Promoting Bobby Zamora as a Fantasy prospect is no easy feat. There is his injury record for a start. Then there’s a lack of confidence, which has blighted him for long stints throughout his career. He is also rumoured to have had a rocky relationship with his manager Martin Jol, who has left him out of the team for weeks at a time already this season. When he is full of confidence and injury free, has the faith of his manager and a string of beautiful fixtures, though, then the rewards can be huge.

Currently all four of those boxes are ticked. Seemingly back in favour with Jol, he looks set to add substantially to this season’s tally of 61, which includes two double-digit Gameweeks. After being left out for five weeks, apart from a six-minute cameo against Manchester United in Gameweek 17, he has played the full 90 minutes in Fulham’s last two games.

Jol is adamant Zamora is well-loved, even referring to him earlier this year as “my main striker.” This is a clear indication he is back in the fold. The Cottagers boss also insists Zamora’s prolonged absence over the festive period was purely down to an Achilles injury and refutes any suggestion of a spat.

Fixture-wise Fulham’s upcoming schedule seems hugely appealing, with the team traveling to QPR and hosting (NEW, WBA, STK) in the next five game weeks. In addition, Zamora also appears to be high on confidence right now; his last couple of gameweeks have seen him notch the winner against Arsenal and hit the woodwork.

It is also worth noting that with a points per game average of 4.4, he sits just 0.1 behind Clint Dempsey. The American is already a staple of many January wildcard teams, despite costing 8.5 compared to Zamora’s price tag of 6.6.

It may well prove to be a rocky ride for those Fantasy managers brave enough to join the 2.6% who have already selected the former Brighton, Spurs and West Ham striker. There’s little doubt his acquisition would be a definite punt, but he may well prove to be that key differential to help Fantasy managers soar up their mini-leagues like the seagull Zamora once was.

Afternoon lads been thinking about WC strategies lately especially for those waiting till GW24 but I think its equally valid for those using their WC now.

I believe that over the next while ManU will score more goals than City but City will keep more clean sheets. This is based on the season ticker which interestingly has United extremely high for attacking points during their tough run of fixtures. Thus a formula of 2 city defenders and 1 attacker (Silva) could be the way to go. Likewise with United I think its worth having Valencia simply for value and Rooney up top due to not being allowed Aguero because of the 3 players rule. Also because Lindegard and Evans are so cheap its worth having one of them simply because of value.

    Man City 2 defenders & 1 attacker
    ManU 1 defender & 2 attackers

The remaining 4 defensive spots could be taken up from teams with proven cleansheet potential such as Newcastle, Swansea, Stoke and Fulham(debatable). These teams have players representing good value and form.

RVP is also nailed on to any WC leaving just 3 midfield spots and a striker spot left. The striker spot could be reserved for Ba when he returns from ACON. The interesting question for me is that midfield seems to be the real battleground for peoples Wildcard at the moment. No one really stands out in terms of fixtures and form apart from Silva and arguable Valencia.

Interesting read. I've played my WC this week & not gone down this path but each to there own I guess. I think there is big points in the near future for Kun, therefore want him ahead of Rooney. I know Man Utd will most probably do well even though they have a tough run, however I can't see them scoring heavily in this time. Certainly not strong enough to warrant 2 forward players.

The City 2+1 and United 1+2 strategy is not a bad one but there's two doubts over it - Richards just doesn't seem totally reliable for starts despite being first choice - really want him too - and United attacking returns are too erratic as you've seen over the last month. The scorers are not the usual suspects - Carrick, Welbeck, Berbatov and Scholes (lol) have outscored Nani, Rooney and Valencia.

Granted, but I also United had a lot of injuries during that time and had some pretty random teams named. This must be considered and in all likelihood I think Uniteds form will improve when they get a few players back. In terms of City they have gotten into the habit of getting 1-0 wins, it seems they have chosen to concentrate more on defense lately. The next 2 weeks will determine whether my theory is on the right track

True. The thing is right now thinking that united will revert to their normal selves is a gamble! It may well be that with such a huge squad this rotation crazy united is the new normal! We'll see but I figure SAF might be responding to injuries to so many regulars by using his squad permanently.

