There’s no doubt the Martin O’Neill effect has made a substantial difference to Sunderland’s recent fortunes. With thirteen points in the six games since the Irishman has taken the reigns, in comparison to eleven points in fourteen fixtures under the guidance of Steve Bruce, the new manager has brought about an increased interest in his players as Fantasy assets…

One of the main beneficiaries of the new regime on Wearside has been young James McClean. Prior to O’Neill’s introduction, the winger had failed to appear in a single minute of Sunderland’s season as the club sank ever-closer to the relegation zone. Bruce, to his credit, was the one who acquired McClean but a refusal to afford him a first-team chance has, on reflection, proved something of an unfortunate oversight.

Picking up maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points in his two starts under O’Neill, in addition to notching a goal in the 4-1 win at Wigan, McClean has been propelled onto Fantasy radars as a strong cut-price option. Coming in at just 4.5, he continued his strong form last weekend, scoring and assisting in the 2-0 FA Cup win at Peterborough and, with winter wildcards being weighed up, his name is popping up in plenty provisional squads.

Is this surge of interest justified? We delved deeper into McClean’s performance statistics so far to judge his role in the Sunderland revival and assess his likely potential for the weeks ahead compared to his team-mates, and another familiar name in his FPL price bracket…

Jones or richards as even though both have attacking potential they both have a weakens defense at the minute. Def DO NOT bench BAE

Enrique, quite easily? Stoke have the biggest goal threat from the 4 fixtures and i could see them snatching a draw, possibly.

With Richards, Evans, BAE, Enrique, Simpson I have a similar dilemma. I know some would say Simpson but Newcy are at home to QPR. I'd go with Richards at the mo, but wish the defence rotated better 3 and 2.

Team for GW21 at the moment:

    Vorm(ARS)
    Simpson(QPR) Enrique(STO) Assou-Ekotto(WOL) Jones(BOL)
    Bale(WOL) Silva(wig) Nani(BOL)
    Adebaypr(WOL) Van Persie(swa) Sturridge(SUN)

subs - Hennessey, B.Johnson, Drenthe, McAuley

Assuming Silva plays i'm good to go, right? If he's ruled out what do you reckon to Silva > Dempsey?

Better than mine right now, Dunny, I've hardly got any defenders left.

I reckon Silva to Gerrard is better if you have the money. Stevie G looks like he's going to be making up for lost time now and, with Suarez out, he's Liverpool's most likely source of goals assists.

On free kicks and pens too and a bonus point magnet.

Cheers boys. I'm 0.1 short of getting Gerrard unfortunately but i also have a horrible feeling that Dempsey will score against us on Saturday, then after that he has a couple of nice looking home games.

Hopefully Silva will be passed fit and i won't have to worry about it! If Simpson is ruled out then i guess Johnson/Drenthe coming in isn't the worst thing. Certainly won't be using a transfer to get rid of him with the WC upcoming.

There really isn't one, Blind Faith.

The Holy One is the only sub £5m MF'er I'd recommend.

He plays every week and is the most attack minded of them all. The others are either defensive mids who'll have one good scoring game all season or are huge rotation risks.

0.0 in bank, though might get an extra 0.1 out of BAE (tactically transferred in last night) still.

    Just a couple of things:
    1) Should I get Santon instead of Simpson?
    2) Not entirely convinced by my m/f, but not sure where to go with it... I originally had SIlva in there, but might just do Nani -> Silva after this week. Should I consider Gerrard? Or perhaps Mata instead of VDV?

I'd go with Santon over Simpson. 0.2 banked and more assist potential.

Silva will be important over the coming weeks IMO. Have Nani or Gerrard for the next couple of weeks, then boot them out to make room.

I guess you'll want to ship hm for the following week, as he's ineligible, so a lot depends on who you think is best for this week. If you've got Bale and VDV, I'd ship him (either B or C looks good).

Maybe keep him for this week because of wolves but id certainly be looking to get rid of him after that. Id prob go aguero myself. I have rooney but depending on how he does at bolton he could be getting the chop for aguero.

How about this for a WC team..

    Krul Mignolet
    Lescott, Caulker, Huth, Senderos, Simpson
Bale, Valencia, Dempsey, Sess, Ben Arfa
    Odemwingie, Aguero, RVP

0 in the bank... Had to free up cash to fit Sessegnon in.

Don't like Lescott or Huth. Stoke aren't doing well defensively and Huth is expensive. Man City are on the downside and aren't with Kompany and their main man in midfield might be out so that puts even more pressure on them. I would do Lescott to Richards if your determined to have man city defense.

I think Darron Gibson for 5.3 would be a decent FPL prospect at Everton. Seems his move is very near completion. Shoots on sight and will hog some set where a right foot is needed I'd presume. Likely to be in a very advanced position too?

No you're right but those two have been injured so much that Heitinga has played loads there, and even Phil Neville a little (I think). I think his direct competition should be Tim Cahill, playing him as the most advanced player in a lone striker system.

Anyway, I'm not really buying him before we know but could be something.

Anybody slightly worried about Gerrard gametime this weekend?
Played 90 minutes in both cup competitions after returning to fitness, any chance he could be benched vs. Stoke. Or do we think he'll just power on and play 70-90 minutes again?

I think Liverpool are shitting it in the race for fourth and know if they dont get it home draws v s
Swansea, Norwich, Sunderland and Blackburn will likely have been the reason....
With that in mind I see Gerrard as a certain starter V Stoke

I'm playing my WC, I have RVP, Aguero and Yak. I was looking at differentials and saw that Bellamy is playing STO bol wol and he has far and away the best form right now if you only count when he plays 60+ minutes. He has only failed to score below 6 points once. So my question is what are the odds of him playing a full game or at least 60 minutes and do you think Aguero>Bellamy is a good trade.

Dempsey or VDV would be great compared to Nani. Less rotation risk, both are doing well, better price.

I'm hovering over the sell button myself. Gerrard is looking hungry, with the demise of Lampard's starting slot he looks like the last of the Holy Trinity and could go FPL mental.
