The first Scoutcast of 2012 is here. There’s no dressing this up, the Episode title tells you exactly what to expect. With consecutive gameweek scores hovering around the two millionth rank mark and “ghost ship” squads passing me by, who can really blame me?

A string of unfortunate transfers and an errant injury to an Arsenal centre-back threatens to bring my season falling around my ears. Mark spends much of the podcast attempting to reassure me – convinced I’m at the point of no return, whilst simultaneously adding a few sly digs on the 71 points that’s opened up between us. I wouldn’t have expected anything less.

The season and the show must go on. In between gripes, we eventually throw in the usual array of regulars and, by the end, there’s even a sense of hope. Happy New Year? It couldn’t get any worse.

Feel my pain here.

Leave it at that. With Savic playing in defence, Moses might do something

Richards looks monstrous when he bombs forward. I got him for his attacking potential but I think Mancini does n't trust him to play in the center of defence which is good news for his owners.

not guzan i dont think, given back in training, too risky
slight edge to stockdale in my view. do you have a decent 2nd keeper for any of the away blackburn fixtures for krul or stockdale?

ok see you need to play one of the 3 in question. do you have a new or ful defender? id base your decision on whether you like to double up or if you like to spread your chances around.

So you're right Fuzzy wouldnt wanna double up on New and rather spread the risk..

Depends on your other keeper but Stockdale looks the best - Fulham have tightened up and are strong at home. Beat Pool 1-0 there I think. Krul has two away games including one there and a home game to a QPR that have a new manager. Villa are just dire atm.

FFS Flavors of the Month: REVIEW

So I did a little experiment the month before the festive period on players considered flavors of the week. For example this week they are probably HBA, Sessegnon, Yakubu, and McClean etc.
The reason for the experiment was to see how they ended up performing, and whether they lived up to the hype or not, particularly over the first 4 or 5 game weeks. I waited for the DGW to be over to assess how things worked out. The names I collected for each game week were the most popular names being bandied about, and as some of you remember I asked people whether they were right or not. You can be assured that the player’s chosen were the combined opinion of the FFS community.

    GW14: Adebayor, Bale, Baines
    GW15: Jones, Nani, Ba
    GW16: Nani, Mata
    GW17: Evans, Drenthe

    Points total since then

    GW14 – GW20

    Adebayor: 2, 6, 5, 7, 5, 2, 2, 2/ Total: 31 Bad
    Bale: 13, 2, 0, 4, 16, 1, 9, 3/ Total: 48 Good
    Baines: 2, 2, 2, 6, 11, 5, 1, 1/ Total: 30 Bad

It is interesting that Baines and Adebayor got virtually the same amount of points 😯
An average of between 3 and 4 points a game is a little disappointing to say the least, especially as they would have been bought for the DGW. Bale on the other hand has been great value and his popularity shows no signs of abating.

Personally I feel a bit annoyed that I didn’t jump on the Bale bandwagon sooner and Adebayor has certainly disappointed of late. Part 2 will be posted soon

It can be easy to be swayed by the crowd. Especially when things snowball. Imagine what would happen if McClean scores a goal against Chelsea next week. For Wild card time that will test many a good managers resolve

I can see what would happen:

          1) Person who posted members article about McClean having lowest ICT scores of all but one Sunderland mid gets laughed at by McClean owners
          2) Non McClean owners are either turned to the Clean side or become more convinced he's a flash in the pan
          3) McClean keeps scoring right up to GW23
          4) Doubting McClean becomes absurd and FFS wildcard him in droves in at the last minute
          5) McClean dropped.

leave rvp alone. its great to see a player hitting a wall coming and getting rid before everyone else. but rvp is tooooo valuble in that every good squad has him, and its more damaging to miss one of his hauls when everyone has him than it is to suffer a 2 pointer from him. he just cant be dropped until hes injured.

I don't advocate crazy talk like transferring out RVP but it depends how much you got him for.
I think Valencia will make the assists for Rooney goals, so you are not losing much.

moses seems a nailed on 2 pointer, but city's defense isn't optimal atm, and if wigan do score, he's a good bet to provide. (though a savic foul resulting in a watson penalty seems possible as well)

So isnt it better to risk a potential 1 pointer with more upside than it is to play a probable 2 pointer? Or am i just being stubborn wanting to get SOMETHING from drenthe before i get rid, next week latest?