For sure, It could be best just to go with 1 United attacker but I would rather bank on 2 City defenders than 2 attackers. There seems to be higher points returns there. Of course it does rely on having 2 nailed on defenders

Man, I want to believe you're right in doubling up on city defenders.............but I just don't. Aguero has better form, fixtures, and price than Rooney. I just gotta have him. Valencia and Lindegaard, sure. Kompany and Silva, obvious.

But I just like aguero much more.

For me I'm just not sure about having 2 City attackers. 1-0 wins won't be enough. You would be hoping for a change in their approach over the next while.

Really struggling with my WC team. My gut is telling me to go with a strong front 8 and slightly weaker DF. I've done it so far and it's done me quite well (3rd in my mini-league 40pts off top spot). It's surprising how many times your bench player is needed with so much rotation and injuries. Plus Walters is a great player to play at home and bench away, so he halves your selection dilemmas in a way. But when he's at home (like this GW) I'm going to have to bench either Walters or Sess which doesnt appeal, so.....

My head says to go with a MF cheapie and have a slightly stronger DF and rid myself of the weekly selection dilemma. Plus I will have a more balanced side and it will be easier to make changes to the team without taking hits to change the make-up of the side.

    Whats peoples thoughts on this?

I think it is a wise idea to consider potential future transfers. Having the right balance in your team to make easy transfers down the track would be a sensible thing to do. Consider your overall strategy and how you want to approach the game over the 2nd half of the season, particularly the next 10 gameweeks

Have 6 different WC variations at the moment but I wont bore everybody with them.

But maybe my favoured MF (without cheapie) right now is

        Bale Silva Walters Sess Dempsey/Valencia

Balance your team that alligns with the points distribution. Approx:

      Gks: 15%
      Defs: 20%
      Mids: 30
      Fwds: 35%

Good first approximation to it! A good new way of looking at it - tells you what proportion of points you can hope to get with the best choice in each position and I guess from there how to use your budget.

I guess so although I might have the %s undercooked:

              Top scores:

              Gks 99
              Defs 91
              Mids 124
              Fwds 153

I'm pretty sure though that the defs will beat the gks.

I do think that is awful interesting. It means the most logical strikeforce is always Rooney/Aguero/RVP.. It means Silva/Bale/Sess/Walters/Dyer is too exxpensive.
It means four 4.0 defenders and MAYBE the fifth in 5.0.

I think this percentage ignores rotation in defenders quite a bit. Surely the 'leaders' of each category will be split that way, but that ignores the quality purchases as low prices, such as your Walters, sess, Dyer, who are good value, but not leaders.

              Back to Gaff's dilemna though:

Last year's winner tended to playone expensive defender with four ubercheaps. (I randomly analysed his strategy patterns).
Two year's ago, the winner played 5 ubers.

Do we think that Valencia will be
    effective with Vermaelen playing as
    Arsenal’s LB ??
Thinking of leaving him on bench

If he is still doing it, the damage should be restricted at left back. If he lets a forward in behind they at least still should have a CB to contend with and not an empty space... good article.

I've got Walters ,Sessegnon,Bale,VDV,Valencia,Aguero,RVP and Fletcher as my front 8 ... Cant bench anyone from Walters ,Sessegnon,Aguero and RVP ..they're all playing at home..I was leaning towards VDV but I guess Adebayor and Kompany not playing provide some positive points in his favour ..+ Bale is in sublime form ..
So it has to be either Valencia or Fletcher for me .. But dont know which one 😐

    Fletcher + Dempsey -> Zamora + Valencia
Not sure if Dempsey will score this weekend, he hasn't done much in the past 3 GW's, With Zamora being fit & getting the nod from Jol, Am sure he'll score a brace this weekend. Valencia has been a constant performer & even though the fixtures aren't favourable, Considered him on the form factor. Is dat a good move guys? Thanks in advance.

I'm thinking of getting Zamora in for Sturridge for this week but not sure (already have Valencia). Like the look of second option. You get a very decent attacking coverage from Fullham as well as an inform Valencia.. Did I see some people on here saying we should see Chelsea lineup before deadline?

Zamora in for Sturridge is a good option mate, I believe Valencia is a real threat & offers United coverage as well. Better to have a look at the Chelsea lineup IMO before you could go ahead with your transfer.

Ok, so here is my leading Wildcard team right now.

    Lindegaard, Vorm
Enrique (becomes kompany next week), Huth, Senderos, Caulker, Simpson
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Valencia, Dyer
    Sturridge, Aguero, RVP
0.2 in bank (1.1 when enrique is there over kompany)

Major concern is Dempsey: I am just not sure if he will be worth that much moolah when he could be Walters.

