Amidst the flurry of second half goals conceded at Fulham last weekend, there was one ray of sunshine for Newcastle; the majestic performance of Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman’s mazy dribbles, in addition to a goal and assist for Danny Guthrie’s screamer, will come as no surprise to Newcastle fans and eagle-eyed Fantasy managers.

Last season Ben Arfa’s flair offered so much promise. Signed on loan from Marseille, he scored on his debut against Everton in September 2010 but just a month later his campaign was in tatters after a typically agricultural challenge by Manchester City’s Nigel De Jong. Such was Newcastle’s faith in Ben Arfa’s recovery and talent that, in the midst of his lengthy treatment in January, the club signed him on a permanent deal.

After breaking down with injury again over the summer, he eventually returned to the first team in September to finally begin his 2011/12 Premier League season. It’s been a tough old slog for Ben Arfa to regain form and a starting spot in the Newcastle team, though slowly but surely he’s getting there. A Boxing Day goal against Bolton was his first in the league this term. An impressive display against QPR in Gameweek 21 followed, before Ben Arfa produced arguably one of the goals of the season with a superb solo effort against Blackburn in the FA Cup earlier this month.

The Fulham game has undoubtedly signalled a full return to form. It was his first 90-minute Premier League appearance of the season and he even earned a bonus point for his efforts; how many players on the wrong side of a five-goal thrashing can say that? So with this French cat well and truly out of the bag, there may well be handsome rewards for those looking to acquire his services over the coming weeks. Currently costing 5.4m and with just 1.6% ownership, he is also among the most talented differentials in the game.

There are caveats, though. Clearly, he is still threatened with rotation. To allow him a starting berth against Fulham, Newcastle’s utility man and free-kick specialist Ryan Taylor made way at the Cottage. It seems unfathomable that Taylor will not be re-installed into the side for the majority of matches and Ben Arfa is among those who could find themselves on the bench. It’s also worth noting that despite Ben Arfa’s individual display, Newcastle seemed a lot less defensively secure- they had shipped just 6 goals in the six fixtures leading up to the Fulham game.

Another issue to consider is his ego. Ben Arfa is certainly not backwards at coming forwards about his talent and is adamant his best position is just behind the strikers, where he can weave his magic. Pardew disagrees and wants Ben Arfa out wide, where he believes he can be more effective.  He also questions Ben Arfa’s work ethic in that number 10 role. So far Pardew has been proved right and Ben Arfa, conscious that he could be in line for an international call up for France during Euro 2012, is happy to just play anywhere for now.

With Papiss Demba Cisse also arriving in the January transfer window, it’s fair to say Ben Arfa’s chances of a place up front are further lessened, with Pardew keen on linking Cisse with Demba Ba up top. Senegal’s exit from the African Cup of Nations means both will be available from gameweek 23 onwards, though it remains to be seen whether Pardew affords the duo a rest after their international exertions and extended travelling time.

Forthcoming fixtures are a mixture (bla,AVL, tot, WOL, SUN, ars, NOR, wba) but he could be a great option to rotate with a Sunderland midfielder like Stephane Sessegnon or the cut-price James McClean. Wildcarders should note that the two northeast clubs’ fixtures rotate very nicely indeed over the coming weeks, affording Ben Arfa further chance to shine; that’s providing Pardew gives him the game time, of course.

anyone care to offer some thoughts on a 1 week pre-wc punt on the Ox? If he plays he could tear Bolton apart, but there is the doubt over him playing. It would also allow me a 1 week Rooney punt.

Check the lineups on tuesday and if he's there get him in, surely Wenger has to play him over Arshavin? 😉
Assuming Arsenal play on tuesday? Not so sure about the Rooney punt, he might just come away with a couple of contentious assists and a missed penalty 😛

in fairness you have known for a while that I was planning 2 1 week punts this GW, so you should have seen this coming 😆

Bolton away just looks too good to only go with RvP, and with Nani injured I can get just about any mid in the game, but Srteta may not be fit and Theo is not in form, like I said if he plays the Ox could destroy them IF he plays, but that's the nature of a punt.

Off topic but did anyone watch that E4 series "The Story of Film, an Odyssey" it was on during the Autumn. Really enjoyed it as it dealt with each decade of film making and went really in depth into world cinema. Anyway I purchased a DVD that they called "the best war movie ever made"

Watched it the other night and WOW....they were right!

    It's called "Come and See"..(1985).......get your hands on it. This is one review from IMDB.com ;

The best true-to-life war movie I have ever seen, and possibly the best movie I have ever seen. My eyes were opened when I saw this for the first time a few days ago. It made me realise what I miss 99% of the time when watching movies. So few affect me like this one did.

No special effects of note, no big budget, no set-pieces of note, no heroes, no redemption. I feel quite sure the director has really captured what war 'feels' like - unlike Spielberg and Coppola's depictions of war, this director lived through WW2 and the horrific siege of Stalingrad, as well as spending many months researching the massacres in Belarus, one of which he depicts in this film (this from the DVD extras, well worth watching).

The direction, cinematography, soundtrack and AMAZING acting by a first-time untrained actor in the main role are faultless, in my humble opinion.

I found this film depressing and emotionally draining, but cannot wait to watch it again.

Very quiet on here tonight. Either way I've got myself a bit lost in stats and thinking I might get Suarez next week. I know they have tough fixtures but Liverpool being Liverpool will often beat Man U or Arsenal and then lose to West Brom.
Firstly has he been training with the team? (I guess he is allowed to as it's a match ban rather than defined by a length of time like Kolo?)
Secondly do you expect him to start vs. Spurs or will he need time to get match fitness?

