[sbu_large_image] Scout Picks

We’re spoiled for choice this time round with some strong fixtures on the horizon for all the top six contenders. Looking at the gameweek 18 schedule, the potential for big scores is huge. With Christmas just around the corner, the Scout Picks arrive a little earlier than normal, then; let’s hope we don’t serve up any turkeys:

A home game for Swansea? That’s the keeper situation sorted, then. We don’t really need to elaborate much further on Michel Vorm’s record of 6 clean sheets in eight games at the Liberty Stadium. With QPR scoring just 3 goals in their last four matches, Brendan Rodgers’ side will be confident of yet another shut out against the Londoners this coming Tuesday.

With Nemanja Vidic ruled out for the season and Rio Ferdinand confirmed as unavailable for the home clash against Wigan, Jonny Evans makes his way into the Scout Picks. The Irishman looks to have established himself as a regular at the heart of the champions’ back-four and with United conceding just a single goal in the three matches since his return to the first XI, Evans, currently priced at 4.6, is a strong cut-price option for the Latics clash.

While Liverpool struggle to find an end product in front of goal, their defensive solidity has looked assured of late, with 3 clean sheets in a row. Kenny Dalglish’s side will be licking their lips at the prospect of heaping further misery on Steve Kean as Blackburn roll up to Anfield; in comes Jose Enrique, then, with the left-back offering more attacking potential than any member of the Reds’ back-four.

Since recovering from an ankle injury at the start of November, Thomas Vermaelen has served a reminder of his goalscoring abilities, with 3 goals in just seven games upon his return. The Belgian has helped the Gunners to 3 clean sheets in those games, with no more than a single goal conceded, and with Wolves arriving at the Emirates, he has every chance of prospering at both ends of the pitch.

Robert Huth makes the Scout Picks for the first time this season. The big German has been an influential figure in Stoke’s recent four-match winning run, with Tony Pulis’ decision to move him back to centre-half proving a masterstroke. Huth’s partnership with Ryan Shawcross at the back affords the Potters a steelier edge and he’s also started to return attacking points once again, with a goal and assist in his last four matches. With Aston Villa struggling to deal with set-piece situations this season, Huth should give Alex McLeish’s side a testing time at the Britannia on Boxing Day.

Currently second only to the Fantasy phenomenon that is Robin Van Persie in our Captain Poll, Nani is a nailed-on pick ahead of the home clash against Wigan. Since moving back to the left wing, he’s started to produce returns of a similar quantity to last season once more, and with two double-figure points hauls in his last three games, is in frightening form.

Scott Sinclair is a player who enjoys home comforts more than most. With 51 of his 72 points coming at the Liberty Stadium, including three double-figure points hauls, the Swansea winger will be hoping the visit of QPR affords him the chance to continue his Liberty Stadium streak. Factor in his spot-kick duties and Sinclair could be ready to give Neil Warnock’s side the post-Christmas blues.

Gareth Bale gets the nod for our final midfield slot. Norwich have been particularly porous at the back this season, with the Canaries yet to chalk up a single clean sheet thus far. Tottenham’s visit to Carrow Road means that record is unlikely to change and with the Welshman continuing to flourish as a key figure within Harry Redknapp’s side, his role will be crucial as Spurs look to return to goalscoring ways, after netting just once in each of their last three games.

Wayne Rooney makes a welcome return to the Scout Picks ahead of the home showdown with Wigan. The United forward has been overshadowed by the performances of Nani in the last few gameweeks but he’s getting amongst the goals again, netting –and picking up bonus points- in each of last three appearances. United are starting to look ominous going forward once again and Rooney’s a definite armband contender for the Latics clash.

A home game for Robin Van Persie against Wolves this Tuesday looks the perfect, gift-wrapped Christmas present for Fantasy managers. Undoubtedly, there are plenty of appetising alternatives but a run of form that has seen him return 15 goals and 5 assists in his last twelve games, it’s almost too much of a risk not to hand him the armband as the Gunners go looking for their seventh win in eight at the Emirates.

While Didier Drogba struggles for goals and Fernando Torres warms the bench, Daniel Sturridge has been Chelsea’s leading light up front this season. The former Man City man has proven to be essential component of Andre Villas-Boas’ side and has found the net in five of his last six fixtures. With a home game against a Fulham side still licking their wounds from a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Man United, Sturridge looks poised for a Boxing Day feast.

Will Jones play next game?; Huth appeals on goal threat too and Stoke have a good chance of at least one cleansheet in the next two.

Pick one to play, one as first sub, and one as second sub:

    Shotton (have Shawcross)
    Drenthe
    Naylor (have Vorm)

I've got them in that order so far, fancy a Stoke clean sheet. I also expect someone to not play, so a sub will come in. Thanks, and Merry Christmas 🙂

Absolutely a good move. Bale is the safest bet for Spurs MF now VDVs hammys are fooked and Ba loses his usefulness from next week when he has Pool, Man Utd & African nations cup after that.

I don't agree with the article saying that Enrique is the biggest attacking threat in the Liverpool backline. He's a class act, excellent defender and attacks with purpose but his final ball is poor and Liverpool are wasteful in front of goal.

Johnson on the other hand looks like he could score a goal every other game. Skrtel is also more of a threat imo.