I think he will start. Have you watched Warnock playing of late. He has errors in him and I think Drenthe will take advantage.

Well, maybe you need to be stubborn to stop yourself from weeping about the Drenthe situation; you'd be pretty miffed if he started, scored well but was on your bench. However, we all know how negative Moyes currently (I mean, surely he can find a way to fit in the most exciting and dangerous player the club's had for years? Baffling) and he has said he doesn't really fancy him in away games, probably based on defensive ability and work rate.

All things considered, I think I would go Moses just, but bloody hell it's a tough call.

    Krul/Lindegaard
    Caulker Shotton Enrique Richards Kelly
    McClean Bale Dempsey Valencia Silva
    RVP Rooney Sturridge

Leaves me 1.4 in the bank. Did have Aguero, but considering I'll be buying Ba back in after ACOn am thinking Studge is the better bet, and also allows me a way in for Valencia against Bolton. I fancy Rooney over Aguero for the next few too. Good to go?

With Ba and Tiote gone plus Ameobi injured it seems likely that he will start. Newcastle fans also think he is one of their best players according to the forums. His wonder goal in the cup game also bought him some headlines

Just a little thought. Player stats are useful but are focused on an individual and can't capture the shape or interplay of a team, which actually determines the stats, not the other way round
It's seeing effect, not cause. To see the cause, you need to watch the game... try watching a few matches relevant to your FPL team this weekend. Streaming, pub, even live! It does pay off. Has helped me understand Spurs and United a little better - my biggest mistake was bringing in Everton DGWers having NOT watched them.

I agree. Your eyes can't deceive you unlike stats. I have watched Everton this season and they looked dire, that's why I did not bother getting them for the DGW or in the near future.

I watched bits of the Bolton home loss and it was a funeral atmosphere. It's like Moyes died a long time ago. His negativity is astonishing, especially with regards to Drenthe - and the bench just depressing. Could he go?

Haven't watched them too recentl, did see them a month ago or so so things may have changed. It really depends on whether Lamps plays. If he does, he is the most advanced midfielder in the three and Ramires suffers, if not it's Ramires. Very fast, very dangerous. If the strikers don't fire Chelsea tend to score from mid, especially on the break. But I'm not sure Sunderland will be a good fixture overall.

FFS Flavors of the Month: REVIEW Part 2

    GW14: Adebayor, Bale, Baines
    GW15: Jones, Nani, Ba
    GW16: Nani, Mata
    GW17: Evans, Drenthe

    Points total since then

    GW15 – GW20

    Jones: 2, 5, 1, 0, 1, -2/ Total: 7 Terrible (injured GW17,18)
    Nani: 18, 3, 16, 3, 1, 2/ Total: 43 Good
    Ba: 12, 2, 11, 9, 2, 12/ Total: 48 Excellent

Jones proved to be a terrible disappointment over this period and it only got worse. Things somewhat conspired against him when Vidic got injured and he was moved back into defense the injury also didn’t help. If you got Nani on this game week you would have been just in time for his 18 point haul, any later and his returns would have been modest. And finally for all those who got Ba, congratulations. He was a big winner for many people and it saddens me that I never jumped aboard.

I think I might struggle in this round of the cup. Next opponent is ranked 13k and we have very similar teams. Differentials are:

Him: Ruddy, Walker, S Petrov, Sessegnon, Nani

Me: Vorm, BAE, Moses, Sinclair, Mata

What do you rekon? Im brickin it. Think I'll do well to get through. I could react and wildcard in a better team but I want to hang on until GW23

i understand the desire to stand your ground and not cater to others demands when youve made your own decision to express yourself with the name change.

But at the end of the day mate, as a non-partial observer, it would seem logical to just change it back.

Currently I have Sess and Moses but McClean and Walter is also decent so it's hard to decide my current wc team are:
        Vorm, Mignolet
        Enrique, Evans, Williamson, Shotton, Kelly
Nani, Gerrard (for one-two week then Silva), Bale, Moses(or McClean), Sess (or Walter)
        Yak, RVP, Aguero

Bear in mind - Walters/McClean/Yak rotate well.

Mignolet - not nailed-on. Get Tremmel & play Vorm every GW. Kenny/Krul are decent options - not enough value for my liking.

          Senderos over Kelly.

          Gerrard > Silva & Evans > Richards.

          Overall, good team!
