Last week saw Newcastle make the first major foray into the January transfer market with the purchase of Papiss Demba Cisse from Bundesliga side SC Freiburg on a five-and-a-half year deal. The fee, thought to be in the region of £7.5m, sees Cisse link up with fellow Senegal international Demba Ba on Tyneside and affords Alan Pardew a lethal looking front pairing for the second half of the season…

With both players currently on international duty in the African Cup of Nations, Newcastle fans will have to wait a little longer to see the duo in action on Tyneside. Even if Senegal progress as far as the semi-finals – and the resultant final or third-place play-off- both will be back in time for the gameweek 26 home clash with Wolves at the very latest.

Cisse, having flown back from his country’s training camp in order to complete the deal, admitted the persistence of Alan Pardew played a big part in sealing the deal:

Newcastle have continually shown an interest in me. The time has come for me to show what I can do here now. I met Alan Pardew and I had a very good conversation about the future. I was very impressed by what he said and the plans for the club moving forward. The manager has shown a lot of trust in me by giving me the No 9 shirt here and now my objective is to repay that faith in me. I am very excited about the future.

The Statistics

The twenty-six year old began his career in his homeland with Douanes Dakar, scoring 23 goals in 26 games before catching the eye of French club Metz. Joining the Ligue 1 side in the 2005-06 season, he was quickly loaned out in order to gain more experience. Cisse headed off to AS Cherbourg, where he bagged 11 goals in 26 appearances.

Cisse returned to Metz the following season but, despite 32 games and 12 goals, he failed to convince and was, once again, farmed out to a fellow-French side, this time moving to LB Châteauroux on loan. He managed just 4 goals from 15 appearances before returning to his parent club for the start of the 2008-09 campaign. This time, he remained a first-team fixture for the next two and a half seasons, before SC Freiburg snapped him up halfway through 2009-10, with Cisse’s record for Metz standing at 35 goals from 92 games.

Cisse managed just one full season and a couple of half campaigns in the Bundesliga but was a major success. In total, he grabbed 37 goals from 65 games, a fantastic record despite plying his trade for one of the lesser clubs. Last season, only Mario Gomez scored more times in Germany’s top-flight; the Bayern man netted 28 times to Cisse’s 22. The Senegal international had already scored 9 times in 15 games this term, despite his club nestling in the relegation slots.

The Prospects

Let’s face it; Mike Ashley isn’t going to part with that sort of money for a bench-warmer. The fact that he’s been handed the iconic number 9 jersey sums up Pardew’s faith in Cisse, too; it’s pretty much a given the new boy has been brought in to partner Ba up top, with Pardew’s penchant for 4-4-2 affording him plenty opportunity to impress.

While Ba has proven to be one of the major success stories of the season, it’s obvious there’s an over-reliance on him to produce the goods; the former West Ham man has scored 15 goals, more than the rest of the Newcastle squad combined, with Leon Best’s 4 the second highest goal tally for the Magpies.

Cisse’s introduction should go a long way to remedying that. His pace, power and direct game should fit in with Pardew’s system, as the Magpies boss explained:

Ever since Andy Carroll left, Papiss was my first choice. He is a finisher with an already-established CV in the Bundesliga, where we have monitored him for the best part of two years. He’s a player who plays off the shoulder and wants to go in behind, but he’s got a little bit more to his game than that.

Newcastle have exceeded all expectations so far, sitting sixth in the league, despite scoring just 32 goals; the least of the top six clubs. With (WOL, SUN, NOR) all arriving at the Sports Direct Arena between gameweek 26-29, Cisse has been handed the perfect opportunity to get his career on Tyneside off to a flying start. Yet to be priced by Fantasy Premier League, he should come in around the 7.0 mark and, with his eye for goal, looks set to offer Fantasy managers a viable alternative to Ba up top as the season unfolds.

      No
He's been phased out by the ever improving Santon.
He only played midfield cos Ben Arfa hadnt proved his appetite and work rate and Taylor added a bit of defensive cover with Tiote away.
With BenArfa performing I cant see how Taylor can get in the team....unless theres an injury or suspension

It's going ok. Think my keeper(s) for the rest of the season will be Hart and Bogdan. Got the usual Fulham/Newcastle defenders. No Stoke players in my wildcard team. Need to decide whether to play Simpson or Senderos this week, which is my only dilemma. Also taking a 3 week punt on Vermaelen and Morison from Norwich. How's your team this week?

I will hold on my transfer, having a benching decisions to make.

Nice thinking on your WC. About Hart keeping for the season I think I am gonna be tempted by Reina for the double, Cech or going cheaper with Lindegaard. Beside that I would suggest to go with Helgusson then Morrsion, but I imagine that Morrsion could be a good call anyway. Bogdan? Isn't Jass back soon? That means no bench keeper. Play Senderos too IMO. Its time for Ful to play a boring game and keep a CS.

