Mark Hughes takes charge of his first game as Queens Park Rangers manager today, as his side travels up to the Sports Direct Arena to face Newcastle United. After that, Thierry Henry returns to the Premier League, where he’ll be dreaming of a similar comeback to that of the fabulous Paul Scholes. Heroics or not, the Dugout Discussion is here to follow the events as they unfold (or to further reflect on the majestic Paul Scholes’ return). The team news from early game is in…

Newcastle XI: Krul, Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Santon, R.Taylor, Guthrie, Cabaye, Gutierrez, Shola Ameobi, Best.

QPR XI: Kenny, Hill, Ferdinand, Gabbidon, Young, Wright-Phillips, Derry, Buzsaky, Mackie, Bothroyd, Helguson.

It’s more a case of who’s missing today rather than who’s playing. The home side have a chance to leap-frog Liverpool into sixth with a win today, but they’ll have to do so without arguably their best two players. Senegalese Demba Ba and Ivorian Cheick Tiote have escaped to warmer climates for the African Cup of Nations. In come Shola Ameobi and Danny Guthrie.

As for the visitors, Joey Barton is suspended so misses the opportunity to play at his former stomping ground, and Adel Taarabt (Morocco) and Armand Traore (Senegal) are on international duty.

The Dugout Discussion chatroom can be accessed right here, and as you take your seat I’ll leave you with one brilliant fact I heard yesterday (and no, it’s about not Paul Scholes)… If Thierry Henry plays against Swansea today, it’ll be the 34th Premier League side he has faced. He’s scored against every one of the other 33.

HBA looked lively but do we think Pardew trusts him enough for starts, particularly away from home?

I suppose much will depend on Cabaye's injury.

Was the only Newcastle player with any creativity and invention so you'd hope so, particularly as you say if Cabaye is out for a spell.

With Tiote away though Pardew will probably be even more wary of starting him.

I can see him playing in games like today but not in the tough away matches, so it's a risk.

So many times doubling up on NEW/SWA keeper/defender has really boosted poor weeks. Next couple of weeks will be tough with them both away but think I'm gonna stick with them regardless.

I dislike Ryan Taylor as much as anyone but this is ultimately a game of skill. Of course there's luck involved, that's what keeps the bad players interested, and keeps them deluded into wrongly thinking that they can beat the more skillful player. If it was a pure game of skill, like chess, bad players soon give up because they can't rely on their bad decisions getting reward. Over the long run, just like poker, they will never beat the more skillful opponent.

    Vorm Lindegard

      Defence looks decent.

Lindegard I'd be careful as once he flops he'll be replaced. Ferguson is showing no patience with both goalkeepers it seems.

Ireland and HBA I'd be careful with HBA is a risk as he did not start today and has not had any minutes, also clearly injury prone. Ireland has had 2 assists last few games but still risky, why not go HBA to McClean and Ireland to Walters, Dempsey etc?

Torres is a nice picks looking very good bar no goals, but they will surely come.

Having Sess, not sure I want to double up on McClean, and still wouldnt be enough for Walters. Dempsey is another possibility, but just too expensive imo, and have a feeling ruiz/frie/dembele will share enough of ful points not to make him as necessary as everyone on here seems to think.
        Cheers the feedback though.

I know, when we were desperate for any forward that could kick a ball in 94' after Quinn got injured.
But then again, Pulis has a Bristol accent and as for Mick McCarthy...

RVP bound to go nuts cos i captained Rooney to catch my mini league leader. So close to making good ground as well. Cannot buy a bit of luck so far.

Ahh, i sympathise the one single week this same rival captained Nani (when he had more obvious options in his squad) he brought home a mega haul. Flukey git!

I agree. It seems a good compromise because there could be uproar if he keeps or loses both. Good luck anyhow.

    Replacement for Mr. I-scored-too-many-goals-and-now-want-a-red-card Yakubu:

Morison (CHE,sun,BOL) or Fletcher (AVL,LIV,qpr)? And your reasons please.

Stoke fans,(or anyone that knows), any updated news on shotton’s injury and when he’ll be back? Wondering whether to ship him out or stick and save my freebie?

Forget Shotton. My Wilkinson is back from injury and still left-out for the clumsy Woodgate.
