Spurs miss the influence of Gareth Bale but drag themselves into the fifth round courtesy of a Rafael Van der Vaart strike. Everton also progress, as Landon Donovan inspires a comeback following another Danny Murphy spot-kick.

Landon Donovan
The on-loan American provide the quality that unlocked the Fulham defence, supplying two quality crosses which were converted by the heads of Denis Stracqualursi and Marouane Fellaini to give the Toffees the victory. Donaovan was a constant menace to the visitors down the right-flank and, in addition to his supply of key passes, also clocked up a number of goal attempts to emphasise his growing confidence and importance to the Everton cause. Sadly, his loan spell sees him depart Merseyside at the end of February and Everton’s fixtures in this remaining spell are not favourable, with City and Chelsea the visitors to Goodison. Even at just 7.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Donovan is a gamble, although that also makes him a ready-made differential.

Marouanne Fellaini
David Moyes is looking to maximise the goal threat from the Belgian, with talk of pushing his height and power into the impotent Everton attack before last night’s cup tie. While Moyes elected to start with Stracqualursi, supported by Tim Cahill, it was Fellaini who motored forward to provide the finish to Donovan’s delivery. Available for 6.1 in the FPL, we should monitor his progress as a goal threat in the coming weeks – having scored eight strikes in his first Premier League season, Fellaini could yet provide some value should Moyes unlock his ability to get into goalscoring situations and feed on the supply from Donovan and Leighton Baines.

Philippe Senderos
Martin Jol elected to bring Aaron Hughes into his starting lineup, dropping Senderos to the bench. Fantasy managers have been turning their attention to Senderos in recent weeks, having seen the Swiss defender establish himself alongside Brede Hangeland. At 4.3 in the FPL, he remains a worthy target, although last night’s team selection will cause concern. The fact that Fulham conceded two headers from crosses won’t bode well for Hughes’ chances of retaining his start, however. The general consensus appears to be that Senderos was rested, along with Bobby Zamora, and we should expect both to be on the teamsheet for the home clash with West Brom on Wednesday.

Rafael Van der Vaart
His 25-yard effort provided the one slither of quality from a drab Spurs performance at Vicarage Road, as Harry Redknapp’s side stumbled into the fourth round. Van der Vaart, playing behind a failing attack of Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor, struck before half-time, his second goal in his last 14 appearances in all competitions. That spell has seen the Dutchman notch just once in 12 league showings, a return that has seen his Fantasy ownership dwindle as Gareth Bale’s continued to deliver as a cheaper alternative.

Gareth Bale
Bale was kept out of the action last night, with Redknapp stating he was carrying a slight thigh strain sustained in training. Fantasy managers will be uneasy about the prospect of Bale missing Tuesday’s potentially profitable clash with Wigan on Tuesday but, in all likelihood, Bale’s absence was a precaution, with Redknapp sounding optimistic on the injury…

He picked it up in training two days before the match. He felt it a bit but it’s not too bad.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

How has this suddenly changed to urination

Now your actually trying to bring a public order offence into the debate

Like saying "Sure you will get arrested if you have a arguement in public....you cant defend hitting someone in public/roaring at them"

So yes its utterly different and no laws are no specific to certain pieces of marble.

If true as a United fan in no way do I condone it. This stuff has got to stop. Liverpool fans can ask all they want for Hillsbrough chants to stop (and they are quite right to do so) but it's said with a hypocritical air to it whilst they still sing about Munich. Why is 1 ok but the no other.

I'm glad you think so Dan, but I've met plenty of Liverpool fans who disagree. The thing it's both sides, United fans ask for Munich chants to stop, then sing about Hillsbrough, whilst Liverpool fans ask for Hillsbrough chants to stop whilst singing about Munich, so some people clearly think it's ok. I for one do not and that is why I don't partake in chants about Hillsbrough or Heysel. I lived in Liverpool for 4 years, I've met Hillsbrough victims families (and the family of Michael Shields). It's just not cool

I read a similar case to this last week where a band of United hooligans in the 80s starting singing about Hillsborough to LFC fans

One man on his own roared at them to shut up and show some respect..

                  They shut up.

In saying this a man is only the sum of his actions not ideas. If your willing ot allow it , to an outsider you and the those singing are not very different.

If you believe in something truely its an easy thing to do.

Why would you have to condone it anyway as a United fan.

Bizarre way to start a sentence. Akin to saying well cos i support this team it means i have a different moral stance when my team does something, and even when i allow them more moral lee way i still dont condone it.

In a way this kind of thinking it was created the problems in the first place.
I support X so therefore I allow X to do a small bit more.

        Evolution of immoral behaviour procedes.

