Leaping like a sixteen stone salmon, Robert Huth is the scourge of 18-yard boxes the length and breadth of the land. Equally terrifying at both ends of the pitch, Huth’s aerial despotism has long ensured that he is as much “on” Stoke’s set-pieces as whoever happens to have the honour of hoofing the ball in his general direction.

The top scoring defender in the Premier League last term, Huth’s six goals were augmented by three assists, eight clean sheets and fourteen bonus points. Amassing 138 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from a starting price of 5.0,  it was no surprise when he was unhesitatingly elected to our team-of-the-season. With the Potters’ defensive parsimony a proverbial constant, and their attacking prosperity ever predicated on set-plays, a price hike to 6.0 this time round seemed unlikely to present a significant impediment to would-be investors.

Three clean sheets in the first four games seemed to forecast a business-as-usual campaign for Tony Pulis’ men, but with new arrivals Matthew Upson and Jonathan Woodgate now competing for centre-back spots a formerly settled defensive line began to betray an uncharacteristic uncertainty. A long clean sheet drought saw Pulis’ protracted search for a solution assuming the character of a rotational merry-go-round, and Huth often found himself out on a limb at full-back or even, at times, on the bench.

The restoration of last season’s centre-back pairing of Ryan Shawcross and Huth has applied a much needed prophylactic to Stoke’s unusually profligate campaign. The re-galvanised Potters have secured two clean sheets in their last six, and a goal and an assist last weekend in the FA cup saw man-of-the-match Huth back to his imperious best in the opposing penalty area.

Three home games in the next four make Stoke’s upcoming run an inviting proposition (SUN ful SWA NOR), and a January sale price of 5.6 seems eminently reasonable for a player boasting a strong record in both attack and defence. With the threat of rotation hanging ominously over Stoke’s budget defensive options, Shawcross represents the only other safe choice in the Potters’ back line, but priced at 5.1 and offering little competition to Huth in terms of attacking threat, a saving of 0.5 may well be a false economy.

With more attempts on goal in the last six games than the rest of the Potters’ defence combined, and the prospects for clean sheets never remote at the Brittania, Huth may offer the strongest value in the Stoke side over the coming weeks.

not terrible, id still find a way to either start him or at least move him ahead of dempsey. if you are benching dempsey, than you are expecting nothing, you have to at least think a toon CS is a better bet.

That was worrying me too.. but i just think hes off the form now.. plus Taiwos attacking returns might help too//

Actually what I have done is thought for reverse situation..

What if I had fletcher and would i keep him against qpr ??
Your timing of letting players go has gotta be right.. And fletchers run seems over.. so in that way I came up with Taiwo..

Go with Taiwo, if you're feeling it.

It's just that the only two defences I trust at the moment are City & Newcastle.

QPR maybe looking to attack, while not really bothering to focus on keeping the goals out.

Following is an analysis that attempts to compare the effects of the following transfer before gw25:

    Lindegaard/BAE ➡ Krul/Evans

This is my defence (players considered marked with a slash):
Vorm, Lindy/Krul, Kompany, BAE/Evans, Taiwo, Santon, Caulker

Here is my predicted choices for the 8 game weeks starting form gw25. Note: Here I allow myself to pick between Lindy/Krul and BAE/Evans for each gw, as to judge the impact of the transfer. I assuming that Lindy will be back from gw28 the latest

    gw25: Vorm, Komp, Caulk, BAE
    gw26: KRUL, Komp, Santon, Taiwo
    gw27: Vorm, Komp, Taiwo, Sant/Caulk
    gw28: LINDY, Komp, Taiwo, EVANS
    gw29: KRUL, BAE, Santon, Komp
    gw30: LINDY, Caulk, Santon, EVANS
    gw31: LINDY, BAE, Komp, Santon
    gw32: LINDY, EVANS, Caulk, Santon

Looking at these selections I think it would be rather wasteful of me to bring in Krul and Evans (especially Krul). As it would only be to play Krul in 1 single match before Lindy is well again. The only way for me to justify taking in Krul, is if I later trade out Vorm for Lindy.

Views on this? What would you do?

