Papiss Demba Cisse has a debut to remember for Newcastle, joining Demba Ba on the scoresheet to see off Aston Villa. Juan Mata’s return to form is not quite enough to earn Chelsea victory over United, as a Wayne Rooney brace from the penalty spot caps a remarkable Stamford Bridge comeback for the champions:

Demba Ba
Handed a start alongside Leon Best on his return to domestic action, the former West Ham man wasted little time in returning to goalscoring form against Villa. Ba grabbed the opener on the half hour mark to take his goals tally to 16 for the season- he has now netted in each of his last three home games and with Wolves, Sunderland and Norwich visiting Tyneside in the next five gameweeks, looks set to further boost his returns. Ba has already been drafted in by over 160,000 Fantasy managers since last week, with his price already increasing by 0.3.

Papiss Demba Cisse
With Best subbed off injured inside 15 minutes, the new boy was afforded a role alongside his compatriot in the Newcastle attack. Playing as the furthest forward of the front pair, Cisse produced a lively debut, firing off plenty efforts and capped a memorable first showing by bagging a brilliant winner for Alan Pardew’s side. Cisse offers a cheaper alternative to his team mate for Newcastle attacking options; coming in at 7.0 to Ba’s 7.6, and with those aforementioned fixtures looks a strong differential, given his ownership still stands at less than 1%, though Ba’s spot-kick duties may sway things his way.

Ryan Taylor
The out-of-position Fantasy prospect was afforded another start in midfield and provided an assist for the Magpies opener, but a leg injury forced him off on 32 minutes. Taylor’s 38% Fantasy owners (more than Robin Van Persie) will be sweating on the prognosis, though Alan Pardew was positive post-match, suggesting there is no break or fracture, and reckons Taylor will be ok. The Newcastle boss received some bad news on Leon Best, though, with the forward likely to be ruled out for six weeks with medial ligament damage.

Robbie Keane
The 5.1 priced Irishman continues to shine in his brief loan spell at Villa. Keane grabbed the midlanders’ equaliser yesterday and has now netted 3 goals in three starts since arriving from LA Galaxy in gameweek 21. Although he still has until the end of February before departing these shores, it’s clear his loss will already be a considerable one for Alex McLeish. Put into perspective, Gabby Agbonlahor has scored twice since the end of gameweek 5 and Darren Bent has bagged 4 since the end of gameweek 11.

Juan Mata
A 13 point haul took the Spaniard to 106 points for the season, making him the top-scoring Fantasy player in the Chelsea side. Mata had been desperately off-form as a Fantasy performer of late, having returned just a single goal in his previous nine appearances, but a goal and assist in yesterday’s 3-3 thriller brought him back under the radar. This was his third double-figure display at the Bridge and with Bolton, Stoke and Wigan three of Chelsea’s next four visitors, he’s looking promising once again but, with just 2 assists on the road all season, unless he can improve his away form, Mata –for 9.6 – still seems an unreliable acquisition.

Fernando Torres
Granted, he has yet to find the net since gameweek 6, but yesterday saw the £50m man continue an improved consistency, in terms of Fantasy returns. Torres still seems wildly off-form, though, and almost reluctant to shoot at times, but has now provided assists against Fulham, Sunderland and United in his last three first-team appearances at the Bridge. Daniel Sturridge’s assist was his first attacking return since gameweek 17 and, after a strong first half to the season, his Fantasy owners are beginning to get itchy feet- he has been sold off by more than 100,000 in the past couple of matches.

Wayne Rooney
With no goals and only “those” assists since gameweek 17, Rooney’s dire form had seen many Fantasy managers turn to up-front alternatives. Yesterday, he had his penalty duties to fall back on, bagging a couple from the spot to salvage a draw for the champions. No doubt, his brace will bring him back under the radar and with United’s fixtures from gameweek 28 onwards particularly outstanding, many will be looking to acquire his services once again. His inconsistency is still a huge worry, though. Rooney has scored in only four of his ten appearances at Old Trafford this season and, as far as home bankers go, hasn’t been in the same league as the likes of Robin Van Persie or Sergio Aguero so far.