Why do I start a sentence like that? Because there are plenty of United 'fans' who clearly would condone it, and so I simply say I don't to avoid such accusations before I post any other comments. As for having a different set of moral boundaries when it comes to my own team? See my post above, clearly not the case.

But stating even as a united fan i dont condone this sets the precedent that you do have a shifted moral code.

You may not mean this but its obvious this is the way it comes across. As i said your thinking should no way be reflective of the thinking of others who happen to support your team

The fact you would say this (clarify you dont agree with people who happen to support your team) further implies your thinking has been in the past. You have no reason to have to comment on it to make your position clear. By doing so as i said it only gives the impression there is a distinct lee way allowed if you support certain individuals.

I could easily make the case that if you set this odd precedent which you now have that every thing a person supporting united does anywhere in the world would require your take on it and distancing yourself from it.

You can see how bizarre this would get when you think about it Its no different from you therefore attacking them guys now.

You didnt need to do it as you had nothing to do with it. Unless you give a moral lee way at times as is how it comes across.

If it's true it reprehensible, but twitter isn't exactly a reliable source of information.

Some Liverpool fan was spreading rumours the other day that Balotelli had tweeted 'If Suarez is guilty of racism, then the whole United team are guilty of racially abusing me'

He said nothing of the sort. Balotelli doesn't even have a twitter account.

      De Gea is shit.. now

He is simply not built for English football atm, he is too slim and lacks the confidence to come and claim crosses. Liverpool knew this and focused on it.

However I believe that if he is given proper weight training to bulk up and given plenty of practice with crosses he can become great.

      That is just my opinion.

I haven't been harsh on him up until his last 2 or 3 performances, but no way is he good enough at the moment.

People are saying you can't blame him for the goals, but tbh you can. Yes others were at fault too, but he's in a poor postiion for both. Plus, not making a glaring error doesn't mean he played well, that's the bare minimumj, he's paid to make the good saves as well.

There's still plenty of room for improvement, and I still think in a few years he could be a top keeper, but he needs time, and the United first team isn't the place for that.

Although positionally he wasn't great for the first goal, and he certainly was too worried about what Caroll was doing but for the most part people seemed to have missed the part where Agger had a completely free header.

Definitely not good enough at the minute. Loan him out, let him make mistakes for someone else, and hopefully come back as a better keeper.
Never in favour paying so much for a 21 year old keeper, but he seemed to be getting the plaudits from everyone inside Spain.

I know they've been gloating and whatever but I'd to get some opinions on from Liverpool fans on this:

Was having a facebook convo with a guy I know in Liverpool (an LFC fan obviously) who was shouting about the champagne being on ice for 2 Wembley visits whilst United would win nothing. Now he may yet be proved right on both accounts but as I reminded him Liverpool have not reached the FA Cup final yet and asked him to name me any other club in the country that be in United's position in the league with the obvious deficiencies in our squad and our injury list his retort was

yes city are struggling in defence with injuries and their in a better position.

When I pointed out that Kompany has missed 2 games and Kolo is at AFCON and asked him to name one City player who's been injured long-term his response was to call me pedantic, and say, yes but they've still been missing.

I have utmost respect for the fact that United are managing to compete for the league despite a horrific number of injuries. But in all honesty the only players that ye have really missed this season are Vidic and Fletcher, the rest have all been reasonably short absences or else players who ye have more than adequate cover for. For example, Rafael returns when Jones gets injured, Valencia and soon Young return when Nani gets injured etc.

Liverpool in comparison have had very few injuries but have lost key players for extended periods, i.e., Lucas, Gerrard and Suarez due to his own stupidity. So I would argue the overall effect of each sides injuries isn't as different as it looks at first glance, today aside. I would have been extremely annoyed if Liverpool hadn't finished the job today as ye were there for the taking due to the number of players ye had missing on this one-off occasion.

United's position imo is primarily down to the fact that most of the teams in the league are sh*t and United have a fear factor that no other side in the country can match.

but his point about City is daft. Remember also that at one point we had Valencia at rb and Carrick at cb. I think that, other than Arsenal, no team has suffered with injuries the way we have this year, and certainly not City the way he said they had.

I agree that ye have suffered the most injuries of anyone this season, and certainly more than City have. City are starting to get hit by injuries and suspensions now, with Kompany, Balotelli and the Toure brothers out (you could arguably include Tevez too) but over the course of the season so far United have had more problems.

What I'm saying is that ye haven't lost many key players for significant spells. The injuries and general absences that City are encountering are to some of their most important players. Also if memory serves me correctly, ye haven't been missing a lot of important players in the big games this season, today excluded. Overall I agree with you but I just don't think United's problems are as severe as they appear to be.

