Amidst the flurry of second half goals conceded at Fulham last weekend, there was one ray of sunshine for Newcastle; the majestic performance of Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman’s mazy dribbles, in addition to a goal and assist for Danny Guthrie’s screamer, will come as no surprise to Newcastle fans and eagle-eyed Fantasy managers.

Last season Ben Arfa’s flair offered so much promise. Signed on loan from Marseille, he scored on his debut against Everton in September 2010 but just a month later his campaign was in tatters after a typically agricultural challenge by Manchester City’s Nigel De Jong. Such was Newcastle’s faith in Ben Arfa’s recovery and talent that, in the midst of his lengthy treatment in January, the club signed him on a permanent deal.

After breaking down with injury again over the summer, he eventually returned to the first team in September to finally begin his 2011/12 Premier League season. It’s been a tough old slog for Ben Arfa to regain form and a starting spot in the Newcastle team, though slowly but surely he’s getting there. A Boxing Day goal against Bolton was his first in the league this term. An impressive display against QPR in Gameweek 21 followed, before Ben Arfa produced arguably one of the goals of the season with a superb solo effort against Blackburn in the FA Cup earlier this month.

The Fulham game has undoubtedly signalled a full return to form. It was his first 90-minute Premier League appearance of the season and he even earned a bonus point for his efforts; how many players on the wrong side of a five-goal thrashing can say that? So with this French cat well and truly out of the bag, there may well be handsome rewards for those looking to acquire his services over the coming weeks. Currently costing 5.4m and with just 1.6% ownership, he is also among the most talented differentials in the game.

There are caveats, though. Clearly, he is still threatened with rotation. To allow him a starting berth against Fulham, Newcastle’s utility man and free-kick specialist Ryan Taylor made way at the Cottage. It seems unfathomable that Taylor will not be re-installed into the side for the majority of matches and Ben Arfa is among those who could find themselves on the bench. It’s also worth noting that despite Ben Arfa’s individual display, Newcastle seemed a lot less defensively secure- they had shipped just 6 goals in the six fixtures leading up to the Fulham game.

Another issue to consider is his ego. Ben Arfa is certainly not backwards at coming forwards about his talent and is adamant his best position is just behind the strikers, where he can weave his magic. Pardew disagrees and wants Ben Arfa out wide, where he believes he can be more effective.  He also questions Ben Arfa’s work ethic in that number 10 role. So far Pardew has been proved right and Ben Arfa, conscious that he could be in line for an international call up for France during Euro 2012, is happy to just play anywhere for now.

With Papiss Demba Cisse also arriving in the January transfer window, it’s fair to say Ben Arfa’s chances of a place up front are further lessened, with Pardew keen on linking Cisse with Demba Ba up top. Senegal’s exit from the African Cup of Nations means both will be available from gameweek 23 onwards, though it remains to be seen whether Pardew affords the duo a rest after their international exertions and extended travelling time.

Forthcoming fixtures are a mixture (bla,AVL, tot, WOL, SUN, ars, NOR, wba) but he could be a great option to rotate with a Sunderland midfielder like Stephane Sessegnon or the cut-price James McClean. Wildcarders should note that the two northeast clubs’ fixtures rotate very nicely indeed over the coming weeks, affording Ben Arfa further chance to shine; that’s providing Pardew gives him the game time, of course.

Providing De Gea doesn't resurface like a dead whale from the Thames, I think this combo is a certain winner. The combination of a run of great fixtures for QPR for the foreseeable and Hughes' likely defensive influence make Kenny a great shout the fixtures dovetail so nicely.

Bomb out Raylor. I've had him since he was 4.2 and have now gotten rid. He's a fundamentally rubbish footballer, his fantasy returns and dare I say presence in the Newcastle first 11 cannot continue. That falling assist of his face/neck against QPR said it all

He struggles to play two games a week with knee problems. Couldn't play regularly with us at cardiff last year so prone to rotation. If playing I'd say 100% the best option, but can see him being rested or getting minimal game time against 'weaker' teams.