And before my Jafa sensei says anything, I have considered the cheap defense, but I just don't see where I would use the extra money if I downsized Huth for a cheaper defender. If anything, I'm looking for a place to PUT money right now, since I like Walters more than Dempsey.

Not getting this deviancy from the SuperVorm and EvenSuperKrul. You want certainty with your gks and Linde doesn't offer this.

Huth: why not Shotton? You know the deal with scoring defenders.

I agree with the move for Bad K. I am now looking at making a team around Bad K/Silva/Aguero.

I would put Sess in before Dempsey. See the Paulos article on Walters v Sess from earlier.

Not keen on Tony V and Studge either. Prob. better than you thought. 😉

Jafa, listen closely: Krul and Vorm rotate horribly. GW 31 and 37 are a nightmare. Even if I didnt want Lindegaard, it would be schwarzer over Krul all day long.

Is shotton nailed on? I think not. Why Huth? (and yes I know the deal with scoring defenders) Because I have extra money and I think he's a good punt for 5 of his next 6 fixtures. (and possible armband material this week)

Glad we agree on bad K Silva aguero

Dempsey is a major scare....but what with the money?

I can't really divulge my thoughts too much.

Dempsey has plenty of goal attempts but at 4ppg offers limited return.

Tony V again doesn't fill me with confidence of long term returns.

Gks: I'll need to investigate the rotation further but to my mind V and K rotate all season long bar one or two gwks.

Home and away they rotate fine, but not when it comes to difficulty of opponents. GW 31 and 47 are massive problems.

With awful united fixtures, 8 mil is exactly what I want to pay for coverage. Valencia's form is insanely good...whats the hold up? Is it just the inability to keep it up?

My thoughts on sturridge are similar. 6.5 is about what I want for chelsea offensive coverage. Also, it makes it easy to get Demba straight back in. If not sturridge, how to cover chelsea? When I was nervous about him starting, I put together a decent lampard plan that involved zamora as the third striker but it just doesn't look right. Surely those two with walters isn't better than Demps, Tony V, and Studge, right?

I am concerned greatly with Dempsey. I just think Walters/Sess is better.

I dont really like Utd's fixtures and with so many injuries in DF I dont really like the Lindergaard punt. He could easily lose his place again too which will make him a fairly pointless player really. I'm also finally off the Vorm wagon after buying him at 4.0. It's been a great ride though 8)

Why don't you get the Lindergaard punt? Looks like he's Man Utd 1st choice at the moment and sure Fergie wants to try and keep some consistency with the position. At 4.4m, a bargain price for Man U defence. Plus has the highest scoring keeper in the game as backup....

      Re Vorm and Krul's bad rotation;
I agree with the theory, they both have poor games GW31/37.
However, there is no way Lindegaard will play every game from here until seasons end. When you factor in the probability that he will be rotated for more than 3 games, that could give you a 'horror' fixture for your goalkeeper on many more than the two occasions that Vorm and Krul provides.

Just saying its not out of the question. Even if he were to get rotated for say 2-3 games the worst case scenario is Vorm comes into replace him who I don't think would be a "horror" situation whoever the opponent. I think its unlikely that having 2 keepers that rotate well will work out perfectly either..

GW31 doesn't look too bad, Liverpool aren't great in front of goal and Norwich always score.
GW37 I don't see either (at this point) keeping a clean sheet especially if Sunderland keep up their form, but by then plenty could change.

    RMT Wildcard

    Mingolet (Vorm)

Enrique Riise Huth (simpson BAE )

    Silva Bale Sess Walters (Mclean)

    Rooney Van Persie Sturridge

    Ok i expect critisism for
    1) PPicking Riise over senderos or Kelly
    2) Having two sunderland mids

Yeap, that would have been my complaint. I guess if you're skipping defense, you can justify Riise for his possible offensive returns.....only problem is the fact that Riise has done FA this year offensively.Bad pick, for me.

I think I would like the hear why the Sundy double up when they have crappy fixtures in two weeks.

More City, I think. I understand people who think they won't score as much, but I'm not one of them. Even if you do belive that, surely a City defender is in order? Maybe two.

can answer your comment by saying that in three weeks when Man c are at home to fulham i will be replacing Riise or Ekotto with Kompany , as with this current team i have over 1m still in bank.

