Suspensions

The FA have this evening confirmed Luis Suarez has been found guilty of racial misconduct towards Patrice Evra and have handed the Liverpool forward an eight-match ban and a fine of £40,000, pending appeal.

The Independent Regulatory Commission announced the decision as follows:
1. Mr Suarez used insulting words towards Mr Evra during the match contrary to FA Rule E3(1);
2. the insulting words used by Mr Suarez included a reference to Mr Evra’s colour within the meaning of Rule E3(2);
3. Mr Suarez shall be warned as to his future conduct, be suspended for eight matches covering all first team competitive matches and fined the sum of £40,000;
4. the [penalty] is suspended pending the outcome of any appeal lodged by Mr Suarez against this decision.

The fourth point here is crucial- the Merseyside club have 14 days in which to contest the decision, which means that Suarez is available for selection over the next fortnight. The length of time until appeal takes in four Premier League games- (wig, BLA, NEW, mcy) – and with Kenny Dalglish’s side struggling for goals right now, there’s every chance that, for as long as the club feel he is in the right frame of mind, Suarez will take part in these games.

Liverpool have since released a strongly worded statement this evening and it’s pretty obvious, upon reading, that not only are they firmly behind their player, they will also be appealing this decision. The following excerpt sums up their thoughts:

It seems incredible to us that a player of mixed heritage should be accused and found guilty in the way he has based on the evidence presented. We do not recognise the way in which Luis Suarez has been characterised. Nothing we have heard in the course of the hearing has changed our view that Luis Suarez is innocent of the charges brought against him and we will provide Luis with whatever support he now needs to clear his name.

With the suspension on hold until after the outcome of any appeal, then, it’s impossible to speculate what games Suarez could potentially miss. Given that the FA have taken two months to reach this decision, it’s fair to say the likely appeal won’t be rapidly resolved.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Ha ha I know what you mean.

      If you can target a player from one of those teams who runs the show and is involved in everything that team do then you're laughing.

      That, or they're a dirt cheap defender who might score the odd goal/keep the odd clean sheet and free funds for good attackers.

    this is an absolute disgrace - seriously whilst not condemning racism in any any way shape or form. Footballing authorities can not ban any player for NAME CALLING.

    Whilst Racism is more serious than calling someone Fatty (lampard) Big Nose (Townsend) Baldy (too many) Shrek (Rooney) any complaint of such nature should be thro the legal authorities - as it may end up as the FA have basically labelled a player racist despite no real evidence.

    The John Terry case has been left to Police - who will investigate and if they feel the case warrants they will proceed and if a court of law proves him guilty then the FA should take appropriate action.

    This Suarez case has dragged on two months and not one complaint made to the police.....the Fa should not even be investigating on a "he said" basis.

    Personally, I would expect Legal action to be taken against the FA by Liverpool and or Suarez - defamation of character, as forever from tonight onwards he shall be remembered for being a racisist!!

        Although Evra may himself agree that Suarez isn't an actual racist, he can still be found guilty of using inappropriate race based insults. 8 match ban? They're making an example. And rightly so.

      Assuming there's evidence, they have every right to ban him. You can't compare being called Big Nose with someone using language that could easily be construed as racist. There's not a history of people with big noses being slaves to people with small noses or bald people being persecuted for their lack of hair.

      I think Abeid will be given a go, unless for some reason Tiote isnt 100% then he might use Smith. Vukic is in the frame too, but I reckon Abeid. I'd like to see him anyway, looked good pre-season.

      If you're doing that for the vice captain lulz you might get a shock - there is a reasonable chance he will play tomorrow. I think he'll be off the bench though so will only get about 20mins.

    A lot of people are making the mistake of arguing wether Suarez is a racist or not, that is not the issue.
    You don't have to be a racist to call people something to wind them up, apparantly he did and got caught.
    It has nothing to do with his ethnicity or the color of his friends/family or whatever, he spoke the words.

