Leaping like a sixteen stone salmon, Robert Huth is the scourge of 18-yard boxes the length and breadth of the land. Equally terrifying at both ends of the pitch, Huth’s aerial despotism has long ensured that he is as much “on” Stoke’s set-pieces as whoever happens to have the honour of hoofing the ball in his general direction.

The top scoring defender in the Premier League last term, Huth’s six goals were augmented by three assists, eight clean sheets and fourteen bonus points. Amassing 138 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from a starting price of 5.0,  it was no surprise when he was unhesitatingly elected to our team-of-the-season. With the Potters’ defensive parsimony a proverbial constant, and their attacking prosperity ever predicated on set-plays, a price hike to 6.0 this time round seemed unlikely to present a significant impediment to would-be investors.

Three clean sheets in the first four games seemed to forecast a business-as-usual campaign for Tony Pulis’ men, but with new arrivals Matthew Upson and Jonathan Woodgate now competing for centre-back spots a formerly settled defensive line began to betray an uncharacteristic uncertainty. A long clean sheet drought saw Pulis’ protracted search for a solution assuming the character of a rotational merry-go-round, and Huth often found himself out on a limb at full-back or even, at times, on the bench.

The restoration of last season’s centre-back pairing of Ryan Shawcross and Huth has applied a much needed prophylactic to Stoke’s unusually profligate campaign. The re-galvanised Potters have secured two clean sheets in their last six, and a goal and an assist last weekend in the FA cup saw man-of-the-match Huth back to his imperious best in the opposing penalty area.

Three home games in the next four make Stoke’s upcoming run an inviting proposition (SUN ful SWA NOR), and a January sale price of 5.6 seems eminently reasonable for a player boasting a strong record in both attack and defence. With the threat of rotation hanging ominously over Stoke’s budget defensive options, Shawcross represents the only other safe choice in the Potters’ back line, but priced at 5.1 and offering little competition to Huth in terms of attacking threat, a saving of 0.5 may well be a false economy.

With more attempts on goal in the last six games than the rest of the Potters’ defence combined, and the prospects for clean sheets never remote at the Brittania, Huth may offer the strongest value in the Stoke side over the coming weeks.

I cannot waste a trannie on a goalie as I have them and other options planned out until then - Im going to brave it out and go for lindegaard. De Gea definitely has a shot to prove himself from now until then, but the fixtures dont fall too favorably. De Gea is not ready for the title of United #1. Im sticking, if I am wrong, then at GW 28 I may just have to pay for the mistake, but any other option right now costs more and I need the funds. I also suspect Lindegaard will be back sooner than GW 28. GW 28 is 5 solid weeks from now - a bit over 6 weeks from when the problem diagnosed. He should be ready in 4.

    Currently @ Winter WC.

Really contemplatin keeping Sess and playing with the same front 7 every GW:

    Silva,Bale,Valencia,Sess,(Ferguson)
    RVP,Aguero,Sturridge

With funds to do Sturridge->Ba, how bad a strategy is this?

Backline atm: Kompany,Evans,Enrique,Simpson,Kelly.. so not really a prob to play with 4 defenders either if I pick up an injury.

Looking at the top managers, for instance in the "Top 100 anytime" or "Top 1000 anytime" league, no one seem to follow this strategy though, so I probably should downgrade Sess and spread the money elsewhere. Just tempted!

What are your thoughts on the introduction of the vice captain this season. My rival was stupid enough to captain Gerrard but gets rewarded with double Bale points. I know it works borh ways and I could be the one to benefit the next time but I like the idea of getting the captain choice right and you get rewarded, get it wrong and you don't. He still has to choose his vc too. And the majority of the time your captain will play. It's just like having subs really. Guy below me this week had Rooney (c) Lampard (vc). So he didt get double points for anyone. Okay Rooney had an ankle knock this week that a lot of people knew about it, but if you look back to when he got randomly dropped coz he broke a curfew then that would be really unfair on people that captained him, fully expecting him to play.

I agree, why would you captain someone who is a risk of rotation/infured or rested....the vc choice just rewards the casual player, unless you are really unlucky and your captain gets injured at warmup, eg Micah Richards on Tuesday.

The vc points are a massive difference so may keep the casual player interested. Does anyone else find that mates in leagues give up at Christmas!? Their excuse is that they can't win it or teams are the same or some crass reason.

It's better than last year with the form/value thing which meant you always had a captain. The VC gives a chance of having no captain at all which is better but would rather it was scrapped tbh

Frightening stuff. 9 players at home on the wildcard.

The only thing that will stuff it all up is if they end up in those wretched Scout Picks. 😕