I already have Taiwo though. Which makes him the next alternative to take out for Evans. But I rate Taiwo highly, because I think he will provide a lot of offensive points. So he stays, yeah.

        I have Vorm+Lindy

Considering Lindy to Krul, the later Vorm to Lindy (if he regains his place that is).

I guess I have been refusing to look reality in the eye with Krul. I should have done this trade with my wild card last week, but then I would have missed out on BAE's points vs Spurs, but would have gotten Evans vs Stoke. Ow... my pregnant head

          Hey

From the above 2 Id go with A but for Mata > Valencia and Keep changing the 3rd striker spot..

Also, I just read your discussions a few pages back...

If its just not happening for a player, hell continue to be a bad FF option.. Re: Mata

Just look at Ramsey -Potentially could have been the biggest bargain of FPL..
but everytime he has a good game, all he gets are Pre-assists and tons of key passes which result in goals but are useless FPL wise.. Plus his shooting is irregular too..

RE Valencia - You just have to get him.. Think of him like a Creative Richards with cross after cross, runs after runs and most of them are pin point and he scores the occaional goal too..
If he wasnt injured at the beginning of the season, he would have been nailed on at Man Utd and been in all of our teams like silva/bale/rvp..

Also the reason why I chose 2 city defenders is lack of Yaya toure which directly results in less attacking plays.. I think mancini will go with a solid defense for the next few games which means more clean sheets..
Just the remember the DGW and those who doubled up on Spurs def and got all those juicy points..

BTW I have with Dzeko due to money probs and otehr priorities.. but have got 2 city defenders in my other team which scored 75 this week 😛

          What do you think ??

Methinks Valencia's honeymoon period in FFS could be close to over with the return of Nani and Young. Good chance he'll be shifted back to RB due to United's injury problems? Moreover, his stats aren't highly encouraging for his price, just shows that his crosses have been really good / strikers at Utd have a good conversion rate.

Good comparison b/w Mata & Ramsey, actually. Mata for the set-pieces mainly. Sadly the problem is not many are going to convert all his class crosses & free kicks. However, 2 home games in 3 was very tempting. He's always been a big-match player, even at Valencia.

Worth a re-think though. Cheers man!

You have got to be careful about Dzeko btw. He'll be the first one in the front 4 to be dropped if Mancini's happy they're not creating more chances. He could bring in an extra mid and then use Dzeko as an impact sub striker. I really like two City defenders for the next 2 weeks but I'm worried that BOL & BLA will be full of goals with Yaya possibly back too (Good reasoning there)

              Thanks..

Firstly, Young has had 1 good GW and even that was against a reserve Arsenal side.. So im pretty sure Valencia will keep his place..

Since his return from injury Val has started 9 games in a row.. and was directly involved(G+A) in 11 goals and also got 10 bonus points in those matches..
Based on current form and stats Val will outscore Mata..

IMO the only chelsea player to consider in FPL is Sturridge, even though hes been cold recently he can pop up with a goal/assist anytime..

And dzeko was my 3 week punt during balo ban.. hes out as soon as balo returns.. Im fully aware hes the 1st one to go from the attack..

IMO City defense guarantees points whn compared to aguero.. But dzeko was hard to resist with balo out.. Hence went with him..

I like A and wouldn't change anything. Once Liverpool's fixtures perk up you can easily do Richards/Komp > Skrtel/Enrique. Perhaps you could also find room for BAE/Kaboul once Spurs' fixtures improve, although I wouldn't say that's essential.

I like Mata in your mid, I really think that he could start scoring big when Chelsea start putting their chances away, especially if he takes the odd penalty (far from certain).

I'm not so big on Tony and I think McClean is better value than Sess and fills your 5th mid spot well.

I'm kinda surprised to see the response with A. Thought people would call me "insane" for not having Kun 😉

Btw I have my 2nd WC in place to bring in Liv/Tot defenders and Utd attackers. Hopefully this team will last me.

I brough Kun in for GW 22 thinking he'd be worth the 11m and the rest of my team wasn't as important if I got that right. In the end I went with Dzecko in my GW23 WC. I thought over the short term he'd be a better bet for points and it wouldn't mess my team up too much.

yes I totally agree with this statement. Since Dempsey, Bale, Sess and Silva are so highly owned, a move at the right time could really pay off.