    Since this is the first official occasion for FA, ruining there zero racist incidents record, they make an example out of it and give a lengthy ban to make sure nobody else does it.

    Lets just hope that they will be consistent with it from now on.

    Ps: I would be pissed off to if it was a player from my faourite team, but I would also be disappointed if my club didn't punish the player for ruining it's reputation and dragging it's name in the dirt.

        I have to agree, I've never seen such a hate campaign against a manager. Perhaps if the 'fans' had cheered on their team rather than chanting Kean Out come hell or high water for the last 10 weeks then they might be doing a bit better.

        That's not entirely fair. These fans pay their money for their season tickets, and have probably been doing so for many years. For the first time in a long time they feel they have a hoax for a manager and ignorant bastards for owners. I think the Blackburn fans are expressing themselves in the only manner that is left.

      +1. Not Kean's fault he was appointed...blame the owners if anything. Blackburn have been unlucky this season. Missed 2 pens against Everton, and have played in some close games. Also he hasn't had funds to spend...

      I hope the next manager comes in and there is no turnaround in results...I'd like to see their reactions then.

          I think you're better off having 2 for this weekend.

          I never made any changes cos I think this was a nice easy week to get to 2 free transfers. You're effectively going the same length of time you'd normally go for 1 free transfer but you'll now have 2 instead.

    Interesting text from a Blackburn fan to BBC just now:

    Matt in Blackburn, via text: "I'm a Blackburn fan leaving at half-time. Lynch mob mentality not for me. Scared, frankly. Embarrassed by so-called 'support'. They bizarrely think the anti-Kean chants don't affect the players. That's not a home game atmosphere for the biggest match of the season."

      Liverpool Football Club is very surprised and disappointed with the decision of the Football Association Commission to find Luis Suarez guilty of the charges against him.

      We look forward to the publication of the Commission's Judgment.  We will study the detailed reasons of the Commission once they become available, but reserve our right to appeal or take any other course of action we feel appropriate with regards to this situation.

      We find it extraordinary that Luis can be found guilty on the word of Patrice Evra alone when no-one else on the field of play - including Evra's own Manchester United teammates and all the match officials - heard the alleged conversation between the two players in a crowded Kop goalmouth while a corner kick was about to be taken.

      The Club takes extremely seriously the fight against all forms of discrimination and has a long and successful track record in work relating to anti-racist activity and social inclusion.  We remain committed to this ideal and equality for all, irrespective of a person's background.

      LFC considers racism in any form to be unacceptable - without compromise.  It is our strong held belief, having gone over the facts of the case, that Luis Suarez did not commit any racist act.  It is also our opinion that the accusation by this particular player was not credible - certainly no more credible than his prior unfounded accusations.

      It is key to note that Patrice Evra himself in his written statement in this case said 'I don't think that Luis Suarez is racist'.  The FA in their opening remarks accepted that Luis Suarez was not racist.

      Luis himself is of a mixed race family background as his grandfather was black.  He has been personally involved since the 2010 World Cup in a charitable project which uses sport to encourage solidarity amongst people of different backgrounds with the central theme that the colour of a person's skin does not matter; they can all play together as a team.

      He has played with black players and mixed with their families whilst with the Uruguay national side and was Captain at Ajax Amsterdam of a team with a proud multi-cultural profile, many of whom became good friends.

      It seems incredible to us that a player of mixed heritage should be accused and found guilty in the way he has based on the evidence presented. We do not recognise the way in which Luis Suarez has been characterised.

      It appears to us that the FA were determined to bring charges against Luis Suarez, even before interviewing him at the beginning of November. Nothing we have heard in the course of the hearing has changed our view that Luis Suarez is innocent of the charges brought against him and we will provide Luis with whatever support he now needs to clear his name.

      We would also like to know when the FA intend to charge Patrice Evra with making abusive remarks to an opponent after he admitted himself in his evidence to insulting Luis Suarez in Spanish in the most objectionable of terms.  Luis, to his credit, actually told the FA he had not heard the insult.
