Peter Odemwingie made an instant impact in his first Premier League campaign, going on to notch 15 goals and 9 assists – an outstanding return for a player commanding a modest Fantasy price tag. We went into this season expecting more from Odemwingie under the stewardship of Roy Hodgson, but, up until December, the Nigerian has failed to live up to last term’s outstanding displays.

Odemwingie had looked a shadow of his former self, registering just a couple goals in the first 13 gameweeks amidst claims of injury and fatigue. After public criticism from Hodgson, however, the striker’s returns have shown definite improvement, with 2 goals and 3 assists between gameweeks 14-17 indicative of a step up in performance. Granted, the Baggies have failed to find the net in their last three outings but Odemwingie is undoubtedly back on the radar.

Odemwingie certainly needs to step up. Strike partner Shane Long has notched just once in his last seven appearances, having started his career at the Hawthorns in explosive style. Long is also currently nursing a back injury which could yet keep him out of the weekend clash with Norwich.

Although a more expensive Fantasy option than Long, there is good reason to believe that Odemwingie, with injuries now firmly behind him, has rediscovered his appetite. Despite missing a fair amount of action, his Fantasy contribution has already surpassed Long, with 4 goals and 3 assists compared with the Irishman’s 5 goals. Since the start of December, Odemwingie has outscored Long by 31 points to 18, an indication of their respective displays.

Chris Brunt’s absence with a fractured ankle is also significant to Odemwingie’s fortunes. While the Baggies will doubtless miss his creativity from midfield, Odemwingie seems set to be established as penalty taker during Brunt’s absence and he may even play a major role from direct free-kicks.

West Brom now appear to have favourable fixtures right up to the start of March. Having drawn a blank against a resilient Everton, home games against Norwich, Swansea and Sunderland afford Odemwingie the platform for a strong start to the New Year. It’s also worth noting that West Brom have scored 12 goals away from home this season, five more than at the Hawthorns.

With Demba Ba now departed for the African Cup of Nations with Senegal, his owners will be shopping for a mid-price replacement and Odemwingie, priced at 7.2, could well fit the bill. With Nigeria failing to qualify for the tournament, he will remain in England, sizing up Norwich this weekend, with our FPL January wildcards now in play. There’s no doubt Odemwingie has the pedigree to produce and, with a Fantasy ownership of just 3%, could well emerge as a hugely effective differential for those bold enough to take the punt.

ok those of you who have followed my attempts to create a top 6 teams attacking coverage wc side have basically ripped my Welbeck punt to shreds. So how does this look?

    Schwarzer/Sorensen

    Evans, Richards, BAE, Senderos, Santon

McLean, Bale, Valencia, Gerrard, Sess (or any other mid up to 7.1)

    Aguero, RvP, Sturridge

could get Nani, but it only leaves 5 million for a 4th/5th mid.

hmmm, could lose Liverpool coverage, but if Gerrard is back to his best he's a points gathering machine. I could get Dempsey and Adam, but with Stevie back Adam's set pieces will dry up and he has no value

I'm not wildcarding until after GW23 (all being well) so I'll have a couple of weeks to asses this.

Good article and here's some more food for thought, from an email update I received from Fantasy Football League:

"Influential Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will miss his side's trip to Wigan on Sunday because of suspension. The Belgian defender played an instrumental role in City's rise to the top of the Barclays Premier League, but will stay at home when his team-mates travel to the DW Stadium following his red card against rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup. Kompany will also miss the visit of Tottenham next weekend, while an ankle injury means David Silva is a doubt for the Wigan encounter.
Barclays Premier League legend Thierry Henry is expected to make his English top flight comeback when Arsenal face Swansea on Sunday. The Frenchman, who has returned to the Gunners in a short-term loan deal from the New York Red Bulls, scored an emotional winner against Leeds in the FA Cup on Monday. Henry has scored against every Barclays Premier League team he's faced and could add the Welsh outfit to that list if he's given the chance to join Robin van Persie in the line up.

Steven Gerrard is finally over his recurring groin troubles and is back among the goals. The talismanic Liverpool captain has been out of action for most of the past 12 months, but has scored in three of his last four appearances, in all competitions. Liverpool host Stoke on Saturday, a side they haven't conceded a goal to in their last three league meetings at Anfield. Fellow midfielder Paul Scholes made an extraordinary return from retirement last weekend and could feature for Manchester United against Bolton.