United have picked up more injuries than most, and City have avoided them somehow or other.

They're missing their third choice CB for ACON, and their second best mid in Yaya. Kompany's ban is a moot point, he got sent off, yes it was a dubious red, but some decisions go against you.

Liverpool had Gerrard out for the first half of the season, Lucas is currently out for the second, and Suarez is still in the middle of his (dubious) 8 game ban. Thats 3 first team players,

United's injuries have been serious, but they do have the deepest squad in the league.
Vidic out for the season is the real killer, the others are mostly annoyances in that Jones, Smalling and Ferdinand all keep picking up knocks every few weeks, leaving Evans to play every week.

Of the rest, Owen, Fletcher and Fabio aren't first choice. Cleverly did well at the start, but is not necessarily the answer to all united's problems. Anderson isn't a great player, but would add depth. Valencia was out at the start, has come back and done better than young who has gone to the treatment table.

Main point is that united have the deepest squad, and other teams have also picked up 6 month + injuries (Lucas, Wilshere, Sagna, S. Taylor) and the rest of the Arsenal defense.
Looking at the teams they manage to put out week after week you can't argue that they're weak (apart from vs Palace in the Carling Cup) despite their injuries. Its money and success that gets you a squad like that, and its the squad and manager that keep United competitive.

I may be alone here but if you go for Lindegaard in goal, would Ruddy be so terrible as back up? I don't think he is ya know.. At least until gameweek 33 maybe. I know Norwich aren't exactly a haven for clean sheets but their fixtures aren't terrible. I think there is dubt over Sorenson, Mignolet and Stockdale with other capable keepers in their squads coming back from injury or maybe getting a run in the side.

If you get Lindegarrd, just get Krul, he may cost more than Ruddy, but he's a safer option (as long as you can afford it)

O'Neill will be in no rush to drop Mignolet. He is building a solid team who play regularly and are familiar with each other so he definitely won't be bringing in Westwood or Gordon (loves an injury) any time soon. If O'Neill's time at Villa taught you anything it's that he very rarely changes his side once he gets his side the way he wants it.

Think how long Gordon has been out and how injury prone he is. As much as he is a talented keeper O'Neill doesn't need to risk upsetting a settled side for the sake of playing Gordon with the added risk of him breaking down again. No logic to it just now.

Sunderland keeper or Brown/Bardsley are good rotation options when their fixtures look good. O'Neill's teams work their balls off and are always tough to beat.

don't think it's the worst and agree about doubts over sorensen, mig and stockdale, maybe less so over mignolet. i think if you have lindegaard you should probably get a 100% naile don keeper with him and at least ruddy is that. the funny thing with ruddy is he doesn't get many saves, which should suggest more clean sheets. a stat i saw the other day is everton and chelsea are the top 2 defences in terms of chances conceded, yet in fpl/clean sheet terms they're both ignored defences (and rightly so so far)

It is strange that he doesn't get more saves, so that does indicate that Norwich are not as bad defensively as you would take on face value. Plus he is nailed on. Having a look at Kenny too, but would rather get Nedum or Taiwo in a week or two when/if they are given an immediate starting spot so don't want two QPR defenders.

well 2 CS in last 2 bodes well, Cahill's signing seems to have caused Luiz to raise his game as I think before then he knew he was first choice as AVB never rated Alex, now he knows he has competition.

BTW James, did Essien get a run-out today? His return may also help shore that defence up, the man is a beast.

Rather disappointed with the United result as a fan. I shall not harp on about it too much as I am sure it has been discussed on here to death and my opinions will largely match those expressed earlier.

Instead, I can't see the desire to double up on the United defence to be perfectly honest. Despite both Lindy and Evans being good value, I am not going for both. I may have both come GW28 to end of season. But for now I see Lindegaard as the best option for United defence - De Gea's season is over IMO (apart from Europa league) and Evans may not play when Jones, Rio fit again.

    Thoughts?

I agree, I planned on Evans, have now switched and will have Lind (who must surely be nailed on now) and Krul as my keepers, with Valencia in the midfield, leaving that 3rd spot open to do Aguero ➡ Rooney in GW28 when the fixtures turn.

ok folks question, is having Verm too much in defence if I have Richards, Cahill, Santon and Taiwo. I can afford him, but it just seems like overkill when I can play Richards and Cahill every week and then rotate my 3rd (and 4th if needed) defender, or should I get Verm and forget Cahill?

Yeah it is overkill to overload the defence when you are pretty much playing a back 3 every week. Unless you get Verm and lose Cahill who is not even playing right now for a Caulker type player.
