Leaping like a sixteen stone salmon, Robert Huth is the scourge of 18-yard boxes the length and breadth of the land. Equally terrifying at both ends of the pitch, Huth’s aerial despotism has long ensured that he is as much “on” Stoke’s set-pieces as whoever happens to have the honour of hoofing the ball in his general direction.

The top scoring defender in the Premier League last term, Huth’s six goals were augmented by three assists, eight clean sheets and fourteen bonus points. Amassing 138 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from a starting price of 5.0,  it was no surprise when he was unhesitatingly elected to our team-of-the-season. With the Potters’ defensive parsimony a proverbial constant, and their attacking prosperity ever predicated on set-plays, a price hike to 6.0 this time round seemed unlikely to present a significant impediment to would-be investors.

Three clean sheets in the first four games seemed to forecast a business-as-usual campaign for Tony Pulis’ men, but with new arrivals Matthew Upson and Jonathan Woodgate now competing for centre-back spots a formerly settled defensive line began to betray an uncharacteristic uncertainty. A long clean sheet drought saw Pulis’ protracted search for a solution assuming the character of a rotational merry-go-round, and Huth often found himself out on a limb at full-back or even, at times, on the bench.

The restoration of last season’s centre-back pairing of Ryan Shawcross and Huth has applied a much needed prophylactic to Stoke’s unusually profligate campaign. The re-galvanised Potters have secured two clean sheets in their last six, and a goal and an assist last weekend in the FA cup saw man-of-the-match Huth back to his imperious best in the opposing penalty area.

Three home games in the next four make Stoke’s upcoming run an inviting proposition (SUN ful SWA NOR), and a January sale price of 5.6 seems eminently reasonable for a player boasting a strong record in both attack and defence. With the threat of rotation hanging ominously over Stoke’s budget defensive options, Shawcross represents the only other safe choice in the Potters’ back line, but priced at 5.1 and offering little competition to Huth in terms of attacking threat, a saving of 0.5 may well be a false economy.

With more attempts on goal in the last six games than the rest of the Potters’ defence combined, and the prospects for clean sheets never remote at the Brittania, Huth may offer the strongest value in the Stoke side over the coming weeks.

I just logged on to check Huth's stats as am having doubts about bringing him tomorrow for BAE (as I had planned from the wildcard last week).

Think I will stick with my gut and bring him in, BAE's fixtures are terrible and in the price range there doesn't seem many solid like for like replacements. The only other one interesting me is Santon and that's obviously complete different price range.

    Current defence is

    Lindegaard, Krul
Richards, BAE, J Evans, Taiwo, Kelly

I took the gamble on Linde on Tues before the deadline as Krul doesn't have terrible away fixtures, which worked out okay so far!

17.2M for a GK, MID and FWD on WC.

    1 – Mignolet/Ruddy, Huth, Ba

Yeah QPR have some great fixtures, and am contemplating their defensive vs attacking returns.

I know I would want Ba from GW26 onwards, so get him now and use transfers for any injuries later or short term punt on Zamora/Cisse. That is essentialy what my WC comes down to.

well I have Evans and Cisse atm but am still wondering about Ba in GW26, would need to downgrade Evans at a later date, so it's Evans and either of the Cisse's or Zamora
                or

a 4.2 or less defender and Ba (and who to get? double on newc with Williamson, on Fulham with Kelly?, McAuley, Knight, Steinsson, Wilko or someone else?

Can you not downgrade elsewhere, Evans fixtures getting better after GW26?

The 2nd option would be McAuley for caulker for you 4.2 M defender.

Yes, it's very nice. Hard to find fault. My only tiny concern is having 2 Man Utd players with their fixtures. Saying that, they could easily do well despite those tough fixtures, and anyway you will want to stock up on Utd come GW28.

Go with it, it looks great..

Yeah more than happy to have 2 Utd players, especially as they're not taking up much budget, both offer great value despite fixtures for me.

Thanks for feedback, nice rank btw, you'll be shortly joining the club I joined for the very first time in my FPL career this week, the mark of the respectable FPL manager, the top 10k

    Krul/Vorm

Richards, Simpson, ( BAE, Enrique, Shotton)

    Bale, Silva, Dempsey, Sess, McClean

    RVP, Aguero, Ba

Defenders in brackets are for the chop with BAE last to go. Axe is sharp for others too. Any recommendation? The next four weeks have some good fixtures but rotation will be tricky even after WC I think.

My worry is that Richards will always be threathened by Zabaleta in the odd game and that I would have both Sorensen AND Huth.

Are those acceptable risks to take? I agree with FFS: Huth could really pay off over the next few weeks.
But Second option is less risky I would say.

Am taking a look at QPR Def. and while they have some good new players, it could take a few weeks to gel. I'm happy with Richards going forward. Risk with both Huth and Taiwo there imo