Oh yes, definitely would. I'd say Jones/Shawcross are much ado over the next two and I'm (perhaps optimistically?) thinking Rooney is on for a 25(ish) point score against Blackburn and Wigan...

Probably end up wrong, but I expect him to cover Ba by more than 4.

Yeah i expect him to as well. Only trouble is that with O'Hara an B.Johnson in midfield my squad is a little thin (http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/1566/event-history/17/). My choices really are:

              a) O'Hara > Walcott
              b) Ba > Adebayor
              c) Jones & Ba > Shawcross & Rooney (4 point hit)
              d) Jones & O'Hara > Mata & Huth (4 point hit)

              Still like option C?

                C is still my preference.

You've got the added Bradley Johnson in there but I too will be running (and hopefully avoiding) the Jamie O'Hara diminishing gauntlet as I make transfers hopefully more amenable to future endeavours.

I am guessing don't have to worry too much about price rises now over next day or so as it's christmas day tomorrow and not many people will be on the net transferring people in and out?

In a bit of a dilema here, want to bring in Nani and Sturridge for VDV and Yakubu BUT i'm .2 short so which option is better:

    1) VDV > Nani, Yakubu > Studge, + another 4 point hit on 1 of my cheap players like Brown or Moses to make up .2.
    2) Silva > Nani, Yakubu > Studge only one 4 point hit
    3) some other move?

Lose out on a lot of money from Silva as i would want him back in so i think it might be worth the hit this week?

I think you need to take a hit but it is worth it imo. Yak > Sturridge is an obvious one.

You could do VDV to Bale then upgrade one of your other midfielders to Nani or Valencia. Keep Silva imo.

I would have said sell Jagielka but he has the double coming up..

I'm still 3M short for Nani even if i bring in Bale.

i could just do VDV to Nani + the Yakubu move and Jagielka to Hibbert or Moses to Gower/ Reo Coker to make up the .2 i need? all together that would be a 8 point hit.

I can't really see any other way if i'm to keep Silva.

I'm thinking of doing Silva and yakubu to Nani and Studge tbh, don't want to lose Silva but want to keep VDV too for the double + better fixtures. I won't be bringing SIlva back because of the value i'm losing in him but i can bring in Aguero for Adebayor in a couple of weeks?

Ouch - is it somebody off here? Looks a very scouty team.
Should be close though - I predict a Welbeck brace will win it for you.

I don't think he's off here, hopefully Nani can show up.

Haha! I've just checked my opponent. 0 transfers made this season, team value 99.3m.

Bosingwa and Young still in starting lineup, next sub is Di Santo 🙂

(will probably luck out and kick my arse)

Right, with Sturridge's value rocketing, by the time I get round to buying BAE, I may not be able to afford him.

This leads me to the prospect of blo*dy VDV who I can swap for Silva.

    Thoughts?

Hard call. At the moment, it would seem an act of lunacy to trade reliable Silva for crocked VdV

That said, would be typical of ye FPL gods to bless VdV with a massive haul over the dgw after we've all transferred him out..

I'm just desperate to not be undercovered for the double and Wolves game.

I know what you mean, though - it would be typical of FF fate that someone completely written off can come in with a massive haul. I don't like the idea of buying VDV and his monotonous hamstrings and I wouldn't captain him, but...

Don't buy VDV. It's crazyness. I've just sold him and believe me I've been uber patient with the guy but this hammy problem is more serious than any of us know I think.

He's not moving right when he's on the field and is not playing games or coming off at half time. Stay clear and monitor up to DGW

Basically, it will probably come down to:

            BAE and -4

            or

VDV and lose .2 Silva for a couple of weeks until the WC

    Current Team:

    Vorm / Westwood
    Jones / Kompany / Simpson / Hall / Wilkinson
    Silva / Nani / Bale / Sinclair / Ferguson
    Ba / RVP / Adebayor

1.8m in bank, 2 free transfers, any suggestions? I need to get rid of Hall , Wilkinson, Westwood and perhaps Ferguson at some point, but not necessarily urgently. Want to get rid of Sinclair as well.
Was thinking of bringing in Valencia for Sinclair?

Also, what are peoples views on timing of transfers? I’ve always waited till the last few days / day incase players got injured in training or when there was more info on team news and who would most likely start etc, but with this method I miss bringing people in cheaper if they rise in price over the week, and sometimes lose money on players who reduce in value before I transfer them out, whats the best method?

Last season I used to wait. But this season I do my transfers early (sometimes on Sunday nights) and get those risers before they go up or get rid of the under-performers before they drop. It definitely makes a big difference over the season.

I'd keep Sinclair for another week. You have Nani. Maybe use one of your 2 frees to do Wilko/Hall>Shotton?

Then you'll have 2 frees again next week and can think about getting in some Spurs/Eve players for DGW

Ok the team I'm against looks like it has been made and left from the first few weeks, 94.7m value and have only ever made one transfer, it is: Al-Habsi Cashley Cahill Boswinga Clichy - Ramsey Jarvis Albrighton - Shrek (The legend that is) Suarez Rodallega. Bench Given Duff Taarabt Warnock.

      Vs

Vorm - Kompany Evans BAE Enrique - Nani Mata Bale - The Yak Kun Robin (C).

Seriously if i get beaten i will give up on this the only worry is he has Shrek as captain.
