Leaping like a sixteen stone salmon, Robert Huth is the scourge of 18-yard boxes the length and breadth of the land. Equally terrifying at both ends of the pitch, Huth’s aerial despotism has long ensured that he is as much “on” Stoke’s set-pieces as whoever happens to have the honour of hoofing the ball in his general direction.

The top scoring defender in the Premier League last term, Huth’s six goals were augmented by three assists, eight clean sheets and fourteen bonus points. Amassing 138 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from a starting price of 5.0,  it was no surprise when he was unhesitatingly elected to our team-of-the-season. With the Potters’ defensive parsimony a proverbial constant, and their attacking prosperity ever predicated on set-plays, a price hike to 6.0 this time round seemed unlikely to present a significant impediment to would-be investors.

Three clean sheets in the first four games seemed to forecast a business-as-usual campaign for Tony Pulis’ men, but with new arrivals Matthew Upson and Jonathan Woodgate now competing for centre-back spots a formerly settled defensive line began to betray an uncharacteristic uncertainty. A long clean sheet drought saw Pulis’ protracted search for a solution assuming the character of a rotational merry-go-round, and Huth often found himself out on a limb at full-back or even, at times, on the bench.

The restoration of last season’s centre-back pairing of Ryan Shawcross and Huth has applied a much needed prophylactic to Stoke’s unusually profligate campaign. The re-galvanised Potters have secured two clean sheets in their last six, and a goal and an assist last weekend in the FA cup saw man-of-the-match Huth back to his imperious best in the opposing penalty area.

Three home games in the next four make Stoke’s upcoming run an inviting proposition (SUN ful SWA NOR), and a January sale price of 5.6 seems eminently reasonable for a player boasting a strong record in both attack and defence. With the threat of rotation hanging ominously over Stoke’s budget defensive options, Shawcross represents the only other safe choice in the Potters’ back line, but priced at 5.1 and offering little competition to Huth in terms of attacking threat, a saving of 0.5 may well be a false economy.

With more attempts on goal in the last six games than the rest of the Potters’ defence combined, and the prospects for clean sheets never remote at the Brittania, Huth may offer the strongest value in the Stoke side over the coming weeks.

Ok, I think my WC has come down to this - as I'll be wildcarding again in GW28, which is best and why?

    a) JEvans & Walters
    b) Vermaelen & Moses

    Sorenson, Ruddy
    Richards, XXX, Simpson, Williamson, Caulker
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Sigurdsson, XXX

This is only for 4 weeks and Sorenson has 3 good home fixtures in the next 4. I got Ruddy at 4.0m so it gives more $ to use elsewhere.

this is the perfect scenario to go verm IMO if you are committed to using your WC in gw28. too expensive to own for long but a fantastic differential and BLA could pay off big time fast. Walters has dropped back to midfield and stoke attack isnt clicking ATM.

ideally though you want a cheap mid to rotate with Sig. moses is a thought but what about mcclean?

Yeah, I'm swaying towards Moses & Verm for those exact reasons! Mclean is on form, but I'd probably only want to play Sigs in GW25 (and maybe 27) and Moses (EVE, AVL, SWA) has far better fixtures than Mclean (sto, wba, new).

I am on WC myself and have both Vermaelen and Moses atm. However, I'm also considering other cheap midfielders (Gylfi, McClean etc.), but I am also keeping Sess and unsure on who to be my fifth midfielder.

But back to your question I would definitely go for the Verm&Moses combo out of those two, brought Walters out myself last night. 😉

Cheers. It's going to be hard ditching Sess, but I'm a fixtures guy and his aren't great for the next 4 GWs...If Wigan are to have any shot at staying up, they need points over the next 4 weeks, and Moses looks the best shout at getting them for Wigan.

    On Wildcard.
    Currently Krul and Vorm.
But would like to go with either Krul+Mignolet or Krul+Bogdan.

Is Bogdan nailed to start ? His fixtures rotate nicely with Krul.

2 weeks ago i WC'ed and lost 2.0 mil on my team value
2 weeks later ive cut my rank by more than half from 55k to 27k (i know, still not impressive), and ive already earned 1.3 mil back.

i see many "worried about selling so-and-so because i bought him at" posts on here. DONT worry about it. Just put the best combination of 15 players you can afford, thinking as long term as you can, and do it.

the January WC is the ideal time to utilize the value you have built throughout the season and build a great team with a little extra cash, its the worst time to worry about team value.

this has been a public service announcement from Fuzzy Aloysius Warbles III.

Excellent advice chap, I'm in the middle of wildcard and last night sold Walters for Valencia based on the long-term. Despite fixtures, Valencia's form is irrestible whereas Walters on the wing really only has pens - and he missed his last one, so who knows if they're even a gimme now? I bought him at £6m but chances are Tonio'll be out of sight price wise come GW28...

Been chatting to a colleague about team selection for the weekend...specifically keepers...Villa have Keane boosting the attack force and Villa now scoring goals...Vorm playing well and they could hold the ball all game against West Brom...then there is Home game vs Away game issue...by that time by head exploded and after scraping it all together I realise that I should go with my first instinct / gut so whatever you thought first...go with it...

Last GW I had Bale as captain and switched because I saw he was doubtful...again, gut / instinct...I may roll with that concept for the next few and see...

    Krul
    Santon, BAE, Richards
    Sess, McClean, Dempsey, Silva, Bale
    Aguero, V Persie
    (Vorm, Sturridge, Cahill, Kelly [Ful])

I have one free transfer... Two players I'd like to move on are Sturridge and BAE. Any thoughts on best way to do it? Considering Zamora in for Sturridge. Or I can get Ba instead, if I downgrade BAE for a hit. Or do nothing and shift them both out for free next week... Thanks!

i think he was just meant as cover but he's done well so being rewarded with a run in the team

having said that, Jussi is a quality keeper and WIG might be just the game to bring him back gently.

Rank defenders for this GW only, please!

    Richards
    Santon
    Taiwo
    JEvans
    Huth

    I'm currently thinking

    1. Richards
    2. Huth
    3. Santon
    4. Taiwo
    5. JEvans

    Anyone think differently?

i think Clichy will start both game vs Fulham and Aston Villa, but the game vs Blackburn is uncertain

          ManC fixture

          04 February 2012 17:30 H Fulham Barclays Premier League
12 February 2012 16:00 A Aston Villa Barclays Premier League
          16 February 2012 20:05 A Porto Europa League
          22 February 2012 17:00 H Porto Europa League
25 February 2012 17:30 H Blackburn Rovers Barclays Premier League
          March 12
03 March 2012 15:00 H Bolton Wanderers Barclays Premier League

I checked ManC Champions league fixtures and i see Mancini often used Clichy in important game. so if he needs Clichy for the game vs Porto (at home, 22/2), then Clichy maybe rested vs Rover 3 days later

Also the whole point in getting a City defender is to bank on the CS they should more or less get against the inferior sides at home. The last thing you want to do is hope your City player is playing and risking him being subbed. Add to that Clichy's assist/goal potential is not in comparison with Richards & Kompany.