Danny Welbeck
The 6.7 priced forward grabbed an assist yesterday to maintain his impressive run of recent form. Welbeck has produced attacking returns in four of his last five starts for United and, having started alongside Rooney once again, continues to offer a cut-price route into the champions’ front line. Similar to Rooney, Welbeck has also scored in four of his United home appearances this term, though all have come without the aid of spot-kicks.

Ryan Giggs
He may have started just twice at Old Trafford this term but the Welshman seems to be a preferred away option for Sir Alex Ferguson. Giggs has played the full 90 minutes in each of United’s last four games on the road and yesterday’s assist for Javier Hernandez’s last equaliser continued his influential displays; he has now returned 1 goal, 4 assists and 5 bonus points in those afore-mentioned fixtures.

Had 1 FT was 0.1 short of Ba so got Cisse instead. I think it could be a big differential if he goes by how he plays for Senegal which is just ahead of Ba.

    Bodan
    Richards, Kelly, Cahill
    Valencia, Dempsey, Silva, Bale (C)
    Cisse, RVP, Aguero

    Subs: Mignolet, Sessegnon, Evans, Santon.

What do people think of my team for next GW? I also realise Cahill might not pay off but if he doesn't then Evans is on the bench.

    Current Team is:

    Krul, Mignolet
Taiwo, Cahill, Jose Enrique, Evans J, Danny Simpson,
McClean, Sess, Bale, Dempsey, Ben Arfa,
    Sturridge, Aguero, RVP

I want to bring in Ba for Sturridge this week, but as have 3 Newcastle players will need to sub one out, guessing BArfa for Siggurdson? Is it worth activating my WC and maybe mixing my defense up a bit as well. Was thinking bringing a city defender in? Thanks

I'm utterly baffled by the philosophy of the addition of a better player in a team, like Papa Cisse 'stealing' or hampering the points potential of another player, Ba in this case if Ba's playing position remains the same and if he is still on the same dead ball's as he was on earlier. Surely the notion of the team scoring the same number of goals as prior to the purchase of a player is baseless otherwise why has the team bought said player? Also, wouldn't have a better partner as a player lead to more returns, a simple example being RVP's goal vs Man United, in which AOC provided the assist, if AOC hadn't provided the assist RVP couldn't have scored could he? and the reverse was shown vs Blackburn when AOC converted RVP's assist, so RVP benefited from having a better player around didn't he? Would someone please care to explain the psychology of this philosophy? Thanks.

Well not if the 'replacing' player, like Papa Cisse causes the other forward, Ba in this case, to play further back.
Just look at Rooney and Welbeck/ Hernandez. He's forced to play behind one of those two, and thus his returns have been diminished.

Now of course you have a point, Ba has a lot more potential for assists now, I expect (or hope!) the pros and cons will even out in this case

Thought you read my final comment and ignored it. It's all good though. I hope for your sake Dzeko does the business for you in the coming weeks. I actually had him in instead of Aguero for the value option and in FF terms he is a good option. I just don't like him much in real word terms.

No worries....lots of confusion all ironed out I hope.

and cheers, hope he does well too. His ability and scoring don't concern me. Rotation does though. That is Dzeko's true Achilles heel.

Chris Glover did an excellent article a while back on potential high performers in the last half of the season. He predicts a fall in form for Ageuro over the second half and a rise in form from Dzeko.

As you say it's groundless. People are silly. If cisse scores more ba will benefit fro
Assists. Plus a goal flurry will weaken the opposition more which helps ba. Finally if cisse helps new to victory then that'll favour ba bps wise.

Has anyone on here seen any of the sh#t people say videos? They are usually about sports and refer to the unique language, abbreviations and generally ridiculous things people say.

    A good example is:
    http://youtu.be/1KTEgLKhjIw

What would you include in a fantasy football one? I think the top two contenders are:

    #### is due a goal.
I have a feeling #### is about to explode.

    Any more classics out there?

