Jack Wilshere suffers a setback in his recovery from an ankle injury. Alan Pardew admits he is unsure whether Demba Ba and Papiss Demba Cisse will play at Blackburn next midweek, Frank Lampard is out of Chelsea’s FA Cup game with QPR and Chris Samba takes Blackburn’s owners to task as he looks for a way out of Ewood Park:

Arsene Wenger confirmed earlier this afternoon that Jack Wilshere has suffered a setback in training. The midfielder has yet to play for Arsenal this season but had been on course to return from an ankle injury next month. While The Guardian claimed earlier today that Wilshere could be at risk for the season, Wenger refused to scaremonger, saying only:

Wilshere had a little setback. We don’t know how bad it is. I can’t give you any news on Jack because I could be wrong.

The Gunners boss also revealed that Bacary Sagna may return after long-term absence this weekend, with Mikel Arteta and Thierry Henry also standing a good chance of making the Villa game.

Andre Villas-Boas admitted Chelsea will be without Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel for their FA Cup game with QPR. Lampard has failed to recover from a calf injury picked up against Norwich last weekend, though the Blues boss is hopeful he will be ready for the midweek trip to Swansea.

Alan Pardew’s Thursday press conference centred mainly on Senegal’s exit in the African Cup of Nations. With Newcastle front pair Demba Ba and Papiss Demba Cisse both flying home on Monday after their country’s final group game against Libya on Sunday night, there’s a possibility one or both could be ready to face Blackburn on Wednesday evening. Fantasy managers have already been drafting in the strike duo since Senegal’s omission. Over 8,000 have transferred in Ba, the fourth highest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player to date this season, while new signing Cisse, who was priced at 7.0 by FPL yesterday, has attracted just over 200 in comparison. Though Pardew admitted he was delighted to have them back, he was cagey over their prospects of appearing at Ewood Park:

It’s not as simple as them playing at Blackburn. We have to contact Senegal and they might want the squad to fly back together or whatever. I really don’t know what the chances are, I really could not put a percentage on it. But the plus side is they are coming back to Newcastle early and they will definitely be involved against Aston Villa. Cissé has literally only had eight hours here. He has to get used to that number nine shirt.

Sir Alex Ferguson remained vague over Man United’s injury situation this morning. Speaking ahead of the weekend FA Cup trip to Liverpool, Ferguson revealed no specifics, much to the frustration on Fantasy owners of Nani and Phil Jones- both have been reported as being possible absentees for the next few weeks. The United boss failed to elaborate on reports that Wayne Rooney hasn’t trained all week and would only say:

I can’t give you much of an update on injuries. Hopefully we’ll have two or three training this morning and we’ll be better by tomorrow. It is not the best situation for us.

Chris Samba has hit out at Blackburn’s owners Venkys as he tries to engineer a move away from Ewood Park. The Rovers skipper has already seen a transfer request turned down this month and with four more days left before the January window closes, a furious Samba has lashed out at those in charge, as he continues to look for a way out:

Blackburn need players who are 100% for the club — and I’m not. The only way to solve this is for them to let me go. It will be very difficult for me to play for this team again. I’m at the end of the road here. I’m not going to change so, for their good and mine, they must sell me now. I’ve got nothing against the manager. It’s not like he’s been given £100million to spend, he’s trying to do the best he can with what he has. This is between me and the owners. It’s personal.

Marc Tierney is available for Norwich’s FA Cup trip to West Brom. The left-back has missed his side’s last five league games due to a groin injury but looks set to return to the first-team for the Hawthorns showdown this weekend, according to Paul Lambert. Tierney had previously started every one of the Canaries’ first eighteen gameweeks.

