel about the evidence (or lack of) it is pretty irrelevant. The panel judged on the evidence presented.

        It's his right to appeal. The appeal board might rule differently. He could be handed a significanlty reduced ban. Or, a longer one.

          Longer one unlikely at this point. Expect appeal and original judgment upheld, perhaps with a week or 2 knocked off.

      I'm sorry but the arguments in defence of Suarez are just getting embarrassing now. 'He's 1/4 black', 'he didn't understand what he was saying', 'some of his best mates are black', 'John Terry is worse'.

      The word Suarez apparently used isn't of itself racist and the evidence against him shouldn't have been enough to ban him had he not admitted to using the word himself. What nobody wants to accept (in the Suarez or indeed the Terry case) is that context is everything in these matters.

      Suarez hasn't been banned because he used a racial word. Suarez has been banned because he repeatedly used a racial word in a pejorative sense to abuse an opponent.

        Curious.

        If the ban is upheld (I'm speculating that Suarez will appeal here). Will Liverpool take any action against him?

        Surely they have a club policy towards racism? Interesting.

          Given the circumstances and Kenny's support, this looks unlikely. Any further club punishment would have to circumvent Kenny's aathoritaa.

            Interesting seas for the Liverpool board ahead.

            If the ban is upheld. They take no action against a player in their team, launching any club policy out of the window.

            Or, take action & undermine Kenny D.

      it wasn't hard to predict though, it was always a possible outcome. there could be someone who said suarez was safe, and if that was the outcome then he'd be clearly knowing his stuff too 😀