I guess the best way to break it down is "pick the highest scoring eleven players each week".
There is a small smidgeon of validity to the coverage argument though, because the scores of teammates are loosely linked to how the team does as a whole. You're taking a bigger gamble the more teammates you stack up.

Sunderland and City are form sides right now, but I still wouldn't want a team predominantly composed of both.

You were fecking unlucky on that, particularly as Huth was seen as goal threat and Kompany ironically was seen as the safe option to start relative to Kompany.

Obviously want to keep Kompany IMO, Huth is a question mark. I had faith Pulis would restore the great home CS form they used to have, but it's been so flaky recently.

forgive me if i seem to be asking a lot of rubbishy questions today which seem to be about anything and everything but it's mainly because i'll be in and out of the country the next few weeks and i KNOW i won't get chance to really think about things properly.

i've already played my WC but i'm still looking to make a handful of transfers so is it better to do them in one week, have a low scoring week and then reap the benefits sooner rather than later or do i make the changes slowly over a period knowing that every week could be a red arrow?

I feel that it's better to write off one week, especially if you feel that week can be potentially high scoring for your players that you are transferring for a hit, it will also probably involve you losing less H2H matches and you'll get all the players you want, otherwise even the best laid plans will most definitely be scuppered, thanks to injuries, form etc.

slowly over a period of time imo. injuries to other players may pop up & you'll need to transfer them out which will cost extra. unless the players you want out are not playing/injured that your time with the transfers, they may chip in with a few unexpected points while still in your team

It depends whose playing in Central midfield. Giggs particularly likes to play off Young and go on his runs down the left which I find frustrating.

I thought Young played decent yesterday.

The guy is so right footed though, it is painful to watch him play on the left. His only option is cutting in on his right and trying to curl shots and crosses in. Everyone remembers his goals against Arsenal at the start of the season. He actually had a decent shot like that yesterday which Cech could only palm away, had Rooney gambled he may have even got a goal from the rebound. I'd like to see him do that more often though.

It was a decent return for him and he gives us some extra cutting edge in attack but I fully expect Nani's return to dry up Young's points though i.e. Young will probably be dropped/rotated.

I've taken the gamble of retaining 2 MUN players now, having faith in their clutch performances in the second half of the season. Particularly CS. I keep faith in Valencia, I don't see why tons of people suddenly think someone that has been carrying United's attack recently is not worth keeping.

BTW no faith in King? He's 4.8.

Yeah probably sensible to go for the guaranteed starter.

Well on Valencia... I thought he was pretty ordinary against Chelsea, but they played a big team and everyone has off days. When Silva or Bale gets a 2 against a big gun, we don't all jump on his back. And Valencia has performed between the two recently.

    Silva-Bale-Sess-Valencia-Demps(C)
    Ba-RVP(VC)

    Bench:Krul-Welbeck-Santon-Shotton

Anyone know when Liverpool have their double gameweek and who else will also have a double GW? I still have my wildcard and thinking of keeping it until that gameweek. Do you think my team is good enough to wait?

    Friedel Vorm

    Kompany Richards Welker Turner Simpson

    Eagles Sessegnon Silva Sigurdsson Nani

    Zamora Van Persie Adebayor

Already made my transfers for this week. Will be swapping Adebayor for Ba after next week. Will possibly be offloading Nani the week after if no improvement is shown.

no BP's for Sess wasn't that much of a surprise, 2 shots off target, plus a 1-0 seems to favour defenders for BP's

          McClean 3
          Turner 2
          Mignolet 1

          assister none

Does seem to me like assists don't carry a huge amount of weight in the PPI. Seems to be more about the all-round performance, be it key passes, clearances, tackles, interceptions and blocks etc. I might watch the highlights and see how Sess did, maybe he made the assist but didn't do much else, or shot off target too much.

Depends how tight the match is and how close the PPI scores are I guess.

What I'm saying is that an assist by itself is not enough, you need an all round performance which the assist was part of.

By way of example I've just checked Sess' stats for this match in the members area, and while I can't divulge the exact numbers, it seems like the assist was basically all he did that match.