Silva and Bale are probably season keepers, unless they get injured or their form dramatically changes.

Dempsey, Valencia and Sess are riding their form at the moment but it could easily change. I think Sess is the biggest risk, followed by Valencia. Dempsey's stats are good at the moment so there's not really any signs of his returns drying up, whereas Sess and Valencia's aren't as good as their returns would suggest.

The question is who will you replace them with? The only obvious choices at the moment are Mata, Nani and VDV. Of those, Nani is widely owned anyway, VDV is an injury liability. Mata is the only on who I can see as fitting the bill. I suppose there could be some £5-7m players who hit form (e.g. Ireland, Ben Arfa, Sigurdsson) but I doubt you'd shift Silva/Bale for any of those.

    Rangel – Santon – Richards
    Bale – Dyer – Valencia – Dempsey
    RVP(c) – Aguero – Sturridge

    Sorensen – Arfa, BAE, Kelly.

    1) Are any of the matches likely to be cancelled this gw because of bad weather?
    2) I am worried about shotton's playing time so was thinking of the following moves

i would find it much more comforting if rvp DIDNT have 70% of the poll votes and everyone else was under 6%, now if he draws a blank again we all look stupid 🙂

I'm slightly superstitious about my captain playing in the early Saturday kick-off aswell.. in the same way that I never include early games in an accumulator for some reason. Also, I think the City game is on ESPN (which is freeview this weekend) meaning I could watch it.

Probably still bottle it and go RVP though. Almost everyone will do the same so the threat of losing out is too big.

    Morning All.

Bit of advice/confirmation please. On my WC at last, and currently have BAE, Walker and Enrique. Looking to sell them all to get:

Krul, Bogdan (rotate very well for next 5 weeks, and still have anothe WC left)
    Kompany, ShawX, Evans, Simpson, Kelly
Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Tony V, Sess
    RVP, Aguero, Ba

Had Enrique all season, so will lose 0.5m. Am I doing the right thing?

      Rid yourself of sess.

bodgan>mignolet, plan for future, just because you have another WC does not justify having a bolton gk, who will eventually be replaced with jussi.

      Id go

      Krul/Mignolet
      Komp- Huth- Evans- Simp/Santon- Kelly
Silva- Bale- Demp- Valencia- McClean(rather than sess- tough fixtures)
RVP- Aguero- Ba(or Djibril for a couple weeks)

        Thanks Acquafresca. Appreciate your thoughts.

With the Krul/Migs combo, Migs has two tough fixtures at home coming up, whereas Bogdan has 2 excellent ones. Jussi has been fit for a few weeks now, and is still benched. I do see your point though, and Sunderland in form.

I think Sess is playing that well (as are Sunderland) that I don't see why he can't continue to produce even during tougher fixtures. I have made the mistake before of going purely on fixtures, and I see a lot of folk wanna get rid so quickly.

Keeping Simpson over Santon as had him since start.

Would go Huth over ShawX if I had the funds (only 0.3m left).

So I am good to sell Walker, BAE and Enrique?

Cheers! I have had a good run the last couple of weeks, especially given that I have not used the WC.

I agree with doing the Ba transfer this week, and Silva next week, based on fixtures and price rises. Defense looks good, but Dawson to Man City defender looks necessary, but depends if you are happy to take the hit, and if so, I would do it this week. Apart from that all looks good to me.

Losing the 0.5m is only relevant if you plan to get Enrique back at any point. Until you buy him back at a price which is higher than you sold for, then you've lost nothing as it wasn't 'tangible' value.

I'd had Enrique from GW1 until last week when I shipped on WC. Fixtures are just too dodgy to tie decent value up in a defender, although with hindsight I could have held on to him for a week more!

Well, that's the other issue. Will I want him back when his fixtures ease, and Liverpool have an annoying habit of producing the goods against better teams. However, I just can't justify keeping him. Same with BAE.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I would have sold last week too if I had played my WC.

If Stoke are gonna get cleanies, surely it has to be in the fex GWs, and the Taiwo move looks far to early for me, even if they have great fixtures. Can't see cleanies from QPR.