            Cheers,

Daniel I've also considered the option of one keeper for the season, but IMO it's too expensive, when Schwarzer and Sorensen is 1.5 million cheaper I'd rather have Richards than Hart and Skrtel over reina. aslways a chance Lind will be dropped/rested. Bar GW25 Cech looks an interesting option

Hart - misfiring Everton attack, Kompany back
Sturridge - See Swans conceding again at home, Wolves not great against Liverpool looking to bounce back from Bolton fiasco

That said, I am playing Sturridge and Fletcher as well as Hart over Vorm. Not that you need advice from someone in the 100,000's...

Everyone on this site has the same midfield. That said, I like it.

BAE - Awful fixtures coming up, doesn't score or assist as often as he should. Not worth the money. Like the rest, apart from Fletcher. He seems to score every time you bench him and do naff all when he's picked.

    Vorm – Westwood
    Simpson – Williamson– J.Evans – BAE – Shotton
    Bale – Walters – Dempsey – Silva – Pilkington
    Aguero– RVP – Morison

I wanted to wait until next week to WC-- but I got killed last week by waiting... (did Nani to Demps already this week).

2.6 in the bank. I'm thinking of bringing in Sess and VAlencia, or McLean for one of them; Kompany; thinking also of Dzeko for a few weeks instead of Aguero to finance some of these moves if necessary. Thoughts anyone? Stick or roll. Thinking of Zamora, Keane, maybe Fletcher as well for Morison, though I've had Morison since early in season and he's been great.

Also--in preparation for the WC, who rotates well with Vorm? Krul, who else?

leaving my two stoke guys on the bench-- a pretty good team I think given the fixtures (a Newcastle CS would be great!). So I am not stressed. But Valencia might be good to get in this week, and maybe an in-form upgrade to Morison would be good too.

get rid of Rooney to Adebayor for example, then upgrade either Dyer or Senderos. But apart from that it is a great team, love it!

Cheers for the help guys! 🙂 Ideas I was looking at:

      (A) This week:
      Rooney > Zamora
      Squirtle > Kompany

      Next week:
      Dyer > Silva
      BAE > Shotton

      (B) This week:
      Senderos > Kelly
      Squirtle > Kompany

      Next week:
      Rooney > Helguson
      Dyer > Silva

What do you think of those? Or are there better options? Cheers, really appreciate it! 🙂

I agree with these guys, Dzeko's away record is almost as good as Aguero's home record, and with Mario out his minutes will increase, looks a decent punt to me.

    On Jones:

However, the former Blackburn man's powers of recovery are evidently impressive, with United assistant manager Mike Phelan admitting on Tuesday Jones could feature at Anfield.
"Phil's character is very good," Phelan told BBC Radio Manchester.
"He is disappointed that, over the last few weeks, he seems to have limped around the football field quite a bit.
"But he usually manages to recover, so we're optimistic he can do the same again."

    Nothing concrete at all though.

i was really close to benching bale actually this week for mcclean, and i would've had 1 more pt lol. i think benching sturridge is the best choice because 1. they are playing swansea away and 2. chelsea are just not finding the net.

I very nearly wildcarded Sess in instead of Ramires but is 3 Sunderland players overkill? I want a Sun defender coz of perfect rotation with New and also really like McClean as the budget option...dilemma!

imo, there is no such as overkill. you want to have the players who are playing well and have decent fixtures. and also, you should try and work valencia into your team. so downgrade players like smalling to evans.

what Jafalad said is good but I don't think it's affordable, if it is do it, if not maybe lose Rooney who is not performing to standards that justify spending 12 million on him to someone like Welbeck or Zamora (or Bent) and then put Silva in for Ramires

    Anyone for Hugo Rodallega?

I know, call me crazy, I considered Torres (but never did it) Was gonna put Welbeck in my wc team but have discovered my main rival is putting him, I expect our teams to be quite similar but he's slightly ahead, Zamora would seem the logical choice, but Hugo looks like he's coming back to form and given he's off at the end of the season will want to impress potential suitors but has also stated he wants to leave with Wigan still a PL team. At 5.9 he could be an interesting punt/differential and I will have money to spare to upgrade to Zamora if he doesn't perform.

the reason Wigan haven't scored many is him. He's been injured and out of form since coming back from Copa America. Martinez left him out for a while, gave him a rest and let him recover and his return to the starting lineup he's delivered 2 goals and 2 assists in 4 games, and if you look at Wigan's fixtures after Spurs they have a run of games they'd consider winnable (if such a thing exists for Wigan) for about 6 weeks

Hi help needed with a couple of issues that my WC has raised.
    Team
    Mignolet(Lind)
    Caulker, Enrique,Evans,Kompany,Senderos
    Sess,McLean,Valencia, Bale, Dempsey
    Sturridge, RVP,Aguero

Dilemma to 1)drop Mclean or sturridge?
    2)Mig or Lind?
    3)Evans or Senderos
or Any othe changes that i could make to WC have 0 in bank
    Many thanks People