I have chosen Riise ahead of Senderos or Kelly because i can afford to , also i have a feeling that after their shocking display last week , they are not as nailed on as people seem to think.

I dont see the rush to get a city defender , i have three strong defenders for the next few weeks

Doubled up on sunderland because Mclean is so cheap and has the potential to rapidly advance in price , Good bench material , although im actually considering starting him ahead of Bale this week

Holding BAE for wigan then dumping? i have riise, but if you want to keep the rest of your team intact, id downgrade to senderons. Id then upgrade one of enrique or BAE to a city defender, preferably BAE.

      There's more than that too
There is plenty of teams I have seen with mighty impressive history that have always gone with 2-3 big defenders (excluding Jafa who obviously knows his stuff)
But more to the point, there isn't many big-hitters performing to their price at the moment.
Nani has been inconsistent, Rooney hasn't looked the part for a while now, Aguero is good at home, but hasn't been so away, Mata also, Silva is just coming back to form now etc etc.
When you consider the cheaper attacking options (Sturridge pre injury, Valencia as a cut-price option to Nani, Sessegnon lately, Walters at home) all performing equal or greater than the big hitters there is cash to spend elsewhere.
Bar Swansea and Newcastle thus far, there is no cheap defenders that not only provide consistent clean sheets BUT also are sure starters. When I consider Swanseas fixtures and Newcastle without Tiote, it convinces me to get 2-3 big hitters, after this week I'll probably ditch Enrique and BAE for Santon and Vermaelen for a few weeks as they both have better fixtures.

Yes you would jump at the chance last year. It's just Everton have been so depressingly pathetic this year up front (where he gets his assists/pens) and at CS. Unpredictable and unreliable...

Yes, because how did that work out for Fulham last week?

Baines is a good shout, but not for his defensive potential, in my opinion. I think Newcastle or Fulham defenders are better shouts for cleanies this week.

So, Dead Zone Crew: who would you bench from my front 8 this week? Originally it was to be The Yak, but now got in Fletcher for him, as he also rotates nicely with Wlaters gw24 - 28, but this week it gives me trouble...

    Bale VDV Nani Dempsey Walters
    RVP Aguero Fletcher

Got some quite different answers so far... it seems to me to me between Bale, VDV and Nani. Any thoughts?

hmm, in hindsight it might have been better to hold onto the yak and you dilemma would be solved. I would bench one of Bale or VDV. I think bench Bale as with Ade out VDV could play better? who knows

Yes, I was thinking that, but then I guess logically I should just bench Fletcher and pretend I don't have him yet (and get his price rise as an extra bonus).

I'm currently on Bale, but I can't quite work out who would do better out of him and VDV. I like your point about Ade being out.

villa/wolves were 0-0 earlier this year and ive seen it said they are usually a goal scoring affair. Fletcher's ceiling is 1 goal i would say. I love my spurs but it is dicey starting two away to city. One of them is going to come up empty in all likelihood. So i would narrow my armband choice to whichever philosophy you agree with, benching the lowest ceiling player, or flip a coin and gamble on benching the right spur.

Valencia won't (shouldn't anyway) dominate Vermaelen like he did Ricketts, and Sturridge is still a little risky, aswell as the fact Walters and Zamora (according to ENR, haven't actually checked) have impressive home records.

If studge plays, do you still intend to captain him?

Newman how would you know if Studge plays? I've seen you repeat this. Had me confused 😕

I think I might take a last minute call on either Studge or RVP, depending on further news from the camps.

Yup that one seems fine. Wouldn't be bothered if you don't make it happen in gw23. If Liv continue with 5 defenders, no reason why shouldn't be able to keep a CS against any team, let alone wolves.

    Alreet lads

This could be for the final piece in my WC masterpiece, so opinions please.

    a) Riise/ Hangerland AND McClean
    b) Senderos/ Kelly and Walters

I would go for b) if walters is still oop. But I heard a few on here saying he has been playing on the right mid recently. In which case he would be useless. Does anyone know anything about this?

If the answer is b) should I go

    a) Riise and Senderos
    b) Haangerland and Kelly

Defenitely doubling up on Fulham and Stoke defence.

