Leaping like a sixteen stone salmon, Robert Huth is the scourge of 18-yard boxes the length and breadth of the land. Equally terrifying at both ends of the pitch, Huth’s aerial despotism has long ensured that he is as much “on” Stoke’s set-pieces as whoever happens to have the honour of hoofing the ball in his general direction.

The top scoring defender in the Premier League last term, Huth’s six goals were augmented by three assists, eight clean sheets and fourteen bonus points. Amassing 138 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from a starting price of 5.0,  it was no surprise when he was unhesitatingly elected to our team-of-the-season. With the Potters’ defensive parsimony a proverbial constant, and their attacking prosperity ever predicated on set-plays, a price hike to 6.0 this time round seemed unlikely to present a significant impediment to would-be investors.

Three clean sheets in the first four games seemed to forecast a business-as-usual campaign for Tony Pulis’ men, but with new arrivals Matthew Upson and Jonathan Woodgate now competing for centre-back spots a formerly settled defensive line began to betray an uncharacteristic uncertainty. A long clean sheet drought saw Pulis’ protracted search for a solution assuming the character of a rotational merry-go-round, and Huth often found himself out on a limb at full-back or even, at times, on the bench.

The restoration of last season’s centre-back pairing of Ryan Shawcross and Huth has applied a much needed prophylactic to Stoke’s unusually profligate campaign. The re-galvanised Potters have secured two clean sheets in their last six, and a goal and an assist last weekend in the FA cup saw man-of-the-match Huth back to his imperious best in the opposing penalty area.

Three home games in the next four make Stoke’s upcoming run an inviting proposition (SUN ful SWA NOR), and a January sale price of 5.6 seems eminently reasonable for a player boasting a strong record in both attack and defence. With the threat of rotation hanging ominously over Stoke’s budget defensive options, Shawcross represents the only other safe choice in the Potters’ back line, but priced at 5.1 and offering little competition to Huth in terms of attacking threat, a saving of 0.5 may well be a false economy.

With more attempts on goal in the last six games than the rest of the Potters’ defence combined, and the prospects for clean sheets never remote at the Brittania, Huth may offer the strongest value in the Stoke side over the coming weeks.

Sorry for posting this again, but it may be useful ... 🙂

For those Krul owners with Lindegaard -

I think Wayne Hennessey is the perfect temporary replacement … :

    Krul: AVL 175 tot -228 -53 WOL 346 SUN 107 ars -182 NOR 205
    WH.:qpr -143 WBA -64 -207 new -346 ful -260 BLA 18 MUN -428

WBA and Blackburn being the operative game weeks – must-win games for Wolves!

True. Hennessey is a good keeper and makes plenty saves but the save count is only a nice addition to a CS. Fundamentally you need a GK playing in a team who are capable of getting CS to merit his selection imo.

The 2 occasions he scored well without a CS (8 & 9) were both penalty saves. You can't pick a keeper on the basis that he is gonna save further pens.

      good reading between the lines.

I guess RVP owners fears can be allayed by the fact that there is no one else, not even a crap alternative. No chamakh, no gervinho on the flank, Henry can't last more than 45 mins against Blackburn surely.....thinking about it he has to play RVP as there is no alternative.

Unless of course Wenger is a mentalist.

Has anyone got any plans in place in case they have a tie in their mini league?

Our family one has a trophy and everything and it seems that when teams are tied during the season its a lottery who's above who.

hhmm...ok. I was under the impression that mini leagues rankings are based on overall ranking, in other words the guy at the top(if scores are tied) would be the higher overall ranked player.

*Luckily I'm my mini league's administrator...there can only be one winner.

it'd go down to transfers made so woule be extraordinary to end on same points and same transfers.

We have three prizes in our mini league. I guess if that happens we'd have to have vote ....most likely option is that joint first get allocated a percentage each....probably 40 per cent each with the third place getting 20 per cent of the pot.

It's possible. I lost my league in the last gameweek last year by 4 pts overall. Coleman red card for me and Walcott coming on for 10 minutes(and scoring) for him.

And I made 1 less transfer.

OK folks RMT for the weekend

    Mignolet

    Richards, Santon, Taiwo

    Silva, Bale, Valencia, Dempsey

    Aguero (vc), RvP (c), Gerbil

    Schwarzer, McLean, Evans, Caulker

    1) Should I play Evans or McLean over Clint

    2) Should I find a way to get Ba in? am 0.3 short, could lose Dempesy or Evans, or could lose my keepers, get Krul and Bogdan and play Krul every week?

So the Lindegard news makes my GK choice a little simpler. Looking now to run with the current selection of Vorm/Sorensen but there will be nagging doubts until the deadline whether or not Mignolet and/or Krul make for better investment.

My big question is whether or not I get Silva in this week as part of the Wildcard.

Pros are clear – Fixtures and Silva’s scoring record so let me set out why I am hesitant.

With a current midfield of Bale/Valencia/Dempsey/Sessegnon I’m sitting on four quality FPL midfielders. I also expect to partner RVP and Ba up front and Richards or Kompany at the back. Limited funds mean that if I pick Silva, I will have to

    a) Drop one of the other 4 midfielders (but not Sessegnon)
    b) Lose both Ba and Kompany

    a) does not seem a very good option since I am of the view that Bale and Valencia are virtually undroppable while Dempsey’s OOP role means he will be a reliable sources of points. Either way, this choice is a gamble on fixtures at a time when City have hardly been firing on all cylinders (Note to self – I said the same earlier in the season about RVP when he cost £11.7m)
    b) leaves the team too unbalanced and almost forces me to select a 3-5-2 formation. This lack of flexibility is worrying if one or other of the midfielders is injured/loses form because I won’t have much outside midfield to pick up the slack. Even with 3 top forwards, I would have the choice of anything from 5-2-3 to 3-4-3 formations.

So do I get Silva and if so is this a) a gamble on the fixtures that is almost certain to pay-off, or b) worth the lose of Kompany and Ba and flexibility in formation?

If your only route to getting Silva atm is leaving out Kompany and Ba... then i don't think it's worth it...
perhaps you should leave it a week or two... then one of your other mids will go off the boil and it will become a much easier choice...