Nicklas Bendtner is expected to be sidelined for a number of weeks with facial injuries. The Sunderland forward was taken off early in last Saturday’s game against Swansea after receiving an accidental kick to the face by Angel Rangel and with Martin O’Neill admitting the Dane’s injuries are worse than initially anticipated, it affords the like of Connor Wickham, Ji Dong-won and fit-again Fraizer Campbell a first-team opportunity up front for the Black Cats:

He’s got a bit more than a broken nose. It’s difficult to put a timescale on it, but it’s going to be lengthy. We thought at one stage he might be okay. The early signs, even on Sunday morning, were that it looked as if it might be okay. But he’s going to be out for a number of weeks now, which is definitely a blow to us. He has a few cracks and we just have to bide our time with that. That’s a big blow to us and to the lad himself, who was beginning to enjoy a decent spell of football for us.

Steve Sidwell has recovered from a knock that forced him off in Fulham’s 5-2 win over Newcastle last weekend and is available for the FA Cup game with Everton. Moussa Dembele misses out after failing to recover from a hip injury, while the club’s official website has revealed both Orlando Sa and Mark Schwarzer are “a week or so” away from returning to action. Schwarzer’s return will, of course, be of particular significance- the Australian has failed to feature since the end of gameweek 15 but is expected to reclaim his spot between the sticks from David Stockdale as soon as he is fit.

David Moyes is set to be without the majority of his injured players for the Cottagers clash. First-choice centre-halves Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka are still sidelined, meaning Shane Duffy is likely to continue alongside Johnny Heitinga in the heart of the back-four. Leon Osman, Seamus Coleman and Jack Rodwell are all still out, while Ross Barkley continued his comeback from a knee problem with a midweek run-out for the Toffees youth team. One piece of good news for Moyes is the return of Tony Hibbert at right-back.

I was losing patience with the 2 point return or 4 as captain!!

But the next bunch of fixtures look ideal for him with 3 favourable games at home and no FA/Carling Cup distractions.

I don't think Huth merits selection just now. he is not in form and 5.6 can be used elsewhere in the defence. Different story if he starts performing though.

Any thoughts on whether Nani's potential absence will reduce Valencia's points? Or Rooney's even?

Definitely not. The guy has been in terrible form this season and he hasn't been contributing much at all. Valencia and Giggs look much more creative and clinical. In Football manager nani's decision making should be 0.

Don't agree at all. Nani is a part of an attacking machine and a cog has been removed. He's actually been in good form, just not scoring or assisting.

He is a talented footballer of course but he is playing way below his potential. I agree about United moving forward as one and everyone plays a part but he is very frustrating to watch when he is faced with more than one option, he always seems to pick the wrong one. And his deliveries from wide areas and corner kicks especially is not good enough.

He is capable of bursting into great form but it seems to be in short spells. I think United with still be a significant attacking threat in his absence.

I think it will increase them, with Young out as well, and doubts on Carrick, United will be relying on him for creation. That being said, if he doesn't start tomorrow I think I will look at a 1 week punt on Sir Ryan Giggs.

I feel that without Nani and Young, then it may actually reduce Valencia's attacking potential, as most opposition managers will focus more on him. If they play Park in his Nani's role, then Park could be an interesting option.

Ibracadabra's Demspey post earlier reminded me of my top favourite points hauls of all time. What are yours? Here's some of mine.

    1. That week where I and many others didn't captain Lampard...but through the gift of captain substitution based on value and Drogba not playing I still snaffled his 50 or so pts.

    2. Rooney's zillion goals against Hull ...earning me 60 or so pts as captain during a doubleand an eye watering score of 140 something that week

    3. Huth's two goal haul...last season I think

    4. BAE's surprise double game week haul this season.

    5. Drogba's hattrick on the last game of the season to win my mini league by five pts and the FFS cup....actually my greatest ever FPL day.

was this this "page 2" option always on the transfer page of teams? i couldn't find taiwo but knew he was meant to be in there, then after a while of looking around qpr's team i found page 2. was it there in previous years?

      Guys...