        Silva, Bale, Sess, Dempsey

With Walters, I will bench two defenders and best (apart from big mids have terrible fixtures)

Without I will bench one defender, mclean and best

I'm now looking at going two big fulham defenders and mcclean, then switch sessegnon to walters SWA, NOR. That way I get to see if Walters is back playing OOP, and avoid his visit to old trafford.

Note that I would go the Senderos/ Kelly route, but if I have the cash left over, why not splash out?

lovenkrands back in training, does that threaten best at all? yeah i asked about 5th mid because i think you are better off going cheap there, and make up ground in defense. Start with sess and leave yourself enough funds to get walters in two weeks, a Fuzzy Special.

No threat to best at all. Best will keep his spot until the dembas come home. Guaranteed.

NB I also guaranteed that Barfa would be playing by now, so probably best not to listen to me. But no threat from lovenKrands at all.

      B) with Riise and Senderos. Walters pens are strong enough by themselves. Not a believer in Riise but you get two nailed on this way and possible attacking points.

Crazy to be taking a hit for 2 SUN players - I'm swaying that way. Thoughts?

    Westwood & Ramsey -> Mignolet & Sessegnon

Would mean I can play the below this week and keep Adebayor for WIG next week:

    Mignolet
    JEvans, BAE, Simpson,Wilkinson
    Bale, Nani, Dempsey, Sessegnon
    RVP, Rooney

    Ruddy, Caulker, Reo-Coker, Adebayor
    Bank 0.2m

Knowing ade he'll get you 2 points vs WIG next week, he's got 6 points from WBA EVE WOL and don't take a hit for mignolet, just do the ramsey transfer.

    Gone with this chaps!

    Vorm (Krul)
    Simpson Evans Huth (Dawson,Senderos)
    Ben-Arfa Walters Gerrard(c) Bale Silva
    RVP Aguero (Morison)

Bit of a pain my MF/FW will be playing one of my defence in any combination, but has to happen some Gameweeks.
Trying Gerrard for captain, something different i guess?!

        1) You're right, i don't have the funds.
        2) He is in my 'never again' waiting room. Waiting for all time.

Basically i've been toying between Zamora or Fletcher for 2GWs. Classic form over fixture decision really. Many people commenting that Villa Wolves has been low scoring in the past, which is swaying me a bit. But reallyIi just want a safe pick...and I don't think there is one.

He's fixture proof, has scored vs mci and ARS plus chelsea's defense is nothing to write home about to put it mildly and norwich always score. Otherwise you could look at bendy for a punt 😛 😉

last week, in my coveted mini-league, only one of my rivals who is near me at the top played their WC last week, and he managed just 40 points. I am really, REALLY hoping mine goes a little better. If you are on your WC, what score are you aiming for to feel vindicated? Im shooting for 75. anything below 60 and i will feel like i should have waited, despite having 4 unavailable players i would have had to deal with.

i always seem to do better the week after i WC. which i guess means that this week's score ain't all-important. if you WC well and get lucky with some good mid term punts you might have a pretty poor gw but then rake in the pointage in the next few whilst those who went for a strong WC week score and failed to choose with more prudence fail miserably with their short-sighted acquisitions. or something

well put. guess i cant get excited that the team immediately explodes. its is built for the longer haul. still, i just dont want to go through what my rival went through, 1 goal in his squad, yak red, 1 cs, no bonus, it was miserable!!!!

      What are your choices...

Surman at Home to Chelsea who will most likely score (-1) but are leaky in defense so there is the chance he could score (+5)...
Nayor away to a resurgent SUN so stand a good chance of conceding (-4) but the Swans are a unique team who could "possess" the crap out of the game and end with a 0-0 result...

It's tough but I would go with Naylor to start...I think Chelsea may just hold Norwich back and if there is a goal it will probably be on the break which would bring Morison into the mix...I say Naylor...

I have been lurking in the shadows though...reading, observing, etc. It's been a tricky season for sure...but I've made ground in my leagues so as long as I achieve something there I will leave my overall ranking progression for next season...

I'm well. Just can't get a decent run up the rankings to get below 20k. It's frustrating. Always been like this for me.

I've had some howlers this season but you know we all know that those who come on here play the game far more intricately than the majority..which is why I have risen from the ashes in some of my leagues...

To be honest, I was bottom for a good few gameweeks so seeing my team climb the rankings, I feel much happier...it is just a game though right? (Yeah right!...its war!)