I'd say he's a better manager than AVB. (Of course I would, I basically have to)

Maybe not the best in the transfer market, but as a tactician against the big clubs he gets it right every time. Just don't mention Bolton, Norwich, Swansea, Stoke, Wigan, Fulham etc..

That's the one game Liverpool really deserved to lose this season, and possibly away at city in the league as well, though even then had good chance creation and 3-0 wasn't a fair result. Too many dull draws have left us where we are at the moment though..

I like the rest of the team. Love the Taiwo punt. I'm gona bring him in myself at some point over the next few weeks. Buzaky could be a nice differential. Forwards are strong.

Looking ahead for my WC team next week, i think i've got a really nice team set up...

    Vorm Lindegaard
    Richards Cahill Taiwo Senderos Simpson
    Sessegnon Bale Silva Valencia Beausejour
    RVP Aguero Ba

The problem is this team leaves me with 0.00 in the bank, with Lindegaard and Simpson probably both rising before then. I suppose i could still squeeze out Senderos if needed, maybe for Kelly.

Beausejour is a good punt i reckon. I have 5.0 to spend on a midfielder. He loves to shoot and i remember him scoring quite a few goals for Birmingham. Still, i will see how he performs over the next two games..

My team for this week is really strong i feel..

        Friedel (Vorm)
Brown Enrique Evra - to be transferred in (Hanley Boyata)
        Sessegnon Bale Valencia Silva (Jarvis)
        Adebayor RVP Fletcher

I think it's better to leave it as late as possible, i'm sure some new names will pop up before week 24...

I find it extraordinary that FPL has priced Cisse as high as 7.0. That's above the likes of Welbeck and the Yak, not to mention Morison, Fletcher etc., yet Cisse has yet to even breathe the smog of Newcastle and Britain, let alone get used to starting on the bench.

something to tempt people below proven EPL goalscorers. So probably 5.2-ish. If he proved his worth eventually he would soon rise and give us a bit of transfer action. At 7.0, it prices him out of the game imho.

I believe Ba's price was mostly down to FPL not knowing if he would feature regularly or not.

Admittedly his price does not leave me drooling with anticipation, and why get an unproven forward when Ba has been pouring them in? But there is always the chance that he will be even more prolific.

No cos the criticism based on the job he did at Chelsea would be justfied if he never turned things around. He has already been successful with Porto and built a great side. Portuguese league is not in the big 4 but you can only beat what's in front of you and he won the quadruple including the Europa so he gets credit where it is deserved hence the reward of managing Chelsea.

The fans and media can criticise as much as they want but if you have an owner with next to no patience to let things develop there isn't much room to get things wrong. It's a results business and he will be judged on his success/failure accordingly. He is obviously a bright manager with his own ideas but whether he has the time to implement them is highly doubtful. Not an easy job offloading all the deadwood at the club either. Too many managers and too many different era's at the club make it difficult for the manager to change the culture and mentally.

going for Lindegaard / Vorm myself, and will mostly play Lindy.

I figure I can't get a better goalie for 4.6 (Vorm's sell price), and already spent 0.3 to upgrade Ruddy to Lindy. And that's about as much as I am prepared to spend on goalies.

A nervous attempted WC team here. Got a bit of a problem on the remaining spots with getting the right combinations.

    Linde, _________
    Richards: Shotton/Kelly, BAE/_________
    Silva, Bale, Sess, Dempsey, Valencia
    RVP, Dzeko, _________

I wouldn't mind keeping BAE as Newcastle and QPR rotate well with him. Newcastle and QPR also rotate well with Linde in goal, see option A) and B)

    A) Krul, A Ferdinand, Welbeck
    B) Kenny, Simpson, Welbeck
    C) Kenny, Santon, Ba

    C) would allow me to have a more nailed on striker and a bench option this week as Ba is unlikely to play. In saying that Santon may not be nailed on

Your thoughts would be much appreciated, thanks 🙂

That's a pretty expensive midfield. Maybe room a for a downgrade somewhere?