Does anyone have any more information re: Rooneys possible injury? I have him and I think it maybe time to get rid if hes injured (saying that he doesn't have the greatest of fixtures either)...although not sure who for (I also have RVP and Aguero)

So far my WCT consist of the following:

      Vorm Mignolet
      Kompany Evans Kelly Huth Simpson
      Silva Bale Valencia Dempsey Sessegnon
      RVP

I can't decide on the other 2 strikers but have £15.5m to play with. For this week I think I might go with Dzeko and Zamora, but have room to chnage either for Ba should he return.

I could of course choose from any of teh other budget strikers like Morison, Fletchcer or Grahm
am or Welbeck in the combo.

      Any thoughts?

ok folks give me one word. Midfielder for 6.6 (or less) who has form (or is coming into form) has good fixtures, looks likely to get minutes and rotates with McLean. Am looking at Ireland but there is also

      Buzaky (not guaranteed starts IMO)
SWP (not in form just yet)
      Barton (could get banned)
      Ethers (fixtures aren't great)
      Barfa (not nailed on on
Cabaye (not as good without Tiote)
Ox (same as Buz and Barfa)
      Anyone else

Not sure about Cleverley yet, but this is why I didn't get Lindegaard in. It restricts you to just 2 United outfielders.

Maybe not a big problem at the minute, but I don't really want to touch my goalies from now until the end of the season.

      Anyone for Cisse?

Sounds like he MAY steal Ba's thunder...with Best, and Amoebi being at Ba's side this year - both Championship players in my eyes , I think Cisse could be a good bet and will reduce Ba's points - not bad at 7.0M

Anyone brave, or gioing to wait? Personally I think him and Zamora are my mid priced bets to rip it up!

I still think Ba will do the business. He's been red hot this season. Absolute snip at 7 mil

Bas a beast, will take codes a while to get up to speed, IMO won't alter Bas pts, and I jus heard on twitter- he's driving the bus home mon morn all the way to Newcastle !

I don't agree with your logic. Surely Ba can only benifit from playing alongside better players?

Zamora is more of a consistent performer than a 'rip it up' type in my opinion. He could do well who it's hard to say. Plus if you have Dempsey then it's hard to justify him.

Well theres only one way to find out...I think that Dempsey together with Zamora makes Fulham much more potent...so from my perspective since I'm really far behind in my league and with Fulhams good fixtures - may be worth a pop

I'll need to take a hit to get Ba in, so depends on whether I'll need to downgrade a defender. Having Cisse could be interesting though, I think he'll take to the premiership well.

Wildcard tinkering beginning to slow. My strategy is simply to go for clean sheets from fairly cheap keepers/defenders with good fixtures. Hence selecting a QPR defender! Gulp. Anyway Krul has 4 playable fixtures in the next 6 and Hennessey covers nicely for the other two. Same story for the defenders: I'll have at least three to choose from with decent fixtures over the next six and basically just keep an eye on fixtures and chop and change where necessary using the weekly freebie. Thats the plan anyway. Just one wish for the remainder of the season: Taiwo hatrick. That is all. Then I will be content.

I don't know why but I'd prefer Hennessey this week to Krul. I fancy both of them to concede but Hennessy to get about 10-12 saves.

So AVB has said that Ferdinand should absolutely shake games with Terry. But if Terry's done nothing wrong and has not apologised even if he did, why would they be shaking hands? Just to say 'hello'?

"why would they be shaking hands?" its just just the done thing nowadays when the teams line up @ the start of the game to shake all the other teams players hands, except bridge/terry 🙂

Only 1 goal in 17 games for Lazio but he's only 30 and he was prolific at Panathanaikos (47 in 61).

yeah, Fulham, if you don't have Schwarzer, get Senderos. I have Schwarzer though. you want to look at Caulker, or maybe Clark from Villa.

Valencia for nailed-oness, form and all round beastness

If it's for WC certainly Tony V, if it's for a punt consider Giggs, if Rooney and nani are both injured Giggs will be on set-pieces, including pens.