Not heard much of him. I bet he went home for a few weeks and he's probly been training the last few. If Liverpool lost to MCFC then I would expect him to start but after the turnaround against Bolton I think he will get 30/20 min to ease back into it.

      Just my 2 pence.

Suarez, Bellamy and Maxi as a front 3 would be something i'd like to see, I think it would work, drop Downing and Carroll to the bench, play 4-3-3 with Gerrard, Henderson, Spearing/Shelvey/Adam in the midfield.

But it looks like Downing isn't getting dropped, so that probably won't happen.

Bellamy has slightly dodogy knees so he isn't starting every game, but when fit he should start, he's just not going to play more than 90 minutes a week

Like the front 3 and would like to see that given ago.

I never want to see the midfield 3 of Gerrard Henderson & Adam again. While Lucas is out Spearing needs to play or we need another DM, Adam pretending to be a DM is embarrassing, he has 0 discipline along with passing ability and none of those 3 can really tackle, it just doesn't work. We were lucky City didn't take advantage but if we persist to play that 3, were in trouble.

I agree Goose. Adam simply can't fill that role. Spearing looked good before the injury and looked good last season when Kenny used him.

Yes, going forward. He still seems to mis judge the flight of the ball so often when in defensive positions, or lets wingers cut inside too easily...I just don't trust him

Yeah I liked Spearing and Lucas as a partnership and still would like to see them 2 with Gerrard longish term, I would like to get someone to fill
Meirieles role (and further back Alonso) we need someone who's good on the ball in midfield.

I agree 100% about Kelly too, Johnson has done ok this season but Kelly is a far more solid defender and wasn't actually bad going forward. I'm worried Enrique isn't playing great recently but I'm sure he will be back to his best soon.

Don't agree at all. After taking a while settling in under Woy he started looking a real player, tidy on the ball and even got the odd goal, he showed what he could do when he came on against Arsenal, we have no one as comfortable on the ball as he was and that's been a massive problem for us this season, waste possession way too much. Poor decision IMO.

Koscielny - why? If you want an Arsenal defender work Verm in.

Lindegaard - not nailed on. If he doesn't play you're stuck with Vorm.

Got to Ba, he's proven in PL, we know nothing about Cisse, we have no idea how he'll adapt to PL and whether Pards will throw him straight in or ease him in with some appearances of the bench. Thus for me Ba is worth the extra 0.3.

Is not using a transfer when you have 2 in the bank always wasting one?

I do not feel that I can improve/nor want to swap 12 of my players.

The 3 I would trade are Rooney, Bent, Gerrard. However I can't see any player who I would really fancy to score more points than any if these.

So is not using a transfer, wasting one?

I agree on those 3, apart perhaps from Gerrard I'd have Rooney and Bent this week if I could afford it, as it is I'll get 1 of the 2, but if you have nothing to change then don't use it, remember that in the event of a tie in an ML, it is decided by who has made less transfers.

You are both right that I will want them all out after this gameweek. Therefore perhaps silva in for Gerrard. I rate them similar scoring potential this week. But this leaves me with the ability to transfer Dzeko and RVP in for Bent and Rooney next week.

Doubt Ba will play next week, but Huth --> Taiwo and Fletch --> Ba looks a no-brainer when he's back. Thinking of Aguero captain too, despite having RVP and Bale. Just a gut feeling, have plenty of time to change my mind.

well according to FPL Wilshere not until end of Feb (which is when Gervinho should be back, making an Ox - Wilshere move seem good. Clevs on 5th feb (or Chelsea away in GW25) supposedly.

I’m wildcarding this week. Thinking of:
    Lindergard, Vorm
    Enrique, Evans, BAE, Simpson, Caulker
    Silva, Bale, Sessesgnon, Dempsey, Valencia,
    RVP, Aguero, Ba
Will drop Ba this week and then Dempsey the following week, while I’ll be bringing in Richards for BAE and then Jones for Evans as my next 2 transfers.

    Constructive (and destructive)criticism welcome!

Lindegaard and Vorm - better options for the money. Lindegaard isn't nailed on and Vorm has a tough run coming up.

Enrique - I don't fancy Pool defense on current form.

I'd be looking to get City defensive cover in asap.

Everyone going BABA for DEMBA, nice one. He's quality. It's probably gonna take me a couple of GW's for me to get him back in though as i have Aguero, RVP and Morison up front ATM.

Either that or a points hit but i doubt i will do that

    I didn't think he'd be back so soon - bad planning 🙁

I didn't expect him back so soon either. Haven't checked yet but I'm almost 100% sure my team would have more points if I'd kept him rather than sell before the Liverpool and Man Utd games and then benched him for ACON. Unbelievable.

    Team this week:

    Vorm
    Richards, BAE, Kelly
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Gerrard, McClean
    RVP (vc), Ade (c)

    Krul, Fletcher, Enrique, Shotton

Any thoughts on subs/captain choice? My main dilemma is whether to start McClean or Fletcher.

Saving FT so I can take Ade and BAE out for Aguero and Taiwo next week.

best striker for 7.2m or less.

I've currently got Sturridge, RVP and Ba in my wildcard team.

Not sure between Studge and Welbeck for that final place...
    Ore someone else?

          thinking of rotating between sess/ba/dempsey

esp dempsey away and sess vs tough fixtures.

Otherwise I can replace sess for Mclean to let Ba play week in week out and Demps for mos weeks...then i;ve got spare cash to upgrade the def