Tottenham welcomed two key players back to their first 11 when they beat Everton 2-0 on Wednesday night. Aaron Lennon and Michael Dawson returned to league action following spells on the sidelines as Spurs, who play Wolves this weekend, moved level on points with second-placed Manchester United. Newcastle will be without main-man Demba Ba for at least a month because he's left Tyneside to play for Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations. Manchester City brothers Kolo and Yaya Toure, plus Arsenal's Gervinho are also taking part."

we don't know, but Fergie seems to like him, the thing is, many people are downgrading defence to uprgrade mids and strikers. To this extent, Evans at 4.5 represents a decent shout, as he's cheap, as a Man U defender if he plays has a high chance of a CS, but if he doesn't, he's cheap enough that you wouldn't worry too much about him being benched as long as you have decent cover (for me it will be Senderos and Santon)

Evans has started about 12 games and has been injured and suspended in the meanwhile, Lindegaard has played 6 games. Expect Evans to get at least twice the number of starts compared to Lindegaard during rest of the season. You decide if it's worth it to pay 0.1M£ more for Evans.

No. MU back four should read Rafael/Smalling Jones Rio Evra. If Jones plays in mf, then Evans is next in the queue. But MUN can very well buiy a new mf in the transfer window, or Scholes can be given minutes alonside Carrick. Anderson is back too

That is a key question for me, Lord Trumps. I think he is going to start several games in the next month, but if United doesn't keep clean sheets with him as a starter then it is useless.

I have a history of always going cheap on the Defenders & Keepers every year so that I can load up on the Captainable...and there are good options like Caulker/Senderos/Shotton/Simpson/Brown this year.

JEvans even fits into the mold, so I am probably bringing him in today....but even as United fan I do not like him much! Super clumsy and usually not good enough (a couple times he should have seen Red this year too)....but a starting Defender for 4.5 on a top team really fits my criteria.

Please talk me out of it!

Has the going cheap on defense and keepers strategy paid off for you in previous years? There do seem to be more bargain basement defenders to pick from this season, which certainly supports your strategy. My back 5 is current Shotton Caulker Enrique Koscielny Kelly.

On a seperate note to all, whats this I'm reading about Shotton being injured?

Ben Arfa if we don't sign a striker ...

He could easily start Shola and Best up front but I think after the goal he scored vs Blackburn, he HAS to go with HBA, even if it's on the right wing. The fans have been screaming out for Ben Arfa to start for the last month or so but with Ba away, it HAS to happen. Surely??

There's an argument that Cabaye plays deeper without Tiote but could be on pens if Shola isn't on the pitch.

I think they're both good options.

Hmm yeah. But Pardew's preferred Shola with Best injured. That makes me very tentative. Had he thought HBA was any good, he would surely given him a decent number of starts already?

not saying Valencia is a poor option, just think Nani and Rooney may be enough. So you have 8.3 million for a 1 week punt?

true - but I think they have been super cautious this time...

              what about both of them:-)

              Front 8, 2 alternatives:

              1. Sessignon, Nani, Silva, Bale, Dyer, Yakubu, RVP, Sturridge
              2. Gerard, Nani, Silva, Bale, Dyer, Yakubu, RVP, Aguero

I'm looking at him for my wc team (as a United fan I will have an extra hot shower tonight to wash the dirt off), but his fixtures from GW24 until GW29 are frankly just awful

            TOT, manu, EVE, ARS, sun

that is a truly horrendous run.

YOU WILL NOT WIN AT OT.

That being said, I'm away, and we always seem to lose when I'm not there, they've only lost once when I've been to OT and that was in 1997 (and I'm now a ST holder)

You have Enrique because you expect clean sheets, yes? In that case, you'd expect 2 CS from Enrique + Johnson.
I don't see many better options then Johnson for the next 3.
Richards perhaps, but he has Tottenham GW22..

Hi, I have no idea how to use my wildcard. There are probably weaknesses in my side, but I just can't see them. Second opinion anyone?

    Vorm (Moreira)
    Walker-Jones-Enrique (Wilkinson)
    Bale-Silva-Dempsey-Nani (Ferguson)
    RVP-Morison-Adebayor

My subs maybe need improving, but doesn't seem that urgent.

Hmm I was considering Clark then I decided against it due to his pretty horrible stats. AVL aren't really fond of CS and 4.7 isn't cheap. Look elsewhere - Evans/Shotton (if fit).
